Collective dynamics of vortices in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We have calculated collective mode spectra for three-dimensional, rotating Bose-Einstein condensates in oblate harmonic traps using the microscopic Bogoliubov-deGennes field theory. For condensates with $N_v$ vortices, $N_v$ Kelvin-Tkachenko mode branches are obtained. The features of these modes are compared with those predicted by a classical point vortex model. We have created movies to visualize the motion of the vortices corresponding to the Kelvin-Tkachenko waves.

Multi-Gaussian modes of diffusion in a quenched random medium

We have studied a model of a random walk in a quenched random environment. In addition to featuring anomalous diffusion and localization, for special regimes of disorder parameters the particle density decomposes into multi-Gaussian structure while its cumulative distribution is normal. We explain the observed fine structure of the density and point out its significance to experiments.

Deterministic Walks in Quenched Random Environments of Chaotic Maps

This paper concerns the propagation of particles through a quenched random medium. In the one- and two-dimensional models considered, the local dynamics is given by expanding circle maps and hyperbolic toral automorphisms, respectively. The particle motion in both models is chaotic and found to fluctuate about a linear drift. In the proper scaling limit, the cumulative distribution function of the fluctuations converges to a Gaussian one with system dependent variance while the density function shows no convergence to any function. We have verified our analytical results using extreme precision numerical computations.
