Electrically controlled nonvolatile switching of single-atom magnetism in a Dy@C84 single-molecule transistor

Single-atom magnetism switching is a key technique towards the ultimate data storage density of computer hard disks and has been conceptually realized by leveraging the spin bistability of a magnetic atom under a scanning tunnelling microscope. However, it has rarely been applied to solid-state transistors, an advancement that would be highly desirable for enabling various applications. Here, we demonstrate realization of the electrically controlled Zeeman effect in Dy@C84 single-molecule transistors, thus revealing a transition in the magnetic moment from 3.8 μB to 5.1 μB for the ground-state GN at an electric field strength of 3-10 MV/cm. The consequent magnetoresistance significantly increases from 600% to 1100% at the resonant tunneling point. Density functional theory calculations further corroborate our realization of nonvolatile switching of single-atom magnetism, and the switching stability emanates from an energy barrier of 92 meV for atomic relaxation. These results highlight the potential of using endohedral metallofullerenes for high-temperature, high-stability, high-speed, and compact single-atom magnetic data storage.

Spontaneous gap opening and potential excitonic states in an ideal Dirac semimetal Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$

The opening of an energy gap in the electronic structure generally indicates the presence of interactions. In materials with low carrier density and short screening length, long-range Coulomb interaction favors the spontaneous formation of electron-hole pairs, so-called excitons, opening an excitonic gap at the Fermi level. Excitonic materials host unique phenomenons associated with pair excitations. However, there is still no generally recognized single-crystal material with excitonic order, which is, therefore, awaited in condensed matter physics. Here, we show that excitonic states may exist in the quasi-one-dimensional material Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$, which has an almost ideal Dirac-like band structure, with Dirac point located exactly at Fermi level. We find that an energy gap appears at 350 K, and it grows with decreasing temperature. The spontaneous gap opening is absent in a similar material Ta$_2$Ni$_3$Te$_5$. Intriguingly, the gap is destroyed by the potassium deposition on the crystal, likely due to extra-doped carriers. Furthermore, we observe a pair of in-gap flat bands, which is an analog of the impurity states in a superconducting gap. All these observations can be properly explained by an excitonic order, providing Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$ as a new and promising candidate realizing excitonic states.

MicroCinema: A Divide-and-Conquer Approach for Text-to-Video Generation

We present MicroCinema, a straightforward yet effective framework for high-quality and coherent text-to-video generation. Unlike existing approaches that align text prompts with video directly, MicroCinema introduces a Divide-and-Conquer strategy which divides the text-to-video into a two-stage process: text-to-image generation and image\&text-to-video generation. This strategy offers two significant advantages. a) It allows us to take full advantage of the recent advances in text-to-image models, such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and DALLE, to generate photorealistic and highly detailed images. b) Leveraging the generated image, the model can allocate less focus to fine-grained appearance details, prioritizing the efficient learning of motion dynamics. To implement this strategy effectively, we introduce two core designs. First, we propose the Appearance Injection Network, enhancing the preservation of the appearance of the given image. Second, we introduce the Appearance Noise Prior, a novel mechanism aimed at maintaining the capabilities of pre-trained 2D diffusion models. These design elements empower MicroCinema to generate high-quality videos with precise motion, guided by the provided text prompts. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework. Concretely, MicroCinema achieves SOTA zero-shot FVD of 342.86 on UCF-101 and 377.40 on MSR-VTT. Dimensionality Reduction and Dynamical Mode Recognition of Circular Arrays of Flame Oscillators Using Deep Neural Network

Oscillatory combustion in aero engines and modern gas turbines often has significant adverse effects on their operation, and accurately recognizing various oscillation modes is the prerequisite for understanding and controlling combustion instability. However, the high-dimensional spatial-temporal data of a complex combustion system typically poses considerable challenges to the dynamical mode recognition. Based on a two-layer bidirectional long short-term memory variational autoencoder (Bi-LSTM-VAE) dimensionality reduction model and a two-dimensional Wasserstein distance-based classifier (WDC), this study proposes a promising method (Bi-LSTM-VAE-WDC) for recognizing dynamical modes in oscillatory combustion systems. Specifically, the Bi-LSTM-VAE dimension reduction model was introduced to reduce the high-dimensional spatial-temporal data of the combustion system to a low-dimensional phase space; Gaussian kernel density estimates (GKDE) were computed based on the distribution of phase points in a grid; two-dimensional WD values were calculated from the GKDE maps to recognize the oscillation modes. The time-series data used in this study were obtained from numerical simulations of circular arrays of laminar flame oscillators. The results show that the novel Bi-LSTM-VAE method can produce a non-overlapping distribution of phase points, indicating an effective unsupervised mode recognition and classification. Furthermore, the present method exhibits a more prominent performance than VAE and PCA (principal component analysis) for distinguishing dynamical modes in complex flame systems, implying its potential in studying turbulent combustion.

A Demand-Supply Cooperative Responding Strategy in Power System with High Renewable Energy Penetration

Industrial demand response (IDR) plays an important role in promoting the utilization of renewable energy (RE) in power systems. However, it will lead to power adjustments on the supply side, which is also a non-negligible factor in affecting RE utilization. To comprehensively analyze this impact while enhancing RE utilization, this paper proposes a power demand-supply cooperative response (PDSCR) strategy based on both day-ahead and intraday time scales. The day-ahead PDSCR determines a long-term scheme for responding to the predictable trends in RE supply. However, this long-term scheme may not be suitable when uncertain RE fluctuations occur on an intraday basis. Regarding intraday PDSCR, we formulate a profit-driven cooperation approach to address the issue of RE fluctuations. In this context, unreasonable profit distributions on the demand-supply side would lead to the conflict of interests and diminish the effectiveness of cooperative responses. To mitigate this issue, we derive multi-individual profit distribution marginal solutions (MIPDMSs) based on satisfactory profit distributions, which can also maximize cooperative profits. Case studies are conducted on an modified IEEE 24-bus system and an actual power system in China. The results verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for enhancing RE utilization, via optimizing the coordination of IDR flexibility with generation resources.

Fast-ParC: Capturing Position Aware Global Feature for ConvNets and ViTs

Transformer models have made tremendous progress in various fields in recent years. In the field of computer vision, vision transformers (ViTs) also become strong alternatives to convolutional neural networks (ConvNets), yet they have not been able to replace ConvNets since both have their own merits. For instance, ViTs are good at extracting global features with attention mechanisms while ConvNets are more efficient in modeling local relationships due to their strong inductive bias. A natural idea that arises is to combine the strengths of both ConvNets and ViTs to design new structures. In this paper, we propose a new basic neural network operator named position-aware circular convolution (ParC) and its accelerated version Fast-ParC. The ParC operator can capture global features by using a global kernel and circular convolution while keeping location sensitiveness by employing position embeddings. Our Fast-ParC further reduces the O(n2) time complexity of ParC to O(n log n) using Fast Fourier Transform. This acceleration makes it possible to use global convolution in the early stages of models with large feature maps, yet still maintains the overall computational cost comparable with using 3x3 or 7x7 kernels. The proposed operation can be used in a plug-and-play manner to 1) convert ViTs to pure-ConvNet architecture to enjoy wider hardware support and achieve higher inference speed; 2) replacing traditional convolutions in the deep stage of ConvNets to improve accuracy by enlarging the effective receptive field. Experiment results show that our ParC op can effectively enlarge the receptive field of traditional ConvNets, and adopting the proposed op benefits both ViTs and ConvNet models on all three popular vision tasks, image classification, object

Electric Field Measurement by Edge Transient Current Technique on Silicon Low Gain Avalanche Detector

A novel methodology, named the diffusion profile method, is proposed in this research to measure the electric field of a low gain avalanche detector (LGAD).The proposed methodology utilizes the maximum of the time derivative of the edge transient current technique (edge-TCT) test waveform to quantify the dispersion of the light-induced carriers. This method introduces the estimation of the elongation of the carrier cluster caused by diffusion and the divergence of the electric field force during its drift along the detector. The effectiveness of the diffusion profile method is demonstrated through the analysis of both simulated and measured edge-TCT waveforms. Experimental data was collected from a laser scan performed on an LGAD detector along its thickness direction.A simulation procedure has been developed in RASER (RAdiation SEmiconductoR) to generate signals from LGAD.An assumption of immediate one-step carrier multiplication is introduced to simplify the avalanche process.Simulation results were compared with transient current data at the waveform level and showed a favorable match. Both simulation and experimental results have shown that the diffusion profile method could be applied to certain edge-TCT facilities as an alternative of electric field measurement.

Hybrid GRU-CNN Bilinear Parameters Initialization for Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm

The Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), a pivotal paradigm in the realm of variational quantum algorithms (VQAs), offers promising computational advantages for tackling combinatorial optimization problems. Well-defined initial circuit parameters, responsible for preparing a parameterized quantum state encoding the solution, play a key role in optimizing QAOA. However, classical optimization techniques encounter challenges in discerning optimal parameters that align with the optimal solution. In this work, we propose a hybrid optimization approach that integrates Gated Recurrent Units (GRU), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), and a bilinear strategy as an innovative alternative to conventional optimizers for predicting optimal parameters of QAOA circuits. GRU serves to stochastically initialize favorable parameters for depth-1 circuits, while CNN predicts initial parameters for depth-2 circuits based on the optimized parameters of depth-1 circuits. To assess the efficacy of our approach, we conducted a comparative analysis with traditional initialization methods using QAOA on Erdős-Rényi graph instances, revealing superior optimal approximation ratios. We employ the bilinear strategy to initialize QAOA circuit parameters at greater depths, with reference parameters obtained from GRU-CNN optimization. This approach allows us to forecast parameters for a depth-12 QAOA circuit, yielding a remarkable approximation ratio of 0.998 across 10 qubits, which surpasses that of the random initialization strategy and the PPN2 method at a depth of 10. The proposed hybrid GRU-CNN bilinear optimization method significantly improves the effectiveness and accuracy of parameters initialization, offering a promising iterative framework for QAOA that elevates its performance.

PsyCoT: Psychological Questionnaire as Powerful Chain-of-Thought for Personality Detection

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have showcased remarkable zero-shot performance across various NLP tasks. However, the potential of LLMs in personality detection, which involves identifying an individual's personality from their written texts, remains largely unexplored. Drawing inspiration from Psychological Questionnaires, which are carefully designed by psychologists to evaluate individual personality traits through a series of targeted items, we argue that these items can be regarded as a collection of well-structured chain-of-thought (CoT) processes. By incorporating these processes, LLMs can enhance their capabilities to make more reasonable inferences on personality from textual input. In light of this, we propose a novel personality detection method, called PsyCoT, which mimics the way individuals complete psychological questionnaires in a multi-turn dialogue manner. In particular, we employ a LLM as an AI assistant with a specialization in text analysis. We prompt the assistant to rate individual items at each turn and leverage the historical rating results to derive a conclusive personality preference. Our experiments demonstrate that PsyCoT significantly improves the performance and robustness of GPT-3.5 in personality detection, achieving an average F1 score improvement of 4.23/10.63 points on two benchmark datasets compared to the standard prompting method. Our code is available at https://github.com/TaoYang225/PsyCoT.

Isolating the Nonlinear Optical Response of a MoS$_2$ Monolayer under Extreme Screening of a Metal Substrate

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) monolayers, as two-dimensional (2D) direct bandgap semiconductors, hold promise for advanced optoelectronic and photocatalytic devices. Interaction with three-dimensional (3D) metals, like Au, profoundly affects their optical properties, posing challenges in characterizing the monolayer's optical responses within the semiconductor-metal junction. In this study, using precise polarization-controlled final-state sum frequency generation (FS-SFG), we successfully isolated the optical responses of a MoS$_2$ monolayer from a MoS$_2$/Au junction. The resulting SFG spectra exhibit a linear lineshape, devoid of A or B exciton features, attributed to the strong dielectric screening and substrate induced doping. The linear lineshape illustrates the expected constant density of states (DOS) at the band edge of the 2D semiconductor, a feature often obscured by excitonic interactions in week-screening conditions such as in a free-standing monolayer. Extrapolation yields the onset of a direct quasiparticle bandgap of about $1.65\pm0.20$ eV, indicating a strong bandgap renormalization. This study not only enriches our understanding of the optical responses of a 2D semiconductor in extreme screening conditions but also provides a critical reference for advancing 2D semiconductor-based photocatalytic applications.

DisDiff: Unsupervised Disentanglement of Diffusion Probabilistic Models

Targeting to understand the underlying explainable factors behind observations and modeling the conditional generation process on these factors, we connect disentangled representation learning to Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DPMs) to take advantage of the remarkable modeling ability of DPMs. We propose a new task, disentanglement of (DPMs): given a pre-trained DPM, without any annotations of the factors, the task is to automatically discover the inherent factors behind the observations and disentangle the gradient fields of DPM into sub-gradient fields, each conditioned on the representation of each discovered factor. With disentangled DPMs, those inherent factors can be automatically discovered, explicitly represented, and clearly injected into the diffusion process via the sub-gradient fields. To tackle this task, we devise an unsupervised approach named DisDiff, achieving disentangled representation learning in the framework of DPMs. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of DisDiff.

Explore-Instruct: Enhancing Domain-Specific Instruction Coverage through Active Exploration

Instruction-tuning can be substantially optimized through enhanced diversity, resulting in models capable of handling a broader spectrum of tasks. However, existing data employed for such tuning often exhibit an inadequate coverage of individual domains, limiting the scope for nuanced comprehension and interactions within these areas. To address this deficiency, we propose Explore-Instruct, a novel approach to enhance the data coverage to be used in domain-specific instruction-tuning through active exploration via Large Language Models (LLMs). Built upon representative domain use cases, Explore-Instruct explores a multitude of variations or possibilities by implementing a search algorithm to obtain diversified and domain-focused instruction-tuning data. Our data-centric analysis validates the effectiveness of this proposed approach in improving domain-specific instruction coverage. Moreover, our model's performance demonstrates considerable advancements over multiple baselines, including those utilizing domain-specific data enhancement. Our findings offer a promising opportunity to improve instruction coverage, especially in domain-specific contexts, thereby advancing the development of adaptable language models. Dual-Feedback Knowledge Retrieval for Task-Oriented Dialogue Systems

Efficient knowledge retrieval plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success of end-to-end task-oriented dialogue systems by facilitating the selection of relevant information necessary to fulfill user requests. However, current approaches generally integrate knowledge retrieval and response generation, which poses scalability challenges when dealing with extensive knowledge bases. Taking inspiration from open-domain question answering, we propose a retriever-generator architecture that harnesses a retriever to retrieve pertinent knowledge and a generator to generate system responses.~Due to the lack of retriever training labels, we propose relying on feedback from the generator as pseudo-labels to train the retriever. To achieve this, we introduce a dual-feedback mechanism that generates both positive and negative feedback based on the output of the generator. Our method demonstrates superior performance in task-oriented dialogue tasks, as evidenced by experimental results on three benchmark datasets.

Vertical Allocation-based Fair Exposure Amortizing in Ranking

Result ranking often affects consumer satisfaction as well as the amount of exposure each item receives in the ranking services. Myopically maximizing customer satisfaction by ranking items only according to relevance will lead to unfair distribution of exposure for items, followed by unfair opportunities and economic gains for item producers/providers. Such unfairness will force providers to leave the system and discourage new providers from coming in. Eventually, fewer purchase options would be left for consumers, and the utilities of both consumers and providers would be harmed. Thus, to maintain a balance between ranking relevance and fairness is crucial for both parties. In this paper, we focus on the exposure fairness in ranking services. We demonstrate that existing methods for amortized fairness optimization could be suboptimal in terms of fairness-relevance tradeoff because they fail to utilize the prior knowledge of consumers. We further propose a novel algorithm named Vertical Allocation-based Fair Exposure Amortizing in Ranking, or VerFair, to reach a better balance between exposure fairness and ranking performance. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets show that VerFair significantly outperforms state-of-the-art fair ranking algorithms in fairness-performance trade-offs from both the individual level and the group level.

Generalized Robust Test-Time Adaptation in Continuous Dynamic Scenarios

Test-time adaptation (TTA) adapts the pre-trained models to test distributions during the inference phase exclusively employing unlabeled test data streams, which holds great value for the deployment of models in real-world applications. Numerous studies have achieved promising performance on simplistic test streams, characterized by independently and uniformly sampled test data originating from a fixed target data distribution. However, these methods frequently prove ineffective in practical scenarios, where both continual covariate shift and continual label shift occur simultaneously, i.e., data and label distributions change concurrently and continually over time. In this study, a more challenging Practical Test-Time Adaptation (PTTA) setup is introduced, which takes into account the concurrent presence of continual covariate shift and continual label shift, and we propose a Generalized Robust Test-Time Adaptation (GRoTTA) method to effectively address the difficult problem. We start by steadily adapting the model through Robust Parameter Adaptation to make balanced predictions for test samples. To be specific, firstly, the effects of continual label shift are eliminated by enforcing the model to learn from a uniform label distribution and introducing recalibration of batch normalization to ensure stability. Secondly, the continual covariate shift is alleviated by employing a source knowledge regularization with the teacher-student model to update parameters. Considering the potential information in the test stream, we further refine the balanced predictions by Bias-Guided Output Adaptation, which exploits latent structure in the feature space and is adaptive to the imbalanced label distribution. Extensive experiments demonstrate GRoTTA outperforms the existing competitors by a large margin under PTTA setting, rendering it highly conducive for adoption in real-world applications.

ConPET: Continual Parameter-Efficient Tuning for Large Language Models

Continual learning necessitates the continual adaptation of models to newly emerging tasks while minimizing the catastrophic forgetting of old ones. This is extremely challenging for large language models (LLMs) with vanilla full-parameter tuning due to high computation costs, memory consumption, and forgetting issue. Inspired by the success of parameter-efficient tuning (PET), we propose Continual Parameter-Efficient Tuning (ConPET), a generalizable paradigm for continual task adaptation of LLMs with task-number-independent training complexity. ConPET includes two versions with different application scenarios. First, Static ConPET can adapt former continual learning methods originally designed for relatively smaller models to LLMs through PET and a dynamic replay strategy, which largely reduces the tuning costs and alleviates the over-fitting and forgetting issue. Furthermore, to maintain scalability, Dynamic ConPET adopts separate PET modules for different tasks and a PET module selector for dynamic optimal selection. In our extensive experiments, the adaptation of Static ConPET helps multiple former methods reduce the scale of tunable parameters by over 3,000 times and surpass the PET-only baseline by at least 5 points on five smaller benchmarks, while Dynamic ConPET gains its advantage on the largest dataset. DDColor: Towards Photo-Realistic Image Colorization via Dual Decoders

Image colorization is a challenging problem due to multi-modal uncertainty and high ill-posedness. Directly training a deep neural network usually leads to incorrect semantic colors and low color richness. While transformer-based methods can deliver better results, they often rely on manually designed priors, suffer from poor generalization ability, and introduce color bleeding effects. To address these issues, we propose DDColor, an end-to-end method with dual decoders for image colorization. Our approach includes a pixel decoder and a query-based color decoder. The former restores the spatial resolution of the image, while the latter utilizes rich visual features to refine color queries, thus avoiding hand-crafted priors. Our two decoders work together to establish correlations between color and multi-scale semantic representations via cross-attention, significantly alleviating the color bleeding effect. Additionally, a simple yet effective colorfulness loss is introduced to enhance the color richness. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DDColor achieves superior performance to existing state-of-the-art works both quantitatively and qualitatively. The codes and models are publicly available at https://github.com/piddnad/DDColor.

QoS-aware User Association and Transmission Scheduling for Millimeter-Wave Train-ground Communications

With the development of wireless communication, people have put forward higher requirements for train-ground communications in the high-speed railway (HSR) scenarios. With the help of mobile relays (MRs) installed on the roof of the train, the application of Millimeter-Wave (mm-wave) communication which has rich spectrum resources to the train-ground communication system can realize high data rate, so as to meet users' increasing demand for broad-band multimedia access. Also, full-duplex (FD) technology can theoretically double the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we formulate the user association and transmission scheduling problem in the mm-wave train-ground communication system with MR operating in the FD mode as a nonlinear programming problem. In order to maximize the system throughput and the number of users meeting quality of service (QoS) requirements, we propose an algorithm based on coalition game to solve the challenging NP-hard problem, and also prove the convergence and Nash-stable structure of the proposed algorithm. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed coalition game based algorithm can effectively improve the system throughput and meet the QoS requirements of as many users as possible, so that the communication system has a certain QoS awareness.
