Warped Black Holes in Lower-Spin Gravity

We provide a simple holographic description for a warped conformal field theory (WCFT) at finite temperature. To this end we study the counterpart of warped anti-de Sitter black holes in three dimensions using a lower-spin $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})\oplus\mathfrak{u}(1)$ Chern-Simons theory proposed by Hofman and Rollier. We determine the asymptotic symmetries, thermal entropy and holographic entanglement entropy and show that all these quantities are in perfect agreement with the expectations from the dual WCFT perspective. In addition we provide a metric interpretation of our results which naturally fits with our analysis in the Chern-Simons formulation.

Phase Diagram of Planar Matrix Quantum Mechanics, Tensor, and Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Models

We compute the phase diagram of a $\text{U}(N)^{2}\times\text{O}(D)$ invariant fermionic planar matrix quantum mechanics [equivalently tensor or complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models] in the new large $D$ limit, dominated by melonic graphs. The Schwinger-Dyson equations can have two solutions describing either a high entropy, SYK black-hole-like phase, or a low entropy one with trivial IR behavior. In the strongly coupled region of the mass-temperature plane, there is a line of first order phase transitions between the high and low entropy phases. This line terminates at a new critical point which we study numerically in detail. The critical exponents are nonmean field and differ on the two sides of the transition. We also study purely bosonic unstable and stable melonic models. The former has a line of Kazakov critical points beyond which the Schwinger-Dyson equations do not have a consistent solution. Moreover, in both models the would-be SYK-like solution of the IR limit of the equations does not exist in the full theory.

More on the New Large $D$ Limit of Matrix Models

In this paper, we extend the recent analysis of the new large $D$ limit of matrix models to the cases where the action contains arbitrary multi-trace interaction terms as well as to arbitrary correlation functions. We discuss both the cases of complex and Hermitian matrices, with $\text{U}(N)^{2}\times\text{O}(D)$ and $\text{U}(N)\times\text{O}(D)$ symmetries respectively. In the latter case, the new large $D$ limit is consistent for planar diagrams; at higher genera, it crucially requires the tracelessness condition. For similar reasons, the large $N$ limit of tensor models with reduced symmetries is typically inconsistent already at leading order without the tracelessness condition. We also further discuss some interesting properties of purely bosonic models pointed out recently and explain that the standard argument predicting a non-trivial IR behaviour in fermionic models à la SYK does not work for bosonic models. Finally, we explain that the new large $D$ scaling is consistent with linearly realized supersymmetry.

Holographic Entanglement for Chern-Simons Terms

We derive the holographic entanglement entropy contribution from pure and mixed gravitational Chern-Simons(CS) terms in AdS$_{2k+1}$. This is done through two different methods : first, by a direct evaluation of CS action in a holographic replica geometry and second by a descent of Dong's derivation applied to the corresponding anomaly polynomial. In lower dimensions $(k=1,2)$, the formula coincides with the Wald-Tachikawa formula for black hole entropy from gravitational CS terms. New extrinsic curvature corrections appear for $k\geq 3$ : we give explicit and concise expressions for the two pure gravitational CS terms in AdS$_7$ and present various consistency checks, including agreements with the black hole entropy formula when evaluated at the bifurcation surface.

Anomalies, Chern-Simons Terms and Black Hole Entropy

Recent derivations of Cardy-like formulae in higher dimensional field theories have opened up a way of computing, via AdS/CFT, universal contributions to black hole entropy from gravitational Chern-Simons terms. Based on the manifestly covariant formulation of the differential Noether charge for Chern-Simons terms proposed in arXiv:1407.6364, we compute the entropy and asymptotic charges for the rotating charged AdS black holes in higher dimensions at leading order of the fluid/gravity derivative expansion in the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons system. This gives a result that exactly matches the field theory predictions from Cardy-like formulae.

Covariant Noether Charge for Higher Dimensional Chern-Simons Terms

We construct a manifestly covariant differential Noether charge for theories with Chern-Simons terms in higher dimensional spacetimes. This is in contrast to Tachikawa's extension of the standard Lee-Iyer-Wald formalism which results in a non-covariant differential Noether charge for Chern-Simons terms. On a bifurcation surface, our differential Noether charge integrates to the Wald-like entropy formula proposed by Tachikawa in arXiv:hep-th/0611141.

Holographic Thermal Helicity

We study the thermal helicity, defined in arXiv:1211.3850, of a conformal field theory with anomalies in the context of AdS$_{2n+1}$/CFT$_{2n}$. To do so, we consider large charged rotating AdS black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with a negative cosmological constant using fluid/gravity expansion. We compute the anomaly-induced current and stress tensor of the dual CFT in leading order of the fluid/gravity derivative expansion and show their agreement with the field theoretical replacement rule for the thermal helicity. Such replacement rule is reflected in the bulk by new replacement rules obeyed by the Hall currents around the black hole.

A new look at instantons and large-N limit

We analyze instantons in the very strongly coupled large-$N$ limit ($N\to\infty$ with $g^2$ fixed) of large-$N$ gauge theories, where the effect of the instantons remains finite. By using the exact partition function of four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2^*$ gauge theories as a concrete example, we demonstrate that each instanton sector in the very strongly coupled large-$N$ limit is related to the one in the 't Hooft limit ($N\to\infty$ with $g^2N$ fixed) through a simple analytic continuation. Furthermore we show the equivalence between the instanton partition functions of a pair of large-$N$ gauge theories related by an orbifold projection. This can open up a new way to analyze the partition functions of low/non-supersymmetric theories. We also discuss implication of our result to gauge/gravity dualities for M-theory as well as a possible application to large-$N$ QCD.

From the planar limit to M-theory

The large-N limit of gauge theories has been playing a crucial role in theoretical physics over the decades. Despite its importance, little is known outside the planar limit where the 't Hooft coupling $λ=g_{YM}^2N$ is fixed. In this Letter we consider more general large-N limit --- $λ$ grows with N, e.g., $g_{YM}^2$ is fixed. Such a limit is important particularly in recent attempts to find the nonpertubative formulation of M-theory. Based on various supporting evidence, we propose this limit is essentially identical to the planar limit, in the sense the order of the large-N limit and the strong coupling limit commute. For a wide class of large-N gauge theories, these two limits are smoothly connected, and the analytic continuation from the planar limit is justified. As simple examples, we reproduce a few properties of the six-dimensional N=(2, 0) theory on S^1 from the five-dimensional maximal super Yang-Mills theory, supporting the recent conjecture by Douglas and Lambert et al. that these two theories are identical.

Runaway, D term and R-symmetry Breaking

We study the D-term effect on runaway directions of the F-term scalar potential. A minimal renormalizable model is presented where supersymmetry is broken without any pseudomoduli. The model is applied to the hidden sector of gauge mediation for spontaneously breaking R symmetry and generating nonvanishing gaugino masses at the one-loop order.

The Spectrum of Strings on Warped AdS_3 x S^3

String theory on NS-NS AdS_3 x S^3 admits an exactly marginal deformation which breaks the SL(2,R)_R x SL(2,R)_L isometry of AdS_3 down to SL(2,R)_R x U(1)_L. The holographic dual is an exotic and only partially understood type of two-dimensional CFT with a reduced unbroken global conformal symmetry group. In this paper we study the deformed theory on the string worldsheet. It is found to be related by a spectral flow which is nonlocal in spacetime to the undeformed worldsheet theory. An exact formula for the spectrum of massive strings is presented.

D term and gaugino masses in gauge mediation

We systematically study supersymmetry breaking with non-vanishing F and D terms. We classify the models into two categories and find that a certain class of models necessarily has runaway behavior of scalar potential, while the other needs the Fayet-Iliopoulos term to break supersymmetry. The latter class is useful to have a simple model of gauge mediation where the vacuum is stable everywhere and the gaugino mass is generated at the one-loop order.

Emergent AdS_3 in the Zero Entropy Extremal Black Holes

We investigate the zero entropy limit of the near horizon geometries of D=4 and D=5 general extremal black holes with SL(2,R)xU(1)^{D-3} symmetry. We derive some conditions on the geometries from expectation of regularity. We then show that an AdS_3 structure emerges in a certain scaling limit, though the periodicity shrinks to zero. We present some examples to see the above concretely. We also comment on some implications to the Kerr/CFT correspondence.

On Non-Chiral Extension of Kerr/CFT

We discuss possible non-chiral extension of the Kerr/CFT correspondence. We first consider the near horizon geometry of an extremal BTZ black hole and study the asymptotic symmetry. In order to define it properly, we introduce a regularization and show that the asymptotic symmetry becomes the desirable non-chiral Virasoro symmetry with the same central charges for both left and right sectors, which are independent of the regularization parameter. We then investigate the non-chiral extension for general extremal black holes in the zero entropy limit. Since the same geometric structure as above emerges in this limit, we identify non-chiral Virasoro symmetry by a similar procedure. This observation supports the existence of a hidden non-chiral CFT_2 structure with the same central charges for both left and right sectors dual to the rotating black holes.

Large-N reduction in QCD-like theories with massive adjoint fermions

Large-N QCD with heavy adjoint fermions emulates pure Yang-Mills theory at long distances. We study this theory on a four- and three-torus, and analytically argue the existence of a large-small volume equivalence. For any finite mass, center symmetry unbroken phase exists at sufficiently small volume and this phase can be used to study the large-volume limit through the Eguchi-Kawai equivalence. A finite temperature version of volume independence implies that thermodynamics on R^3 x S^1 can be studied via a unitary matrix quantum mechanics on S^1, by varying the temperature. To confirm this non-perturbatively, we numerically study both zero- and one-dimensional theories by using Monte-Carlo simulation. Order of finite-N corrections turns out to be 1/N. We introduce various twisted versions of the reduced QCD which systematically suppress finite-N corrections. Using a twisted model, we observe the confinement/deconfinement transition on a 1^3 x 2-lattice. The result agrees with large volume simulations of Yang-Mills theory. We also comment that the twisted model can serve as a non-perturbative formulation of the non-commutative Yang-Mills theory.

Universal description of viscoelasticity with foliation preserving diffeomorphisms

We review our recent proposal for a universal description of generic single-component viscoelastic systems with a single relaxation time. Foliation preserving diffeomorphisms are introduced as an underlying symmetry which naturally interpolates between the two extreme characters of elasticity and fluidity. The symmetry is found to be powerful enough to determine the dynamics in the first order of strains.

The Kerr/CFT Correspondence and String Theory

The Kerr/CFT correspondence is a holographic duality between a two dimensional chiral conformal field theory (CFT) and the very near horizon limit of an extremal black hole, which includes an AdS2 structure. To understand the dual chiral CFT2, we apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence to a certain class of black holes embedded in string theory, which include the D1-D5-P and the BMPV black holes, and obtain the correct entropies for the black holes microscopically. These have an AdS3 structure in the near horizon geometry and an AdS2 structure in the very near horizon geometry. We identified one of the two Virasoro symmetries in the nonchiral CFT2 dual to the AdS3, i.e. in the AdS3/CFT2, with the Virasoro symmetry in the chiral CFT2 dual to the AdS2, i.e. in the Kerr/CFT correspondence. We also discuss a way to understand the chiral CFT2 dual to generic extremal black holes. A kind of universality for the very near horizon geometries of extremal black holes will be important for the validity of the Kerr/CFT correspondence. Based on this analysis, we propose that the Kerr/CFT correspondence can be understood as a decoupling limit in which only the ground states remain.
