Universal linear-temperature dependence of static magnetic susceptibility in iron-pnictides

A universal linear-temperature dependence of the uniform magnetic susceptibility has been observed in the nonmagnetic normal state of iron-pnictides. This non-Pauli and non-Curie-Weiss-like paramagnetic behavior cannot be understood within a pure itinerant picture. We argue that it results from the existence of a wide antiferromagnetic fluctuation window in which the local spin-density-wave correlations exist but the global directional order has not been established yet.

Quantum transfer matrix method for one-dimensional disordered electronic systems

We develop a novel quantum transfer matrix method to study thermodynamic properties of one-dimensional (1D) disordered electronic systems. It is shown that the partition function can be expressed as a product of $2\times2$ local transfer matrices. We demonstrate this method by applying it to the 1D disordered Anderson model. Thermodynamic quantities of this model are calculated and discussed.

Bi-collinear antiferromagnetic order in the tetragonal $α$-FeTe

By the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we find that the ground state of PbO-type tetragonal $α$-FeTe is in a bi-collinear antiferromagnetic state, in which the Fe local moments ($\sim2.5μ_B$) are ordered ferromagnetically along a diagonal direction and antiferromagnetically along the other diagonal direction on the Fe square lattice. This bi-collinear order results from the interplay among the nearest, next nearest, and next next nearest neighbor superexchange interactions $J_1$, $J_2$, and $J_3$, mediated by Te $5p$-band. In contrast, the ground state of $α$-FeSe is in the collinear antiferromagnetic order, similar as in LaFeAsO and BaFe$_2$As$_2$.

String order and hidden topological symmetry in the SO(2n+1) symmetric matrix product states

We have introduced a class of exactly soluble Hamiltonian with either SO(2n+1) or SU(2) symmetry, whose ground states are the SO(2n+1) symmetric matrix product states. The hidden topological order in these states can be fully identified and characterized by a set of nonlocal string order parameters. The Hamiltonian possesses a hidden $(Z_{2}\times Z_{2})^{n} $ topological symmetry. The breaking of this hidden symmetry leads to $4^{n}$ degenerate ground states with disentangled edge states in an open chain system. Such matrix product states can be regarded as cluster states, applicable to measurement-based quantum computation.

Class of exactly solvable SO(n) symmetric spin chains with matrix product ground states

We introduce a class of exactly solvable SO(n) symmetric Hamiltonians with matrix product ground states. For an odd $n\geq 3$ case, the ground state is a translational invariant Haldane gap spin liquid state; while for an even $n\geq 4$ case, the ground state is a spontaneously dimerized state with twofold degeneracy. In the matrix product ground states for both cases, we identify a hidden antiferromagnetic order, which is characterized by nonlocal string order parameters. The ground-state phase diagram of a generalized SO(n) symmetric bilinear-biquadratic model is discussed.

Antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions in LaOFeAs

From first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of the ground state of LaOFeAs. The Fe spins are found to be collinear antiferromagnetic ordered, resulting from the interplay between the strong nearest and next-nearest neighbor superexchange antiferromagnetic interactions. The structure transition observed by neutron scattering is shown to be magnetically driven. Our study suggests that the antiferromagnetic fluctuation plays an important role in the Fe-based superconductors. This sheds light on the understanding of the pairing mechanism in these materials.

Rigorous Solution of the Spin-1 Quantum Ising Model with Single-ion Anisotropy

We solve the spin-1 quantum Ising model with single-ion anisotropy by mapping it onto a series of segmented spin-1/2 transverse Ising chains, separated by the $S^z =0$ states called holes. A recursion formula is derived for the partition function to simplify the summation of hole configurations. This allows the thermodynamic quantities of this model to be rigorously determined in the thermodynamic limit. The low temperature behavior is governed by the interplay between the hole excitations and the fermionic excitations within each spin-1/2 Ising segment. The quantum critical fluctuations around the Ising critical point of the transverse Ising model are strongly suppressed by the hole excitations.

Edge solitons of topological insulators and fractionalized quasiparticles in two dimensions

An important characteristic of topological band insulators is the necessary presence of in-gap edge states on the sample boundary. We utilize this fact to show that when the boundary is reconnected with a twist, there are always zero-energy defect states. This provides a natural connection between novel defects in the two-dimensional $p_{x}+ip_{y}$ superconductor, the Kitaev model, the fractional quantum Hall effect, and the one-dimensional domain wall of polyacetylene.

Topological characterization of quantum phase transitions in a S=1/2 spin model

We have introduced a novel Majorana representation of S=1/2 spins using the Jordan-Wigner transformation and have shown that a generalized spin model of Kitaev defined on a brick-wall lattice is equivalent to a model of non-interacting Majorana fermions with Z_2 gauge fields without redundant degrees of freedom. The quantum phase transitions of the system at zero temperature are found to be of topological type and can be characterized by nonlocal string order parameters. In appropriate dual representations, these string order parameters become local order parameters and the basic concept of Landau theory of continuous phase transition can be applied.

Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders in a staggered magnetic field

We study the low-energy excitations of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain and $N$-leg ($N$=2, 3, 4) ladders in a staggered magnetic field $h_s$. We show that $h_s$ induces gap and midgap states in all the cases and examine their field scaling behavior. A modified boundary scheme is devised to extract accurate bulk excitation behavior. The gap values converge rapidly as $N$ increases, leading to a field scaling exponent $γ=1/2$ for both the longitudinal and transverse gaps of the square lattice ($N \to \infty$). The midgap states induced by the boundary edge effects share the bulk gap scaling exponents but their overall scaling behavior in the large-N limit needs further investigation.

Midgap States in Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains with A Staggered Field

We study low-energy excitations in antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with a staggered field which splits the spectrum into a longitudinal and a transverse branch. Bound states are found to exist inside the field induced gap in both branches. They originate from the edge effects and are inherent to spin-chain materials. The sine-Gordon scaling $h_s^{2/3}|\log h_s|^{1/6}$ ($h_s$: the staggered field) provides an accurate description for the gap and midgap energies in the transverse branch for $S=1/2$ and the midgap energies in both branches for $S=3/2$ over a wide range of magnetic field; however, it can fit other low-energy excitations only at much lower field. Moreover, the integer-spin S=1 chain displays scaling behavior that does not fit this scaling law. These results reveal intriguing features of magnetic excitations in spin-chain materials that deserve further investigation.

Spin Hall current and two-dimensional magnetic monopole in a Corbino disk

A spin Hall current can circulate in a Corbino disk with spin-orbit interactions in the presence of a radial charge current, without encountering the sample edge problem. We have suggested several experiments to directly detect and manipulate the spin Hall current in this system. A fictitious two-dimensional magnetic monopole can be created in a Corbino disk with the Rashba interaction by a circular charge current induced either by a spin Hall current in the presence of a ferromagnetic junction or by a perpendicular external magnetic field.

Gapped spin liquid states in a one-dimensional Hubbard model with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction analytically and numerically. The bosonization and transfer-matrix renormalization group methods are used in the corresponding coupling regimes. At half-filling, the system is a Mott insulator with a finite spin excitation gap if the on-site Coulomb repulsion is fairly smaller than the antiferromagnetic exchange J. This Mott-insulator is characterized by the bond-charge-density-wave order or spontaneously dimerization. In the weak-coupling regime where the spin-charge separation holds approximately, the critical point separating the gapless and gapped spin liquid phases is U_c\sim J/2. However, as J increases, the spin-charge couplings become important and the critical point U_c is significantly suppressed and eventually tends to zero as J\to \infty. Away from half-filling, the charge gap completely collapses but the spin gap persists.

Electronic specific heat and low energy quasiparticle excitations in superconducting state of $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ single crystals

Low temperature specific heat has been measured and extensively analyzed on a series of $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ single crystals from underdoped to overdoped regime. From these data the quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the mixed state is derived and compared to the predicted scaling law $C_{vol}/T\sqrt{H}=f(T/\sqrt{H})$ of d-wave superconductivity. It is found that the scaling law can be nicely followed by the optimally doped sample (x=0.15) in quite wide region of ($T/\sqrt{H} \leq 8 K /\sqrt{T}$). However, the region for this scaling becomes smaller and smaller towards more underdoped region: a clear trend can be seen for samples from x=0.15 to 0.069. Therefore, generally speaking, the scaling quality becomes worse on the underdoped samples in terms of scalable region of $T/\sqrt{H}$. This feature in the underdoped region is explained as due to the low energy excitations from a second order (for example, anti-ferromagnetic correlation, d-density wave, spin density wave or charge density wave order) that may co-exist or compete with superconductivity. Surprisingly, deviations from the d-wave scaling law have also been found for the overdoped sample (x=0.22). While the scaling law is reconciled for the overdoped sample when the core size effect is taken into account. An important discovery of present work is that the zero-temperature data follow the Volovik's relation $Δγ(T=0)=A\sqrt{H}$ quite well for all samples investigated here although the applicability of the d-wave scaling law to the data at finite temperatures varies with doped hole concentration. Finally we present the doping dependence of some parameters, such as, the residual linear term $γ_0$, the $α$ value, etc. ...

Transition from band insulator to Mott insulator in one dimension: Critical behavior and phase diagram

We report a systematic study of the transition from a band insulator (BI) to a Mott insulator (MI) in a one-dimensional Hubbard model at half-filling with an on-site Coulomb interaction U and an alternating periodic site potential V. We employ both the zero-temperature density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method to determine the gap and critical behavior of the system and the finite-temperature transfer matrix renormalization group method to evaluate the thermodynamic properties. We find two critical points at U = $U_c$ and U = $U_s$ that separate the BI and MI phases for a given V. A charge-neutral spin-singlet exciton band develops in the BI phase (U<$U_c$) and drops below the band gap when U exceeds a special point Ue. The exciton gap closes at the first critical point $U_c$ while the charge and spin gaps persist and coincide between $U_c$ $U_s$) the charge gap increases almost linearly with U while the spin gap remains zero. These findings clarify earlier published results on the same model, and offer insights into several important issues regarding an appropriate scaling analysis of DMRG data and a full physical picture of the delicate nature of the phase transitions driven by electron correlation. The present work provides a comprehensive understanding for the critical behavior and phase diagram for the transition from BI to MI in one-dimensional correlated electron systems with a periodic alternating site potential.

A two-dimensional algorithm of the density matrix renormalization group

We propose a new approach to implement the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) in two dimensions. With this approach the initial blocks of a L by L lattice are built up directly from the matrix elements of a (L-1) by L-1) lattice and the topological characteristics of two dimensional lattices is preserved in the iteration of DMRG. By applying it to the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on both square and triangle lattices, we find that this approach is significantly more efficient and accurate than other two-dimensional DMRG methods currently in use.

Absence of the zero bias peak in vortex tunneling spectra of high temperature superconductors?

The c-axis tunneling matrix of high-Tc superconductors is shown to depend strongly on the in-plane momentum of electrons and vanish along the four nodal lines of the d(x^2-y^2)-wave energy gap. This anisotropic tunneling matrix suppresses completely the contribution of the most extended quasiparticles in the vortex core to the c-axis tunneling current and leads to a spectrum similar to that of a nodeless superconductor. Our results give a natural explanation of the absence of the zero bias peak as well as other features observed in the vortex tunneling spectra of high-Tc cuprates.

Thermodynamics of the bilinear-biquadratic spin one Heisenberg chain

The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of the one-dimensional S=1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model are calculated using the transfer matrix renormalization group. By comparing the results with the experimental data of ${\rm LiVGe_2O_6}$ measured by Millet et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 4176 (1999)), we find that the susceptibility data of this material, after subtracting the impurity contribution, can be quantitatively explained with this model. The biquadratic exchange interaction in this material is found to be ferromagnetic, i.e. with a positive coupling constant.
