Energy transfer channels of the plasmon excitation process in STM tunnel junctions

We study the decay of gap plasmons localized between a scanning tunneling microscope tip and metal substrate, excited by inelastic tunneling electrons. The overall excited energy from the tunneling electrons is divided into two categories in the form of resistive dissipation and electromagnetic radiation, which together can further be separated into four different channels, including SPP channel on the tip, SPP channel on the substrate, air mode channel and direct quenching channel. We find that most of the excited energy goes to surface plasmon polaritons on the metallic STM tip, rather than that on the substrate. The direct quenching in the apex of tip also takes a considerable portion especially in high frequency region.

Application of Spin-Exchange Relaxation-Free Magnetometry to the Cosmic Axion Spin Precession Experiment

The Cosmic Axion Spin Precession Experiment (CASPEr) seeks to measure oscillating torques on nuclear spins caused by axion or axion-like-particle (ALP) dark matter via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. A sample spin-polarized along a leading magnetic field experiences a resonance when the Larmor frequency matches the axion/ALP Compton frequency, generating precessing transverse nuclear magnetization. Here we demonstrate a Spin-Exchange Relaxation-Free (SERF) magnetometer with sensitivity $\approx 1~{\rm fT/\sqrt{Hz}}$ and an effective sensing volume of 0.1 $\rm{cm^3}$ that may be useful for NMR detection in CASPEr. A potential drawback of SERF-magnetometer-based NMR detection is the SERF's limited dynamic range. Use of a magnetic flux transformer to suppress the leading magnetic field is considered as a potential method to expand the SERF's dynamic range in order to probe higher axion/ALP Compton frequencies.

Flexible transparent high-voltage diodes for energy management in wearable electronics

This work reports flexible fully transparent high-voltage diodes that feature high rectification ratio (Rr 10 8) and high breakdown voltage (Vb 150 V) simultaneously, combined with their applications as building blocks of energy management systems in wearable electronics where triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are used as power source. Both experimental results and technology computer aided design (TCAD) simulations suggest that Rr and Vb can be modulated by the offset length in an opposite tendency. The low reverse leakage current (fA/MICRON) guarantees an ultra-low power consumption in standby mode, which is a core issue in wearable device applications. Besides the unprecedented electrical performance, the diodes exhibit good mechanical robustness with minimal degradation throughout the strain and fatigue tests. By incorporating these high-voltage diodes into half-wave and full-wave rectifier circuits, the high alternating current (AC) output voltage of TENGs is successfully rectified into direct current (DC) voltage and charged into supercapacitors (SCs), indicating their high integration and compatibility with TENGs, and thus their promising applications in various wearable electronic systems.

Tunable light trapping and absorption enhancement with graphene-based complementary metamaterials

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been intensively investigated and widely exploited to trap the incident light and enhance absorption in the optoelectronic devices. The availability of graphene as a plasmonic material with strong half-metallicity and continuously tunable surface conductivity makes it promising to dynamically modulate the absorption enhancement with graphene-based metamaterials. Here we numerically demonstrate tunable light trapping and absorption enhancement can be realized with graphene-based complementary metamaterials. Furthermore, we also explore the polarization sensitivity in the proposed device, in which case either TM or TE plane wave at the specific wavelength can be efficiently absorbed by simply manipulating the Fermi energy of graphene. Therefore, this work can find potential applications in the next generation of photodetectors with tunable spectral and polarization selectivity in the mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) regimes.

Tunable ultra-high-efficiency light absorption of monolayer graphene using critical coupling with guided resonance

We numerically demonstrate a novel monolayer graphene-based perfect absorption multi-layer photonic structure by the mechanism of critical coupling with guided resonance, in which the absorption of graphene can significantly close to 99% at telecommunication wavelengths. The highly efficient absorption and spectral selectivity can be obtained with designing structural parameters in the near infrared ranges. Compared to previous works, we achieve the complete absorption of single-atomic-layer graphene in the perfect absorber for the first time, which not only opens up new methods of enhancing the light-graphene interaction, but also makes for practical applications in high-performance optoelectronic devices, such as modulators and sensors.

Micrometer thick soft magnetic films with magnetic moments restricted strictly in plane by negative magnetocrystalline anisotropy

Stripe domains or any other type domain structures with part of their magnetic moments deviating from the film plane, which usually occur above a certain film thickness, are known problems that limit their potential applications for soft magnetic thin films (SMTFs). In this work, we report the growth of micrometer thick c-axis oriented hcp-Co84Ir16 SMTFs with their magnetic moments restricted strictly in plane by negative magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Extensive characterizations have been performed on these films, which show that they exhibit very good soft magnetic properties even for our micrometer thick films. Moreover, the anisotropy properties and high-frequency properties were thoroughly investigated and our results show very promising properties of these SMTFs for future applications.

3D MOKE spin-orbit torque magnetometer

We demonstrate simultaneous detection of current driven antidamping-like and field-like spin-orbit torques in heavy metal/ferromagnetic metal bilayers by measuring all three magnetization components m_(x,) m_y, and m_z using the vector magneto-optic Kerr effect. We have also implemented a self-calibration method to accurately determine the effective fields of spin-orbit torques. With this technique, we investigate the magnitude and direction of spin-orbit torques in a series of platinum/permalloy samples. The values found are in excellent agreement with results obtained via quadratic magneto-optic Kerr effect, planar Hall effect, and spin transfer ferromagnetic resonance measurements.

Microwatts continuous-wave pumped second harmonic generation in few- and mono-layer GaSe

We demonstrate the first achievement of continuous-wave (CW) pumped second harmonic generation (SHG) in few- and mono-layer gallium selenide (GaSe) flakes, which are coated on silicon photonic crystal (PC) cavities. Because of ultrahigh second order nonlinearity of the two-dimensional (2D) GaSe and localized resonant mode in the PC cavity, SHG's pump power is greatly reduced to microwatts. In a nine-layer GaSe coated PC cavity, while the optical power inside the GaSe flake is only 1.5 percent of that in the silicon PC slab, the SHG in GaSe is more than 650 times stronger than the third harmonic generation in silicon slab, indicating 2D GaSe's great potentials to strengthen nonlinear processes in silicon photonics. Our study opens up a new view to expand 2D materials' optoelectronic applications in nonlinear regime and chip-integrated active devices.

Comparison of the Green-Kubo and homogeneous non-equilibrium molecular dynamics methods for calculating thermal conductivity

Different molecular dynamics methods like the direct method, the Green-Kubo (GK) method and homogeneous non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (HNEMD) method have been widely used to calculate lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_\ell$). While the first two methods have been used and compared quite extensively, there is a lack of comparison of these methods with the HNEMD method. Focusing on the underlying computational parameters, we present a detailed comparison of the GK and HNEMD methods for both bulk and vacancy Si using the Stillinger-Weber potential. For the bulk calculations, we find both methods to perform well and yield $κ_\ell$ within acceptable uncertainties. In case of the vacancy calculations, HNEMD method has a slight advantage over the GK method as it becomes computationally cheaper for lower $κ_\ell$ values. This study could promote the application of HNEMD method in $κ_\ell$ calculations involving other lattice defects like nanovoids, dislocations, interfaces.

Active modulation of electromagnetically induced transparency analogue in terahertz hybrid metal-graphene metamaterials

Metamaterial analogues of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) have been intensively studied and widely employed for slow light and enhanced nonlinear effects. In particular, the active modulation of the EIT analogue and well-controlled group delay in metamaterials have shown great prospects in optical communication networks. Previous studies have focused on the optical control of the EIT analogue by integrating the photoactive materials into the unit cell, however, the response time is limited by the recovery time of the excited carriers in these bulk materials. Graphene has recently emerged as an exceptional optoelectronic material. It shows an ultrafast relaxation time on the order of picosecond and its conductivity can be tuned via manipulating the Fermi energy. Here we integrate a monolayer graphene into metal-based terahertz (THz) metamaterials, and realize a complete modulation in the resonance strength of the EIT analogue at the accessible Fermi energy. The physical mechanism lies in the active tuning the damping rate of the dark mode resonator through the recombination effect of the conductive graphene. Note that the monolayer morphology in our work is easier to fabricate and manipulate than isolated fashion. This work presents a novel modulation strategy of the EIT analogue in the hybrid metamaterials, and pave the way towards designing very compact slow light devices to meet future demand of ultrafast optical signal processing.

Observation of Spin-Orbit Effects with Spin Rotation Symmetry

The spin-orbit interaction enables interconversion between a charge current and a spin current. It is usually believed that in a nonmagnetic metal (NM) or at a NM/ferromagnetic metal (FM) bilayer interface, the symmetry of spin-orbit effects (SOE) requires that the spin current, charge current and spin orientation are all orthogonal to each other. Here we show the observation of a SOE near the NM/FM interface that exhibits a very different symmetry from the conventional spin Hall effect, insofar as the spin polarization is further rotated about the magnetization. These results imply that a perpendicularly polarized spin current can be generated with an in-plane charge current simply by use of a FM/NM bilayer with magnetization collinear to the charge current. The ability to generate a spin current with arbitrary polarization using typical magnetic materials will greatly benefit the development of magnetic memories.

List strong edge coloring of some classes of graphs

A {\em strong edge coloring} of a graph is a proper edge coloring in which every color class is an induced matching. The {\em strong chromatic index} of a graph is the minimum number of colors needed to obtain a strong edge coloring. In an analogous way, we can define the list version of strong edge coloring and list version of strong chromatic index. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a graph with maximum degree at most four and maximum average degree less than $3$, then the list strong chromatic index is at most $3Δ+ 1$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $G$. In addition, we prove that if $G$ is a planar graph with maximum degree at least $4$ and girth at least $7$, then the list strong chromatic index is at most $3Δ$.

almaBTE: a solver of the space-time dependent Boltzmann transport equation for phonons in structured materials

almaBTE is a software package that solves the space- and time-dependent Boltzmann transport equation for phonons, using only ab-initio calculated quantities as inputs. The program can predictively tackle phonon transport in bulk crystals and alloys, thin films, superlattices, and multiscale structures with size features in the nm-$μ$m range. Among many other quantities, the program can output thermal conductances and effective thermal conductivities, space-resolved average temperature profiles, and heat-current distributions resolved in frequency and space. Its first-principles character makes almaBTE especially well suited to investigate novel materials and structures. This article gives an overview of the program structure and presents illustrative examples for some of its uses.

A spectrally tunable plasmonic photosensor with an ultrathin semiconductor region

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been widely utilized to improve the absorption performance in the photosensors. Graphene has emerged as a promising plasmonic material, which supports tunable SPR and shows significant flexibility over metals. In this letter, a hybrid photosensor based on the integration of periodic cross-shaped graphene arrays with an ultrathin light-absorbing semiconductor is proposed. A tenfold absorption enhancement over a large range of the incidence angle for both light polarizations as well as a considerably high photogeneration rate ($\sim10^{37}$) is demonstrated at the resonance. Compared with traditional metal-based plasmon-enhanced photosensors, the absorption enhancement here can be expediently tuned with manipulating the Fermi energy of graphene. The proposed photosensor can amplify the photoresponse to the incidence light at the selected wavelength and thus be utilized in photosensing with high efficiency and tunable spectral selectivity in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) and terahertz (THz) regime.

On-Surface Pseudo-High Dilution Synthesis of Macrocycles: Principle and Mechanism

Macrocycles have attracted much attention due to their specific "endless" topology, which results in extraordinary properties compared to related linear (open-chain) molecules. However, challenges still remain in their controlled synthesis with well-defined constitution and geometry. Here, we report the first successful application of the (pseudo-)high dilution method to the conditions of on-surface synthesis in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). This approach leads to high yields (up to 84%) of cyclic hyperbenzene ([18]-honeycombene) via an Ullmann-type reaction from 4,4"-dibromo-meta-terphenyl (DMTP) as precursor on a Ag(111) surface. The mechanism of macrocycle formation was explored in detail using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). We propose that hyperbenzene (MTP)6 forms majorly by stepwise desilverization of an organometallic (MTP-Ag)6 macrocycle, which preforms via cyclisation of (MTP-Ag)6 chains under pseudo-high dilution condition. The high probability of cyclisation on the stage of the organometallic phase results from the reversibility of the C-Ag bond. The case is different from that in solution, in which cyclisation typically occurs on the stage of covalently bonded open-chain precursor. This difference in the cyclisation mechanism on a surface compared to that in solution stems mainly from the 2D confinement exerted by the surface template, which to a large extent prevents the flipping of chain segments necessary for cyclisation.

Strong interaction between graphene layer and Fano resonance in terahertz metamaterials

Graphene has emerged as a promising building block in the modern optics and optoelectronics due to its novel optical and electrical properties. In the mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) regime, graphene behaves like metals and supports surface plasmon resonances (SPRs). Moreover, the continuously tunable conductivity of graphene enables active SPRs and gives rise to a range of active applications. However, the interaction between graphene and metal-based resonant metamaterials has not been fully understood. In this work, a simulation investigation on the interaction between the graphene layer and THz resonances supported by the two-gap split ring metamaterials is systematically conducted. The simulation results show that the graphene layer can substantially reduce the Fano resonance and even switch it off, while leave the dipole resonance nearly unaffected, which phenomenon is well explained with the high conductivity of graphene. With the manipulation of graphene conductivity via altering its Fermi energy or layer number, the amplitude of the Fano resonance can be modulated. The tunable Fano resonance here together with the underlying physical mechanism can be strategically important in designing active metal-graphene hybrid metamaterials. In addition, the "sensitivity" to the graphene layer of the Fano resonance is also highly appreciated in the field of ultrasensitive sensing, where the novel physical mechanism can be employed in sensing other graphene-like two-dimensional (2D) materials or biomolecules with the high conductivity.

Time-dependent Hierarchical Dirichlet Model for Timeline Generation

Timeline Generation aims at summarizing news from different epochs and telling readers how an event evolves. It is a new challenge that combines salience ranking with novelty detection. For long-term public events, the main topic usually includes various aspects across different epochs and each aspect has its own evolving pattern. Existing approaches neglect such hierarchical topic structure involved in the news corpus in timeline generation. In this paper, we develop a novel time-dependent Hierarchical Dirichlet Model (HDM) for timeline generation. Our model can aptly detect different levels of topic information across corpus and such structure is further used for sentence selection. Based on the topic mined fro HDM, sentences are selected by considering different aspects such as relevance, coherence and coverage. We develop experimental systems to evaluate 8 long-term events that public concern. Performance comparison between different systems demonstrates the effectiveness of our model in terms of ROUGE metrics.

A Framework for Dynamic Stability Analysis of Power Systems with Volatile Wind Power

We propose a framework employing stochastic differential equations to facilitate the long-term stability analysis of power grids with intermittent wind power generations. This framework takes into account the discrete dynamics which play a critical role in the long-term stability analysis, incorporates the model of wind speed with different probability distributions, and also develops an approximation methodology (by a deterministic hybrid model) for the stochastic hybrid model to reduce the computational burden brought about by the uncertainty of wind power. The theoretical and numerical studies show that a deterministic hybrid model can provide an accurate trajectory approximation and stability assessments for the stochastic hybrid model under mild conditions. In addition, we discuss the critical cases that the deterministic hybrid model fails and discover that these cases are caused by a violation of the proposed sufficient conditions. Such discussion complements the proposed framework and methodology and also reaffirms the importance of the stochastic hybrid model when the system operates close to its stability limit.
