Bipedal-Walking-Dynamics Model on Granular Terrains

Bipeds have demonstrated high agility and mobility in unstructured environments such as sand. The yielding of such granular media brings significant sinkage and slip of the bipedal feet, leading to uncertainty and instability of walking locomotion. We present a new dynamics-modeling approach to capture and predict bipedal-walking locomotion on granular media. A dynamic foot-terrain interaction model is integrated to compute the ground reaction force (GRF). The proposed granular dynamic model has three additional degree-of-freedom (DoF) to estimate foot sinkage and slip that are critical to capturing robot-walking kinematics and kinetics such as cost of transport (CoT). Using the new model, we analyze bipedal kinetics, CoT, and foot-terrain rolling and intrusion affects. Experiments are conducted using a biped robotic walker on sand to validate the proposed dynamic model with robot-gait profiles, media-intrusion prediction, and GRF estimations. This new dynamics model can further serve as an enabling tool for locomotion control and optimization of bipedal robots to efficiently walk on granular terrains.

FEDBUD: Joint Incentive and Privacy Optimization for Resource-Constrained Federated Learning

Federated learning has become a popular paradigm for privacy protection and edge-based machine learning. However, defending against differential attacks and devising incentive strategies remain significant bottlenecks in this field. Despite recent works on privacy-aware incentive mechanism design for federated learning, few of them consider both data volume and noise level. In this paper, we propose a novel federated learning system called FEDBUD, which combines privacy and economic concerns together by considering the joint influence of data volume and noise level on incentive strategy determination. In this system, the cloud server controls monetary payments to edge nodes, while edge nodes control data volume and noise level that potentially impact the model performance of the cloud server. To determine the mutually optimal strategies for both sides, we model FEDBUD as a two-stage Stackelberg Game and derive the Nash Equilibrium using the mean-field estimator and virtual queue. Experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate the outstanding performance of FEDBUD.

Cooperative Control of Parallel Actuators for Linear Robust Output Regulation of Uncertain Linear Minimum-phase Plants

This paper investigates the robust output regulation problem for an uncertain linear minimum-phase plant with cooperative parallel operation of multiple actuators. Building on the internal model approach, we first propose a dynamic output feedback control law to solve the robust output regulation problem with a single actuator. Then, we construct a distributed dynamic output feedback control law that is nearly independent of the number of actuators and incorporates coupling terms to address the linear robust output regulation problem with cooperative parallel operation of multiple actuators over undirected communication networks. We reveal the connection in the design of parameters between the dynamic output feedback control law under single actuator operation and the distributed dynamic output feedback control law under cooperative parallel operation with multiple actuators. Moreover, we remove the existing assumption that the actuator dynamics must be Hurwitz stable, thereby enabling the incorporation of unstable actuators in our framework. Finally, two numerical examples are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control laws.

PoiCGAN: A Targeted Poisoning Based on Feature-Label Joint Perturbation in Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL), as a popular distributed learning paradigm, has shown outstanding performance in improving computational efficiency and protecting data privacy, and is widely applied in industrial image classification. However, due to its distributed nature, FL is vulnerable to threats from malicious clients, with poisoning attacks being a common threat. A major limitation of existing poisoning attack methods is their difficulty in bypassing model performance tests and defense mechanisms based on model anomaly detection. This often results in the detection and removal of poisoned models, which undermines their practical utility. To ensure both the performance of industrial image classification and attacks, we propose a targeted poisoning attack, PoiCGAN, based on feature-label collaborative perturbation. Our method modifies the inputs of the discriminator and generator in the Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (CGAN) to influence the training process, generating an ideal poison generator. This generator not only produces specific poisoned samples but also automatically performs label flipping. Experiments across various datasets show that our method achieves an attack success rate 83.97% higher than baseline methods, with a less than 8.87% reduction in the main task's accuracy. Moreover, the poisoned samples and malicious models exhibit high stealthiness.

Leader-following Consensus over Jointly Connected Switching Networks is Achievable for Exponentially Unstable Linear Systems

The leader-following consensus problem for general linear multi-agent systems over jointly connected switching networks has been a challenging problem and the solvability of the problem has been limited to the class of linear multi-agent systems whose system matrix is marginally stable. This condition is restrictive since it even excludes the most commonly used double-integrator system. This paper presents a breakthrough by demonstrating that leader-following exponential consensus is achievable for general linear multi-agent systems over jointly connected switching networks, even when the system matrix is exponentially unstable. The degree of instability can be explicitly characterized by two key quantities that arise from the jointly connected condition on a switching graph. By exploiting duality, we further show that the output-based distributed observer design problem for a general leader system is solvable over jointly connected switching networks, even when the system matrix is exponentially unstable. This is also in sharp contrast to the existing distributed observers, which rely on the assumption that the leader system is marginally stable.

ShaRP: SHAllow-LayeR Pruning for Efficient Video Large Language Models

Video Large Language Models (VLLMs) incur substantial prefilling cost due to the large number of visual tokens. While attention-based token pruning offers a promising acceleration strategy, applying it at shallow decoder layers often causes severe performance degradation under high compression ratios, limiting its practical benefits. In this work, we uncover an overlooked failure mode in shallow-layer attention pruning: attention scores in early decoder layers can become unreliable indicators of token utility, resulting in unstable token selection under aggressive compression. We show that this effect arises from the joint influence of insufficient token interaction, content-agnostic positional bias, and redundancy among high-attention tokens, which together distort attention-based importance estimation before informative representations fully emerge. Motivated by this insight, we propose ShaRP, a unified pruning framework that restores reliable attention-based token selection by jointly improving local information aggregation, calibrating positional bias, and reducing redundancy. Extensive evaluations show that ShaRP preserves about 97.2% of the original performance while reducing TFLOPs by 86% and achieving a 5.1x speedup in the prefilling stage, providing a scalable solution for efficient training-free VLLM inference.

On the Energy Cost of Post-Quantum Key Establishment in Wireless Low-Power Personal Area Networks

Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) creates payloads that strain the timing and energy budgets of Personal Area Networks. In post-quantum key exchange (PQKE), this causes severe fragmentation, prolonged radio activity, and high transmission overhead on low-power devices. Prior work optimizes cryptographic computation but largely ignores communication cost. This paper separates computation and communication costs using Bluetooth Low Energy as a representative platform and validates them on real hardware. Results show communication often dominates PQKE energy, exceeding cryptographic cost. Efficient quantum-resilient pairing therefore requires coordinated protocol configuration and lower-layer optimization. This work provides developers a practical way to reason about PQC energy trade-offs and informs the evolution of PAN standards toward quantum-safe operation.

Probing Ultralight Axion-like Dark Matter: A Pulsar Timing Arrays-Pulsar Polarization Arrays Synergy

Ultralight axionlike dark matter (ALDM) is a leading candidate in the dark matter realm, characterized by its prominent wave properties on astronomical scales. Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) and Pulsar polarization arrays (PPAs) aim to detect this dark matter through timing and polarization measurements, respectively, of pulsars. The PTA relies on gravitational effects, while the PPA detects nongravitational effects. These two methods complement each other, synergistically enhancing the pulsar array's capability to identify the ALDM signals in the data. In this article, we provide a foundational development of this synergy. We begin by revisiting previously derived two-point correlation functions for both PTA and PPA, and extend the analysis to include the leading-order correlation between timing and polarization signals, encoded as a three-point function. We then explore the constructions of likelihood functions for PTA and combined PTA-PPA analyses within a Bayesian framework, aimed at detecting the characteristic correlations of ALDM signals. We emphasize the non-Gaussianity of the ALDM timing signals, which arises from their nonlinear dependence on the field, in contrast to the Gaussian nature of its polarization signals. To address the complexities introduced, we approach this investigation in two ways: one involves a Gaussian approximation with proper justifications, while the other derives the formalism from the generic Gaussian characteristics of the ALDM field. Particularly, for the combined PTA-PPA case, a clear connection between the three-point correlation function and the likelihood is established. We anticipate that these efforts will lead to further developments in PTA and PTA-PPA analysis methods, better accounting for the influence of non-Gaussianity.

No Labels, No Look-Ahead: Unsupervised Online Video Stabilization with Classical Priors

We propose a new unsupervised framework for online video stabilization. Unlike methods based on deep learning that require paired stable and unstable datasets, our approach instantiates the classical stabilization pipeline with three stages and incorporates a multithreaded buffering mechanism. This design addresses three longstanding challenges in end-to-end learning: limited data, poor controllability, and inefficiency on hardware with constrained resources. Existing benchmarks focus mainly on handheld videos with a forward view in visible light, which restricts the applicability of stabilization to domains such as UAV nighttime remote sensing. To fill this gap, we introduce a new multimodal UAV aerial video dataset (UAV-Test). Experiments show that our method consistently outperforms state-of-the-art online stabilizers in both quantitative metrics and visual quality, while achieving performance comparable to offline methods.

Passive Synchronization of Nonlocal Franson Interferometry for Fiber-Based Quantum Networks Using Co-propagating Classical Clock Signals

We demonstrate a robust, high-visibility nonlocal Franson interferometry for fiber-based quantum networks by co-propagating a classical Radio-over-Fiber clock signal with energy-time entangled photon pairs in the same fiber. Utilizing cross-band allocation (O-band for classical, L-band for quantum signals), the spontaneous Raman scattering noise photons are effectively suppressed. At the same time, their environmental delay fluctuations remain highly correlated for common-mode noise cancellation, achieving a passive synchronization with picoseconds precision. Over 50 km of single-mode fiber, this co-propagation enables nonlocal quantum interference with a visibility of (88.35\pm3.62)%, without relying on external dedicated timing infrastructure. This work provides a practical, scalable synchronization solution for metropolitan-scale entanglement-based quantum networks.

Vision-Based Reasoning with Topology-Encoded Graphs for Anatomical Path Disambiguation in Robot-Assisted Endovascular Navigation

Robotic-assisted percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is constrained by the inherent limitations of 2D Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA). Unlike physicians, who can directly manipulate guidewires and integrate tactile feedback with their prior anatomical knowledge, teleoperated robotic systems must rely solely on 2D projections. This mode of operation, simultaneously lacking spatial context and tactile sensation, may give rise to projection-induced ambiguities at vascular bifurcations. To address this challenge, we propose a two-stage framework (SCAR-UNet-GAT) for real-time robotic path planning. In the first stage, SCAR-UNet, a spatial-coordinate-attention-regularized U-Net, is employed for accurate coronary vessel segmentation. The integration of multi-level attention mechanisms enhances the delineation of thin, tortuous vessels and improves robustness against imaging noise. From the resulting binary masks, vessel centerlines and bifurcation points are extracted, and geometric descriptors (e.g., branch diameter, intersection angles) are fused with local DSA patches to construct node features. In the second stage, a Graph Attention Network (GAT) reasons over the vessel graph to identify anatomically consistent and clinically feasible trajectories, effectively distinguishing true bifurcations from projection-induced false crossings. On a clinical DSA dataset, SCAR-UNet achieved a Dice coefficient of 93.1%. For path disambiguation, the proposed GAT-based method attained a success rate of 95.0% and a target-arrival success rate of 90.0%, substantially outperforming conventional shortest-path planning (60.0% and 55.0%) and heuristic-based planning (75.0% and 70.0%). Validation on a robotic platform further confirmed the practical feasibility and robustness of the proposed framework.

Co-Propagation of Quantum Time Synchronization and Optical Frequency Transfer over a 122 km Hollow-Core Fiber

The co-propagation of quantum and classical signals through shared optical fibers is crucial for scalable quantum networks. However, this coexistence is fundamentally limited by spontaneous Raman scattering (SpRS) from the bright classical light, which generates overwhelming noise that disrupts the single-photon-level quantum signals. Here, we overcome this long-standing challenge by leveraging the inherently ultralow nonlinearity of hollow-core fiber (HCF) to suppress SpRS noise. By operating both the quantum time synchronization (QTS) and classical optical frequency transfer (OFT) signals within the telecom C-band, separated by only ~10 nm, we successfully demonstrate their simultaneous transmission over a 122-km HCF link. With a classical OFT power of 1 mW, the QTS performance shows negligible degradation, maintaining sub-picosecond time stability at 2000 s, while the OFT achieves a fractional frequency instability of 10^-20. Near-sub-picosecond QTS stability is preserved even when the classical power is increased to 3 mW. Furthermore, simulations based on our experimental data indicate that with next-generation low-loss HCF, the platform can tolerate classical powers beyond 10 mW and extend the QTS range to over 500 km. By realizing a unified quantum-classical time-frequency distribution framework, this work establishes HCF as a highly capable and practical platform for future scalable quantum networks.

EDU-MATRIX: A Society-Centric Generative Cognitive Digital Twin Architecture for Secondary Education

Existing multi-agent simulations often suffer from the "Agent-Centric Paradox": rules are hard-coded into individual agents, making complex social dynamics rigid and difficult to align with educational values. This paper presents EDU-MATRIX, a society-centric generative cognitive digital twin architecture that shifts the paradigm from simulating "people" to simulating a "social space with a gravitational field." We introduce three architectural contributions: (1) An Environment Context Injection Engine (ECIE), which acts as a "social microkernel," dynamically injecting institutional rules (Gravity) into agents based on their spatial-temporal coordinates; (2) A Modular Logic Evolution Protocol (MLEP), where knowledge exists as "fluid" capsules that agents synthesize to generate new paradigms, ensuring high dialogue consistency (94.1%); and (3) Endogenous Alignment via Role-Topology, where safety constraints emerge from the agent's position in the social graph rather than external filters. Deployed as a digital twin of a secondary school with 2,400 agents, the system demonstrates how "social gravity" (rules) and "cognitive fluids" (knowledge) interact to produce emergent, value-aligned behaviors (Social Clustering Coefficient: 0.72).

Demonstration of High-Gain Harmonic Lasing in a Terahertz Free-Electron Laser

Compact Free-Electron Lasers (FELs) offering broad, continuous spectral tunability are traditionally constrained by fixed-parameter magnetic structures and the necessity for high-energy electron beams. High-gain Harmonic Lasing (HL) has long been proposed as a solution to overcome these limitations; however, a robust experimental verification of this principle has remained absent. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of high-gain HL. By employing a frequency-tunable electron beam density modulation to dominate the fundamental instability, we achieved sustained FEL amplification at the 3rd and 5th harmonics of the wiggler. The HL mode generated output power comparable to conventional fundamental operation with enhanced stability and narrower spectral bandwidth. Notably, we demonstrate that HL extends the spectral coverage by a factor of two under fixed facility constraints, achieving pulse energies up to 540 μJ. These results establish high-gain HL as a versatile mechanism for advancing compact, wavelength-flexible FEL facilities.

On the rheoscopic measurement of turbulent decay in wall-bounded flows

Quench experiments where the flow passes from a fully turbulent state to a laminar state by an abrupt decrease in the flow Reynolds number ($Re$) have been extensively studied in the literature to quantify the turbulent-laminar transition process in wall-bounded flows. Measurements have been classically made using rheoscopic fluid visualisations, which make turbulent coherent structures easily identifiable, allowing for quantification of the evolution of a turbulent fraction -- the percentage of a given observation window where turbulence is deemed active by the presence of coherent structures, such as streamwise vortices called rolls, and modulations of the streamwise velocity fluctuations called streaks. Decay characteristic times of these structures have therefore been extensively measured. However, owing to the nature of visualization based techniques, only a single decay time is typically extracted, whereas measurements of the velocity field can reveal distinct decay times associated with different velocity or kinetic energy components. As a result, the physical meaning of the decay time inferred from visualization alone is not straightforward. The goal of the present paper is to perform such a comparison quantitatively, using particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements and rheoscopic fluid visualisations in the same setup: a Couette-Poiseuille experiment. We observe via PIV different characteristic times of decay for streamwise (streaks) and spanwise (rolls) velocity fluctuations. We show that the characteristic time of decay of the turbulent fraction observed by visualisation is close to the decay of the streaks.

Revisiting Model Interpolation for Efficient Reasoning

Model merging, typically on Instruct and Thinking models, has shown remarkable performance for efficient reasoning. In this paper, we systematically revisit the simplest merging method that interpolates two weights directly. Particularly, we observe that model interpolation follows a three-stage evolutionary paradigm with distinct behaviors on the reasoning trajectory. These dynamics provide a principled guide for navigating the performance-cost trade-off. Empirical results demonstrate that a strategically interpolated model surprisingly surpasses sophisticated model merging baselines on both efficiency and effectiveness. We further validate our findings with extensive ablation studies on model layers, modules, and decoding strategies. Ultimately, this work demystifies model interpolation and offers a practical framework for crafting models with precisely targeted reasoning capabilities. A Versatile Three Dimensional Traction Force Microscopy Framework for Uncovering the Mechanics of Bio-Adhesion

This study presents a novel, versatile traction force microscopy framework for quantifying three-dimensional (3D) interfacial forces during bio-adhesion by integrating in situ stereo digital image correlation with finite element (FE) simulation. The method enables accurate measurement of microscale displacements and force distributions at the interfaces in both dry and wet environments, addressing limitations of conventional microscopy techniques related to limited measurement scales, restricted fields of view, and surface disturbance from contact or fluorescence. An analytical model was developed to guide the design of a deformable substrate, supporting selection of substrate material and thickness of the substrate. System accuracy was examined through steel ball compression experiments, which were validated against FE simulations. The framework was applied to marine mussel plaque adhesion under 15 directional tension to characterize interfacial traction force distributions. Sensitivity analyses examined the effects of Poisson's ratio, Young's modulus, and constitutive models on the results. This approach offers a versatile platform for investigating interfacial mechanics in adhesives, with broad relevance to bioengineering applications.

Pulsar Polarization Array Limits on Ultralight Axion-like Dark Matter

We conduct the first-ever Pulsar Polarization Array (PPA) analysis to detect the ultralight Axion-Like Dark Matter (ALDM) using the polarization data of 22 millisecond pulsars from the third data release of Parkes Pulsar Timing Array. As one of the major dark matter candidates, the ultralight ALDM exhibits a pronounced wave nature on astronomical scales and offers a promising solution to small-scale structure issues within local galaxies. While the linearly polarized pulsar light travels through the ALDM galactic halo, its position angle (PA) can be subject to an oscillation induced by the ALDM Chern-Simons coupling with electromagnetic field. The PPA is thus especially suited for detecting the ultralight ALDM by correlating polarization data across the arrayed pulsars. To accomplish this task, we develop an advanced Bayesian analysis framework that allows us to construct pulsar PA residual time series, model noise contributions properly and search for pulsar cross-correlations. We find that for an ALDM density of $ρ_0=0.4\,\textrm{GeV}/\textrm{cm}^3$, the Parkes PPA offers the best global limits on the ALDM Chern-Simons coupling, namely $\lesssim 10^{-13.5}-10^{-12.2}~{\rm GeV}^{-1}$, for the mass range of $10^{-22} - 10^{-21}~{\rm eV}$. The crucial role of pulsar cross-correlation in recognizing the nature of the derived limits is also highlighted.
