Taste-splitting mass and edge modes in $3+1$ D staggered fermions

We investigate the symmetry structure of the $3+1$ D staggered fermion Hamiltonian and its implications for anomalies. Since the spin and flavor degrees of freedom of Dirac fermions are distributed over the lattice, in addition to the standard on-site mass term, the staggered fermion system also admits one-, two-, and three-link bilinear terms within a unit cube as local, charge conserving mass terms with different spin and flavor dependence. We identify the spin flavor structures of all those bilinear mass terms and determine the symmetries preserved by each of them. Among them, one of the one-link mass terms preserves a larger residual symmetry associated with conserved charges that generate the Onsager algebra. Motivated by this structure, we consider a kink profile of the one-link mass and analyze the resulting domain-wall system. In the low-energy limit, the $3+1$ D bulk becomes gapped, while two-flavor massless Dirac fermions appear as localized modes on the $2+1$ D domain wall. We show that the bulk conserved charges act on the wall as generators of a flavor $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry, and that no symmetric mass gap is allowed for the boundary theory when this $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry and space reflection symmetry are both imposed. This realizes the parity anomaly of the boundary theory and shows that the boundary flavor symmetry and anomaly descend from the ultraviolet staggered-fermion Hamiltonian rather than emerging only in the infrared.

Imaginary pseudo entropy encodes temporal orientation

Pseudo entropy between quantum states at different times is generally complex, yet its imaginary part has lacked a bounded operational meaning. We show that a calibrated replica interferometer converts the pseudo-Rényi phase into a directly measurable record of transition orientation. Together with replica visibility, it exactly determines the trace distance between forward and backward ancilla outputs and hence the Helstrom-optimal single-shot success probability. At short times, the symmetrized covariance of the modular and physical Hamiltonians sets the initial distinguishability response. Under any common quantum channel, the corresponding orientation information can only decrease, with equality characterized by Petz recovery. Imaginary pseudo entropy therefore records a reversible distinction between temporal orientations, while coarse graining can make the loss of that record irreversible.

Lattice fermion formulation via Physics-Informed Neural Networks: Ginsparg-Wilson relation and Overlap fermions

We propose a novel, machine-learning-based framework for constructing lattice fermions using Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs). Our approach treats the formulation of the Dirac operator as an optimization problem guided by physical requirements, such as symmetries, locality and doubler-decoupling conditions. We first demonstrate that, when trained to satisfy the Ginsparg-Wilson (GW) relation as a soft constraint, a neural network reproduces the overlap fermion operator to high numerical accuracy and learns an effective sign-function mapping without explicitly using a prescribed polynomial or rational approximation. Secondly, we extend the framework from operator construction to machine-assisted algebraic discovery. Within a generalized polynomial ansatz, the network autonomously drives higher-order terms to zero and recovers the standard Ginsparg-Wilson relation. Remarkably, by changing the initial search bias, the same framework also finds a distinct solution corresponding to a Fujikawa-type generalized GW relation.

Real-time pseudo entropy and modular-Hamiltonian correlations

Pseudo entropy is a complex-valued generalization of entanglement entropy defined from a reduced transition matrix. We study the pseudo entropy associated with a real-time transition matrix between an initial pure state and its unitary time evolution. For a subsystem $A$, we show that the short-time behavior of real-time pseudo entropy is governed by the correlation between the physical Hamiltonian $H$ and the modular Hamiltonian $K_A=-\logρ_A$ of the initial reduced state, $ S_A(t,0)=S_A(0)-it \langle K_A(H-\langle H\rangle)\rangle + \mathcal{O}(t^2)$. For Hermitian dynamics, the initial imaginary response is controlled by the symmetrized covariance of $H$ and $K_A$ with an overall minus sign, while the initial real response is governed by their commutator. Thus the imaginary part of real-time pseudo entropy is not merely a branch artifact: it is a time-oriented modular response generated by the correlation between microscopic time evolution and subsystem coarse graining. We clarify the relation of this result to the known first law of pseudo entropy, derive an all-order expression in a Schmidt-diagonal model, recover thermal pseudo entropy as a special case, illustrate the covariance/commutator decomposition in a two-qubit model, and confirm the covariance response in transverse-field Ising-chain quenches, including a finite-size study of a modular susceptibility near the Ising critical region. We discuss how this amplitude-level oriented response can be related to ordinary entropy production, and also give a concrete $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric toy-model illustration of the non-Hermitian extension.

Exact WKB in all sectors II: Potentials with non-degenerate saddles

We discuss the exact quantization of general one-dimensional potentials in view of the exact-WKB formalism. Building on our previous work, we perform analytic continuations across different sectors via the complexification to the spectral (energy) parameter $u$ and identify continuous and discontinuous transitions of the exact spectrum for generic potentials. When the transition is discontinuous, it is characterized by the Stokes phenomena, inducing different exact (median) quantization conditions, thereby distinct trans-series structures valid in different sectors. We analyze two illustrative examples, namely asymmetric triple-well (ATW) and tilted double-well (TDW), and verify the general qualitative analysis by deriving exact (median) quantization conditions in each sector. Moreover, by obtaining the trans-series solutions for each system, we identify bion/bounce configurations and show that the trans-series of ATW is organized in accordance with the cluster expansion of the bion gas and there should exist a previously neglected complex saddle in the TDW system. These identifications further strengthen the link between path integral and exact-WKB formalisms, while also demonstrating the predictive power of the latter. In parallel, for the P-NP relations of genus-1 systems, we derive transformation rules between any perturbative and non-perturbative pair of WKB-cycles. Our results show that the entire resurgence data of a genus-1 system transforms only by the change of classical parameters, i.e. frequencies and bion/bounce actions, and the perturbative energy series. This also reveals the underlying reasons of the previously found $S$-duality transformations.

Exact WKB analysis of inverted triple-well: resonance, PT-symmetry breaking, and resurgence

We study non-Hermitian quantum mechanics of an inverted triple-well potential within the exact WKB framework. For a single classical potential, different Siegert boundary conditions define three distinct quantum problems: the PT-symmetric, resonance, and anti-resonance systems. For each case, we derive the exact quantization condition and construct the associated trans-series solution. By identifying the resurgent structures and cancellations in these non-Hermitian setups, we obtain the median-summed series, clarifying when the spectra are real or complex in accordance with the physical properties of each system. Establishing explicit links to the semi-classical path integral formalism, we elucidate the roles of bounce and bion configurations in these non-Hermitian systems. This analysis predicts PT-symmetry breaking, which we also verify numerically. Using the median quantization conditions, we prove the existence of this symmetry breaking and establish an exact equation for the exceptional point, which emerges as a remarkably simple algebraic relation between the bounce and bion actions. We further show that the median-summed non-perturbative correction to the spectrum vanishes at the exceptional point, while the resurgent structure survives through a universal minimal trans-series. For the resonance and anti-resonance systems, we find that the exact median-summed spectra are related by complex conjugation, representing time reversal in this setting, are necessarily complex, and do not exhibit an exceptional point. Although their spectra differ significantly from the PT-symmetric case, they share the same minimal trans-series. By maintaining explicit links with the path integral saddles and the formal theory of resurgence, our analysis provides a unified and general perspective on the quantization of non-Hermitian theories.

Adiabatic continuity in a partially reduced twisted Eguchi-Kawai model with one adjoint Dirac fermion

We numerically investigate whether the center-symmetric confined phase of large-$N$ $SU(N)$ gauge theory with one adjoint Dirac fermion persists under spatial compactification on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$. To this end, we employ a partially reduced twisted Eguchi-Kawai (TEK) model on a $1^3 \times L_4$ lattice with an adjoint Wilson fermion, and measure both the Polyakov loop around $S^1$ and order parameters for volume independence in the reduced directions. For $N=36$, $L_4=2$, $b=0.30\text{-}0.46$, and $κ=0.03\text{-}0.16$, we find that, with periodic boundary conditions, the Polyakov loop remains near zero in the light-fermion regime as the circle size is reduced. For the modified twist, the volume-independence order parameters are also consistent with zero in the explored region, supporting the validity of the partially reduced description. These results provide numerical evidence, within the reduced-model setup and parameter range studied, for an adiabatic-continuity scenario in which the confined phase is smoothly connected between large and small circles. By contrast, with antiperiodic boundary conditions, the Polyakov loop exhibits a clear deconfinement transition. We also discuss how this scenario is compatible with the anomaly constraints of the underlying four-dimensional theory. The symmetric twist is examined as a useful comparison, although its volume-independence properties appear less robust at the present value of $N$.

Minimal-doubling and single-Weyl Hamiltonians

We develop a systematic Hamiltonian formulation of minimally doubled lattice fermions in (3+1) dimensions, derive their nodal structures (structures of zeros), and classify their symmetry patterns for both four-component Dirac and two-component Weyl constructions. Motivated by recent single-Weyl proposals based on Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) representation, we argue that the corresponding single-Weyl Hamiltonians are obtained from the minimal-doubling Hamiltonians supplemented by an appropriate species-splitting mass term, and we re-examine the non-onsite symmetry protecting the physical Weyl node in terms of a Ginsparg-Wilson-type relation. We then construct a one-parameter family of deformations that preserves all the symmetries and demonstrate that, once the parameter exceeds a critical value, additional Weyl nodes emerge and the system exits the single-node regime. This indicates that in interacting theories radiative corrections can generate symmetry-allowed counterterms, so maintaining the desired single-Weyl phase generically requires "moderate" parameter tuning.

$\mathbb{Z}_N$ stability and continuity in twisted Eguchi-Kawai model with two-flavor adjoint fermions

We investigate the twisted Eguchi-Kawai (TEK) reduced model of four-dimensional $SU(N)$ gauge theory in the presence of two-flavor adjoint fermions (adjoint TEK model). Using Monte Carlo simulations with $N=121$, twist parameter $k=1$, hopping parameter $κ=0.01$-$0.03$ ($\llκ_c $) and inverse 't Hooft coupling $b=0.30$-$0.45$, we show that heavy adjoint fermions stabilize the $(\mathbb{Z}_N)^4$ center-symmetric vacuum even for the minimal twist satisfying $k/\sqrt{N} < 1/9$, where the $(\mathbb{Z}_N)^4$ symmetry is spontaneously broken in the absence of adjoint fermions. This result also suggests that the adjoint TEK model with the minimal twist is equivalent to $SU(N)$ gauge theory over a broader $(κ,b)$ parameter region than the adjoint EK model without twist. We further extend our analysis to a partially reduced model to realize a geometry akin to $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$ and study the theory under $S^1$ compactification with periodic adjoint fermions. Numerical simulations with $N=16$-$49$, $b=0.30$-$0.46$ and $κ=0.03$-$0.16$ supports the adiabatic continuity conjecture: with periodic adjoint fermions, the theory remains in a center-symmetric (confined) phase as the $S^1$ circle size is reduced, in contrast to the deconfining transition observed in the pure TEK model or in the TEK model with antiperiodic adjoint fermions. We present the Polyakov loop measurements and consistency checks supporting these findings.

Fractional instantons in 2d $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model and 4d Yang-Mills theory with 't Hooft twists

We derive the explicit formula for fractional BPS lumps (or fractional instantons) in the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ nonlinear sigma model on a two-dimensional torus under various shift-clock twisted boundary conditions. After regularizing the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model by an $N$-component Abelian-Higgs model, those twisted boundary conditions introduce nontrivial 't~Hooft fluxes $p/N$ for the $U(1)$ gauge field, and the topological charge becomes fractionalized as $k+p/N\in \mathbb{Z}+p/N$. The moduli space is globally determined as the $\mathbb{C}P^{Nk+p-1}$-fiber bundle on a $2$-torus, which is a Kähler manifold of complex dimension $Nk + p$ as predicted by the index theorem. We present two different parametrizations of the moduli space: one of them immediately identifies the small-lump singularity appearing in the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ limit, while the other makes the modular invariance manifest. We also discuss the implications of our finding for the $4$d $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on the $4$-torus with 't~Hooft twists. By tuning the aspect ratio of the 4-torus, fractional instantons in the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model with a non-Fubini-Study metric are obtained through the dimensional reduction of $4$d Yang-Mills theory, whose moduli space coincides with the one obtained for the standard $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model as complex manifolds.

Exact-WKB Analysis of Two-level Floquet Systems

We explore the application of the exact Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) analysis to two-level Floquet systems and establish a systematic procedure to calculate the quasi-energy and Floquet effective Hamiltonian. We show that, in the exact-WKB analysis, the quasi-energy and Floquet effective Hamiltonian can be expressed in terms of cycle integrals (Voros symbol), which characterize monodromy matrices for Schrödinger-type differential equations governing two-level Floquet systems. We analytically evaluate the cycle integrals using the low-frequency expansion and derive both perturbative and non-perturbative corrections to the quasi-energy and Floquet effective Hamiltonian. To verify the accuracy of our results, we compare them with numerical calculations and analyze resonant oscillations, which reveal non-perturbative features that cannot be captured by the perturbative expansion.

Exact WKB in all sectors I: Potentials with degenerate saddles

We explore the exact-WKB (EWKB) method through the analysis of Airy and Weber types, with an emphasis on the exact quantization of locally harmonic potentials in multiple sectors. The core innovation of our work lies in introducing a novel complexification approach to the energy parameter $u$, distinct from the common complexification of the (semi-classical) expansion parameter used in Borel summability. This new technique allows for continuous analytical continuation across different sectors of a potential while maintaining the exact quantization condition, even before median summation. By redefining the $A$-cycle above the potential barrier top, we ensure the quantization condition remains real and, by use of the Stokes automorphism and the median resummation, show that the resurgence structure is preserved across transitions between sectors. Furthermore, we discuss the Weber-type exact-WKB method, offering exact estimates for quantum actions around all types of saddle points, generalizing previous results. Through the analysis of these quantum actions, we reveal the presence of $S$-duality, facilitating the exchange between perturbative and non-perturbative behaviors, and we conjecture the mapping of the P-NP relations between dual theories. Our study encompasses periodic and symmetric double-well potentials, demonstrating that the exact-WKB method captures intricate structures in quantum systems in all sectors, including multi-instanton contributions and the resurgence of quantum actions.

Monopole-vortex continuity of ${\mathcal N}=1$ super Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb{R}^2 \times S^1 \times S^1$ with 't Hooft twist

We study ${\mathcal N} = 1$ $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on $\mathbb{R}^2\times (S^1)_3\times (S^1)_4$ with the 't Hooft twist. The theory becomes weakly coupled if the length $L_4$ of $(S^1)_4$ is sufficiently small, $NL_4Λ\ll 1$. We explore the nonperturbative dynamics at the weak-coupling regime by changing the size of $L_3$ and uncover how $3$d monopole/bion-based effective theory for $L_3\gg L_4$ is related to the $2$d vortex-based theory for $L_3\approx L_4$. The highlights of our results are (1) the smooth "weak-weak" continuity of the vacuum structure and gluino condensate during the $3$d-$2$d dimensional reduction, (2) the switching of Wilson loop behavior from the area law in $3$d to the perimeter law in $2$d via a "double-string" picture, (3) the role of mass deformation in breaking discrete chiral symmetry and restoring the area law in $2$d, and (4) the microscopic investigation of bions during the reduction from $3$d to $2$d and the cancellation of the vacuum energy due to the hidden topological angle. We also discuss the generalization of our results for (1)--(3) from $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM to QCD with adjoint quarks.

Equivalence of lattice operators and graph matrices

We explore the relationship between lattice field theory and graph theory, placing special emphasis on the interplay between Dirac and scalar lattice operators and matrices within the realm of spectral graph theory. Beyond delving into fundamental concepts of spectral graph theory, such as adjacency and Laplacian matrices, we introduce a novel matrix named as "anti-symmetrized adjacency matrix", specifically tailored for cycle digraphs ($T^1$ lattice) and simple directed paths ($B^1$ lattice). The nontrivial relation between graph theory matrices and lattice operators shows that the graph Laplacian matrix mirrors the lattice scalar operator and the Wilson term in lattice fermions, while the anti-symmetrized adjacency matrix, along with its extensions to higher dimensions, are equivalent to naive lattice Dirac operators. Building upon these connections, we provide rigorous proofs for two key assertions: (i) The count of zero-modes in a free lattice scalar operator coincides with the zeroth Betti number of the underlying graph (lattice). (ii) The maximum count of Dirac zero-modes in a free lattice fermion operator is equivalent to the cumulative sum of all Betti numbers when the $D$-dimensional graph results from a cartesian product of cycle digraphs ($T^1$ lattice) and simple directed paths ($B^1$ lattice).

New conjecture on exact Dirac zero-modes of lattice fermions

We propose a new conjecture on the relation between the species doubling of lattice fermions and the topology of manifold on which the fermion action is defined. Our conjecture claims that the maximal number of fermion species on a finite-volume and finite-spacing lattice defined by discretizing a $D$-dimensional manifold is equal to the summation of the Betti numbers of the manifold. We start with reconsidering species doubling of naive fermions on the lattices whose topologies are torus ($T^{D}$), hyperball ($B^D$) and their direct-product space ($T^{D} \times B^{d}$). We find that the maximal number of species is in exact agreement with the sum of Betti numbers $\sum^{D}_{r=0} β_{r}$ for these manifolds. Indeed, the $4D$ lattice fermion on torus has up to $16$ species while the sum of Betti numbers of $T^4$ is $16$. This coincidence holds also for the $D$-dimensional hyperball and their direct-product space $T^{D} \times B^{d}$. We study several examples of lattice fermions defined on discretized hypersphere ($S^{D}$), and find that it has up to $2$ species, which is the same number as the sum of Betti numbers of $S^{D}$. From these facts, we conjecture the equivalence of the maximal number of fermion species and the summation of Betti numbers. We discuss a program for proof of the conjecture in terms of Hodge theory and spectral graph theory.

Exact-WKB analysis for SUSY and quantum deformed potentials: Quantum mechanics with Grassmann fields and Wess-Zumino terms

Quantum deformed potentials arise naturally in quantum mechanical systems of one bosonic coordinate coupled to $N_f$ Grassmann valued fermionic coordinates, or to a topological Wess-Zumino term. These systems decompose into sectors with a classical potential plus a quantum deformation. Using exact WKB, we derive exact quantization condition and its median resummation. The solution of median resummed form gives physical Borel-Ecalle resummed results, as we show explicitly in quantum deformed double- and triple- well potentials. Despite the fact that instantons are finite action, for generic quantum deformation, they do not contribute to the energy spectrum at leading order in semi-classics. For certain quantized quantum deformations, where the alignment of levels to all order in perturbation theory occurs, instantons contribute to the spectrum. If deformation parameter is not properly quantized, their effect disappears, but higher order effects in semi-classics survive. In this sense, we classify saddle contributions as fading and robust. Finally, for quantum deformed triple-well potential, we demonstrate the P-NP relation, by computing period integrals and Mellin transform.

All-order Resurgence from Complexified Path Integral in a Quantum Mechanical System with Integrability

We discuss all-order transseries in one of the simplest quantum mechanical systems: a U(1) symmetric single-degree-of-freedom system with a first-order time derivative term. Following the procedure of the Lefschetz thimble method, we explicitly evaluate the path integral for the generating function of the Noether charge and derive its exact transseries expression. Using the conservation law, we find all the complex saddle points of the action, which are responsible for the non-perturbative effects and the resurgence structure of the model. The all-order power-series contributions around each saddle point are generated from the one-loop determinant with the help of the differential equations obeyed by the generating function. The transseries are constructed by summing up the contributions from all the relevant saddle points, which we identify by determining the intersection numbers between the dual thimbles and the original path integration contour. We confirm that the Borel ambiguities of the perturbation series are canceled by the non-perturbative ambiguities originating from the discontinuous jumps of the intersection numbers. The transseries computed in the path-integral formalism agrees with the exact generating function, whose explicit form can be obtained in the operator formalism thanks to the integrable nature of the model. This agreement indicates the non-perturbative completeness of the transseries obtained by the semi-classical expansion of the path integral based on the Lefschetz thimble method.

Lattice fermions as spectral graphs

We study lattice fermions from the viewpoint of spectral graph theory (SGT). We find that a fermion defined on a certain lattice is identified as a spectral graph. SGT helps us investigate the number of zero eigenvalues of lattice Dirac operators even on the non-torus and non-regular lattice, leading to understanding of the number of fermion species (doublers) on lattices with arbitrary topologies. The procedure of application of SGT to lattice fermions is summarized as follows: (1) One investigates a spectral graph corresponding to a lattice fermion. (2) One obtains a matrix corresponding to the graph. (3) One finds zero eigenvalues of the matrix by use of the discrete Fourier transformation (DFT). (4) By taking an infinite-volume and continuum limits, one finds the number of species. We apply this procedure to the known lattice fermion formulations including Naive fermions, Wilson fermions and Domain-wall fermions, and reproduce the known fact on the number of species. We also apply it to the lattice fermion on the discretized four-dimensional hyperball and discuss the number of fermion species on the bulk. In the end of the paper, we discuss the application of the analysis to lattice fermions on generic lattices with arbitrary topologies, which could lead to constructing a new theorem regarding the number of species.
