Transport Process in Multi-Junctions of Quantum Systems

We consider the junction of multiple one-dimensional systems and study how conserved currents transport at the junction. To characterize the transport process, we introduce reflection/transmission coefficients by applying boundary conformal field theory. We compute the reflection/transmission coefficients for some examples to derive the closed formulas. The formulas demonstrate spin-flip transport, where the spin polarization is flipped at the junction.

Towards Holographic Spintronics

We study transport phenomena of total angular momentum in holography, as a first step toward holographic understanding of spin transport phenomena. Spin current, which has both the local Lorentz index for spins and the space-time vector index for current, couples naturally to the bulk spin connection. Therefore the bulk spin connection becomes the source for the boundary spin current. This allows us to evaluate the spin current holographically, with a relation to the stress tensor and metric fluctuations in the bulk. We examine the spin transport coefficients and the thermal spin Hall conductivity in a simple holographic setup.

Duality and integrability of supermatrix model with external source

We study the Hermitian supermatrix model involving an external source. We derive the determinantal formula for the supermatrix partition function, and also for the expectation value of the characteristic polynomial ratio, which yields the duality between the characteristic polynomial and the external source with an arbitrary matrix potential function. We also show that the supermatrix integral satisfies the one and two dimensional Toda lattice equations as well as the ordinary matrix model.

Bulk angular momentum and Hall viscosity in chiral superconductors

We establish the Berry-phase formulas for the angular momentum (AM) and the Hall viscosity (HV) to investigate chiral superconductors (SCs) in two and three dimensions. The AM is defined by the temporal integral of the anti-symmetric momentum current induced by an adiabatic deformation, while the HV is defined by the symmetric momentum current induced by the symmetric torsional electric field. Without suffering from the system size or geometry, we obtain the macroscopic AM $L_z = \hbar m N_0/2$ at zero temperature in full-gap chiral SCs, where $m$ is the magnetic quantum number and $N_0$ is the total number of electrons. We also find that the HV is equal to half the AM at zero temperature not only in full-gap chiral SCs as is well-known but also in nodal ones, but its behavior at finite temperature is different in the two cases.

Note on a duality of topological branes

We show a duality of branes in the topological B-model by inserting two kinds of the non-compact branes simultaneously. We explicitly derive the integral formula for the matrix model partition function describing this situation, which correspondingly includes both of the characteristic polynomial and the external source. We show that these two descriptions are dual to each other through the Fourier transformation, and the brane partition function satisfies integrable equations in one and two dimensions.

Hofstadter problem in higher dimensions

We investigate some generalizations of the Hofstadter problem to higher dimensions with Abelian and non-Abelian gauge field configurations. We numerically show the hierarchical structure in the energy spectra with several lattice models. It is also pointed out the equivalence betwee the π-flux state and the staggered formalism of Dirac fermion.

Current Reflection and Transmission at Conformal Defects: Applying BCFT to Transport Process

We study reflection/transmission process at conformal defects by introducing new transport coefficients for conserved currents. These coefficients are defined by using BCFT techniques thanks to the folding trick, which turns the conformal defect into the boundary. With this definition, exact computations are demonstrated to describe reflection/transmission process for a class of conformal defects. We also compute the boundary entropy based on the boundary state.

Phase structure of topological insulators by lattice strong-coupling expansion

The effect of the strong electron correlation on the topological phase structure of 2-dimensional (2D) and 3D topological insulators is investigated, in terms of lattice gauge theory. The effective model for noninteracting system is constructed similarly to the lattice fermions with the Wilson term, corresponding to the spin-orbit coupling. Introducing the electron-electron interaction as the coupling to the gauge field, we analyze the behavior of emergent orders by the strong coupling expansion methods. We show that there appears a new phase with the in-plane antiferromagnetic order in the 2D topological insulator, which is similar to the so-called "Aoki phase" in lattice QCD with Wilson fermions. In the 3D case, on the other hand, there does not appear such a new phase, and the electron correlation results in the shift of the phase boundary between the topological phase and the normal phase.

Euler Products beyond the Boundary

We investigate the behavior of the Euler products of the Riemann zeta function and Dirichlet L-functions on the critical line. A refined version of the Riemann hypothesis, which is named "the Deep Riemann Hypothesis" (DRH), is examined. We also study various analogs for global function fields. We give an interpretation for the nontrivial zeros from the viewpoint of statistical mechanics.

Phase structure of 2-dimensional topological insulators by lattice strong coupling expansion

The phase structure of 2-dimensional topological insulators under a sufficiently strong electron-electron interaction is investigated. The effective theory is constructed by extending the idea of the Kane-Mele model on the graphenelike honeycomb lattice, in terms of U(1) lattice gauge theory (quantum electrodynamics, QED). We analyze the phase structure by the techniques of strong coupling expansion of lattice gauge theory. As a result, we find that the topological phase structure of the system is modified by the electron-electron interaction. There evolves a new phase with the antiferromagnetism not parallel to the direction pointed by the spin-orbit coupling, in between the conventional and the topological insulator phases. We also discuss the physical implication of the new phase structure found here, in analogy to the parity-broken phase in lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD), known as "Aoki phase".

QCD Phase Diagram with 2-flavor Lattice Fermion Formulations

We propose a new framework for investigating two-flavor lattice QCD with finite temperature and density by applying the Karsten-Wilczek lattice fermion, in which a species-dependent imaginary chemical potential can reduce the number of species to two without losing chiral symmetry. This lattice discretization is useful for study on finite-(T,μ) QCD since its discrete symmetries are appropriate for the case. To show its applicability, we study strong-coupling lattice QCD with temperature and chemical potential. We derive the effective potential of the scalar meson field and obtain a critical line of the chiral phase transition, which is qualitatively consistent with the phenomenologically expected phase diagram.

Strong coupling analysis of Aoki phase in Staggered-Wilson fermions

We study strong-coupling lattice QCD with staggered-Wilson fermions, with an emphasis on the possibility of spontaneous parity breaking. We perform effective potential analysis in the strong-coupling limit. From gap equations we find the pion condensate becomes nonzero in some range of a mass parameter, which indicates the existence of the parity-broken phase. We also find massless pions and PCAC relations around the second-order phase boundary. These results suggest that we can take the chiral limit by tuning a mass parameter in lattice QCD with staggered-Wilson fermions as with the Wilson fermion.

Spinless basis for spin-singlet FQH states

We investigate an alternative description of the SU(M)-singlet FQH state by using the spinless basis. The SU(M)-singlet Halperin state is obtained via the q-deformation of the Laughlin state and its root of unity limit, by applying the Yangian Gelfand-Zetlin basis for the spin Calogero-Sutherland model. The squeezing rule for the SU(M) state is also investigated in terms of the spinless basis.

QCD phase diagram with 2-flavor lattice fermion formulations

We propose a new framework for investigating two-flavor lattice QCD with finite temperature and density. We consider the Karsten-Wilczek fermion formulation, in which a species-dependent imaginary chemical potential term can reduce the number of species to two without losing chiral symmetry. This lattice discretization is useful for study on finite-($T$,$μ$) QCD since its discrete symmetries are appropriate for the case. To show its applicability, we study strong-coupling lattice QCD with temperature and chemical potential. We derive the effective potential of the scalar meson field and obtain a critical line of the chiral phase transition, which is qualitatively consistent with the phenomenologically expected phase diagram. We also discuss that $O(1/a)$ renormalization of imaginary chemical potential can be controlled by adjusting a parameter of a dimension-3 counterterm.

The Chiral Heat Effect

We consider the thermal response of a (3+1)-dimensional theory with a chiral anomaly on a curved space motivated by the chiral magnetic effect. We find a new phenomenon, called the chiral heat effect, such that the thermal current is induced transverse to a gradient of the temperature even on a flat space. This effect is expected to be observed in QCD experiment as well as the chiral magnetic effect. We study a similar topological effect on the spacetime with a torsion. A holographic construction is also discussed with the D3/D7 and the Sakai-Sugimoto models.

Viscoelastic-electromagnetism and Hall viscosity

We introduce a kind of electromagnetism, which we call viscoelastic-electromagnetism, to investigate viscoelastic transport phenomena. It is shown that Cartan's formalism of general relativity is essential for viscoelastic theory, and then the corresponding electric and magnetic fields are regarded as a velocity gradient and a Burgers vector density, respectively. As an application of this formalism, the Streda formula for the Hall viscosity is obtained.

Vortex counting from field theory

The vortex partition function in 2d N = (2,2) U(N) gauge theory is derived from the field theoretical point of view by using the moduli matrix approach. The character for the tangent space at each moduli space fixed point is written in terms of the moduli matrix, and then the vortex partition function is obtained by applying the localization formula. We find that dealing with the fermionic zero modes is crucial to obtain the vortex partition function with the anti-fundamental and adjoint matters in addition to the fundamental chiral multiplets. The orbifold vortex partition function is also investigated from the field theoretical point of view.
