Geodesics in Information Geometry : Classical and Quantum Phase Transitions

We study geodesics on the parameter manifold, for systems exhibiting second order classical and quantum phase transitions. The coupled non-linear geodesic equations are solved numerically for a variety of models which show such phase transitions, in the thermodynamic limit. It is established that both in the classical as well as in the quantum case, geodesics are confined to a single phase, and exhibit turning behavior near critical points. Our results are indicative of a geometric universality in widely different physical systems.

Information Geometry and Quantum Phase Transitions in the Dicke Model

We study information geometry of the Dicke model, in the thermodynamic limit. The scalar curvature $R$ of the Riemannian metric tensor induced on the parameter space of the model is calculated. We analyze this both with and without the rotating wave approximation, and show that the parameter manifold is smooth even at the phase transition, and that the scalar curvature is continuous across the phase boundary.

Geodesic Congruences and Their Deformations in Bertrand Space-times

We study the energy conditions and geodesic deformations in Bertrand space-times. We show that these can be thought of as interesting physical space-times in certain regions of the underlying parameter space, where the weak and strong energy conditions hold. We further compute the ESR parameters and analyze them numerically. The focusing of radial time-like and radial null geodesics is shown explicitly, which verifies the Raychaudhuri equation.

Directed Random Walks on Colored, Periodic Lattices: A Gauge Theoretic Approach

We define a random walk problem which admits analytic results, on a class of infinite periodic lattices which are directed and colored. Our approach is motivated from the fact that such lattices arise in string theoretic constructs of certain gauge theories. An operator counting problem in the latter is mapped to a problem in random walks. This is illustrated with several examples.

Information Geometry, Phase Transitions, and Widom Lines : Magnetic and Liquid Systems

We study information geometry of the thermodynamics of first and second order phase transitions, and beyond criticality, in magnetic and liquid systems. We establish a universal microscopic characterization of such phase transitions via the equality of correlation lengths $ξ$ in coexisting phases, where $ξ$ is related to the scalar curvature of the equilibrium thermodynamic state space. The 1-D Ising model, and the mean-field Curie-Weiss model are discussed, and we show that information geometry correctly describes the phase behavior for the latter. The Widom lines for these systems are also established. We further study a simple model for the thermodynamics of liquid-liquid phase co-existence, and show that our method provides a simple and direct way to obtain its phase behavior and the locations of the Widom lines. Our analysis points towards multiple Widom lines in liquid systems.

Thermodynamic Geometry, Phase Transitions, and the Widom Line

We construct a novel approach, based on thermodynamic geometry, to characterize first-order phase transitions from a microscopic perspective, through the scalar curvature in the equilibrium thermodynamic state space. Our method resolves key theoretical issues in macroscopic thermodynamic constructs, and furthermore characterizes the Widom line through the maxima of the correlation length, which is captured by the thermodynamic scalar curvature. As an illustration of our method, we use it in conjunction with the mean field Van der Waals equation of state to predict the coexistence curve and the Widom line. Where closely applicable, it provides excellent agreement with experimental data. The universality of our method is indicated by direct calculations from the NIST database.

On the Higgsing and UnHiggsing of Fano 3-Folds

We study the Higgsing and UnHiggsing of M2-brane theories that probe cones over smooth toric Fano 3-folds, via brane tilings. We find many new examples of M2-brane gauge theories not studied previously in the literature, including those that do not correspond to cones over Fano varieties. Our analysis also provides, upon unHiggsing the known Fano varieties, new examples of quiver gauge theories that describe the same toric variety, but with external point multiplicities. As a byproduct of our results, we discuss an example of a CY 4-fold that does not have a tiling description, and study the Higgsing of this theory.

On Black Hole Entropy Corrections in the Grand Canonical Ensemble

We study entropy corrections due to thermal fluctuations for asymptotically AdS black holes in the grand canonical ensemble. To leading order, these can be expressed in terms of the black hole response coefficients via fluctuation moments. We also analyze entropy corrections due to mass and charge fluctuations of R-charged black holes, and our results indicate an universality in the logarithmic corrections to charged AdS black hole entropy in various dimensions.

On The Phase Structure and Thermodynamic Geometry of R-Charged Black Holes

We study the phase structure and equilibrium state space geometry of R-charged black holes in $D = 5$, 4 and 7 and the corresponding rotating $D3$, $M2$ and $M5$ branes. For various charge configurations of the compact black holes in the canonical ensemble we demonstrate new liquid-gas like phase coexistence behaviour culminating in second order critical points. The critical exponents turn out to be the same as that of four dimensional asymptotically AdS black holes in Einstein Maxwell theory. We further establish that the regions of stability for R-charged black holes are, in some cases, more constrained than is currently believed, due to properties of some of the response coefficients. The equilibrium state space scalar curvature is calculated for various charge configurations, both for the case of compact as well as flat horizons and its asymptotic behaviour with temperature is established.

On the Thermodynamic Geometry and Critical Phenomena of AdS Black Holes

In this paper, we study various aspects of the equilibrium thermodynamic state space geometry of AdS black holes. We first examine the Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS (RN-AdS) and the Kerr-AdS black holes. In this context, the state space scalar curvature of these black holes is analysed in various regions of their thermodynamic parameter space. This provides important new insights into the structure and significance of the scalar curvature. We further investigate critical phenomena, and the behaviour of the scalar curvature near criticality, for KN-AdS black holes in two mixed ensembles, introduced and elucidated in our earlier work arXiv:1002.2538 [hep-th]. The critical exponents are identical to those in the RN-AdS and Kerr-AdS cases in the canonical ensemble. This suggests an universality in the scaling behaviour near critical points of AdS black holes. Our results further highlight qualitative differences in the thermodynamic state space geometry for electric charge and angular momentum fluctuations of these.

Thermodynamic Geometry and Phase Transitions in Kerr-Newman-AdS Black Holes

We investigate phase transitions and critical phenomena in Kerr-Newman-Anti de Sitter black holes in the framework of the geometry of their equilibrium thermodynamic state space. The scalar curvature of these state space Riemannian geometries is computed in various ensembles. The scalar curvature diverges at the critical point of second order phase transitions for these systems. Remarkably, however, we show that the state space scalar curvature also carries information about the liquid-gas like first order phase transitions and the consequent instabilities and phase coexistence for these black holes. This is encoded in the turning point behavior and the multi-valued branched structure of the scalar curvature in the neighborhood of these first order phase transitions. We re-examine this first for the conventional Van der Waals system, as a preliminary exercise. Subsequently, we study the Kerr-Newman-AdS black holes for a grand canonical and two "mixed" ensembles and establish novel phase structures. The state space scalar curvature bears out our assertion for the first order phase transitions for both the known and the new phase structures, and closely resembles the Van der Waals system.

Thermodynamic Geometry and Extremal Black Holes in String Theory

We study a generalisation of thermodynamic geometry to degenerate quantum ground states at zero temperatures exemplified by charged extremal black holes in type II string theories. Several examples of extremal charged black holes with non degenerate thermodynamic geometries and finite but non zero state space scalar curvatures are established. These include black holes described by D1-D5-P and D2-D6-NS5-P brane systems and also two charged small black holes in Type II string theories. We also explore the modifications to the state space geometry and the scalar curvature due to the higher derivative contributions and string loop corrections as well as an exact entropy expression from quantum information theory. Our construction describes state space geometries arising out of a possible limiting thermodynamic characterisation of degenerate quantum ground states at zero temperatures.

A Note on Dimer Models and D-brane Gauge Theories

The connection between quiver gauge theories and dimer models has been well studied. It is known that the matter fields of the quiver gauge theories can be represented using the perfect matchings of the corresponding dimer model. We conjecture that a subset of perfect matchings associated with an internal point in the toric diagram is sufficient to give information about the charge matrix of the quiver gauge theory. Further, we perform explicit computations on some aspects of partial resolutions of toric singularities using dimer models. We analyse these with graph theory techniques, using the perfect matchings of orbifolds of the form $\BC^3/Γ$, where the orbifolding group $Γ$ may be noncyclic. Using these, we study the construction of the superpotential of gauge theories living on D-branes which probe these singularities, including the case where one or more adjoint fields are present upon partial resolution. Applying a combination of open and closed string techniques to dimer models, we also study some aspects of their symmetries.

On Phases of Generic Toric Singularities

We systematically study the phases of generic toric singularities, using methods initiated in hep-th/0612046. These correspond to Gauged Linear Sigma Models with arbitrary charges. We show that complete information about generic $U(1)^r$ GLSMs can be obtained by studying the GLSM Lagrangian, appropriately modified in the different phases of the theory. This can be used to study the different phases of $L^{a,b,c}$ spaces and their non-supersymmetric counterparts.

On Dimer Models and Closed String Theories

We study some aspects of the recently discovered connection between dimer models and D-brane gauge theories. We argue that dimer models are also naturally related to closed string theories on non compact orbifolds of $\BC^2$ and $\BC^3$, via their twisted sector R charges, and show that perfect matchings in dimer models correspond to twisted sector states in the closed string theory. We also use this formalism to study the combinatorics of some unstable orbifolds of $\BC^2$.

On Tachyons in Generic Orbifolds of $\BC^r$ and Gauged Linear Sigma Models

We study some aspects of Gauged Linear Sigma Models corresponding to orbifold singularities of the form $\BC^r/Γ$, for $r=2,3$ and $Γ= \BZ_n$ and $\BZ_n\times \BZ_m$. These orbifolds might be tachyonic in general. We compute expressions for the multi parameter sigma model Lagrangians for these orbifolds, in terms of their toric geometry data. Using this, we analyze some aspects of the phases of generic orbifolds of $\BC^r$.

On the Thermodynamic Geometry of BTZ Black Holes

We investigate the Ruppeiner geometry of the thermodynamic state space of a general class of BTZ black holes. It is shown that the thermodynamic geometry is flat for both the rotating BTZ and the BTZ Chern Simons black holes in the canonical ensemble. We further investigate the inclusion of thermal fluctuations to the canonical entropy of the BTZ Chern Simons black holes and show that the leading logartithmic correction due to Carlip is reproduced. We establish that the inclusion of thermal fluctuations induces a non zero scalar curvature to the thermodynamic geometry.

On Localized Tachyon Condensation in $\BC^2/\BZ_n$ and $\BC^3/\BZ_n$

We study some aspects of localized tachyon condensation on non-supersymmetric orbifolds of the form $\BC^2/\BZ_n$ and $\BC^3/\BZ_n$. We discuss the gauged linear sigma models for these orbifolds. We show how several features of the decay of orbifolds of $\BC^3$ can be realised in terms of orbifolds of $\BC^2$.
