An Empirical Study on Information Extraction using Large Language Models

Human-like large language models (LLMs), especially the most powerful and popular ones in OpenAI's GPT family, have proven to be very helpful for many natural language processing (NLP) related tasks. Therefore, various attempts have been made to apply LLMs to information extraction (IE), which is a fundamental NLP task that involves extracting information from unstructured plain text. To demonstrate the latest representative progress in LLMs' information extraction ability, we assess the information extraction ability of GPT-4 (the latest version of GPT at the time of writing this paper) from four perspectives: Performance, Evaluation Criteria, Robustness, and Error Types. Our results suggest a visible performance gap between GPT-4 and state-of-the-art (SOTA) IE methods. To alleviate this problem, considering the LLMs' human-like characteristics, we propose and analyze the effects of a series of simple prompt-based methods, which can be generalized to other LLMs and NLP tasks. Rich experiments show our methods' effectiveness and some of their remaining issues in improving GPT-4's information extraction ability.

AI-based Automatic Segmentation of Prostate on Multi-modality Images: A Review

Prostate cancer represents a major threat to health. Early detection is vital in reducing the mortality rate among prostate cancer patients. One approach involves using multi-modality (CT, MRI, US, etc.) computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for the prostate region. However, prostate segmentation is challenging due to imperfections in the images and the prostate's complex tissue structure. The advent of precision medicine and a significant increase in clinical capacity have spurred the need for various data-driven tasks in the field of medical imaging. Recently, numerous machine learning and data mining tools have been integrated into various medical areas, including image segmentation. This article proposes a new classification method that differentiates supervision types, either in number or kind, during the training phase. Subsequently, we conducted a survey on artificial intelligence (AI)-based automatic prostate segmentation methods, examining the advantages and limitations of each. Additionally, we introduce variants of evaluation metrics for the verification and performance assessment of the segmentation method and summarize the current challenges. Finally, future research directions and development trends are discussed, reflecting the outcomes of our literature survey, suggesting high-precision detection and treatment of prostate cancer as a promising avenue.

Infinite-LLM: Efficient LLM Service for Long Context with DistAttention and Distributed KVCache

Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate substantial potential across a diverse array of domains via request serving. However, as trends continue to push for expanding context sizes, the autoregressive nature of LLMs results in highly dynamic behavior of the attention layers, showcasing significant differences in computational characteristics and memory requirements from the non-attention layers. This presents substantial challenges for resource management and performance optimization in service systems. Existing static model parallelism and resource allocation strategies fall short when dealing with this dynamicity. To address the issue, we propose Infinite-LLM, a novel LLM serving system designed to effectively handle dynamic context lengths. Infinite-LLM disaggregates attention layers from an LLM's inference process, facilitating flexible and independent resource scheduling that optimizes computational performance and enhances memory utilization jointly. By leveraging a pooled GPU memory strategy across a cluster, Infinite-LLM not only significantly boosts system throughput but also supports extensive context lengths. Evaluated on a dataset with context lengths ranging from a few to 2000K tokens across a cluster with 32 A100 GPUs, Infinite-LLM demonstrates throughput improvement of 1.35-3.4x compared to state-of-the-art methods, enabling efficient and elastic LLM deployment.

RoMe: Towards Large Scale Road Surface Reconstruction via Mesh Representation

In autonomous driving applications, accurate and efficient road surface reconstruction is paramount. This paper introduces RoMe, a novel framework designed for the robust reconstruction of large-scale road surfaces. Leveraging a unique mesh representation, RoMe ensures that the reconstructed road surfaces are accurate and seamlessly aligned with semantics. To address challenges in computational efficiency, we propose a waypoint sampling strategy, enabling RoMe to reconstruct vast environments by focusing on sub-areas and subsequently merging them. Furthermore, we incorporate an extrinsic optimization module to enhance the robustness against inaccuracies in extrinsic calibration. Our extensive evaluations of both public datasets and wild data underscore RoMe's superiority in terms of speed, accuracy, and robustness. For instance, it costs only 2 GPU hours to recover a road surface of 600*600 square meters from thousands of images. Notably, RoMe's capability extends beyond mere reconstruction, offering significant value for autolabeling tasks in autonomous driving applications. All related data and code are available at https://github.com/DRosemei/RoMe.

Defect Image Sample Generation With Diffusion Prior for Steel Surface Defect Recognition

The task of steel surface defect recognition is an industrial problem with great industry values. The data insufficiency is the major challenge in training a robust defect recognition network. Existing methods have investigated to enlarge the dataset by generating samples with generative models. However, their generation quality is still limited by the insufficiency of defect image samples. To this end, we propose Stable Surface Defect Generation (StableSDG), which transfers the vast generation distribution embedded in Stable Diffusion model for steel surface defect image generation. To tackle with the distinctive distribution gap between steel surface images and generated images of the diffusion model, we propose two processes. First, we align the distribution by adapting parameters of the diffusion model, adopted both in the token embedding space and network parameter space. Besides, in the generation process, we propose image-oriented generation rather than from pure Gaussian noises. We conduct extensive experiments on steel surface defect dataset, demonstrating state-of-the-art performance on generating high-quality samples and training recognition models, and both designed processes are significant for the performance.

VulMCI : Code Splicing-based Pixel-row Oversampling for More Continuous Vulnerability Image Generation

In recent years, the rapid development of deep learning technology has brought new prospects to the field of vulnerability detection. Many vulnerability detection methods involve converting source code into images for detection, yet they often overlook the quality of the generated images. Due to the fact that vulnerability images lack clear and continuous contours, unlike images used in object detection, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) tend to lose semantic information during the convolution and pooling processes. Therefore, this paper proposes a pixel row oversampling method based on code line concatenation to generate more continuous code features, addressing the issue of discontinuity in code image coloration.Building upon these contributions, we propose the vulnerability detection system VulMCI and conduct tests on the SARD and NVD datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that VulMCI outperforms seven state-of-the-art vulnerability detectors (namely Checkmarx, FlawFinder, RATS, VulDeePecker, SySeVR, VulCNN, and Devign). Compared to other image-based methods, VulMCI shows improvements in various metrics, including a 2.877\% increase in True Positive Rate (TPR), a 5.446\% increase in True Negative Rate (TNR), and a 5.91\% increase in Accuracy (ACC). On the NVD real-world dataset, VulMCI achieves an average accuracy of 5.162\%, confirming its value in practical vulnerability detection applications.

Bile dynamics within the biliary tract and microfluidic-based bile component detection: A review

Bilestones are solid masses found in the gallbladder or biliary tract, which block the normal bile flow and eventually result in severe life-threatening complications. Studies have shown that bilestone formation may be related to bile flow dynamics and the concentration level of bile components. The bile flow dynamics in the biliary tract play a critical role in disclosing the mechanism of bile stasis and transportation. The concentration of bile composition is closely associated with processes such as nucleation and crystallization. Recently, microfluidic-based biosensors have been favored for multiple advantages over traditional bench-top detection assays for their less sample consumption, portability, low cost, and high sensitivity for real-time detection. Here, we reviewed the developments in bile dynamics study and microfluidics-based bile component detection methods. These studies may provide valuable insights into the bilestone formation mechanisms and better treatment, alongside our opinions on the future development of in vitro lithotriptic drug screening of bilestones and bile characterization tests.

Pupil-driven quantitative differential phase contrast imaging

In this research, we reveal the inborn but hitherto ignored properties of quantitative differential phase contrast (qDPC) imaging: the phase transfer function being an edge detection filter. Inspired by this, we highlighted the duality of qDPC between optics and pattern recognition, and propose a simple and effective qDPC reconstruction algorithm, termed Pupil-Driven qDPC (pd-qDPC), to facilitate the phase reconstruction quality for the family of qDPC-based phase reconstruction algorithms. We formed a new cost function in which modified L0-norm was used to represent the pupil-driven edge sparsity, and the qDPC convolution operator is duplicated in the data fidelity term to achieve automatic background removal. Further, we developed the iterative reweighted soft-threshold algorithms based on split Bregman method to solve this modified L0-norm problem. We tested pd-qDPC on both simulated and experimental data and compare against state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods including L2-norm, total variation regularization (TV-qDPC), isotropic-qDPC, and Retinex qDPC algorithms. Results show that our proposed model is superior in terms of phase reconstruction quality and implementation efficiency, in which it significantly increases the experimental robustness while maintaining the data fidelity. In general, the pd-qDPC enables the high-quality qDPC reconstruction without any modification of the optical system. It simplifies the system complexity and benefits the qDPC community and beyond including but not limited to cell segmentation and PTF learning based on the edge filtering property.

Document-level Relation Extraction with Relation Correlations

Document-level relation extraction faces two overlooked challenges: long-tail problem and multi-label problem. Previous work focuses mainly on obtaining better contextual representations for entity pairs, hardly address the above challenges. In this paper, we analyze the co-occurrence correlation of relations, and introduce it into DocRE task for the first time. We argue that the correlations can not only transfer knowledge between data-rich relations and data-scarce ones to assist in the training of tailed relations, but also reflect semantic distance guiding the classifier to identify semantically close relations for multi-label entity pairs. Specifically, we use relation embedding as a medium, and propose two co-occurrence prediction sub-tasks from both coarse- and fine-grained perspectives to capture relation correlations. Finally, the learned correlation-aware embeddings are used to guide the extraction of relational facts. Substantial experiments on two popular DocRE datasets are conducted, and our method achieves superior results compared to baselines. Insightful analysis also demonstrates the potential of relation correlations to address the above challenges.

BEV-Locator: An End-to-end Visual Semantic Localization Network Using Multi-View Images

Accurate localization ability is fundamental in autonomous driving. Traditional visual localization frameworks approach the semantic map-matching problem with geometric models, which rely on complex parameter tuning and thus hinder large-scale deployment. In this paper, we propose BEV-Locator: an end-to-end visual semantic localization neural network using multi-view camera images. Specifically, a visual BEV (Birds-Eye-View) encoder extracts and flattens the multi-view images into BEV space. While the semantic map features are structurally embedded as map queries sequence. Then a cross-model transformer associates the BEV features and semantic map queries. The localization information of ego-car is recursively queried out by cross-attention modules. Finally, the ego pose can be inferred by decoding the transformer outputs. We evaluate the proposed method in large-scale nuScenes and Qcraft datasets. The experimental results show that the BEV-locator is capable to estimate the vehicle poses under versatile scenarios, which effectively associates the cross-model information from multi-view images and global semantic maps. The experiments report satisfactory accuracy with mean absolute errors of 0.052m, 0.135m and 0.251$^\circ$ in lateral, longitudinal translation and heading angle degree.

Ghost translation

Artificial intelligence has recently been widely used in computational imaging. The deep neural network (DNN) improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the retrieved images, whose quality is otherwise corrupted due to the low sampling ratio or noisy environments. This work proposes a new computational imaging scheme based on the sequence transduction mechanism with the transformer network. The simulation database assists the network in achieving signal translation ability. The experimental single-pixel detector's signal will be `translated' into a 2D image in an end-to-end manner. High-quality images with no background noise can be retrieved at a sampling ratio as low as 2%. The illumination patterns can be either well-designed speckle patterns for sub-Nyquist imaging or random speckle patterns. Moreover, our method is robust to noise interference. This translation mechanism opens a new direction for DNN-assisted ghost imaging and can be used in various computational imaging scenarios.

Recurrence-free Survival Prediction under the Guidance of Automatic Gross Tumor Volume Segmentation for Head and Neck Cancers

For Head and Neck Cancers (HNC) patient management, automatic gross tumor volume (GTV) segmentation and accurate pre-treatment cancer recurrence prediction are of great importance to assist physicians in designing personalized management plans, which have the potential to improve the treatment outcome and quality of life for HNC patients. In this paper, we developed an automated primary tumor (GTVp) and lymph nodes (GTVn) segmentation method based on combined pre-treatment positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scans of HNC patients. We extracted radiomics features from the segmented tumor volume and constructed a multi-modality tumor recurrence-free survival (RFS) prediction model, which fused the prediction results from separate CT radiomics, PET radiomics, and clinical models. We performed 5-fold cross-validation to train and evaluate our methods on the MICCAI 2022 HEad and neCK TumOR segmentation and outcome prediction challenge (HECKTOR) dataset. The ensemble prediction results on the testing cohort achieved Dice scores of 0.77 and 0.73 for GTVp and GTVn segmentation, respectively, and a C-index value of 0.67 for RFS prediction. The code is publicly available (https://github.com/wangkaiwan/HECKTOR-2022-AIRT). Our team's name is AIRT.

Retinex-qDPC: automatic background rectified quantitative differential phase contrast imaging

The quality of quantitative differential phase contrast reconstruction (qDPC) can be severely degenerated by the mismatch of the background of two oblique illuminated images, yielding problematic phase recovery results. These background mismatches may result from illumination patterns, inhomogeneous media distribution, or other defocusing layers. In previous reports, the background is manually calibrated which is time-consuming, and unstable, since new calibrations are needed if any modification to the optical system was made. It is also impossible to calibrate the background from the defocusing layers, or for high dynamic observation as the background changes over time. To tackle the mismatch of background and increases the experimental robustness, we propose the Retinex-qDPC in which we use the images edge features as data fidelity term yielding L2-Retinex-qDPC and L1-Retinex-qDPC for high background-robustness qDPC reconstruction. The split Bregman method is used to solve the L1-Retinex DPC. We compare both Retinex-qDPC models against state-of-the-art DPC reconstruction algorithms including total-variation regularized qDPC, and isotropic-qDPC using both simulated and experimental data. Results show that the Retinex qDPC can significantly improve the phase recovery quality by suppressing the impact of mismatch background. Within, the L1-Retinex-qDPC is better than L2-Retinex and other state-of-the-art DPC algorithms. In general, the Retinex-qDPC increases the experimental robustness against background illumination without any modification of the optical system, which will benefit all qDPC applications.

High-fidelity quantitative differential phase contrast deconvolution using dark-field sparse prior

Differential phase contrast (DPC) imaging plays an important role in the family of quantitative phase measurement. However, the reconstruction algorithm for quantitative DPC (qDPC) imaging is not yet optimized, as it does not incorporate the inborn properties of qDPC imaging. In this research, we propose a simple but effective image prior, the dark-field sparse prior (DSP), to facilitate the phase reconstruction quality for all DPC-based phase reconstruction algorithms. The DSP is based on the key observation that most pixel values for an idea differential phase contrast image are zeros since the subtraction of two images under anti-symmetric illumination cancels all background components. With this DSP prior, we formed a new cost function in which L0-norm was used to represent the DSP. Further, we developed two different algorithms based on (1) the Half Quadratic Splitting, and (2) the Richardson-Lucy deconvolution to solve this NP-hard L0-norm problem. We tested our new model on both simulated and experimental data and compare against state-of-the-art methods including L2-norm and total variation regularizations. Results show that our proposed model is superior in terms of phase reconstruction quality and implementation efficiency, in which it significantly increases the experimental robustness, while maintaining the data fidelity.

Distantly Supervised Relation Extraction via Recursive Hierarchy-Interactive Attention and Entity-Order Perception

Wrong-labeling problem and long-tail relations severely affect the performance of distantly supervised relation extraction task. Many studies mitigate the effect of wrong-labeling through selective attention mechanism and handle long-tail relations by introducing relation hierarchies to share knowledge. However, almost all existing studies ignore the fact that, in a sentence, the appearance order of two entities contributes to the understanding of its semantics. Furthermore, they only utilize each relation level of relation hierarchies separately, but do not exploit the heuristic effect between relation levels, i.e., higher-level relations can give useful information to the lower ones. Based on the above, in this paper, we design a novel Recursive Hierarchy-Interactive Attention network (RHIA) to further handle long-tail relations, which models the heuristic effect between relation levels. From the top down, it passes relation-related information layer by layer, which is the most significant difference from existing models, and generates relation-augmented sentence representations for each relation level in a recursive structure. Besides, we introduce a newfangled training objective, called Entity-Order Perception (EOP), to make the sentence encoder retain more entity appearance information. Substantial experiments on the popular (NYT) dataset are conducted. Compared to prior baselines, our RHIA-EOP achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of precision-recall (P-R) curves, AUC, Top-N precision and other evaluation metrics. Insightful analysis also demonstrates the necessity and effectiveness of each component of RHIA-EOP.

Deep-learned speckle pattern and its application to ghost imaging

In this paper, we present a method for speckle pattern design using deep learning. The speckle patterns possess unique features after experiencing convolutions in Speckle-Net, our well-designed framework for speckle pattern generation. We then apply our method to the computational ghost imaging system. The standard deep learning-assisted ghost imaging methods use the network to recognize the reconstructed objects or imaging algorithms. In contrast, this innovative application optimizes the illuminating speckle patterns via Speckle-Net with specific sampling ratios. Our method, therefore, outperforms the other techniques for ghost imaging, particularly its ability to retrieve high-quality images with extremely low sampling ratios. It opens a new route towards nontrivial speckle generation by referring to a standard loss function on specified objectives with the modified deep neural network. It also has great potential for applications in the fields of dynamic speckle illumination microscopy, structured illumination microscopy, x-ray imaging, photo-acoustic imaging, and optical lattices.

Imaging through scattering media via spatial-temporal encoded pattern illumination

Optical imaging through scattering media is a long-standing challenge. Although many approaches have been developed to focus light or image objects through scattering media, they are either invasive, restricted to stationary or slowly-moving media, or require high-resolution cameras and complex algorithms to retrieve the images. Here we introduce a computational imaging technique that can overcome these restrictions by exploiting spatial-temporal encoded patterns (STEP). We present non-invasive imaging through scattering media with a single-pixel photodetector. We show that the method is insensitive to the motions of media. We further demonstrate that our image reconstruction algorithm is much more efficient than correlation-based algorithms for single-pixel imaging, which may allow fast imaging in currently unreachable scenarios.

Graph neural network-based fault diagnosis: a review

Graph neural network (GNN)-based fault diagnosis (FD) has received increasing attention in recent years, due to the fact that data coming from several application domains can be advantageously represented as graphs. Indeed, this particular representation form has led to superior performance compared to traditional FD approaches. In this review, an easy introduction to GNN, potential applications to the field of fault diagnosis, and future perspectives are given. First, the paper reviews neural network-based FD methods by focusing on their data representations, namely, time-series, images, and graphs. Second, basic principles and principal architectures of GNN are introduced, with attention to graph convolutional networks, graph attention networks, graph sample and aggregate, graph auto-encoder, and spatial-temporal graph convolutional networks. Third, the most relevant fault diagnosis methods based on GNN are validated through the detailed experiments, and conclusions are made that the GNN-based methods can achieve good fault diagnosis performance. Finally, discussions and future challenges are provided.
