Ergodicity effects on transport-diffusion equations with localized damping

The main objective of this paper is to study the time decay of transport-diffusion equation with inhomogeneous localized damping in the multi-dimensional torus. The drift is governed by an autonomous Lipschitz vector field and the diffusion by the standard heat equation with small viscosity parameter $ν$. In the first part we deal with the inviscid case and show some results on the time decay of the energy using in a crucial way the ergodicity and the unique ergodicity of the flow generated by the drift. In the second part we analyze the same problem with small viscosity and provide quite similar results on the exponential decay uniformly with respect to the viscosity in some logarithmic time scaling of the \mbox{type $t\in [0,C_0\ln(1/ν)]$}.

Existence of corotating asymmetric vortex pairs for Euler equations

In this paper, we study the existence of co-rotating and counter-rotating unequal-sized pairs of simply connected patches for Euler equations. In particular, we prove the existence of curves of steadily co-rotating and counter-rotating asymmetric vortex pairs passing through a point vortex pairs with unequal circulations.

Non uniform rotating vortices and periodic orbits for the two-dimensional Euler Equations

This paper concerns the study of some special ordered structures in turbulent flows. In particular, a systematic and relevant methodology is proposed to construct non trivial and non radial rotating vortices with non necessarily uniform densities and with different $m$--fold symmetries, $m\ge 1$. In particular, a complete study is provided for the truncated quadratic density $(A|x|^2+B){\bf{1}}_{\mathbb{D}}(x)$, with $\mathbb{D}$ the unit disc. We exhibit different behaviors with respect to the coefficients $A$ and $B$ describing the rarefaction of bifurcating curves.

Dynamics of one fold symmetric patches for the aggregation equation and collapse to singular measure

We are concerned with the dynamics of one fold symmetric patches for the two-dimensional aggregation equation associated to the Newtonian potential. We reformulate a suitable graph model and prove a local well-posedness result in sub-critical and critical spaces. The global existence is obtained only for small initial data using a weak damping property hidden in the velocity terms. This allows to analyze the concentration phenomenon of the aggregation patches near the blow up time. In particular, we prove that the patch collapses to a collection of disjoint segments and we provide a description of the singular measure through a careful study of the asymptotic behavior of the graph.

Existence of corotating and counter-rotating vortex pairs for active scalar equations

In this paper, we study the existence of corotating and counter-rotating pairs of simply connected patches for Euler equations and the $(\hbox{SQG})_α$ equations with $α\in (0,1).$ From the numerical experiments implemented for Euler equations in \cite{DZ, humbert, S-Z} it is conjectured the existence of a curve of steady vortex pairs passing through the point vortex pairs. There are some analytical proofs based on variational principle \cite{keady, Tur}, however they do not give enough information about the pairs such as the uniqueness or the topological structure of each single vortex. We intend in this paper to give direct proofs confirming the numerical experiments and extend these results for the $(\hbox{SQG})_α$ equation when $α\in (0,1)$. The proofs rely on the contour dynamics equations combined with a desingularization of the point vortex pairs and the application of the implicit function theorem.

Imperfect bifurcation for the quasi-geostrophic shallow-water equations

We study analytical and numerical aspects of the bifurcation diagram of simply-connected rotating vortex patch equilibria for the quasi-geostrophic shallow-water (QGSW) equations. The QGSW equations are a generalisation of the Euler equations and contain an additional parameter, the Rossby deformation length $\EE^{-1}$, which enters in the relation between streamfunction and (potential) vorticity. The Euler equations are recovered in the limit $\EE\to 0$. We prove, close to circular (Rankine) vortices, the persistence of the bifurcation diagram for arbitrary Rossby deformation length. However we show that the two-fold branch, corresponding to Kirchhoff ellipses for the Euler equations, is never connected even for small values $\EE$, and indeed is split into a countable set of disjoint connected branches. Accurate numerical calculations of the global structure of the bifurcation diagram and of the limiting equilibrium states are also presented to complement the mathematical analysis.

Existence of small loops in the Bifurcation diagram near the degenerate eigenvalues

In this paper we study for the incompressible Euler equations the global structure of the bifurcation diagram for the rotating doubly connected patches near the degenerate case. We show that the branches with the same symmetry merge forming a small loop provided that they are close enough. This confirms the numerical observations done in the recent work [10]

Degenerate bifurcation of the rotating patches

In this paper we study the existence of doubly-connected rotating patches for Euler equations when the classical non-degeneracy conditions are not satisfied. We prove the bifurcation of the V-states with two-fold symmetry, however for higher $m-$fold symmetry with $m\geq3$ the bifurcation does not occur. This answers to a problem left open in \cite{H-F-M-V}. Note that, contrary to the known results for simply-connected and doubly-connected cases where the bifurcation is pitchfork, we show that the degenerate bifurcation is actually transcritical. These results are in agreement with the numerical observations recently discussed in \cite{H-F-M-V}. The proofs stem from the local structure of the quadratic form associated to the reduced bifurcation equation.

An analytical and numerical study of steady patches in the disc

In this paper, we prove the existence of $m$-fold rotating patches for the Euler equations in the disc, for both simply-connected and doubly-connected cases. Compared to the planar case, the rigid boundary introduces rich dynamics for the lowest symmetries $m=1$ and $m=2$. We also discuss some numerical experiments highlighting the interaction between the boundary of the patch and the rigid one.

Doubly connected V-states for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations

In this paper, we prove the existence of doubly connected V-states for the generalized SQG equations with $α\in ]0,1[.$ They can be described by countable branches bifurcating from the annulus at some explicit "eigenvalues" related to Bessel functions of the first kind. Contrary to Euler equations \cite{H-F-M-V}, we find V-states rotating with positive and negative angular velocities. At the end of the paper we discuss some numerical experiments concerning the limiting V-states.

Boundary regularity of rotating vortex patches

We show that the boundary of a rotating vortex patch (or V-state, in the terminology of Deem and Zabusky) is of class C^infinity provided the patch is close enough to the bifurcation circle in the Lipschitz norm. The rotating patch is convex if it is close enough to the bifurcation circle in the C^2 norm. Our proof is based on Burbea's approach to V-states. Thus conformal mapping plays a relevant role as well as estimating, on Hölder spaces, certain non-convolution singular integral operators of Calderón-Zygmund type.

On the trivial solutions for the rotating patch model

In this paper we study the clockwise simply connected rotating patches for Euler equations. By using the moving plane method we prove that Rankine vortices are the only solutions to this problem in the class of {\it slightly} convex domains. We discuss in the second part of the paper the case where the angular velocity $Ω=\frac12$ and we show without any geometric condition that the set of the V-states is trivial and reduced to the Rankine vortices.

Doubly connected V-states for the planar Euler equations

We prove existence of doubly connected V-states for the planar Euler equations which are not annuli. The proof proceeds by bifurcation from annuli at simple "eigenvalues". The bifurcated $V$-states we obtain enjoy a $m$-fold symmetry for some $m\ge 3.$ The existence of doubly connected $V$-states of strict $2$-fold symmetry remains open.

On the V-states for the generalized quasi-geostrophic equations

We prove the existence of the V-states for the generalized inviscid SQG equations with $α\in ]0,1[.$ These structures are special rotating simply connected patches with $m-$ fold symmetry bifurcating from the trivial solution at some explicit values of the angular velocity. This produces, inter alia, an infinite family of non stationary global solutions with uniqueness.

On the inviscid Boussinesq system with rough initial data

We deal with the local well-posedness theory for the two-dimensional inviscid Boussinesq system with rough initial data of Yudovich type. The problem is in some sense critical due to some terms involving Riesz transforms in the vorticity-density formulation. We give a positive answer for a special sub-class of Yudovich data including smooth and singular vortex patches. For the latter case we assume in addition that the initial density is constant around the singular part of the patch boundary.

On rotating doubly connected vortices

In this paper we consider rotating doubly connected vortex patches for the Euler equations in the plane. When the inner interface is an ellipse we show that the exterior interface must be a confocal ellipse. We then discuss some relations, first found by Flierl and Polvani, between the parameters of the ellipses, the velocity of rotation and the magnitude of the vorticity in the domain enclosed by the inner ellipse.
