Pre-inflationary dynamics of Starobinsky inflation and its generization in Loop Quantum Brans-Dicke Cosmology

Recently, the nonperturbative quantization scheme of loop quantum gravity has been extended to the Brans-Dicke theory and the corresponding loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology has been derived, which provides an essential platform to explore inflationary models in this framework. In this paper, we consider two inflation models, the Starobinsky and $α$-attractor inflation whose cosmological predictions are in excellent agreement with Planck data, and study systematically their pre-inflationary dynamics as well as the slow-roll inflation. We show that for both models, the background evolution of a flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe in general can be divided into three different phases: the pre-inflationary quantum phase, quantum-to-classical transition, and the slow-roll inflation. The pre-inflationary dynamics are dominated by the quantum geometry effects of loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology and the corresponding Universe could be either initially expanding or contracting, depending on the initial velocity of inflaton field. It is shown that the detailed evolution of pre-inflationary quantum phase also depend on specific inflation models. After the pre-inflationary quantum phase, the universe gradually evolves into the slow-roll inflation with some of initial conditions for Starobinsky and $α$-attractor potentials. In addition, to be consistent with observational data, we also find the restricted parameter space of initial conditions that could produce at least $60$ $e$-folds during the slow-roll inflation.

Gravitational wave forms, polarizations, response functions and energy losses of triple systems in Einstein-Aether theory

Gravitationally bound hierarchies containing three or more components are very common in our Universe. In this paper we study {\em periodic} gravitational wave (GW) form, their polarizations, response function, its Fourier transform, and energy loss rate of a triple system through three different channels of radiation, the scalar, vector and tensor modes, in Einstein-aether theory of gravity. In the weak-field approximations and with the recently obtained constraints of the theory, we first analyze the energy loss rate of a binary system, and find that the dipole contributions from the scalar and vector modes could be of the order of ${\cal{O}}\left(c_{14}\right){\cal{O}}\left(G_Nm/d\right)^2$, where $c_{14} \; (\equiv c_{1} + c_{4})$ is constrained to $c_{14} \lesssim {\cal{O}}\left(10^{-5}\right)$ by current observations, where $c_i$'s are the four coupling constants of the theory. On the other hand, the "strong-field" effects for a binary system of neutron stars are about six orders lower than that of GR. So, in this paper we ignore these "strong-field" effects and first develop the general formulas to the lowest post-Newtonian order, by taking the coupling of the aether field with matter into account. Within this approximation, we find that the scalar breather mode and the scalar longitudinal mode are all suppressed by a factor of ${\cal{O}}\left(c_{14}\right)$ with respect to the transverse-traceless modes ($h_{+}$ and $h_{\times}$), while the vectorial modes $(h_{X}$ and $h_{Y}$) are suppressed by a factor of $c_{13} \lesssim {\cal{O}}\left(10^{-15}\right)$. Applying the general formulas to a triple system with periodic orbits, we find that the corresponding GW form, response function, and its Fourier transform depend sensitively on both the configuration of the triple system and their orientations with respect to the detectors.

Polarization evolution dynamics of dissipative soliton fiber laser

Dissipative solitons are localized solutions in non-integrable and non-conservative nonlinear system, due to a balance of nonlinearity, dispersion, filtering, and loss/gain. Different from conventional soliton, they exhibit extremely complex and striking dynamics, and are more universal in the far-from-equilibrium natural system. Taking advantage of dispersive Fourier transform and time lens, the spatio-temporal transient dynamics of dissipative solitons have been characterized with both amplitude and phase. Yet, a full avenue of the buildup process of dissipative soliton is full of debris for the lack of the polarization evolution information. Here, we characterize the probabilistic polarization distributions in the buildup of dissipative soliton in a net-normal dispersion fiber laser system mode-locked by single-wall carbon nanotubes. The lasing system operates from random amplified spontaneous emission to stable dissipative soliton when the cavity gain is increasing, and state of polarization of each wavelength convergence exponentially towards a fixed point. To reveal the invariant polarization relationship among various wavelengths, the phase diagram of the ellipticity angle and spherical orientation angle is introduced. We find that the polarization of each filtered wavelength in the central region of the dissipative soliton is linearly spaced, while those in the two fronts are spatially varying. Increasing cavity gain leads to spectrum broadening, meanwhile, the polarizations of the new generated frequencies are extending to scatter. Further increasing pump power results into dissipative soliton explosion, during which a kind of polarization optical rogue waves is identified. Those experimental results provide more information for deeper insights into the transient dynamics of dissipative soliton fiber laser.

Generation of multiple plasmons in strontium niobates mediated by local field effects

Recently, an anomalous generation of multiple plasmons with large spectral weight transfer in the visible to ultraviolet range (energies below the band gap) has been experimentally observed in the insulating-like phase of oxygen-rich strontium niobium oxides (SrNbO$_{3+δ}$). Here, we investigate the ground state and dielectric properties of SrNbO$_{3+δ}$ as a function of $δ$ by means of extensive first principle calculations. We find that in the random phase approximation by taking into account the local field effects (LFEs), our calculations are able to reproduce both the unconventional multiple generations of plasmons and spectral weight transfers, consistent with experimental data. Interestingly, these unconventional plasmons can be tuned by oxygen stoichiometry as well as microscopic superstructure. This unusual predominance of LFEs in this class of materials is ascribed to the strong electronic inhomogeneity and high polarizability and paves a new path to induce multiple plasmons in the untapped visible to ultraviolet ranges of insulating-like oxides.

Non-adiabatic Evolution of Primordial Perturbations and non-Gaussinity in Hybrid Approach of Loop Quantum Cosmology

While loop quantum cosmology (LQC) predicts a robust quantum bounce of the background evolution of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime prior to the standard slow-roll inflation, whereby the big bang singularity is resolved, there are several different quantization procedures to cosmological perturbations, for instance, {\em the deformed algebra, dressed metric, and hybrid quantizations}. This paper devotes to study the quantum bounce effects of primordial perturbations in the hybrid approach. The main discrepancy of this approach is the effective positive mass at the quantum bounce for the evolution of the background that is dominated by the kinetic energy of the inflaton field at the bounce, while this mass is always nonpositive in the dressed metric approach. It is this positivity of the effective mass that violates the adiabatic evolution of primordial perturbations at the initial moments of the quantum bounce. With the assumption that the evolution of the background is dominated by the kinetic energy of the inflaton at the bounce, we find that the effective potentials for both scalar and tensor perturbations can be well approximately described by a Pöschl-Teller (PT) potential, which allows us to find analytical solutions of perturbations, and from these analytical expressions we are able to study the non-adiabatic evolution of primordial perturbations in details. In particular, we derive their quantum bounce effects and investigate their observational constraints. In addition, the impacts of quantum bounce effects on the non-Gaussinity and their implication on the explanations of observed power asymmetry in CMB have also been explored.

Angular momentum loss for eccentric compact binary in screened modified gravity

Gravitational wave (GW) observations provide insight into the gravity regime. These observations relies on the comparison of the data to the GWs model, which depends on the orbital evolution of the binary systems. In this paper, we study the orbital evolution of eccentric compact binaries within screened modified gravity, which is a kind of scalar-tensor theory with screening mechanisms. According to the Noether's theorem, from the theory's GW action, we compute the angular momentum flux both as a function of the fields in the theory and as a function of the multipole moments of a N-body system. We specialize to the orbital parameters of eccentric compact binaries to express its orbital energy and angular momentum decay, and then derive the decay rates of its orbital eccentricity and semimajor axis. We find that these quantities decay faster than in General Relativity due to the presence of dipole radiation.

Waveforms of compact binary inspiral gravitational radiation in screened modified gravity

Scalar-tensor gravity, with the screening mechanisms to avoid the severe constraints of the fifth force in the Solar System, can be described with a unified theoretical framework, the so-called screened modified gravity (SMG). Within this framework, in this paper we calculate the waveforms of gravitational-waves (GWs) emitted by inspiral compact binaries, which include four polarization modes, the plus $h_{+}$, cross $h_{\times}$, breathing $h_{b}$, and longitudinal $h_{L}$ modes. The scalar polarizations $h_b$ and $h_L$ are both caused by the scalar field of SMG, and satisfy a simple linear relation. With the stationary phase approximations, we obtain their Fourier transforms, and derive the correction terms in the amplitude, phase, and polarizations of GWs, relative to the corresponding results in general relativity. The corresponding parametrized post-Einsteinian parameters in the general SMG are also identified. Imposing the noise level of the ground-based Einstein Telescope, we find that GW detections from inspiral compact binaries composed of a neutron star and a black hole can place stringent constraints on the sensitivities of neutron stars, and the bound is applicable to any SMG theory. Finally, we apply these results to some specific theories of SMG, including chameleon, symmetron, dilaton and $f(R)$.

Evidence of deviations from general relativity in binary pulsars?

Testing gravitational theories by binary pulsars nowadays becomes a key issue. For the general screened modified gravity (SMG), the post-Keplerian parameters in the neutron star (NS) - white dwarf (WD) binaries differ from those of general relativity (GR), and the differences are quantified by the scalar charge $ε_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm WD}$ of WD. After deriving the constraints on $ε_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm WD}$ from four different NS-WD binaries, we find that $ε_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm WD}$ is different from zero at the 2$σ$ level in all the cases studied, and there exists an inverse correlation between masses and scalar charges of low-mass WDs, which is consistent with the screening mechanisms. In particular, two independent binaries with measured radii of WDs follow the coincident constraints on the vacuum expectation value of the scalar field. These self-consistent results indicate that the observations in NS-WD binary pulsars seem in favor of SMG, rather than GR.

Interpretable Set Functions

We propose learning flexible but interpretable functions that aggregate a variable-length set of permutation-invariant feature vectors to predict a label. We use a deep lattice network model so we can architect the model structure to enhance interpretability, and add monotonicity constraints between inputs-and-outputs. We then use the proposed set function to automate the engineering of dense, interpretable features from sparse categorical features, which we call semantic feature engine. Experiments on real-world data show the achieved accuracy is similar to deep sets or deep neural networks, and is easier to debug and understand.

Long range fading free phase-sensitive reflectometry based on multi-frequency NLFM pulse

A long range phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (phi-OTDR) with a multi-frequency non-linear frequency modulation (NLFM) optical pulse is proposed in this Letter. To boost the pulse energy while suppressing the optical nonlinear effects, the distortion of the amplified pulse is rectified, and a three-tone pulse is used. Combining with the NLFM technic which provides 42.7 dB side lobe suppression ration (SLSR), these two approaches guarantee that a sensing distance of 80 km is achieved in the experiment with 2.5 m spatial resolution, 49.6 dB dynamic range, and 45 dB phase signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a phase-demodulated phi-OTDR over such a long sensing range has been reported with un-pumped sensing fiber.

Distributed fiber sparse-wideband vibration sensing by sub-Nyquist additive random sampling

The round trip time of the light pulse limits the maximum detectable vibration frequency response range of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (ϕ-OTDR). Unlike the uniform laser pulse interval in conventional ϕ-OTDR, we randomly modulate the pulse interval, so that an equivalent sub-Nyquist additive random sampling (sNARS) is realized for every sensing point of the long interrogation fiber. For an ϕ-OTDR system with 10 km sensing length, the sNARS method is optimized by theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulation, and the experimental results verify that a wide-band spars signal can be identified and reconstructed. Such a method can broaden the vibration frequency response range of ϕ-OTDR, which is of great significance in sparse-wideband-frequency vibration signal detection, such as rail track monitoring and metal defect detection.

Schwinger Pair Production by Electric Field Coupled to Inflaton

We analytically investigate the Schwinger pair production in the de Sitter background by using {\em the uniform asymptotic approximation method}, and show that the equation of motion in general has two turning points, and the nature of these points could be single, double, real or complex, depending on the choice of the free parameters involved in the theory. Different natures of these points lead to different electric currents. In particular, when $β\equiv m^2/H^2-9/4$ is positive, both turning points are complex, and the electric current due to the Schwinger process is highly suppressed, where $m$ and $H$ denote, respectively, the mass of the particle and the Hubble parameter. For the turning points to be real, it is necessary to have $β< 0$, and the more negative of $β$, the easier to produce particles. In addition, when $β< 0$, we also study the particle production when the electric field $E$ is very weak. We find that the electric current in this case is proportional to $E^{1/2 - \sqrt{|β|}}$, which is strongly enhanced in the weak electric field limit when $m < \sqrt{2} H$.

Optical puff mediated laminar-turbulent polarization transition

Various physical structures exhibit a fundamentally probabilistic nature over diverse scales in space and time, to the point that the demarcation line between quantum and classic laws gets blurred. Here, we characterize the probability of intermittency in the laminar-turbulence transition of a partially mode-locked fiber laser system, whose degree of coherence is deteriorated by multiple mode mixing. Two competing processes, namely the proliferation and the decay of an optical turbulent puff, determine a critical behavior for the onset of turbulence in such a nonlinear dissipative system. A new kind of optical rogue waves, polarization rogue waves, is introduced at the point of transition to polarization turbulence. The probabilistic description of the puff-mediated laminar-turbulence polarization transition provides an additional degree of freedom for our understanding of the complex physics of lasers.

All-optical wavelength-tunable narrow-linewidth fiber laser

Parameter regulations of narrow-linewidth fiber lasers in frequency domain has drawn considerable interests for widespread applications in the light quantum computing, precise coherent detection, and generation of micro-waves. All-optical methods provide compact, precise and fast accesses to achieving these lasers with wavelength-tunability. Here, the optical-thermal effects of graphene is utilized to precisely control operations of free-running lasers with a tuning speed of 140 MHz/ms. Assisted by the single-longitude-mode operation and linewidth suppression of stimulated Brillouin backscattering, we obtain an optical-controllable ~750 Hz fiber laser with a wavelength-tuning range of 3.7 nm.

Large valley splitting in monolayer WS$_2$ by proximity coupling to an insulating antiferromagnetic substrate

Lifting the valley degeneracy is an efficient way to achieve valley polarization for further valleytronics operations. In this work, we demonstrate that a large valley splitting can be obtained in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides by magnetic proximity coupling to an insulating antiferromagnetic substrate. As an example, we perform first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic structures of monolayer WS$_2$ on the MnO(111) surface. Our calculation results suggest that a large valley splitting of 214 meV, which corresponds to a Zeeman magnetic field of 1516 T, is induced in the valence band of monolayer WS$_2$. The magnitude of valley splitting relies on the strength of interfacial orbital hybridization, and can be continually tuned by applying an external out-of-plane pressure and in-plane strain. More interestingly, we find that both spin and valley index will flip when the magnetic ordering of MnO is reversed. Besides, owing to the sizeable Berry curvature and time-reversal symmetry breaking in the WS$_2$/MnO heterostructure, a spin and valley polarized anomalous Hall current can be generated in the presence of an in-plane electric field, which allow one to detect valleys by the electrical approach. Our results shed light on the realization of valleytronic devices using the antiferromagnetic insulator as the substrate.

Pre-inflationary universe in loop quantum cosmology

The evolutions of the flat FLRW universe and its linear perturbations are studied systematically in the dressed metric approach of LQC. When it is dominated by the kinetic energy of the inflaton at the quantum bounce, the evolution of the background can be divided into three different phases prior to the preheating, {\em bouncing, transition and slow-roll inflation}. During the bouncing phase, the evolution is independent of not only the initial conditions, but also the inflationary potentials. In particular, the expansion factor can be well described by the same exact solution in all the cases considered. In contrast, in the potential dominated case such a universality is lost. It is because of this universality that the linear perturbations are also independent of the inflationary models and obtained exactly. During the transition phase, the evolutions of the background and its linear perturbations are found explicitly, and then matched to the ones given in the other two phases. Hence, once the initial conditions are imposed, the linear scalar and tensor perturbations will be uniquely determined. Considering two different sets of initial conditions, one imposed during the contracting phase and the other at the bounce, we calculate the Bogoliubov coefficients and find that the two sets yield the same results and all lead to particle creations at the onset of the inflation. Due to the pre-inflationary dynamics, the scalar and tensor power spectra become scale-dependent. Comparing with the Planck 2015 data, we find constraints on the total e-folds that the universe must have expanded since the bounce, in order to be consistent with current observations.

Primordial non-Gaussianity and power asymmetry with quantum gravitational effects in loop quantum cosmology

Loop quantum cosmology (LQC) provides a resolution of the classical big bang singularity in the deep Planck era. The evolution, prior to the usual slow-roll inflation, naturally generates excited states at the onset of the slow-roll inflation. It is expected that these quantum gravitational effects could leave its fingerprints on the primordial perturbation spectrum and non-Gaussianity, and lead to some observational evidences in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). While the impact of the quantum effects on the primordial perturbation spectrum has been already studied and constrained by current data, in this paper we continue studying such effects on the non-Gaussianity of the primordial curvature perturbations. In this paper, we present detailed and analytical calculations of the non-Gaussianity and show explicitly that the corrections due to quantum effects are in the same magnitude of the slow-roll parameters in the observable scales and thus are well within current observational constraints. Despite this, we show that the non-Gaussianity in the squeezed limit can be enhanced at superhorizon scales and further, these effects may yield a large statistical anisotropy on the power spectrum through the Erickcek-Kamionkowski-Carroll mechanism.

Universal features of quantum bounce in loop quantum cosmology

In this Letter, we study analytically the evolutions of the flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe and its linear perturbations in the framework of {\em the dressed metric approach} in loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Assuming that the evolution of the background is dominated by the kinetic energy of the inflaton at the quantum bounce, we find that both evolutions of the background and its perturbations are independent of the inflationary potentials during the pre-inflationary phase. During this period the effective potentials of the perturbations can be well approximated by a Pöschl-Teller (PT) potential, from which we find analytically the mode functions and then calculate the corresponding Bogoliubov coefficients at the onset of the slow-roll inflation, valid for any inflationary model with a single scalar field. Imposing the Bunch-Davies (BD) vacuum in the contracting phase prior to the bounce when the modes are all inside the Hubble horizon, we show that particles are generically created due to the pre-inflation dynamics. Matching them to those obtained in the slow-roll inflationary phase, we investigate the effects of the pre-inflation dynamics on the scalar and tensor power spectra and find features that can be tested by current and forthcoming observations. In particular, to be consistent with the Planck 2015 data, we find that the universe must have expanded at least $141$ e-folds since the bounce.
