Ultrafast and long-term stability Integrated Pockels laser with thin-film PZT

Integrated tunable lasers are central to coherent communications, wavelength-routed optical interconnects, spectroscopy and frequency-modulated continuous-wave LiDAR, yet chip-scale sources rarely combine broad wavelength coverage, nanosecond switching, high spectral purity and stable high-power operation. Here we demonstrate a frequency-agile hybrid external-cavity laser enabled by the Pockels effect in thin-film lead zirconate titanate (PZT). The strong linear electro-optic response of PZT provides direct, non-thermal tuning of compact microring resonators with a wavelength-tuning efficiency of 17 pm/V. In contrast to conventional anisotropic Pockels materials, the near-isotropic in-plane electro-optic behaviour of thin-film PZT relaxes crystal-axis layout constraints, allowing efficient Vernier wavelength selection in compact ring cavities. The PZT resonators also show no measurable photorefractive resonance distortion and no resolvable DC-bias drift during operation, preserving stable wavelength-selective feedback. The demonstrated laser achieves an 82 nm tuning range, a 5 mW fiber-coupled output power, a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) exceeding 56.7 dB, and a wavelength-switching time of 5.5 ns. These results establish thin-film PZT photonics as a powerful electro-optic platform for compact, high-power, and frequency-agile integrated laser sources.

Hybrid-plasticity Photonic Synapses Enabling Hardware-Level Neural Reuse

Biological intelligence is distinguished by neural reuse, the capacity to preserve established learning memory while repurposing it for new tasks and dynamic environments. Bringing this capability to photonic hardware requires hybrid plasticity, namely the coexistence of long-term synaptic plasticity for persistent weight storage and short-term synaptic plasticity for rapid, reversible adaptation within a single synaptic element; however, current photonic architectures lack such a unified mechanism. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid-plasticity photonic synapse on thin-film lead zirconate titanate (PZT) that couples non-volatile and volatile modes to enable hardware-level neural reuse. Crucially, high-speed refresh operations can be superimposed without perturbing the stored weight. Such a neural-reuse framework yields a convergence speedup of over 20-fold and reduces the weight updates by approximately 30-fold compared with random initialization. These results establish hybrid-plasticity photonic synapses as a pathway toward on-chip learning systems that are both memory-preserving and rapidly adaptable.

PZT Optical Memristors

Optical memristors represent a monumental leap in the fusion of photonics and electronics, heralding a new era of applications from neuromorphic computing to artificial intelligence. However, current technologies are hindered by complex fabrication, limited endurance, high optical loss or low modulation depth. For the first time, we reveal optical non-volatility in thin-film Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) by electrically manipulating the ferroelectric domains to control the refractive index, providing a brand-new routine for optical memristors. The developed PZT optical memristors offer unprecedented advantages more than exceptional performance metrics like low loss of <2 dB/cm, high precision exceeding 6-bits, large modulation depth with an index change as large as 4.6x10-3. Additionally, these devices offer impressive stability, maintaining minimal wavelength variation for over three weeks and enduring more than 10,000 cycles, and require a mere 0.8 pJ of energy for non-volatile operation. The wafer-scale sol-gel fabrication process also ensures compatible with standardized mass fabrication processes and high scalability for photonic integration. Specially, these devices also demonstrate unique functional duality: setting above a threshold voltage enables non-volatile behaviors, below this threshold allows volatile high-speed optical modulation. This marks the first-ever optical memristor capable of performing high-speed (48 Gbps) and energy-efficient (450 fJ/bit) signal processing and non-volatile retention on a single platform, and is also the inaugural demonstration of scalable functional systems. The PZT optical memristors developed here facilitate the realization of novel paradigms for high-speed and energy-efficient optical interconnects, programmable PICs, quantum computing, neural networks, in-memory computing and brain-like architecture.

Countering Eavesdroppers with Meta-learning-based Cooperative Ambient Backscatter Communications

This article introduces a novel lightweight framework using ambient backscattering communications to counter eavesdroppers. In particular, our framework divides an original message into two parts: (i) the active-transmit message transmitted by the transmitter using conventional RF signals and (ii) the backscatter message transmitted by an ambient backscatter tag that backscatters upon the active signals emitted by the transmitter. Notably, the backscatter tag does not generate its own signal, making it difficult for an eavesdropper to detect the backscattered signals unless they have prior knowledge of the system. Here, we assume that without decoding/knowing the backscatter message, the eavesdropper is unable to decode the original message. Even in scenarios where the eavesdropper can capture both messages, reconstructing the original message is a complex task without understanding the intricacies of the message-splitting mechanism. A challenge in our proposed framework is to effectively decode the backscattered signals at the receiver, often accomplished using the maximum likelihood (MLK) approach. However, such a method may require a complex mathematical model together with perfect channel state information (CSI). To address this issue, we develop a novel deep meta-learning-based signal detector that can not only effectively decode the weak backscattered signals without requiring perfect CSI but also quickly adapt to a new wireless environment with very little knowledge. Simulation results show that our proposed learning approach, without requiring perfect CSI and complex mathematical model, can achieve a bit error ratio close to that of the MLK-based approach. They also clearly show the efficiency of the proposed approach in dealing with eavesdropping attacks and the lack of training data for deep learning models in practical scenarios.

Mutilmodal Feature Extraction and Attention-based Fusion for Emotion Estimation in Videos

The continuous improvement of human-computer interaction technology makes it possible to compute emotions. In this paper, we introduce our submission to the CVPR 2023 Competition on Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW). Sentiment analysis in human-computer interaction should, as far as possible Start with multiple dimensions, fill in the single imperfect emotion channel, and finally determine the emotion tendency by fitting multiple results. Therefore, We exploited multimodal features extracted from video of different lengths from the competition dataset, including audio, pose and images. Well-informed emotion representations drive us to propose a Attention-based multimodal framework for emotion estimation. Our system achieves the performance of 0.361 on the validation dataset. The code is available at [https://github.com/xkwangcn/ABAW-5th-RT-IAI].

Dynamic Resource Allocation for Metaverse Applications with Deep Reinforcement Learning

This work proposes a novel framework to dynamically and effectively manage and allocate different types of resources for Metaverse applications, which are forecasted to demand massive resources of various types that have never been seen before. Specifically, by studying functions of Metaverse applications, we first propose an effective solution to divide applications into groups, namely MetaInstances, where common functions can be shared among applications to enhance resource usage efficiency. Then, to capture the real-time, dynamic, and uncertain characteristics of request arrival and application departure processes, we develop a semi-Markov decision process-based framework and propose an intelligent algorithm that can gradually learn the optimal admission policy to maximize the revenue and resource usage efficiency for the Metaverse service provider and at the same time enhance the Quality-of-Service for Metaverse users. Extensive simulation results show that our proposed approach can achieve up to 120% greater revenue for the Metaverse service providers and up to 178.9% higher acceptance probability for Metaverse application requests than those of other baselines.

MetaSlicing: A Novel Resource Allocation Framework for Metaverse

Creating and maintaining the Metaverse requires enormous resources that have never been seen before, especially computing resources for intensive data processing to support the Extended Reality, enormous storage resources, and massive networking resources for maintaining ultra high-speed and low-latency connections. Therefore, this work aims to propose a novel framework, namely MetaSlicing, that can provide a highly effective and comprehensive solution in managing and allocating different types of resources for Metaverse applications. In particular, by observing that Metaverse applications may have common functions, we first propose grouping applications into clusters, called MetaInstances. In a MetaInstance, common functions can be shared among applications. As such, the same resources can be used by multiple applications simultaneously, thereby enhancing resource utilization dramatically. To address the real-time characteristic and resource demand's dynamic and uncertainty in the Metaverse, we develop an effective framework based on the semi-Markov decision process and propose an intelligent admission control algorithm that can maximize resource utilization and enhance the Quality-of-Service for end-users. Extensive simulation results show that our proposed solution outperforms the Greedy-based policies by up to 80% and 47% in terms of long-term revenue for Metaverse providers and request acceptance probability, respectively.

Technical Report: Assisting Backdoor Federated Learning with Whole Population Knowledge Alignment

Due to the distributed nature of Federated Learning (FL), researchers have uncovered that FL is vulnerable to backdoor attacks, which aim at injecting a sub-task into the FL without corrupting the performance of the main task. Single-shot backdoor attack achieves high accuracy on both the main task and backdoor sub-task when injected at the FL model convergence. However, the early-injected single-shot backdoor attack is ineffective because: (1) the maximum backdoor effectiveness is not reached at injection because of the dilution effect from normal local updates; (2) the backdoor effect decreases quickly as the backdoor will be overwritten by the newcoming normal local updates. In this paper, we strengthen the early-injected single-shot backdoor attack utilizing FL model information leakage. We show that the FL convergence can be expedited if the client trains on a dataset that mimics the distribution and gradients of the whole population. Based on this observation, we proposed a two-phase backdoor attack, which includes a preliminary phase for the subsequent backdoor attack. In the preliminary phase, the attacker-controlled client first launches a whole population distribution inference attack and then trains on a locally crafted dataset that is aligned with both the gradient and inferred distribution. Benefiting from the preliminary phase, the later injected backdoor achieves better effectiveness as the backdoor effect will be less likely to be diluted by the normal model updates. Extensive experiments are conducted on MNIST dataset under various data heterogeneity settings to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed backdoor attack. Results show that the proposed backdoor outperforms existing backdoor attacks in both success rate and longevity, even when defense mechanisms are in place.

Multi-operator Network Sharing for Massive IoT

Recent study predicts that by 2020 up to 50 billion IoT devices will be connected to the Internet, straining the capacity of wireless network that has already been overloaded with data-hungry mobile applications, such as high-definition video streaming and virtual reality(VR)/augmented reality(AR). How to accommodate the demand for both massive scale of IoT devices and high-speed cellular services in the physically limited spectrum without significantly increasing the operational and infrastructure costs is one of the main challenges for operators. In this article, we introduce a new multi-operator network sharing framework that supports the coexistence of IoT and high-speed cellular services. Our framework is based on the radio access network (RAN) sharing architecture recently introduced by 3GPP as a promising solution for operators to improve their resource utilization and reduce the system roll-out cost. We evaluate the performance of our proposed framework using the real base station location data in the city of Dublin collected from two major operators in Ireland. Numerical results show that our proposed framework can almost double the total number of IoT devices that can be supported and coexist with other cellular services compared with the case without network sharing.

Adversarial FDI Attack against AC State Estimation with ANN

Artificial neural network (ANN) provides superior accuracy for nonlinear alternating current (AC) state estimation (SE) in smart grid over traditional methods. However, research has discovered that ANN could be easily fooled by adversarial examples. In this paper, we initiate a new study of adversarial false data injection (FDI) attack against AC SE with ANN: by injecting a deliberate attack vector into measurements, the attacker can degrade the accuracy of ANN SE while remaining undetected. We propose a population-based algorithm and a gradient-based algorithm to generate attack vectors. The performance of these algorithms is evaluated through simulations on IEEE 9-bus, 14-bus and 30-bus systems under various attack scenarios. Simulation results show that DE is more effective than SLSQP on all simulation cases. The attack examples generated by DE algorithm successfully degrade the ANN SE accuracy with high probability.

Statistical Inference Attack Against PHY-layer Key Extraction and Countermeasures

The formal theoretical analysis on channel correlations in both real indoor and outdoor environments are provided in this paper. Moreover, this paper studies empirical statistical inference attacks (SIA) against LSB key extraction, whereby an adversary infers the signature of a target link. Consequently, the secret key extracted from that signature has been recovered by observing the surrounding links. Prior work assumes theoretical link-correlation models for the inference, in contrast, our study does not make any assumption on link correlation. Instead, we take machine learning (ML) methods for link inference based on empirically measured link signatures. ML algorithms have been developed to launch SIAs under various realistic scenarios. Our experimental results have shown that the proposed inference algorithms are still quite effective even without making assumptions on link correlation. In addition, our inference algorithms can reduce the key search space by many orders of magnitudes compared to brute force search. We further propose a countermeasure against the statistical inference attacks, FBCH (forward-backward cooperative key extraction protocol with helpers). In the FBCH, helpers (other trusted wireless nodes) are introduced to provide more randomness in the key extraction. Our experiment results verify the effectiveness of the proposed protocol.
