Entanglement entropy of critical spin liquids

Quantum spin liquids are phases of matter whose internal structure is not captured by a local order parameter. Particularly intriguing are critical spin liquids, where strongly interacting excitations control low energy properties. Here we calculate their bipartite entanglement entropy that characterize their quantum structure. In particular we calculate the Renyi entropy $S_2$, on model wavefunctions obtained by Gutzwiller projection of a Fermi sea. Although the wavefunctions are not sign positive, $S_2$ can be calculated on relatively large systems (>324 spins), using the variational Monte Carlo technique. On the triangular lattice we find that entanglement entropy of the projected Fermi-sea state violates the boundary law, with $S_2$ enhanced by a logarithmic factor. This is an unusual result for a bosonic wave-function reflecting the presence of emergent fermions. These techniques can be extended to study a wide class of other phases.

Weak Mott insulators on the triangular lattice: possibility of a gapless nematic quantum spin liquid

We study the energetics of Gutzwiller projected BCS states of various symmetries for the triangular lattice antiferromagnet with a four particle ring exchange using variational Monte Carlo methods. In a range of parameters the energetically favored state is found to be a projected $d_{x^2-y^2}$ paired state which breaks lattice rotational symmetry. We show that the properties of this nematic or orientationally ordered paired spin liquid state as a function of temperature and pressure can account for many of the experiments on organic materials. We also study the ring-exchange model with ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange and find that amongst the studied ansätze, a projected $f-$wave state is the most favorable.

A non-abelian spin-liquid in a spin-1 quantum magnet

We study a time-reversal invariant non-abelian spin-liquid state in an $SU (2)$ symmetric spin $S = 1$ quantum magnet on a triangular lattice. The spin-liquid is obtained by quantum disordering a non-collinear nematic state. We show that such a spin-liquid cannot be obtained by the standard projective construction for spin-liquids. We also study phase transition between the spin-liquid and the non-collinear nematic state and show that it cannot be described within Landau-Ginzburg- Wilson paradigm.

Quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnet to a spin liquid in a metal

We study quantum phase transitions from easy-plane antiferromagnetic metals to paramagnetic metals in Kondo-Heisenberg lattice systems. If the paramagnetic metal is a fractionalized Fermi liquid then the universal critical properties of the phase transition are unaffected for a weak Kondo coupling even when the Fermi surface intersects the magnetic zone boundary. This is in striking contrast to the conventional theory of phase transitions between paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic metals where any Kondo coupling is strongly relevant, and leads to a Landau-damped `Hertz-Millis' theory. The electron quasi-particle remains well-defined in the quantum critical regime and the critical spin fluctuations only contribute subleading corrections to the various properties of conduction electrons.

Topological spin Hall states, charged skyrmions, and superconductivity in two dimensions

We study the properties of two dimensional topological spin hall insulators which arise through spontaneous breakdown of spin symmetry in systems that are spin rotation invariant. Such a phase breaks spin rotation but not time reversal symmetry and has a vector order parameter. Skyrmion configurations in this vector order parameter are shown to have electric charge that is twice the electron charge. When the spin Hall order is destroyed by condensation of skyrmions superconductivity results. This may happen either through doping or at fixed filling by tuning interactions to close the skyrmion gap. In the latter case the superconductor- spin Hall insulator quantum phase transition can be second order even though the two phases break distinct symmetries.

Quantum spin nematics, dimerization, and deconfined criticality in quasi-one dimensional spin-1 magnets

We study theoretically the destruction of spin nematic order due to quantum fluctuations in quasi-one dimensional spin-1 magnets. If the nematic ordering is disordered by condensing disclinations then quantum Berry phase effects induce dimerization in the resulting paramagnet. We develop a theory for a Landau-forbidden second order transition between the spin nematic and dimerized states found in recent numerical calculations. Numerical tests of the theory are suggested.

Effect of Surface Elasticity on Mode-3 Crack Stress Fields

The surface stress can have important effects on the elastic properties of nano-sized structures. Here we analyze the effect of surface stress on Mode-3 crack displacement and stress-field solutions under the assumption of linear elasticity. We show that surface effects generate non-$K$ terms near the crack-tip. We also find the effect of such terms on the conventional small-scale yielding assumption.
