Accelerating scaling solutions from dark matter particle creation

This article opens new window to obtain accelerating scaling attractors without any need of dark energy. We study cosmological dynamics in a two-fluid system where pressureless dark matter (DM) undergoes adiabatic particle creation and exchanges energy with a barotropic fluid. Considering six widely used interaction prescriptions, we formulate the corresponding autonomous systems in a compact phase space and perform a unified dynamical analysis. We find that accelerating scaling attractors, namely late-time states where both fluids coexist with fixed energy fractions, arise only when the interaction is controlled by the DM density and energy flows from DM to the second fluid. Such attractors appear in the global and local DM-based interactions, and in the global mixed case, but are entirely absent when the interaction depends on the second fluid or on local mixed terms, which instead drive the universe to a DM-dominated accelerating phase. These results clarify the unique conditions under which matter creation can mimic dark-energy-like behaviour without introducing a dark-energy component.

Phantom cosmology with arbitrary potential: New accelerating scaling attractors

In this article, we investigate the existence of accelerating scaling solutions in coupled phantom cosmology without assuming any specific potential for the phantom scalar field. The coupling between phantom dark energy and dark matter is motivated by the warm inflationary paradigm, with the dissipation coefficient assumed to be either constant or variable. The evolution equations are written in the form of autonomous systems, whose stability is studied using methods of qualitative analysis of dynamical systems. For this analysis, the only requirement imposed on the otherwise arbitrary phantom potential is that a particular dynamical variable, defined in terms of the potential and its derivative, must be invertible. For such a generic potential, we show that accelerated scaling solutions do exist, for both constant and variable dissipation coefficients. Although there is a limitation to these scaling solutions -- specifically, the current stage of accelerated expansion is not preceded by a long enough matter-dominated era -- our results show that the existence of a direct coupling between phantom dark energy and dark matter yields great potential for addressing the cosmic coincidence problem.

Matter Creation Cosmologies and Accelerated Expansion

Non-conservation of dark matter can lead to late-time cosmic acceleration. This mechanism is known as the matter creation theory and this replaces the need of dark energy and modified gravity theories. We consider a two-fluid system consisting of a cold dark matter and a second fluid with constant barotropic equation of state. We performed detailed investigations of such cosmologies using the powerful techniques of qualitative analysis of dynamical systems. Considering a wide variety of the creation rates, we examine the phase space analysis of the individual scenario. According to our analyses, these scenarios predict decelerating unstable dark matter (or second fluid) dominated critical points, accelerating attractors dominated either by dark matter or the second fluid, accelerating scaling attractors in which dark matter and the second fluid co-exist. The regime of late-time accelerating expansion can be classified as either quintessence, phantom or driven by a cosmological constant. This huge variety of critical points makes these scenarios phenomenologically rich, and naturally suggests that such scenarios can be viewed as viable and potential alternatives to the mainstream cosmological models.

Interacting phantom dark energy: new accelerating scaling attractors

We perform a detailed investigation of interacting phantom cosmology, by applying the powerful method of dynamical system analysis. We consider two well-studied interaction forms, namely one global and one local one, while the novel ingredient of our work is the examination of new potentials for the phantom field. Our analysis shows the existence of saddle matter-dominated points, stable dark-energy dominated points, and scaling accelerating solutions, that can attract the Universe at late times. As we show, some of the stable accelerating scaling attractors, in which dark matter and dark energy can co-exist, alleviating the cosmic coincidence problem, are totally new, even for the previously studied interaction rates, and arise purely from the novel potential forms.

Coupled phantom cosmological model motivated by the warm inflationary paradigm

In this article, we investigate a coupled phantom dark-energy cosmological model in which the coupling term between a phantom scalar field with an exponential potential and a pressureless dark-matter fluid is motivated by the warm inflationary paradigm. Using methods of qualitative analysis of dynamical systems, complemented by numerical solutions of the evolution equations, we study the late-time behavior of our model. We show that contrary to the uncoupled scenario, the coupled phantom model admits accelerated scaling solutions. However, they do not correspond to a final state of the universe's evolution and, therefore, cannot be used to solve the cosmological coincidence problem. Furthermore, we show that, for certain coupling parameter values, the total equation-of-state parameter's asymptotic behavior is significantly changed when compared to the uncoupled scenario, allowing for solutions less phantom even for steeper potentials of the phantom scalar field.

Blockchain-enabled Circular Economy -- Collaborative Responsibility in Solar Panel Recycling

The adoption of renewable energy resources, such as solar power, is on the rise. However, the excessive installation and lack of recycling facilities pose environmental risks. This paper suggests a circular economy approach to address the issue. By implementing blockchain technology, the end-of-life (EOL) of solar panels can be tracked, and responsibilities can be assigned to relevant stakeholders. The degradation of panels can be monetized by tracking users' energy-related activities, and these funds can be used for future recycling. A new coin, the recycling coin (RC-Coin), incentivizes solar panel recycling and utilizes decentralized finance to stabilize the coin price and supply issue.

Phase space analysis of sign-shifting interacting dark energy models

The theory of non-gravitational interaction between a pressure-less dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE) is a phenomenologically rich cosmological domain which has received magnificent attention in the community. In the present article we have considered some interacting scenarios with some novel features: the interaction functions do not depend on the external parameters of the universe, rather, they depend on the intrinsic nature of the dark components; the assumption of unidirectional flow of energy between DM and DE has been extended by allowing the possibility of bidirectional energy flow characterized by some sign shifting interaction functions; and the DE equation of state has been considered to be either constant or dynamical in nature. These altogether add new ingredients in this context, and, we performed the phase space analysis of each interacting scenario in order to understand their global behaviour. According to the existing records in the literature, this combined picture has not been reported elsewhere. From the analyses, we observed that the DE equation of state as well as the coupling parameter(s) of the interaction models can significantly affect the nature of the critical points. It has been found that within these proposed sign shifting interacting scenarios, it is possible to obtain stable late time attractors which may act as global attractors corresponding to an accelerating expansion of the universe. The overall outcomes of this study clearly highlight that the sign shifting interaction functions are quite appealing in the context of cosmological dynamics and they deserve further attention.

Normal form for singular Bautin bifurcation in a slow-fast system with Holling type III functional response

Over the last few decades, complex oscillations of slow-fast systems have been a key area of research. In the theory of slow-fast systems, the location of singular Hopf bifurcation and maximal canard is determined by computing the first Lyapunov coefficient. In particular, the analysis of canards is based on the genericity condition that the first Lyapunov coefficient must be non-zero. This manuscript aims to further extend the results to the case where the first Lyapunov coefficient vanishes. For that, the analytic expression of the second Lyapunov coefficient and the investigation of the normal form for codimension-2 singular Bautin bifurcation in a predator-prey system is done by explicitly identifying the locally invertible parameter-dependent transformations. A planar slow-fast predator-prey model with Holling type III functional response is considered here, where the prey population growth is affected by the weak Allee effect, and the prey reproduces much faster than the predator. Using geometric singular perturbation theory, normal form theory of slow-fast systems, and blow-up technique, we provide a detailed mathematical investigation of the system to show a variety of rich and complex nonlinear dynamics including but not limited to the existence of canards, relaxation oscillations, canard phenomena, singular Hopf bifurcation, and singular Bautin bifurcation. Additionally, numerical simulations are conducted to support the theoretical findings.

Unveiling the dynamics of canard cycles and global behaviour in a singularly perturbed predator-prey system with Allee effect in predator

In this article, we have considered a planar slow-fast modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey model with a weak Allee effect in the predator, based on the natural assumption that the prey reproduces far more quickly than the predator. We present a thorough mathematical analysis demonstrating the existence of homoclinic orbits, heteroclinic orbits, singular Hopf bifurcation, canard limit cycles, relaxation oscillations, the birth of canard explosion by combining the normal form theory of slow-fast systems, Fenichel's theorem and blow-up technique near non-hyperbolic point. We have obtained very rich dynamical phenomena of the model, including the saddle-node, Hopf, transcritical bifurcation, generalized Hopf, cusp point, homoclinic orbit, heteroclinic orbit, and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations. Moreover, we have investigated the global stability of the unique positive equilibrium, as well as bistability, which shows that the system can display either 'prey extinction', 'stable coexistence', or 'oscillating coexistence' depending on the initial population size and values of the system parameters. The theoretical findings are verified by numerical simulations.

Roles of Retailers in the Peer-to-Peer Electricity Market: A Single Retailer Perspective

Despite extensive research in the past five years and several successfully completed and on-going pilot projects, regulators are still reluctant to implement peer-to-peer trading at a large-scale in today's electricity market. The reason could partly be attributed to the perceived disadvantage of current market participants like retailers due to their exclusion from market participation - a fundamental property of decentralised peer-to-peer trading. As a consequence, recently, there has been growing pressure from energy service providers in favour of retailers' participation in peer-to-peer trading. However, the role of retailers in the peer-to-peer market is yet to be established as no existing study has challenged this fundamental circumspection of decentralized trading. In this context, this perspective takes the first step to discuss the feasibility of retailers' involvement in the peer-to-peer market. In doing so, we identify key characteristics of retail-based and peer-to-peer electricity markets and discuss our viewpoint on how to incorporate a single retailer in a peer-to-peer market without compromising the fundamental decision-making characteristics of both markets. Finally, we give an example of a hypothetical business model to demonstrate how a retailer can be a part of a peer-to-peer market with a promise of collective benefits for the participants.

Peer-to-Peer Energy Systems for Connected Communities: A Review of Recent Advances and Emerging Challenges

After a century of relative stability of the electricity industry, extensive deployment of distributed energy resources and recent advances in computation and communication technologies have changed the nature of how we consume, trade, and apply energy. The power system is facing a transition from its traditional hierarchical structure to a more deregulated model by introducing new energy distribution models such as peer-to-peer sharing for connected communities. The proven effectiveness of P2P sharing in benefiting both prosumers and the grid has been demonstrated in many studies and pilot projects. However, there is still no extensive implementation of such sharing models in today's electricity markets. This paper aims to shed some light on this gap through a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the P2P energy system and an insightful discussion of the challenges that need to be addressed in order to establish P2P sharing as a viable energy management option in today's electricity market. To this end, in this article, we provide some background on different aspects of P2P sharing. Then, we discuss advances in P2P sharing through a systematic domain-based classification. We also review different pilot projects on P2P sharing across the globe. Finally, we identify and discuss a number of challenges that need to be addressed for scaling up P2P sharing in the electricity market followed by concluding remarks at the end of the paper.

Transforming Energy Networks via Peer to Peer Energy Trading: Potential of Game Theoretic Approaches

Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading has emerged as a next-generation energy management mechanism for the smart grid that enables each prosumer of the network to participate in energy trading with one another and the grid. This poses a significant challenge in terms of modeling the decision-making process of each participant with conflicting interest and motivating prosumers to participate in energy trading and to cooperate, if necessary, for achieving different energy management goals. Therefore, such decision-making process needs to be built on solid mathematical and signal processing tools that can ensure an efficient operation of the smart grid. This paper provides an overview of the use of game theoretic approaches for P2P energy trading as a feasible and effective means of energy management. As such, we discuss various games and auction theoretic approaches by following a systematic classification to provide information on the importance of game theory for smart energy research. Then, the paper focuses on the P2P energy trading describing its key features and giving an introduction to an existing P2P testbed. Further, the paper zooms into the detail of some specific game and auction theoretic models that have recently been used in P2P energy trading and discusses some important finding of these schemes.
