An Improved Masking Strategy for Self-supervised Masked Reconstruction in Human Activity Recognition

Masked reconstruction serves as a fundamental pretext task for self-supervised learning, enabling the model to enhance its feature extraction capabilities by reconstructing the masked segments from extensive unlabeled data. In human activity recognition, this pretext task employed a masking strategy centered on the time dimension. However, this masking strategy fails to fully exploit the inherent characteristics of wearable sensor data and overlooks the inter-channel information coupling, thereby limiting its potential as a powerful pretext task. To address these limitations, we propose a novel masking strategy called Channel Masking. It involves masking the sensor data along the channel dimension, thereby compelling the encoder to extract channel-related features while performing the masked reconstruction task. Moreover, Channel Masking can be seamlessly integrated with masking strategies along the time dimension, thereby motivating the self-supervised model to undertake the masked reconstruction task in both the time and channel dimensions. Integrated masking strategies are named Time-Channel Masking and Span-Channel Masking. Finally, we optimize the reconstruction loss function to incorporate the reconstruction loss in both the time and channel dimensions. We evaluate proposed masking strategies on three public datasets, and experimental results show that the proposed strategies outperform prior strategies in both self-supervised and semi-supervised scenarios.

Constraints on Hairy Kerr black hole with quasi-periodic oscillations

The Hairy Kerr black hole is a novel black hole solution that depicts a rotating space-time encompassed by an axisymmetric fluid. It has significant observational importance and is an excellent candidate for an astrophysical black hole. Our study investigates the impact of the hairy charge on the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-ray binaries in the Hairy Kerr black hole (HKBH) space-time. The relativistic precession model is employed to compute the three principal frequencies of the accretion disk encircling the HKBH. We compare our outcomes with the observations of five X-ray binaries and employ a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation for restricting the hairy charge parameters. There is no substantial evidence for the existence of hairy charge in the HKBH space-time. Therefore, we are placing observational constraints on the deformation parameters with $0<α<0.07697$ and hairy charge values ranging from $0.27182<l_0/M<2.0$.

Constraints on the ghost-free parity-violating gravity from Laser-ranged Satellites

This paper explores the evolutionary behavior of the Earth-satellite binary system within the framework of the ghost-free parity-violating gravity and the corresponding discussion on the parity-violating effect from the laser-ranged satellites. For this purpose, we start our study with the Parameterized Post-Newtonian (PPN) metric of this gravity theory to study the orbital evolution of the satellites in which the spatial-time sector of the spacetime is modified due to the parity violation. With this modified PPN metric, we calculate the effects of the parity-violating sector of metrics on the time evolution of the orbital elements for an Earth-satellite binary system. We find that among the five orbital elements, the parity violation has no effect on the semi-latus rectum, while the eccentricity and ascending node are affected only in a periodic manner. These three orbital elements are the same as the results of general relativity and are also consistent with the observations of the present experiment. In particular, parity violation produces non-zero corrections to the eccentricity and pericenter, which will accumulate with the evolution of time, indicating that the parity violation of gravity produces observable secular effects. The observational constraint on the parity-violating effect is derived by confronting the theoretical prediction with the observation by the LAGEOS II pericenter advance, giving a constraint on the parity-violating parameter space from the satellite experiments.

Accretion disk around Reissner-Nordström black hole coupled with a nonlinear electrodynamics field

The phenomenon by which matter accumulates in the vicinity of a huge celestial object is known as accretion. The gravitational energy is excreted as a consequence of infalling matter onto compact objects. The accretion procedure around celestial bodies like neutron stars, white dwarfs, and black holes has considerable importance because of its ability to transform gravitational energy into radiation. This study investigates the particle's geodesic motion and accretion around the spherically symmetric Reissner-Nordström black hole coupled with a nonlinear electrodynamics field utilizing isothermal fluid. The formation of the disc-like structure in the accretion process arises from the geodesic motion exhibited by particles near the black hole. The circular orbits, radiant flux energy, radioactive efficiency, and radiant temperature, can be determined. Our study focuses on the examination of particles exhibiting stable circular orbits within the equatorial plane. We analyze the perturbations experienced by particles throughout employing restoring forces and the oscillatory behavior of the particles around a compact object. We conduct an analysis of the fluid's critical flow and maximum accretion rate. Our results show how the black hole parameter $ζ$ and charge $q$ affect the circular geodesic of particles and the maximum accretion rate of the Reissner-Nordström black hole coupled with nonlinear electrodynamics.

Matter accretion onto the magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg black hole with scalar hair

This paper deals with astrophysical accretion onto the magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg black holes with scalar hair. We examine the accretion process of a variety of perfect fluids, including polytropic and isothermal fluids of the ultra-stiff, ultra-relativistic, and sub-relativistic forms, when fluid is accreting in the vicinity of the black hole. By using the Hamiltonian dynamical approach, we can find the sonic or critical points numerically for the various types of fluids that are accreting onto the black hole. Furthermore, for several types of fluids, the solution is provided in closed form, expressing phase diagram curves. We compute the mass accretion rate of a magnetically charged Euler-Heisenberg black hole with scalar hair. We observe that the maximum accretion rate is attained for small values of the black hole parameters. We may be able to understand the physical mechanism of accretion onto black holes using the outcomes of this investigation.

Universal horizons and black hole spectroscopy in gravitational theories with broken Lorentz symmetry

The violation of Lorentz invariance (LI) in gravitational theories, which allows superluminal propagations, dramatically alters the causal structure of the spacetime and modifies the notion of black holes (BHs). Instead of metric horizons, now universal horizons (UHs) define the boundaries of BHs, within which a particle cannot escape to spatial infinities even with an infinitely large speed. Then, a natural question is how the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of a BH are modified, if one considers the UH as its causal boundary. In this paper, we study in detail this problem in Einstein-aether theory, a vector-tensor theory that violates LI but yet is self-consistent and satisfies all observations to date. Technically, this poses several challenges, including singularities of the perturbation equations across metric horizons and proper identifications of ingoing modes at UHs. After overcoming these difficulties, we show that the QNMs of the Schwarzschild BH, also a solution of Einstein-aether theory, consist of two parts, the metric and aether parts. The QNMs of the metric perturbations are quite similar to those obtained in general relativity and are consistent with current observations of gravitational waves. But the ones from aether perturbations are different, and our numerical studies indicate that they are even not stable. The latter is consistent with our previous studies, which showed that the stealth Schwarzschild BH suffers a Laplacian instability along the angular direction. The method and techniques developed in this paper can be applied to the studies of QNMs in other theories of gravity with broken LI.

Monotonicity and asymptotic behavior of solutions for Riemann-Liouville fractional differential equation

In this paper, we first investigate the monotonicity and limit problem of the fractional integral functions. By fixed point theorem and these new results of the fractional integral functions, we present that the Riemann-Liouville fractional differential equations has at least one decreasing solution in $C_{1-β}^{+}(0,+\infty)$. The asymptotic behavior of solutions is also discussed under some different conditions. The novelty in this paper is that we investigate the asymptotic behavior of Riemann-Liouville fractional differential equations by the monotonicity of functions. Finally, several examples are given to illustrate our main results.

Black hole scalarizations induced by parity violations

It is well-known that parity symmetry is broken in the weak interaction but conserved for Einstein's general relativity and Maxwell's electromagnetic theory. Nevertheless, parity symmetry could also be violated in the gravitational/electromagnetic sectors if a fundamental scalar field couples to the parity-violating gravitational/electromagnetic curvature terms. Such parity-violating terms, which flip signs under reversed spatial directions, can inevitably lead to a negative effective mass squared for the scalar field perturbations near nonspherically symmetric black holes and thus are expected to trigger tachyonic instability. As illustrative examples, we show that the scalar field coupled to gravitational/electromagnetic Chern-Simons terms near a Kerr-Newmann spacetime can develop tachyonic instabilities, leading to equilibrium scalar field configurations in certain parameter regions of black holes. This instability, which is an indication of the black hole scalarization process, can occur in a broad class of nonspherically symmetric black holes and parity-violating theories.

Periodic orbits and their gravitational wave radiations in a polymer black hole in loop quantum gravity

This article provides a detailed investigation into the motion of the surrounding particles around a polymer black hole in loop quantum gravity (LQG). Using effective potential, the critical bound orbits and innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) are analyzed. The study finds that the radii and angular momentum of the critical bound orbits decrease with an increase in the parameter $A_λ$ which labels the LQG effects, while the energy and angular momentum of the ISCO also decreases with an increase in $A_λ$. Based on these findings, we then explore the periodic orbits of the polymer black hole in LQG using rational numbers composed of three integers. Our results show that the rational numbers increase with the energy of particles and decrease with the increase of angular momentum based on a classification scheme. Moreover, compared to a Schwarzschild black hole, the periodic orbits in a polymer black hole in LQG consistently have lower energy, providing a potential method for distinguishing a polymer black hole in LQG from a Schwarzschild black hole. Finally, we also examine the gravitational wave radiations of the periodic orbits of a test object which orbits a supermassive polymer black hole in LQG, which generates intricate GW waveforms that can aid in exhibiting the gravitational structure of the system.

Constraints on the rotating self-dual black hole with quasi-periodic oscillations

An impressive feature of loop quantum gravity (LQG) is that it can elegantly resolve both the big bang and black hole singularities. By using the Newman-Janis algorithm, a regular and effective rotating self-dual black hole(SDBH) metric could be constructed, which alters the Kerr geometry with a polymeric function $P$ from the quantum effects of LQG geometry. In this paper, we investigate its impact on the frequency characteristics of the X-ray quasi-periodic oscillations(QPOs) from 5 X-ray binaries and contrast it with the existing results of the orbital, periastron precession and nodal precession frequencies within the relativistic precession model. We apply a Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) simulation to examine the possible LQG effects on the X-ray QPOs. We found that the best constraint result for the rotating self-dual geometry from LQG came from the QPOs of X-ray binary GRO J1655-40, which establish an upper bound on the polymeric function $P$ less than $6.17\times 10^{-3}$ at 95\% confidence level. This bound leads to a restriction on the polymeric parameter $δ$ of LQG to be 0.67.

TencentPretrain: A Scalable and Flexible Toolkit for Pre-training Models of Different Modalities

Recently, the success of pre-training in text domain has been fully extended to vision, audio, and cross-modal scenarios. The proposed pre-training models of different modalities are showing a rising trend of homogeneity in their model structures, which brings the opportunity to implement different pre-training models within a uniform framework. In this paper, we present TencentPretrain, a toolkit supporting pre-training models of different modalities. The core feature of TencentPretrain is the modular design. The toolkit uniformly divides pre-training models into 5 components: embedding, encoder, target embedding, decoder, and target. As almost all of common modules are provided in each component, users can choose the desired modules from different components to build a complete pre-training model. The modular design enables users to efficiently reproduce existing pre-training models or build brand-new one. We test the toolkit on text, vision, and audio benchmarks and show that it can match the performance of the original implementations.

Odd-parity perturbations of the wormhole-like geometries and quasi-normal modes in Einstein-Æther theory

The Einstein-$Æ$ther theory has drawn a lot of attentions in recent years. As a representative case of gravitational theories that break the Lorentz symmetry, it plays an important role in testing the Lorentz-violating effects and shedding light on the attempts to construct quantum gravity. Since the first detection to the gravitational wave, the event GW150914, a brand new window has been opened to testing the theory of gravity with gravitational wave observations. At the same time, the study of gravitational waves itself also provides us a serendipity of accessing the nature of a theory. In this paper, we focus on the odd-parity gravitational perturbations to a background that describes a wormhole-like geometry under the Einstein-$Æ$ther theory. Taking advantage of this set of analytic background solutions, we are able to simplify the Lagrangian and construct a set of coupled single-parameter dependent master equations, from which we solve for the quasi-normal modes that carry the physical information of the emitted gravitational waves. Basically, the results reflect a consistency between Einstein-$Æ$ther theory and general relativity. More importantly, as long as the no-ghost condition and the latest observational constraints are concerned, we notice that the resultant quasi-normal mode solutions intimate a kind of dynamical instability. Thus, the solutions are ruled out based on their stability against small linear perturbations.

Power Spectra of Slow-Roll inflation in the consistent $D\to 4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

The slow-roll inflation which took place at extremely high energy regimes is in general believed to be sensitive to the high-order curvature corrections to the classical general relativity (GR). In this paper, we study the effects of the high-order curvature term, the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term, on the primordial scalar and tensor spectra of the slow-roll inflation in the consistent $D \to 4$ Einstein Gauss-Bonnet (4EGB) gravity. The GB term is incorporated into gravitational dynamics via the re-scaling of the GB coupling constant $α\to α/(D-4)$ in the limit $ D\to 4$. For our purpose, we calculate explicitly the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra with GB corrections accurate to the next-to-leading order in the slow-roll approximation in the slow-roll inflation by using the third-order uniform asymptotic approximation method. The corresponding spectral indices and their runnings of the spectral indices for both the scalar and tensor perturbations as well as the ratio between the scalar and tensor spectra are also calculated up to the next-to-leading order in the slow-roll expansions. These results represent the most accurate results obtained so far in the literature. In addition, by studying the theoretical predictions of the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio with Planck 2018 constraint in a model with power-law potential, we show that the second-order corrections are important in future measurements.

Accretion disc around black hole in Einstein-$SU(N)$ non-linear sigma model

The accretion of matter onto celestial bodies like black holes and neutron stars is a natural phenomenon that releases up to $40\%$ of the matter's rest-mass energy, which is considered a source of radiation. In active galactic nuclei and X-ray binaries, huge luminosities are observed as a result of accretion. Using isothermal fluid, we examine the accretion and geodesic motion of particles in the vicinity of a spherically symmetric black hole spacetime in the Einstein-$SU(N)$ non-linear sigma model. In the accretion process, the disk-like structure is produced by the geodesic motion of particles near the black hole. We determine the innermost stable circular orbit, energy flux, radiation temperature, and radioactive efficiency numerically. In the equatorial plane, we investigate the mobility of particles with stabilities that form circular orbits. We examine perturbations of a test particle by using restoring forces and particle oscillations in the vicinity of the black hole. We analyze the maximum accretion rate and critical flow of the fluid. Our findings demonstrate how parameter $N$ influences the circular motion of a test particle as well as the maximum accretion rate of the black hole in the Einstein-$SU(N)$ non-linear sigma model.

Observational tests of quantum extension of Schwarzschild spacetime in loop quantum gravity with stars in the galactic center

In this paper, we use the publicly available observational data of 17 stellar stars orbiting Sgr A* to test the quantum extension of Schwarzschild spacetime in loop quantum gravity (LQG). For our purpose, we transform the geodesical evolution of a massive particle in the quantum-extended Schwarzschild black hole to the perturbed Kepler problem and calculate the effects of LQG on the pericentre advance of the stellar stars. With these effects, one is able to compare them with the publicly available astrometric and spectroscopic data of stellar stars in the galactic center. We perform Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) simulations to probe the possible LQG effects on the orbit of S-stars. No significant evidence of the quantum-extended Schwarzschild black hole from LQG is found. Among the posterior analyses of 17 S-stars, the result of S2 gives the strongest bound on the LQG parameter $A_λ$, which places an upper bound at 95\% confidence level on $A_λ$ to be $A_λ< 0.302$.

Blockchain Application on the Internet of Vehicles (IoV)

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its potential integration with the traditional Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs), we have witnessed the emergence of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), which promises to seamlessly integrate into smart transportation systems. However, the key characteristics of IoV, such as high-speed mobility and frequent disconnections make it difficult to manage its security and privacy. The Blockchain, as a distributed tamper-resistant ledge, has been proposed as an innovative solution that guarantees privacy-preserving yet secure schemes. In this paper, we review recent literature on the application of blockchain to IoV, in particular, and intelligent transportation systems in general.

Syntropic spin alignment at the interface between ferromagnetic and superconducting nitrides

The magnetic correlations at the superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) interfaces play a crucial role in realizing dissipation-less spin-based logic and memory technologies, such as triplet-supercurrent spin-valves and "π" Josephson junctions. Here we report the coexistence of an induced large magnetic moment and a crypto ferromagnetic state at high-quality nitride S/F interfaces. Using polarized neutron reflectometry and d. c. SQUID measurements, we quantitatively determined the magnetization profile of S/F bilayer and confirmed the induced magnetic moment in the adjacent superconductor only exists below TC. Interestingly, the direction of the induced moment in the superconductors was unexpectedly parallel to that in the ferromagnet, which contrasts with earlier findings in S/F heterostructures based on metals or oxides. The first-principles calculations verify the observed unusual interfacial spin texture is caused by the Heisenberg direct exchange coupling through d orbital overlapping and severe charge transfer across the interfaces. Our work establishes an incisive experimental probe for understanding the magnetic proximity behavior at S/F interfaces and provides a prototype epitaxial building block for superconducting spintronics.

Multi-scale Attentive Image De-raining Networks via Neural Architecture Search

Multi-scale architectures and attention modules have shown effectiveness in many deep learning-based image de-raining methods. However, manually designing and integrating these two components into a neural network requires a bulk of labor and extensive expertise. In this article, a high-performance multi-scale attentive neural architecture search (MANAS) framework is technically developed for image deraining. The proposed method formulates a new multi-scale attention search space with multiple flexible modules that are favorite to the image de-raining task. Under the search space, multi-scale attentive cells are built, which are further used to construct a powerful image de-raining network. The internal multiscale attentive architecture of the de-raining network is searched automatically through a gradient-based search algorithm, which avoids the daunting procedure of the manual design to some extent. Moreover, in order to obtain a robust image de-raining model, a practical and effective multi-to-one training strategy is also presented to allow the de-raining network to get sufficient background information from multiple rainy images with the same background scene, and meanwhile, multiple loss functions including external loss, internal loss, architecture regularization loss, and model complexity loss are jointly optimized to achieve robust de-raining performance and controllable model complexity. Extensive experimental results on both synthetic and realistic rainy images, as well as the down-stream vision applications (i.e., objection detection and segmentation) consistently demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/lcai-gz/MANAS.
