Nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging of proteins in a single cell

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive and label-free technique widely used in medical diagnosis and life science research, and its success has benefited greatly from continuing efforts on enhancing contrast and resolution. Here we reported nanoscale MRI in a single cell using an atomic-size quantum sensor. With nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond, the intracellular protein ferritin has been imaged with a spatial resolution of ~ 10 nanometers, and ferritin-containing organelles were co-localized by correlative MRI and electron microscopy. Comparing to the current micrometer resolution in current state-of-art conventional MRI, our approach represents a 100-fold enhancement, and paves the way for MRI of intracellular proteins.

General stationary solutions of the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation and their relevance to the PT-symmetric system

With the stationary solution assumption, we establish the connection between the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NNLS) equation and an elliptic equation. Then, we obtain the general stationary solutions and discuss the relevance of their smoothness and boundedness to some integral constants. Those solutions, which cover the known results in the literature, include the unbounded Jacobi elliptic-function and hyperbolic-function solutions, the bounded sn-, cn- and dn-function solutions, as well as the hyperbolic soliton solutions. By the imaginary translation transformation of the NNLS equation, we also derive the complex-amplitude stationary solutions, in which all the bounded cases obey either the \PT- or anti-\PT-symmetric relation. In particular, the complex tanh-function solution can exhibit no spatial localization in addition to the dark and anti-dark soliton profiles, which is sharp contrast with the common dark soliton. Considering the physical relevance to \PT-symmetric system, we show that the complex-amplitude stationary solutions can yield a wide class of complex and time-independent \PT-symmetric potentials, and the symmetry breaking does not occur in the \PT-symmetric linear system with the associated potentials.

Rational solutions of the defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation: Asymptotic analysis and soliton interactions

In this paper, we obtain the Nth-order rational solutions for the defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation by the Darboux transformation and some limit technique. Then, via an improved asymptotic analysis method relying on the balance between different algebraic terms, we derive the explicit expressions of all asymptotic solitons of the rational solutions with the order 1<=N<=4. It turns out that the asymptotic solitons are localized in the straight or algebraic curves, and the exact solutions approach the curved asymptotic solitons with a slower rate than the straight ones. Moreover, we find that all the rational solutions exhibit just five different types of soliton interactions, and the interacting solitons are divided into two halves with each having the same amplitudes. Particularly for the curved asymptotic solitons, there may exist a slight difference for their velocities between at t and -t with certain parametric condition. In addition, we reveal that the soliton interactions in the rational solutions with N>=2 are stronger than those in the exponential and exponential-and-rational solutions.

Edge-Epitaxial Growth of InSe Nanowires toward High-Performance Photodetectors

Semiconducting nanowires offer many opportunities for electronic and optoelectronic device applications due to their special geometries and unique physical properties. However, it has been challenging to synthesize semiconducting nanowires directly on SiO2/Si substrate due to lattice mismatch. Here, we developed a catalysis-free approach to achieve direct synthesis of long and straight InSe nanowires on SiO2/Si substrate through edge-homoepitaxial growth. We further achieved parallel InSe nanowires on SiO2/Si substrate through controlling growth conditions. We attributed the underlying growth mechanism to selenium self-driven vapor-liquid-solid process, which is distinct from conventional metal-catalytic vapor-liquid-solid method widely used for growing Si and III-V nanowires. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the as-grown InSe nanowire-based visible light photodetector simultaneously possesses an extraordinary photoresponsivity of 271 A/W, ultrahigh detectivity of 1.57*10^14 Jones and a fast response speed of microsecond scale. The excellent performance of the photodetector indicates that as-grown InSe nanowires are promising in future optoelectronic applications. More importantly, the proposed edge-homoepitaxial approach may open up a novel avenue for direct synthesis of semiconducting nanowire arrays on SiO2/Si substrate.

Mixed soliton solutions of the defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation

By using the Darboux transformation, we obtain two new types of exponential-and-rational mixed soliton solutions for the defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We reveal that the first type of solution can display a large variety of interactions among two exponential solitons and two rational solitons, in which the standard elastic interaction properties are preserved and each soliton could be either the dark or antidark type. By developing the asymptotic analysis technique, we also find that the second type of solution can exhibit the elastic interactions among four mixed asymptotic solitons. But in sharp contrast to the common solitons, the asymptotic mixed solitons have the t-dependent velocities and their phase shifts before and after interaction also grow with |t| in the logarithmical manner. In addition, we discuss the degenerate cases for such two types of mixed soliton solutions when the four-soliton interaction reduces to a three-soliton or two-soliton interaction.

Rashba-like spin splitting along three momentum directions in trigonal layered PtBi2

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) has gained much attention for its rich physical phenomena and highly promising applications in spintronic devices. The Rashba-type SOC in systems with inversion symmetry breaking is particularly attractive for spintronics applications since it allows for flexible manipulation of spin current by external electric fields. Here, we report the discovery of a giant anisotropic Rashba-like spin splitting along three momentum directions (3D Rashba-like spin splitting) with a helical spin polarization around the M points in the Brillouin zone of trigonal layered PtBi2. Due to its inversion asymmetry and reduced symmetry at the M point, Rashba-type as well as Dresselhaus-type SOC cooperatively yield a 3D spin splitting with alpha~ 4.36 eVA in PtBi2. The experimental realization of 3D Rashba-like spin splitting not only has fundamental interests but also paves the way to the future exploration of a new class of material with unprecedented functionalities for spintronics applications.

The Warm Dark Matter Doorframe for Light Dark Matter Direct Detection Experiments

If dark matter has even been in sufficient thermal contact with the visible sector and sufficiently light ($m_χ\lesssim\mathcal{O}(10)~\text{keV}$), the thermal motion inherited from the visible sector will cause significant free streaming effect which is subject to the structure formation constraint, similar to the benchmark thermal warm dark matter model. Here we identify the interaction responsible for such thermal contact to be the interaction probed by the deep underground dark matter direct detection experiments. With the kinetic decoupling technique on the $m_χ$ vs. $σ$ plot we determine the bound shape in detail, and find that recasting the current Lyman-$α$ bound gives a constraint of $m_χ\gtrsim73~\text{keV}$, and it gets relaxed to $m_χ\gtrsim35~\text{keV}$ for a smaller cross section of $σ<10^{-46}~\text{cm}^2$ with some model dependence. That can be taken as a generic ``no go'' constraint for light dark matter direct detection experiments, and the known caveats are if dark matter is axion-like with an early Bose-Einstein condensation form, or if there is Brownian motion protection of the free streaming.

Displaced Lepton Jet Signatures from Self-Interacting Dark Matter Bound States

We study self-interacting dark matter signatures at the Large Hadron Collider. A light dark photon, mediating dark matter self-interactions, can bind dark matter particles to form a bound state when they are produced via a heavy pseduoscalar in $pp$ collisions. The bound state can further annihilate into a pair of boosted dark photons, which subsequently decay into charged leptons through a kinetic mixing portal, resulting in striking displaced lepton jet signals. After adapting the analysis used in the ATLAS experiment, we explore the reach of the model parameters at the $13~{\rm TeV}$ run with an integrated luminosity of $300~{\rm fb^{-1}}$. For heavy dark matter, the displaced lepton jet searches can surpass traditional monojet signals in setting the lower bound on the pseduoscalar mass. If a positive signal is detected, we can probe the dark matter mass and the dark coupling constant after combining both the displaced lepton jet and monojet searches. We further show the CMS dimuon search can be sensitive to the final state radiation of the dark photon. Our results demonstrate terrestrial collider experiments complement astronomical observations of galaxies in the search of the self-interacting nature of dark matter.

Multiobjective Optimization Differential Evolution Enhanced with Principle Component Analysis for Constrained Optimization

Multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) have been successfully applied to a number of constrained optimization problems. Many of them adopt mutation and crossover operators from differential evolution. However, these operators do not explicitly utilise features of fitness landscapes. To improve the performance of algorithms, this paper aims at designing a search operator adapting to fitness landscapes. Through an observation, we find that principle component analysis (PCA) can be used to characterise fitness landscapes. Based on this finding, a new search operator, called PCA-projection, is proposed. In order to verify the effectiveness of PCA-projection, we design two algorithms enhanced with PCA-projection for solving constrained optimization problems, called PMODE and HECO-PDE, respectively. Experiments have been conducted on the IEEE CEC 2017 competition benchmark suite in constrained optimisation. PMODE and HECO-PDE are compared with the algorithms from the IEEE CEC 2018 competition and another recent MOEA for constrained optimisation. Experimental results show that an algorithm enhanced with PCA-projection performs better than its corresponding opponent without this operator. Furthermore, HECO-PDE is ranked first on all dimensions according to the competition rules. This study reveals that decomposition-based MOEAs, such as HECO-PDE, are competitive with best single-objective and multiobjective evolutionary algorithms for constrained optimisation, but MOEAs based on non-dominance, such as PMODE, may not.

Darboux transformation and soliton solutions of the semi-discrete massive Thirring model

A one-fold Darboux transformation between solutions of the semi-discrete massive Thirring model is derived using the Lax pair and dressing methods. This transformation is used to find the exact expressions for soliton solutions on zero and nonzero backgrounds. It is shown that the discrete solitons have the same properties as solitons of the continuous massive Thirring model.

Quark jet versus gluon jet: fully-connected neural networks with high-level features

Jet identification is one of the fields in high energy physics that machine learning has begun to make an impact. More often than not, convolutional neural networks are used to classify jet images with the benefit that essentially no physics input is required. Inspired by a recent work by Datta and Larkoski, we study the classification of quark/gluon-initiated jets based on fully-connected neural networks (FNNs), where expert-designed physical variables are taken as input. FNNs are applied in two ways: trained separately on various narrow jet transverse momentum $p_{TJ}$ bins; trained on a wide region of $p_{TJ} \in [200,~1000]$ GeV. We find their performances are almost the same. The performance is better when the $p_{TJ}$ is larger. Jet discrimination with FNN is studied on both particle and detector level data. The results based on particle level data are comparable with those from deep convolutional neural networks, while the significance improvement characteristic (SIC) from detector level data would at most decrease by $15\%$. We also test the performance of FNNs with full set or subsets of jet observables as input features. The FNN with one subset consisting of fourteen observables shows nearly no degradation of performance. This indicates that these fourteen expert-designed observables could have captured the most necessary information for separating quark and gluon jets.

Computer-aided diagnosis in histopathological images of the endometrium using a convolutional neural network and attention mechanisms

Uterine cancer, also known as endometrial cancer, can seriously affect the female reproductive organs, and histopathological image analysis is the gold standard for diagnosing endometrial cancer. However, due to the limited capability of modeling the complicated relationships between histopathological images and their interpretations, these computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) approaches based on traditional machine learning algorithms often failed to achieve satisfying results. In this study, we developed a CADx approach using a convolutional neural network (CNN) and attention mechanisms, called HIENet. Because HIENet used the attention mechanisms and feature map visualization techniques, it can provide pathologists better interpretability of diagnoses by highlighting the histopathological correlations of local (pixel-level) image features to morphological characteristics of endometrial tissue. In the ten-fold cross-validation process, the CADx approach, HIENet, achieved a 76.91 $\pm$ 1.17% (mean $\pm$ s. d.) classification accuracy for four classes of endometrial tissue, namely normal endometrium, endometrial polyp, endometrial hyperplasia, and endometrial adenocarcinoma. Also, HIENet achieved an area-under-the-curve (AUC) of 0.9579 $\pm$ 0.0103 with an 81.04 $\pm$ 3.87% sensitivity and 94.78 $\pm$ 0.87% specificity in a binary classification task that detected endometrioid adenocarcinoma (Malignant). Besides, in the external validation process, HIENet achieved an 84.50% accuracy in the four-class classification task, and it achieved an AUC of 0.9829 with a 77.97% (95% CI, 65.27%-87.71%) sensitivity and 100% (95% CI, 97.42%-100.00%) specificity. In summary, the proposed CADx approach, HIENet, outperformed three human experts and four end-to-end CNN-based classifiers on this small-scale dataset composed of 3,500 hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) images regarding overall classification performance.

Vacuum Solution for Solov'ev's Equilibrium Configuration in Tokamaks

In this work, we have revisited the Solov'ev analytical solution for a tokamak equilibrium. We point out that the vacuum solution in the Solov'ev formulation is inapplicable, since a distributed current density is assumed to fill the vacuum. The realistic vacuum should be current-free. To amend this vacuum solution problem, we use Green's function method to compute the plasma current contribution, together with a homogeneous solution to the Grad-Shafranov equation, to construct the full solution. Matching with the Solov'ev solution on the last closed flux surface is performed to determine the homogeneous solution. The total solution is then extended into the vacuum region to get a realistic vacuum solution. We find that the actual vacuum solution is different from the Solov'ev solution in the vacuum region, especially the X-point structure. The X-point obtained at the last closed flux surface is not like the letter "X", and the expanded angle in the vacuum is larger than corresponding angle in the plasma at the null point. The results are important for understanding the X-point and separatrix structure. At the end of the paper, we have extended the classic Solovev's configuration to an ITER-like configuration, and obtained the full solution.

Multi-dark soliton solutions for the multi-component coupled Maccari system

Based on the KP hierarchy reduction method, the general multi-dark soliton solutions in Gram type determinant forms for the multi-component coupled Maccari system are constructed. Especially, the three-component coupled Maccari system comprised of two-component short waves and single-component long waves are discussed in detail. Besides, the dynamics of one and two dark-dark solitons are analyzed. It is shown that the collisions of two dark-dark solitons are elastic by asymptotic analysis. Additionally, the two dark-dark solitons bound states are studied through two different cases (stationary and moving cases). The bound states can exist up to arbitrary order in the stationary case, however, only two-soliton bound state exists in the moving case. Besides, the oblique stationary bound state can be generated for all possible combinations of nonlinearity coefficients consisted of positive, negative and mixed cases. Nevertheless, the parallel stationary and the moving bound states are only possible when nonlinearity coefficients take opposite signs.

Phonon-pump electronic-probe study of methylammonium lead iodide reveals electronically decoupled organic and inorganic sublattices

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites such as methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) are game-changing semiconductors for solar cells and light-emitting devices owing to their exceptionally long carrier lifetime and diffusion length. Determining whether the large dipole moment of the organic cation and dynamic disorder benefit the optoelectronic properties of CH3NH3PbI3 has been an outstanding challenge. Herein, via transient absorption measurements employing an infrared pump pulse tuned to a methylammonium vibration, we observe slow, nanosecond-long thermal dissipation from the selectively excited organic mode to the entire lattice. Resulting transient electronic signatures, during the period of thermal-nonequilibrium when the induced thermal motions are mostly concentrated on the organic sublattice, reveal that induced motions of the organic cations do not alter absorption or photoluminescence response of CH3NH3PbI3, beyond thermal effects. Our results suggest that the attractive optoelectronic properties of CH3NH3PbI3 mainly derive from the inorganic lead-halide framework.

Applying Deep Learning To Airbnb Search

The application to search ranking is one of the biggest machine learning success stories at Airbnb. Much of the initial gains were driven by a gradient boosted decision tree model. The gains, however, plateaued over time. This paper discusses the work done in applying neural networks in an attempt to break out of that plateau. We present our perspective not with the intention of pushing the frontier of new modeling techniques. Instead, ours is a story of the elements we found useful in applying neural networks to a real life product. Deep learning was steep learning for us. To other teams embarking on similar journeys, we hope an account of our struggles and triumphs will provide some useful pointers. Bon voyage!

Computer-Aided Diagnosis of Label-Free 3-D Optical Coherence Microscopy Images of Human Cervical Tissue

Objective: Ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence microscopy (OCM) has recently demonstrated its potential for accurate diagnosis of human cervical diseases. One major challenge for clinical adoption, however, is the steep learning curve clinicians need to overcome to interpret OCM images. Developing an intelligent technique for computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) to accurately interpret OCM images will facilitate clinical adoption of the technology and improve patient care. Methods: 497 high-resolution 3-D OCM volumes (600 cross-sectional images each) were collected from 159 ex vivo specimens of 92 female patients. OCM image features were extracted using a convolutional neural network (CNN) model, concatenated with patient information (e.g., age, HPV results), and classified using a support vector machine classifier. Ten-fold cross-validations were utilized to test the performance of the CADx method in a five-class classification task and a binary classification task. Results: An 88.3 plus or minus 4.9% classification accuracy was achieved for five fine-grained classes of cervical tissue, namely normal, ectropion, low-grade and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL and HSIL), and cancer. In the binary classification task (low-risk [normal, ectropion and LSIL] vs. high-risk [HSIL and cancer]), the CADx method achieved an area-under-the-curve (AUC) value of 0.959 with an 86.7 plus or minus 11.4% sensitivity and 93.5 plus or minus 3.8% specificity. Conclusion: The proposed deep-learning based CADx method outperformed three human experts. It was also able to identify morphological characteristics in OCM images that were consistent with histopathological interpretations. Significance: Label-free OCM imaging, combined with deep-learning based CADx methods, hold a great promise to be used in clinical settings for the effective screening and diagnosis of cervical diseases.

Chirality-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency based on a double semi-periodic helix metastructure

A chiral metastructure composed of spatially separated double semi-periodic helices is proposed and investigated theoretically and experimentally in this Letter. Chirality-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and a slow light effect in the microwave region are observed from a numerical parameter study, while experimental results from the 3D printing sample yield good agreement with the theoretical findings. The studied EIT phenomenon arises as a result of destructive interference by coupled resonances, and the proposed chiral metastructure can be applied in areas such as polarization communication, pump-probe characterization, and quantum computing areas.
