An energy efficient service composition mechanism using a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm in a mobile cloud environment

By increasing mobile devices in technology and human life, using a runtime and mobile services has gotten more complex along with the composition of a large number of atomic services. Different services are provided by mobile cloud components to represent the non-functional properties as Quality of Service (QoS), which is applied by a set of standards. On the other hand, the growth of the energy-source heterogeneity in mobile clouds is an emerging challenge according to the energy-saving problem in mobile nodes. To mobile cloud service composition as an NP-Hard problem, an efficient selection method should be taken by problem using optimal energy-aware methods that can extend the deployment and interoperability of mobile cloud components. Also, an energy-aware service composition mechanism is required to preserve high energy saving scenarios for mobile cloud components. In this paper, an energy-aware mechanism is applied to optimize mobile cloud service composition using a hybrid Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm and Genetic Algorithm (SFGA). Experimental results capture that the proposed mechanism improves the feasibility of the service composition with minimum energy consumption, response time, and cost for mobile cloud components against some current algorithms.

A Novel Hybrid GWO with WOA for Global Numerical Optimization and Solving Pressure Vessel Design

A recent metaheuristic algorithm, such as Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), was proposed. The idea of proposing this algorithm belongs to the hunting behavior of the humpback whale. However, WOA suffers from poor performance in the exploitation phase and stagnates in the local best solution. Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) is a very competitive algorithm comparing to other common metaheuristic algorithms as it has a super performance in the exploitation phase while it is tested on unimodal benchmark functions. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to hybridize GWO with WOA to overcome the problems. GWO can perform well in exploiting optimal solutions. In this paper, a hybridized WOA with GWO which is called WOAGWO is presented. The proposed hybridized model consists of two steps. Firstly, the hunting mechanism of GWO is embedded into the WOA exploitation phase with a new condition which is related to GWO. Secondly, a new technique is added to the exploration phase to improve the solution after each iteration. Experimentations are tested on three different standard test functions which are called benchmark functions: 23 common functions, 25 CEC2005 functions and 10 CEC2019 functions. The proposed WOAGWO is also evaluated against original WOA, GWO and three other commonly used algorithms. Results show that WOAGWO outperforms other algorithms depending on the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. Finally, WOAGWO is likewise applied to solve an engineering problem such as pressure vessel design. Then the results prove that WOAGWO achieves optimum solution which is better than WOA and Fitness Dependent Optimizer (FDO).

Improved Fitness-Dependent Optimizer Algorithm

The fitness-dependent optimizer (FDO) algorithm was recently introduced in 2019. An improved FDO (IFDO) algorithm is presented in this work, and this algorithm contributes considerably to refining the ability of the original FDO to address complicated optimization problems. To improve the FDO, the IFDO calculates the alignment and cohesion and then uses these behaviors with the pace at which the FDO updates its position. Moreover, in determining the weights, the FDO uses the weight factor (wf), which is zero in most cases and one in only a few cases. Conversely, the IFDO performs wf randomization in the [0-1] range and then minimizes the range when a better fitness weight value is achieved. In this work, the IFDO algorithm and its method of converging on the optimal solution are demonstrated. Additionally, 19 classical standard test function groups are utilized to test the IFDO, and then the FDO and three other well-known algorithms, namely, the particle swarm algorithm (PSO), dragonfly algorithm (DA), and genetic algorithm (GA), are selected to evaluate the IFDO results. Furthermore, the CECC06 2019 Competition, which is the set of IEEE Congress of Evolutionary Computation benchmark test functions, is utilized to test the IFDO, and then, the FDO and three recent algorithms, namely, the salp swarm algorithm (SSA), DA and whale optimization algorithm (WOA), are chosen to gauge the IFDO results. The results show that IFDO is practical in some cases, and its results are improved in most cases. Finally, to prove the practicability of the IFDO, it is used in real-world applications.

Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm -- A Survey and Performance Evaluation

This paper presents an in-depth survey and performance evaluation of the Cat Swarm Optimization (CSO) Algorithm. CSO is a robust and powerful metaheuristic swarm-based optimization approach that has received very positive feedback since its emergence. It has been tackling many optimization problems and many variants of it have been introduced. However, the literature lacks a detailed survey or a performance evaluation in this regard. Therefore, this paper is an attempt to review all these works, including its developments and applications, and group them accordingly. In addition, CSO is tested on 23 classical benchmark functions and 10 modern benchmark functions (CEC 2019). The results are then compared against three novel and powerful optimization algorithms, namely Dragonfly algorithm (DA), Butterfly optimization algorithm (BOA) and Fitness Dependent Optimizer (FDO). These algorithms are then ranked according to Friedman test and the results show that CSO ranks first on the whole. Finally, statistical approaches are employed to further confirm the outperformance of CSO algorithm.

A Simulation Model for Pedestrian Crowd Evacuation Based on Various AI Techniques

This paper attempts to design an intelligent simulation model for pedestrian crowd evacuation. For this purpose, the cellular automata(CA) was fully integrated with fuzzy logic, the kth nearest neighbors (KNN), and some statistical equations. In this model, each pedestrian was assigned a specific speed, according to his/her physical, biological and emotional features. The emergency behavior and evacuation efficiency of each pedestrian were evaluated by coupling his or her speed with various elements, such as environment, pedestrian distribution and familiarity with the exits. These elements all have great impacts on the evacuation process. Several experiments were carried out to verify the performance of the model in different emergency scenarios. The results show that the proposed model can predict the evacuation time and emergency behavior in various types of building interiors and pedestrian distributions. The research provides a good reference to the design of building evacuation systems.

Operational Framework for Recent Advances in Backtracking Search Optimisation Algorithm: A Systematic Review and Performance Evaluation

The experiments conducted in previous studies demonstrated the successful performance of BSA and its non-sensitivity toward the several types of optimisation problems. This success of BSA motivated researchers to work on expanding it, e.g., developing its improved versions or employing it for different applications and problem domains. However, there is a lack of literature review on BSA; therefore, reviewing the aforementioned modifications and applications systematically will aid further development of the algorithm. This paper provides a systematic review and meta-analysis that emphasise on reviewing the related studies and recent developments on BSA. Hence, the objectives of this work are two-fold: (i) First, two frameworks for depicting the main extensions and the uses of BSA are proposed. The first framework is a general framework to depict the main extensions of BSA, whereas the second is an operational framework to present the expansion procedures of BSA to guide the researchers who are working on improving it. (ii) Second, the experiments conducted in this study fairly compare the analytical performance of BSA with four other competitive algorithms: differential evolution (DE), particle swarm optimisation (PSO), artificial bee colony (ABC), and firefly (FF) on 16 different hardness scores of the benchmark functions with different initial control parameters such as problem dimensions and search space. The experimental results indicate that BSA is statistically superior than the aforementioned algorithms in solving different cohorts of numerical optimisation problems such as problems with different levels of hardness score, problem dimensions, and search spaces.

Investigating the effect of competitiveness power in estimating the average weighted price in electricity market

This paper evaluates the impact of the power extent on price in the electricity market. The competitiveness extent of the electricity market during specific times in a day is considered to achieve this. Then, the effect of competitiveness extent on the forecasting precision of the daily power price is assessed. A price forecasting model based on multi-layer perception via back propagation with the Levenberg-Marquardt mechanism is used. The Residual Supply Index (RSI) and other variables that affect prices are used as inputs to the model to evaluate the market competitiveness. The results show that using market power indices as inputs helps to increase forecasting accuracy. Thus, the competitiveness extent of the market power in different daily time periods is a notable variable in price formation. Moreover, market players cannot ignore the explanatory power of market power in price forecasting. In this research, the real data of the electricity market from 2013 is used and the main source of data is the Grid Management Company in Iran.

A Systematic and Meta-analysis Survey of Whale Optimization Algorithm

Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is a nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, which was proposed by Mirjalili and Lewis in 2016. This algorithm has shown its ability to solve many problems. Comprehensive surveys have been conducted about some other nature-inspired algorithms, such as ABC, PSO, etc.Nonetheless, no survey search work has been conducted on WOA. Therefore, in this paper, a systematic and meta analysis survey of WOA is conducted to help researchers to use it in different areas or hybridize it with other common algorithms. Thus, WOA is presented in depth in terms of algorithmic backgrounds, its characteristics, limitations, modifications, hybridizations, and applications. Next, WOA performances are presented to solve different problems. Then, the statistical results of WOA modifications and hybridizations are established and compared with the most common optimization algorithms and WOA. The survey's results indicate that WOA performs better than other common algorithms in terms of convergence speed and balancing between exploration and exploitation. WOA modifications and hybridizations also perform well compared to WOA. In addition, our investigation paves a way to present a new technique by hybridizing both WOA and BAT algorithms. The BAT algorithm is used for the exploration phase, whereas the WOA algorithm is used for the exploitation phase. Finally, statistical results obtained from WOA-BAT are very competitive and better than WOA in 16 benchmarks functions. WOA-BAT also outperforms well in 13 functions from CEC2005 and 7 functions from CEC2019.

Donkey and Smuggler Optimization Algorithm: A Collaborative Working Approach to Path Finding

Swarm Intelligence is a metaheuristic optimization approach that has become very predominant over the last few decades. These algorithms are inspired by animals' physical behaviors and their evolutionary perceptions. The simplicity of these algorithms allows researchers to simulate different natural phenomena to solve various real-world problems. This paper suggests a novel algorithm called Donkey and Smuggler Optimization Algorithm (DSO). The DSO is inspired by the searching behavior of donkeys. The algorithm imitates transportation behavior such as searching and selecting routes for movement by donkeys in the actual world. Two modes are established for implementing the search behavior and route-selection in this algorithm. These are the Smuggler and Donkeys. In the Smuggler mode, all the possible paths are discovered and the shortest path is then found. In the Donkeys mode, several donkey behaviors are utilized such as Run, Face & Suicide, and Face & Support. Real world data and applications are used to test the algorithm. The experimental results consisted of two parts, firstly, we used the standard benchmark test functions to evaluate the performance of the algorithm in respect to the most popular and the state of the art algorithms. Secondly, the DSO is adapted and implemented on three real-world applications namely; traveling salesman problem, packet routing, and ambulance routing. The experimental results of DSO on these real-world problems are very promising. The results exhibit that the suggested DSO is appropriate to tackle other unfamiliar search spaces and complex problems.

Fitness Dependent Optimizer: Inspired by the Bee Swarming Reproductive Process

In this paper, a novel swarm intelligent algorithm is proposed, known as the fitness dependent optimizer (FDO). The bee swarming reproductive process and their collective decision-making have inspired this algorithm; it has no algorithmic connection with the honey bee algorithm or the artificial bee colony algorithm. It is worth mentioning that FDO is considered a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based algorithm that updates the search agent position by adding velocity (pace). However, FDO calculates velocity differently; it uses the problem fitness function value to produce weights, and these weights guide the search agents during both the exploration and exploitation phases. Throughout the paper, the FDO algorithm is presented, and the motivation behind the idea is explained. Moreover, FDO is tested on a group of 19 classical benchmark test functions, and the results are compared with three well-known algorithms: PSO, the genetic algorithm (GA), and the dragonfly algorithm (DA), additionally, FDO is tested on IEEE Congress of Evolutionary Computation Benchmark Test Functions (CEC-C06, 2019 Competition) [1]. The results are compared with three modern algorithms: (DA), the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and the salp swarm algorithm (SSA). The FDO results show better performance in most cases and comparative results in other cases. Furthermore, the results are statistically tested with the Wilcoxon rank-sum test to show the significance of the results. Likewise, FDO stability in both the exploration and exploitation phases is verified and performance-proofed using different standard measurements. Finally, FDO is applied to real-world applications as evidence of its feasibility.

Lecturer Performance System Using Neural Network with Particle Swarm Optimization

The field of analyzing performance is very important and sensitive in particular when it is related to the performance of lecturers in academic institutions. Locating the weak points of lecturers through a system that provides an early warning to notify or reward the lecturers with warned or punished notices will help them to improve their weaknesses, leads to a better quality in the institutions. The current system has major issues in the higher education at Salahaddin University-Erbil (SUE) in Kurdistan-Iraq. These issues are: first, the assessment of lecturers' activities is conducted traditionally via the Quality Assurance Teams at different departments and colleges at the university, second, the outcomes in some cases of lecturers' performance provoke a low level of acceptance among lectures, as these cases are reflected and viewed by some academic communities as unfair cases, and finally, the current system is not accurate and vigorous. In this paper, Particle Swarm Optimization Neural Network is used to assess performance of lecturers in more fruitful way and also to enhance the accuracy of recognition system. Different real and novel data sets are collected from SUE. The prepared datasets preprocessed and important features are then fed as input source to the training and testing phases. Particle Swarm Optimization is used to find the best weights and biases in the training phase of the neural network. The best accuracy rate obtained in the test phase is 98.28 %.

A Multi Hidden Recurrent Neural Network with a Modified Grey Wolf Optimizer

Identifying university students' weaknesses results in better learning and can function as an early warning system to enable students to improve. However, the satisfaction level of existing systems is not promising. New and dynamic hybrid systems are needed to imitate this mechanism. A hybrid system (a modified Recurrent Neural Network with an adapted Grey Wolf Optimizer) is used to forecast students' outcomes. This proposed system would improve instruction by the faculty and enhance the students' learning experiences. The results show that a modified recurrent neural network with an adapted Grey Wolf Optimizer has the best accuracy when compared with other models.
