Wigner type laws for structured random matrices

For a sufficiently nice 2 dimensional shape, we define its approximating matrix (or patterned matrix) as a random matrix with iid entries arranged according to a given pattern. For large approximating matrices, we observe that the eigenvalues roughly follow an underlying distribution. This phenomenon is similar to the classical observation on Wigner matrices. We prove that the moments of such matrices converge asymptotically as the size increases and equals to the integral of a combinatorially-defined function which counts certain paths on a finite grid. We also consider the case of several independent patterned matrices. Under a specific set of conditions, these matrices admit asymptotic freeness with respect to full-filled independent square random matrices. In our conclusion, we present several open problems.

Macroscale behavior of random lower triangular matrices

We analyze the macroscale behavior of random lower (and therefore upper) triangular matrices with entries drawn iid from a distribution with nonzero mean and finite variance. We show that such a matrix behaves like a probabilistic version of a Riemann sum and therefore in the limit behaves like the Volterra operator. Specifically, we analyze certain SOT-like and WOT-like modes of convergence for random lower triangular matrices to a scaled Volterra operator. We close with a brief discussion of moments.

A New Proof of Nakazi Theorem

We give a new proof of an important theorem by Nakazi using recent results by Sarason in his seminal paper on agebraic properties of truncated Toeplitz operators.

The Agler-Young Class

This note introduces a special class of tuples of bounded operators on a Hilbert space. It is called the Agler Young class. Major results about this class include a Wold decomposition and a dilation theorem. The structure of the dilation is completely spelt out. A characterization of this class using the hereditary functional calculus of Agler is obtained and examples are discussed. Toeplitz operators play a major role in this note. An Agler-Young pair arising from a truncated Toeplitz operator is characterized. Thus, we extend results obtained in the case of commuting operators by several authors over many decades to the non-commutative situation. The results for the commuting case can be recovered as special cases.
