Banach actions preserving unconditional convergence

Let $A,X,Y$ be Banach spaces and $A\times X\to Y$, $(a,x)\mapsto ax$, be a continuous bilinear function, called a *Banach action*. We say that this action *preserves unconditional convergence* if for every bounded sequence $(a_n)_{n\inω}$ in $A$ and unconditionally convergent series $\sum_{n\inω}x_n$ in $X$ the series $\sum_{n\inω}a_nx_n$ is unconditionally convergent. We prove that a Banach action $A\times X\to Y$ preserves unconditional convergence if and only if for any linear functional $y^*\in Y^*$ the operator $D_{y^*}:X\to A^*$, $D_{y^*}(x)(a)=y^*(ax)$, is absolutely summing. Combining this characterization with the famous Grothendieck theorem on the absolute summability of operators from $\ell_1$ to $\ell_2$, we prove that a Banach action $A\times X\to Y$ preserves unconditional convergence if $A$ is a Hilbert space possessing an orthonormal basis $(e_n)_{n\inω}$ such that for every $x\in X$ the series $\sum_{n\inω}e_nx$ is weakly absolutely convergent. Applying known results of Garling on the absolute summability of diagonal operators between sequence spaces, we prove that for (finite or infinite) numbers $p,q,r\in[1,\infty]$ with $\frac1r\le\frac1p+\frac1q$, the coordinatewise multplication $\ell_p\times\ell_q\to\ell_r$ preserves unconditional convergence if and only if one of the following conditions holds: (i) $p\le 2$ and $q\le r$, (ii) $2<p<q\le r$, (iii) $2<p=q<r$, (iv) $r=\infty$, (v) $2\le q<p\le r$, (vi) $q<2<p$ and $\frac1p+\frac1q\ge\frac1r+\frac12$.

On unconditionally convergent series in topological rings

We define a topological ring $R$ to be \emph{Hirsch}, if for any unconditionally convergent series $\sum_{n\inω} x_i$ in $R$ and any neighborhood $U$ of the additive identity $0$ of $R$ there exists a neighborhood $V\subseteq R$ of $0$ such that $\sum_{n\in F} a_n x_n\in U$ for any finite set $F\subsetω$ and any sequence $(a_n)_{n\in F}\in V^F$. We recognize Hirsch rings in certain known classes of topological rings. For this purpose we introduce and develop the technique of seminorms on actogroups. We prove, in particular, that a topological ring $R$ is Hirsch provided $R$ is locally compact or $R$ has a base at the zero consisting of open ideals or $R$ is a closed subring of the Banach ring $C(K)$, where $K$ is a compact Hausdorff space. This implies that the Banach ring $\ell_\infty$ and its subrings $c_0$ and $c$ are Hirsch. Also we prove that for every $p\in[1,2]$ the Banach ring $\ell_p$ is Hirsch. On the other hand, for any distinct numbers $p,q\in[1,\infty]$ the commutative Banach ring $\ell_p\oplus i\ell_q$ is not Hirsch. Also for any $p\in (1,\infty)$, the (noncommutative) Banach ring $L(\ell_p)$ of continuous endomorphisms of the Banach ring $\ell_p$ is not Hirsch. We do not know whether the Banach rings $\ell_p$ are Hirsch for $p\in(2,\infty)$.

Gurarii operators are generic

Answering a question of Garbulińska-Wȩgrzyn and Kubiś, we prove that Gurarii operators form a dense $G_δ$-set in the space $\mathcal B(\mathbb G)$ of all nonexpansive operators on the Gurarii space $\mathbb G$, endowed with the strong operator topology. This implies that the set of universal operators on $\mathbb G$ form a residual set in $\mathcal B(\mathbb G)$.

The Josefson--Nissenzweig property for locally convex spaces

We define a locally convex space $E$ to have the $Josefson$-$Nissenzweig$ $property$ (JNP) if the identity map $(E',σ(E',E))\to ( E',β^\ast(E',E))$ is not sequentially continuous. By the classical Josefson-Nissenzweig theorem, every infinite-dimensional Banach space has the JNP. A characterization of locally convex spaces with the JNP is given. We thoroughly study the JNP in various function spaces. Among other results we show that for a Tychonoff space $X$, the function space $C_p(X)$ has the JNP iff there is a weak$^\ast$ null-sequence $(μ_n)_{n\inω}$ of finitely supported sign-measures on $X$ with unit norm. However, for every Tychonoff space $X$, neither the space $B_1(X)$ of Baire-1 functions on $X$ nor the free locally convex space $L(X)$ over $X$ has the JNP.

The Gelfand-Phillips property for locally convex spaces

We extend the well-known Gelfand-Phillips property for Banach spaces to locally convex spaces, defining a locally convex space $E$ to be Gelfand-Phillips if every limited set in $E$ is precompact in the topology on $E$ defined by barrels. Several characterizations of Gelfand-Phillips spaces are given. The problem of preservation of the Gelfand-Phillips property by standard operations over locally convex spaces is considered. Also we explore the Gelfand-Phillips property in spaces $C(X)$ of continuous functions on a Tychonoff space $X$. If $τ$ and $\mathcal T$ are two locally convex topologies on $C(X)$ such that $\mathcal T_p\subseteq τ\subseteq \mathcal T\subseteq \mathcal T_k$, where $\mathcal T_p$ is the topology of pointwise convergence and $\mathcal T_k$ is the compact-open topology on $C(X)$, then the Gelfand--Phillips property of the function space $(C(X),τ)$ implies the Gelfand--Phillips property of $(C(X),\mathcal T)$. If additionally $X$ is metrizable, then the function space $\big(C(X),\mathcal T\big)$ is Gelfand--Phillips.

Locally convex spaces with the strong Gelfand-Phillips property

We introduce the strong Gelfand-Phillips property for locally convex spaces and give several characterizations of this property. We characterize the strong Gelfand-Phillips property among locally convex spaces admitting a stronger Banach space topology. If $C_{\mathcal T}(X)$ is a space of continuous functions on a Tychonoff space $X$, endowed with a locally convex topology $\mathcal T$ between the pointwise topology and the compact-open topology, then: (a) the space $C_{\mathcal T}(X)$ has the strong Gelfand-Phillips property iff $X$ contains a compact countable subspace $K\subseteq X$ of finite scattered height such that for every functionally bounded set $B\subseteq X$ the complement $B\setminus K$ is finite, (b) the subspace $C^b_{\mathcal T}(X)$ of $C_{\mathcal T}(X)$ consisting of all bounded functions on $X$ has the strong Gelfand-Phillips property iff $X$ is a compact countable space of finite scattered height.

Set-Theoretical Problems in Asymptology

In this paper we collect some open set-theoretic problems that appear in the large-scale topology (called also Asymptology). In particular we ask problems about critical cardinalities of some special (large, indiscrete, inseparated) coarse structures on $ω$, about the interplay between properties of a coarse space and its Higson corona, about some special ultrafilters ($T$-points and cellular $T$-points) related to finitary coarse structures on $ω$, about partitions of coarse spaces into thin pieces, and also about coarse groups having some extremal properties.

Characterizing chain-compact and chain-finite topological semilattices

In the paper we present various characterizations of chain-compact and chain-finite topological semilattices. A topological semilattice $X$ is called chain-compact (resp. chain-finite) if each closed chain in $X$ is compact (finite). In particular, we prove that a (Hausdorff) $T_1$-topological semilattice $X$ is chain-finite (chain-compact) if and only if for any closed subsemilattice $Z\subset X$ and any continuous homomorphism $h:X\to Y$ to a (Hausdorff) $T_1$-topological semilattice $Y$ the image $h(X)$ is closed in $Y$.

Characterizing categorically closed commutative semigroups

Let $\mathcal C$ be a class of Hausdorff topological semigroups which contains all zero-dimensional Hausdorff topological semigroups. A semigroup $X$ is called $\mathcal C$-$closed$ if $X$ is closed in each topological semigroup $Y\in \mathcal C$ containing $X$ as a discrete subsemigroup; $X$ is $projectively$ $\mathcal C$-$closed$ if for each congruence $\approx$ on $X$ the quotient semigroup $X/_\approx$ is $\mathcal C$-closed. A semigroup $X$ is called $chain$-$finite$ if for any infinite set $I\subseteq X$ there are elements $x,y\in I$ such that $xy\notin\{x,y\}$. We prove that a semigroup $X$ is $\mathcal C$-closed if it admits a homomorphism $h:X\to E$ to a chain-finite semilattice $E$ such that for every $e\in E$ the semigroup $h^{-1}(e)$ is $\mathcal C$-closed. Applying this theorem, we prove that a commutative semigroup $X$ is $\mathcal C$-closed if and only if $X$ is periodic, chain-finite, all subgroups of $X$ are bounded, and for any infinite set $A\subseteq X$ the product $AA$ is not a singleton. A commutative semigroup $X$ is projectively $\mathcal C$-closed if and only if $X$ is chain-finite, all subgroups of $X$ are bounded and the union $H(X)$ of all subgroups in $X$ has finite complement $X\setminus H(X)$.

The interplay between weak topologies on topological semilattices

We study the interplay between three weak topologies on a topological semilattice $X$: the weak$^\circ$ topology $\mathcal W^\circ_X$ (generated by the base consiting of open subsemilattices of $X$), the weak$^\bullet$ topology $\mathcal W^\bullet_X$ (generated by the subbase consisting of complements to closed subsemilattices), and the $\mathbb I$-weak topology $\mathcal W_X$ (which is the weakest topology in which all continuous homomorphisms $h:X\to [0,1]$ remain continuous). Also we study the interplay between the weak topologies $\mathcal W^\bullet_X$, $\mathcal W^\circ_X$, $\mathcal W_X$ of a topological semilattice $X$ and the Scott and Lawson topologies $\mathcal S_X$ and $\mathcal L_X$, which are determined by the order structure of the semilattice. We prove that the weak$^\bullet$ topology $\mathcal W^\bullet$ on a Hausdorff semitopological semilattice $X$ is compact if and only if $X$ is chain-compact in the sense that each closed chain in $X$ is compact. This result implies that the Lawson topology $\mathcal L_X$ on a semilattice $X$ is compact if and only if $X$ is a continuous semilattice if and only if $X$ complete in the sense that each non-empty chain $C$ in $X$ has $\inf(C)$ and $\sup(C)$ in $X$. For a chain-compact Hausdorff topological semilattice $X$ with topology $\mathcal T_X$ we prove the inclusions $\mathcal W_X\subset\mathcal L_X\subset\mathcal W^\bullet_X\subset\mathcal T_X$. For a compact topological semilattice $X$ we prove that $\mathcal T_X=\mathcal W^\bullet_X$ if and only if $\mathcal T_X=\mathcal L_X$ if and only if $\mathcal T_X=\mathcal L_X$.

A simple Efimov space with sequentially-nice space of probability measures

Under Jensen's diamond principle $\diamondsuit$, we construct a simple Efimov space $K$ whose space of nonatomic probability measures $P_{na}(K)$ is first-countable and sequentially compact. These two properties of $P_{na}(K)$ imply that the space of probability measures $P(K)$ on $K$ is selectively sequentially pseudocompact and the Banach space $C(K)$ of continuous functions on $K$ has the Gelfand-Phillips property. We show also that any sequence of probability measures on $K$ that converges to an atomic measure converges in norm, and any sequence of probability measures on $K$ converging to zero in sup-norm has a subsequence converging to a nonatomic probability measure.

Small uncountable cardinals in large-scale topology

In this paper we are interested in finding and evaluating cardinal characteristics of the continuum that appear in large-scale topology, usually as the smallest weights of coarse structures that belong to certain classes (indiscrete, inseparated, large) of finitary or locally finite coarse structures on $ω$. Besides well-known cardinals $\mathfrak b,\mathfrak d,\mathfrak c$ we shall encounter two new cardinals $\mathsf Δ$ and $\mathsf Σ$, defined as the smallest weight of a finitary coarse structure on $ω$ which contains no discrete subspaces and no asymptotically separated sets, respectively. We prove that $\max\{\mathfrak b,\mathfrak s,\mathrm{cov}(\mathcal N)\}\le\mathsf Δ\le\mathsf Σ\le\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M)$, but we do not know if the cardinals $\mathsf Δ,\mathsf Σ,\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M)$ can be separated in suitable models of ZFC.

Banach spaces with the (strong) Gelfand--Phillips property

Several new characterizations of the Gelfand-Phillips property are given. We define a strong version of the Gelfand-Phillips property and prove that a Banach space has this stronger property iff it embeds into $c_0$. For an infinite compact space $K$, the Banach space $C(K)$ has the strong Gelfand-Phillips property iff $C(K)$ is isomorphic to $c_0$ iff $K$ is countable and has finite scattered height.

On pseudobounded and premeager paratopological groups

Let $G$ be a paratopological group. Following F. Lin and S. Lin, we say that the group $G$ is pseudobounded, if for any neighborhood $U$ of the identity of $G$, there exists a natural number $n$ such that $U^n=G$. The group $G$ is $ω$-pseudobounded, if for any neighborhood $U$ of the identity of $G$, the group $G$ is a union of sets $U^n$, where $n$ is a natural number. The group $G$ is premeager, if $G\ne N^n$ for any nowhere dense subset $N$ of $G$ and any positive integer $n$. In this paper we investigate relations between the above classes of groups and answer some questions posed by F. Lin, S. Lin, and Sánchez.

$G$-deviations of polygons and their applications in Electric Power Engineering

For any metric space $X$ endowed with the action of a group $G$, and two $n$-gons $\vec x=(x_1,\dots,x_n)\in X^n$ and $\vec y=(y_1,\dots,y_n)\in X^n$ in $X$, we introduce the $G$-deviation $d(G\vec x,\vec y\,)$ of $\vec x$ from $\vec y$ as the distance in $X^n$ from $\vec y$ to the $G$-orbit $G\vec x$ of $\vec x$ in the $n$-th power $X^n$ of $X$. For some groups $G$ of affine transformations of the complex plane, we deduce simple-to-apply formulas for calculating the $G$-derviation between $n$-gons on the complex plane. We apply these formulas for defining new measures of asymmetry of triangles. These new measures can be applied in Electric Power Engineering for evaluating the quality of 3-phase electric power. One of such measures, namely the affine deviation, is espressible via the unbalance degree, which is a standard characteristic of quality of three-phase electric power.

Hyperspaces of countable compacta

Hyperspaces $\mathcal H(X)$ of all countable compact subsets of a metric space $X$ and $\mathcal A_n(X)$ of infinite compact subsets which have at most $n$ ($n\in\mathbb N$), or finitely many ($n=ω$) or countably many ($n=ω+1$) accumulation points are studied. By descriptive set-theoretical methods, we fully characterize them for 0-dimensional, dense-in-itself, Polish spaces and partially for $σ$-compact spaces $X$. Using the theory of absorbing sets, we get characterizations of $\mathcal H(X)$, $\mathcal A_ω(X)$ and $\mathcal A_{ω+1}(X)$ for nondegenerate connected, locally connected Polish spaces $X$ which are either locally compact or nowhere locally compact. For every $n\in\mathbb N$, we show that if $X$ is an interval or a simple closed curve, $\mathcal A_n(X)$ is homeomorphic to the linear space $c_{0}=\{(x_{i}) \in\mathbb R^ω: \lim x_{i}=0\}$ with the product topology; if $X$ is a Peano continuum and a point $p\in X$ is of order $\ge 2$, then the hyperspace $\mathcal A_1(X,\{p\})$ of all compacta with exactly one accumulation point $p$ also is homeomorphic to $c_{0}$.

Semitopological modules

Given a topological ring $R$, we study semitopological $R$-modules, construct their completions, Bohr and borno modifications. For every topological space $X$, we construct the free (semi)topological $R$-module over $X$ and prove that for a $k$-space $X$ its free semitopological $R$-module is a topological $R$-module. Also we construct a Tychonoff space $X$ whose free semitopological $R$-module is not a topological $R$-module.
