Gravitational quantum effects in the light of BICEP2 results

Recently BICEP2 found that the vanishing of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ is excluded at $7σ$ level, and its most likely value is $r=0.2^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$ at $1 σ$ level. This immediately causes a tension with the Planck constraint $r < 0.11$. In addition, it also implies that the inflaton (in single field slow-roll inflation) experienced a Planck excursion during inflation $Δϕ/M_{Pl} \geq {\cal{O}}(1)$, whereby the effective theory of inflation becomes questionable. In this brief report, we show that the inflationary paradigm is still robust, even after the quantum effects are taken into account. Moreover, these effects also help to relax the tension on the different values of $r$ given by BICEP2 and Planck.

Self-similarity, conservation of entropy/bits and the black hole information puzzle

John Wheeler coined the phrase "it from bit" or "bit from it" in the 1980s. However, much of the interest in the connection between information, i.e. "bits", and physical objects, i.e. "its", stems from the discovery that black holes have characteristics of thermodynamic systems having entropies and temperatures. This insight led to the information loss problem -- what happens to the "bits" when the black hole has evaporated away due to the energy loss from Hawking radiation? In this essay we speculate on a radical answer to this question using the assumption of self-similarity of quantum correction to the gravitational action and the requirement that the quantum corrected entropy be well behaved in the limit when the black hole mass goes to zero.

Vector rectangular-shape laser based on reduced graphene oxide interacting with long fiber taper

A vector dual-wavelength rectangular-shape laser (RSL) based on a long fiber taper deposited with reduced graphene oxide is proposed, where the nonlinearity is enhanced due to large evanescent-field-interacting length and strong field confinement of a 8 mm fiber taper with a waist diameter of 4 micronmeters. Graphene flakes are deposited uniformly on the taper waist with light pressure effect, so this structure guarantees both excellent saturable absorption and high nonlinearity. The RSL with a repetition rate of 7.9 MHz exhibits fast polarization switching in two orthogonal polarization directions, and the temporal and spectral characteristics are investigated. The results suggest that the long taper-based graphene structure is an efficient choice for nonlinear devices.

Post-Newtonian approximations in the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with extra U(1) symmetry

In this paper, we first propose a universal coupling between the gravity and matter in the framework of the Hořava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry for both the projectable and non-projectable cases. Then, using this universal coupling we study the post-Newtonian approximations and obtain the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameters in terms of the coupling constants of the theory. Contrary to the previous works in which only two PPN parameters were calculated, we obtain {\it all} PPN parameters. We then, for the first time in either projectable or non-projectable case, find that all the solar system tests carried out so far are satisfied in a large region of the parameters space. In particular, the same results obtained in general relativity can be easily realized here. A remarkable feature is that the solar system tests impose no constraint on the parameter $λ$ appearing in the kinetic part of the action. As a result, the solar system tests, when combined with the condition for avoidance of strong coupling, do not lead to an upper bound on the energy scale $M_{*}$ that suppresses higher dimensional operators in the theory. This is in sharp contrast to other versions of the HL theory.

Ultra-narrow Linewidth Fiber Laser with Self-injection Feedback Based on Rayleigh Backscattering

A single longitudinal mode fiber laser with ultra-narrow linewidth based on self-injection feedback by using the linewidth compress mechanism of Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) are proposed and demonstrated. Since the linewidth of RBS is narrower than that of the incident light in optical fibers and they have the same centre wavelength, the RBS can act as a mechanism to compress the linewidth of the incident light in fiber ring laser. In addition, more RBS signal could be collected to help further compress the laser linewidth besides the free spectral range is expanded when the self-injection feedback method is used. Our experimental results show that the side-mode suppression ratio of our laser is up to 75dB and the laser linewidth could be low to ~130Hz.

Wavelength Spacing Tunable, Multiwavelength Q-Switched Mode-Locked Laser Based on Graphene-Oxide-Deposited Tapered Fiber

A wavelength spacing tunable, multiwavelength Q-switched mode-locked (QML) fiber laser in an erbium-doped fiber cavity based on graphene oxide deposited on tapered fiber is proposed by choosing the diameter and length of the taper, graphene oxide thickness and cavity dispersion, in which the wavelength spacing could be tuned by pump power. The evolutions of temporal and spectral with different pump strengths are investigated. Results show that the tunability of the multiwavelength laser can be interpreted by the bound states of QML laser resulting from a mutual interaction of dispersion, nonlinear effect, insertion loss, and pump power. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first experimental observation of bound states of QML, which provides a new mechanism to fabricate tunable multiwavelength laser.

Primordial Non-Gaussianity of Gravitational Waves in Hořava-Lifshitz Gravity

In this paper, we study 3-point correlation function of primordial gravitational waves generated in the de Sitter background in the framework of the general covariant Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with an arbitrary coupling constant $λ$. We find that, at cubic order, the interaction Hamiltonian receives contributions from four terms built of the 3-dimensional Ricci tensor $R_{ij}$ of the leaves $t = $ constant. In particular, the 3D Ricci scalar $R$ yields the same $k$-dependence as that in general relativity, but with different magnitude due to coupling with the $U(1)$ field $A$ and a UV history. Interestingly, the two terms $R_{ij}R^{ij}$ and $\left(\nabla^{i}R^{jk}\right)\left(\nabla_{i}R_{jk}\right)$ exhibit peaks at the squeezed limit. We show that this is due to the effects of the polarization tensors. The signal generated by the fourth term, $R^i_j R^j_k R^k_i$, favors the equilateral shape when spins of the three tensor fields are the same, but peaks in between the equilateral and squeezed limits when spins are mixed. The consistency with the recently-released Planck observations on non-Gaussianity is also discussed and is found that $\left(H/M_*\right)^2\left(H/M_{pl}\right) \le 10^{-8}$, where $M_{*}$ denotes the suppression energy of high-order operators, $M_{pl}$ the Planck mass, and $H$ the energy of inflation.

Effects of parity violation on non-gaussianity of primordial gravitational waves in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

In this paper, we study the effects of parity violation on non-gaussianities of primordial gravitational waves in the framework of Hořava-Lifshitz theory of gravity, in which high-order spatial derivative operators, including the ones violating parity, generically appear. By calculating the three point function, we find that the leading-order contributions to the non-gaussianities come from the usual second-order derivative terms, which produce the same bispectrum as that found in general relativity. The contributions from high-order spatial n-th derivative terms are always suppressed by a factor $(H/M_*)^{n-2} \; (n \ge 3)$, where $H$ denotes the inflationary energy and $M_*$ the suppression mass scale of the high-order spatial derivative operators of the theory. Therefore, the next leading-order contributions come from the 3-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons term. With some reasonable arguments, it is shown that this 3-dimensional operator is the only one that violates the parity and in the meantime has non-vanishing contributions to non-gaussianities.

Inflationary cosmology with nonlinear dispersion relations

We present a technique, {\em the uniform asymptotic approximation}, to construct accurate analytical solutions of the linear perturbations of inflation after quantum effects of the early universe are taken into account, for which the dispersion relations generically become nonlinear. We construct explicitly the error bounds associated with the approximations and then study them in detail. With the understanding of the errors and the proper choice of the Liouville transformations of the differential equations of the perturbations, we show that the analytical solutions describe the exact evolution of the linear perturbations extremely well even only in the first-order approximations. As an application of the approximate analytical solutions, we calculate the power spectra and indices of scalar and tensor perturbations in the slow-roll inflation, and find that the amplitudes of the power spectra get modified due to the quantum effects, while the power spectrum indices remain the same as in the linear case.

The Velocity of Censorship: High-Fidelity Detection of Microblog Post Deletions

Weibo and other popular Chinese microblogging sites are well known for exercising internal censorship, to comply with Chinese government requirements. This research seeks to quantify the mechanisms of this censorship: how fast and how comprehensively posts are deleted. Our analysis considered 2.38 million posts gathered over roughly two months in 2012, with our attention focused on repeatedly visiting "sensitive" users. This gives us a view of censorship events within minutes of their occurrence, albeit at a cost of our data no longer representing a random sample of the general Weibo population. We also have a larger 470 million post sampling from Weibo's public timeline, taken over a longer time period, that is more representative of a random sample. We found that deletions happen most heavily in the first hour after a post has been submitted. Focusing on original posts, not reposts/retweets, we observed that nearly 30% of the total deletion events occur within 5- 30 minutes. Nearly 90% of the deletions happen within the first 24 hours. Leveraging our data, we also considered a variety of hypotheses about the mechanisms used by Weibo for censorship, such as the extent to which Weibo's censors use retrospective keyword-based censorship, and how repost/retweet popularity interacts with censorship. We also used natural language processing techniques to analyze which topics were more likely to be censored.

Inflation in general covariant Hořava-Lifshitz gravity without projectability

In this paper, we study inflation in the general covariant Hořava-Lifshitz gravity without the projectability condition. We write down explicitly the equations of the linear scalar perturbations of the FRW universe for a single scalar field without specifying to any gauge. Applying these equations to a particular gauge, we are able to obtain a master equation of the perturbations, in contrast to all the other versions of the theory without the projectability condition. This is because in the current version of the theory it has the same degree of freedom of general relativity. To calculate the power spectrum and index, we first define the initial conditions as the ones that minimize the energy of the ground state. Then, we obtain the full solutions of the equation of motion, by using the WKB approximations. From these solutions, we calculate the power spectrum and spectrum index of the comoving curvature perturbations and find the corrections due to the high order spatial derivative terms of the theory to those standard results obtained in general relativity. Remarkably, partly of corrections are a direct consequence of the non-projectability condition. It is also shown that the perturbations are still of scale-invariance, and the results obtained in the general covariant Hořava-Lifshitz gravity without the projectability condition are consistent with all current cosmological observations.

Polarizing primordial gravitational waves by parity violation

We study primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) in the Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory of quantum gravity, in which high-order spatial derivative operators, including the ones violating parity, generically appear in order for the theory to be power-counting renormalizable and ultraviolet (UV) complete. Because of both parity violation and non-adiabatic evolution of the modes due to a modified dispersion relationship, a large polarization of PGWs becomes possible, and it could be well within the range of detection of the BB, TB and EB power spectra of the forthcoming cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations.

U(1) symmetry and elimination of spin-0 gravitons in Horava-Lifshitz gravity without the projectability condition

In this paper, we show that the spin-0 gravitons appearing in Horava-Lifshitz gravity without the projectability condition can be eliminated by extending the gauge symmetries of the foliation-preserving diffeomorphisms to include a local U(1) symmetry. As a result, the problems of stability, ghost, strong coupling, and different speeds in the gravitational sector are automatically resolved. In addition, with the detailed balance condition softly breaking, the number of independent coupling constants can be significantly reduced (from more than 70 down to 15), while the theory is still UV complete and possesses a healthy IR limit, whereby the prediction powers of the theory are considerably improved. The strong coupling problem in the matter sector can be cured by introducing an energy scale $M_{*}$, so that $M_{*} < Λ_ω$, where $M_{*}$ denotes the suppression energy of high order derivative terms, and $Λ_ω$ the would-be strong coupling energy scale.

Tracking and Quantifying Censorship on a Chinese Microblogging Site

We present measurements and analysis of censorship on Weibo, a popular microblogging site in China. Since we were limited in the rate at which we could download posts, we identified users likely to participate in sensitive topics and recursively followed their social contacts. We also leveraged new natural language processing techniques to pick out trending topics despite the use of neologisms, named entities, and informal language usage in Chinese social media. We found that Weibo dynamically adapts to the changing interests of its users through multiple layers of filtering. The filtering includes both retroactively searching posts by keyword or repost links to delete them, and rejecting posts as they are posted. The trend of sensitive topics is short-lived, suggesting that the censorship is effective in stopping the "viral" spread of sensitive issues. We also give evidence that sensitive topics in Weibo only scarcely propagate beyond a core of sensitive posters.

General covariant Horava-Lifshitz gravity without projectability condition and its applications to cosmology

We consider an extended theory of Horava-Lifshitz gravity with the detailed balance condition softly breaking, but without the projectability condition. With the former, the number of independent coupling constants is significantly reduced. With the latter and by extending the original foliation-preserving diffeomorphism symmetry $ {Diff}(M, {\cal{F}})$ to include a local U(1) symmetry, the spin-0 gravitons are eliminated. Thus, all the problems related to them disappear, including the instability, strong coupling, and different speeds in the gravitational sector. When the theory couples to a scalar field, we find that the scalar field is not only stable in both the ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR), but also free of the strong coupling problem, because of the presence of high-order spatial derivative terms of the scalar field. Furthermore, applying the theory to cosmology, we find that due to the additional U(1) symmetry, the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe is necessarily flat. We also investigate the scalar, vector, and tensor perturbations of the flat FRW universe, and derive the general linearized field equations for each kind of the perturbations.

On strong coupling in nonrelativistic general covariant theory of gravity

We study the strong coupling problem in the Horava-Melby-Thompson setup of the Horava-Lifshitz gravity with an arbitrary coupling constant $λ$, generalized recently by da Silva, where $λ$ describes the deviation of the theory in the infrared from general relativity that has $λ_{GR} = 1$. We find that a scalar field in the Minkowski background becomes strong coupling for processes with energy higher than $Λ_ω [\equiv (M_{pl}/c_1)^{3/2} M_{pl}|λ- 1|^{5/4}]$, where generically $c_1 \ll M_{pl}$. However, this problem can be cured by introducing a new energy scale $M_{*}$, so that $M_{*} < Λ_ω$, where $M_{*}$ denotes the suppression energy of high order derivative terms of the theory.

An Analysis of Chinese Search Engine Filtering

The imposition of government mandates upon Internet search engine operation is a growing area of interest for both computer science and public policy. Users of these search engines often observe evidence of censorship, but the government policies that impose this censorship are not generally public. To better understand these policies, we conducted a set of experiments on major search engines employed by Internet users in China, issuing queries against a variety of different words: some neutral, some with names of important people, some political, and some pornographic. We conducted these queries, in Chinese, against Baidu, Google (including google.cn, before it was terminated), Yahoo!, and Bing. We found remarkably aggressive filtering of pornographic terms, in some cases causing non-pornographic terms which use common characters to also be filtered. We also found that names of prominent activists and organizers as well as top political and military leaders, were also filtered in whole or in part. In some cases, we found search terms which we believe to be "blacklisted". In these cases, the only results that appeared, for any of them, came from a short "whitelist" of sites owned or controlled directly by the Chinese government. By repeating observations over a long observation period, we also found that the keyword blocking policies of the Great Firewall of China vary over time. While our results don't offer any fundamental insight into how to defeat or work around Chinese internet censorship, they are still helpful to understand the structure of how censorship duties are shared between the Great Firewall and Chinese search engines.

"Charged" Particle's Tunneling from Rotating Black Holes

The behavior of a scalar field theory near the event horizon in a rotating black hole background can be effectively described by a two dimensional field theory in a gauge field background. Based on this fact, we proposal that the quantum tunneling from rotating black hole can be treated as "charged" particle' s tunneling process in its effectively two dimensional metric. Using this viewpoint and considering the corresponding "gauge charge" conservation, we calculate the non-thermal tunneling rate of Kerr black hole and Myers-Perry black hole, and results are consistent with Parikh-Wilczek's original result for spherically symmetric black holes. Especially for Myers-Perry black hole which has multi-rotation parameters, our calculation fills in the gap existing in the literature applying Parikh-Wilczek's tunneling method to various types black holes. Our derivation further illuminates the essential role of effective gauge symmetry in Hawking radiation from rotating black holes.
