Extracting partition function zeros from Fukui-Todo simulations

The Fukui-Todo algorithm is an important element of the array of simulational approaches to tackling critical phenomena in statistical physics. The partition-function-zero approach is of fundamental importance to understanding such phenomena and a precise tool to measure their properties. However, because the Fukui-Todo algorithm bypasses sample-by-sample energy computation, zeros cannot easily be harnessed through the energy distribution. Here this obstacle is overcome by a novel reweighting technique and zero-detection protocol. The efficacy of the approach is demonstrated in simple iconic models which feature transitions of both first and second order.

Optimized GPU simulation of continuous-spin glass models

We develop a highly optimized code for simulating the Edwards-Anderson Heisenberg model on graphics processing units (GPUs). Using a number of computational tricks such as tiling, data compression and appropriate memory layouts, the simulation code combining over-relaxation, heat bath and parallel tempering moves achieves a peak performance of 0.29 ns per spin update on realistic system sizes, corresponding to a more than 150 fold speed-up over a serial CPU reference implementation. The optimized implementation is used to study the spin-glass transition in a random external magnetic field to probe the existence of a de Almeida-Thouless line in the model, for which we give benchmark results.

GPU accelerated Monte Carlo simulations of lattice spin models

We consider Monte Carlo simulations of classical spin models of statistical mechanics using the massively parallel architecture provided by graphics processing units (GPUs). We discuss simulations of models with discrete and continuous variables, and using an array of algorithms ranging from single-spin flip Metropolis updates over cluster algorithms to multicanonical and Wang-Landau techniques to judge the scope and limitations of GPU accelerated computation in this field. For most simulations discussed, we find significant speed-ups by two to three orders of magnitude as compared to single-threaded CPU implementations.

Dy2Ti2O7 Spin Ice: a Test Case for Emergent Clusters in a Frustrated Magnet

Dy2Ti2O7 is a geometrically frustrated magnetic material with a strongly correlated spin ice regime that extends from 1 K down to as low as 60 mK. The diffuse elastic neutron scattering intensities in the spin ice regime can be remarkably well described by a phenomenological model of weakly interacting hexagonal spin clusters, as invoked in other geometrically frustrated magnets. We present a highly refined microscopic theory of Dy2Ti2O7 that includes long-range dipolar and exchange interactions to third nearest neighbors and which demonstrates that the clusters are purely fictitious in this material. The seeming emergence of composite spin clusters and their associated scattering pattern is instead an indicator of fine-tuning of ancillary correlations within a strongly correlated state.

Spin Hamiltonian, Competing Small Energy Scales and Incommensurate Long Range Order in the Highly Frustrated Gd3Ga5O12 Garnet Antiferromagnet

Despite the availability of a spin Hamiltonian for the Gd3Ga5O12 garnet (GGG) for over twenty five years, there has so far been little theoretical insight regarding the many unusual low temperature properties of GGG. Here we investigate GGG in zero magnetic field using mean-field theory. We reproduce the spin liquid-like correlations and, most importantly, explain the positions of the sharp peaks seen in powder neutron diffraction experiments. We show that it is crucial to treat accurately the long-range nature of the magnetic dipolar interactions to allow for a determination of the small exchange energy scales involved in the selection of the experimental ordering wave vector. Our results show that the incommensurate order in GGG is classical in nature, intrinsic to the microscopic spin Hamiltonian and not caused by weak disorder.

Ill-Behaved Convergence of a Model of the Gd3Ga5O12 Garnet Antiferromagnet with Truncated Magnetic Dipole-Dipole Interactions

Previous studies have found that calculations which consider long-range magnetic dipolar interactions truncated at a finite cut-off distance Rc predict spurious (unphysical) long-range ordered phases for Ising and Heisenberg systems on the pyrochlore lattice. In this paper we show that, similar to these two cases, calculations that use truncated dipolar interactions to model the Gd3Ga5O12 garnet antiferromagnet also predict unphysical phases with incommensurate ordering wave vector q_ord that is very sensitive to the dipolar cut-off distance Rc.
