Universal Torsion-Induced Interaction from Large Extra Dimensions

We consider the Kaluza-Klein (KK) scenario in which only gravity exists in the bulk. Without the assumption of symmetric connection, the presence of brane fermions induces torsion. The result is a universal axial contact interaction that dominates those induced by KK gravitons. This enhancement arises from a large spin density on the brane. Using a global fit to Z-pole observables, we find the 3 sigma bound on the scale of quantum gravity to be 28 TeV for n=2. If Dirac or light sterile neutrinos are present, the data from SN1987A increase the bound to \sqrt{n}M_S >= 210 TeV.

Constraining New Physics with Vertex Corrections

We discuss how new physics not encompassed within the STU oblique correction framework can be constrained from precision electroweak measurements via vertex corrections to Z-pole observables.

Constraints on Two-Higgs Doublet Models at Large tan{beta} from W and Z decays

We study constraints on type-II two Higgs doublet models at large tan{beta} from LEP/SLD Z-pole data and from lepton universality violation in W decay. We perform a global fit and find that, in the context of Z decay, the LEP/SLD experimental values for lepton universality violation, R_b, and A_b all somewhat disfavor the model. Contributions from the neutral Higgs sector can be used to constrain the scalar-pseudoscalar Higgs mass splittings. Contributions from the charged Higgs sector allow us to constrain the charged Higgs mass. For tan{beta}=100 we obtain the 1 sigma classical (Bayesian) bounds of m_{H+} > 670 GeV (370 GeV) and 1 > m_{h0}/m_{A0} > 0.68 (0.64). The 2 sigma bounds are weak. Currently, the Tevatron experimental limits on lepton universality violation in W decay provide no significant constraint on the Higgs sector.

Constraints on R-parity violating couplings from LEP/SLD hadronic observables

We analyze the one loop corrections to hadronic Z decays in an R-parity violating extension to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Performing a global fit to all the hadronic observables at the Z-peak, we obtain stringent constraints on the R-violating couplings constants lambda' and lambda''. As a result of the strong constraints from the b asymmetry parameters A_b and A_FB(b), we find that the couplings lambda'{i31}, lambda'{i32}, and lambda''{321} are ruled out at the 1 sigma level, and that lambda'{i33} and lambda''{33i} are ruled out at the 2 sigma level. We also obtain Bayesian confidence limits for the R-violating couplings.

Constraints on R-parity violating couplings from lepton universality

We analyze the one loop corrections to leptonic W and Z decays in an R-parity violating extension to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We find that lepton universality violation in the Z line-shape variables alone would strengthen the bounds on the magnitudes of the lambda' couplings, but a global fit on all data leaves the bounds virtually unchanged at |lambda'_{33k}| < 0.42 and |lambda'_{23k}| < 0.50 at the 2 sigma level. Bounds from W decays are less stringent: |lambda'_{33k}| < 2.4 at 2 sigma, as a consequence of the weaker Fermilab experimental bounds on lepton universality violation in W decays. We also point out the potential of constraining R-parity violating couplings from the measurement of the Upsilon invisible width.

Precision Tests of Electroweak Physics

We review the current status of precision electroweak measurements and the constraints they impose on new physics. We perform a model independent analysis using the STU-formalism of Ref. 1, and then discuss how the Z-pole data from LEP and SLD can be used to constrain models that are not covered within that framework.

Charge assignments in multiple-U(1) gauge theories

We discuss the choice of gauge field basis in multiple-U(1) gauge theories. We find that there is a preferred basis, specified by the charge orthogonality condition, in which the U(1) gauge fields do not mix under one-loop renormalization group running.

An analysis of Precision Electroweak Measurements: Summer 98 Update

We update our analysis of precision electroweak measurements using the latest data announced at Moriond, March 1998. Possible oblique corrections from new physics are parametrized using the STU formalism of Ref.[1], and non-oblique corrections to the Zbb vertex are parametrized using the xi_b zeta_b formalism of Ref.[2]. The implications of the analysis on minimal SU(5) grand unification is discussed.

Predictions of $m_b/m_τ$ and $m_t$ in an Asymptotically Non-Free Theory

We discuss an extention of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with the 4th and anti-4th generations which have $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ invariant masses. Due to the the extra generations, all three running gauge couplings become asymptotically non--free while preserving gauge coupling unification at the GUT scale. We show that due to the asymptotically non--free character of the gauge couplings: (1) the top and bottom Yukawa couplings are strongly focused onto infrared fixed points as they are evolved down in scale making their values at $μ=\mz$ insensitive to their initial values at $μ=\mgut$; (2) the model predicts $\R(\mz) \equiv Y_b/Y_τ|_{μ=\mz}\approx 1.8$, which is consistent with the experimental value provided we take the ratio of Yukawa couplings at the GUT scale to be $\R(\mgut) = Y_b/Y_τ|_{μ= \mgut} = 1/3$; (3) the $t$ mass prediction comes out to be $\mt\approx 180\,\GeV$ which is also consistent with experiment.

An Analysis of Non-Oblique Corrections to the $Z b \bar b$ Vertex

We present a model--independent analysis of the $Z b \bar b$ vertex, with the aim of constraining contributions of new physics to the left- and right--handed couplings of the $b$. We find that the left--handed coupling of the $b$ is quite narrowly constrained by present data, but that the right--handed coupling is still largely unconstrained.

Comment on the Dispersion Relations used to Calculate $Δρ$

We use the operator product expansion (OPE) to show that non-perturbative QCD corrections to $Δρ$ can be calculated using unsubtracted dispersion relations for either the transverse or the longitudinal vacuum polarization functions. Recent calculations of the non-perturbative contribution to $Δρ$ based on a non-relativistic calculation of corrections to the $\ttbar$ threshold are inconsistent with this result.

Oblique Corrections To The W Width

The lowest-order expression for the partial $W$ width to $e ν,~Γ(W \to e ν) = G_μM_W^3 /(6 π\sqrt{2})$, has no oblique radiative corrections from new physics if the measured $W$ mass is used. Here $G_μ= (1.16639 \pm 0.00002) \times 10^{-5}$ GeV/$c^2$ is the muon decay constant. For the present value of $M_W = (80.14 \pm 0.27)$ GeV/$c^2$, and with $m_t = 140$ GeV$/c^2$, one expects $Γ(W \to e ν) = (224.4 \pm 2.3)$ MeV. The total width $Γ_{\rm tot}(W)$ is also expected to lack oblique corrections from new physics, so that $Γ_{\rm tot} (W)/ Γ(W \to e ν) = 3 + 6 [1 + \{α_s (M_W)/π\}]$. Present data are consistent with this prediction.
