Magnetic order and excitations in the magnetically intercalated van der Waals material Cr$_{\frac{1}{4}}$NbSe$_2$

Cr$_{\frac{1}{4}}$NbSe$_2$ is a triangular lattice magnet in which magnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions are intercalated to form triangular lattices between NbSe$_2$ van der Waals layers stacked along the c axis. By unpolarized and polarized neutron scattering experiments, we have revealed that the magnetic ground state of this system is a 120$^{\circ}$-type antiferromagnetic order characterized by the magnetic propagation wave vector of $q=(\frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{3}, 0)$. We also performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements using co-aligned single crystals, and determined dispersion relations of magnetic excitations at low temperatures. Comparing the observed spectra with calculations based on the linear spin-wave theory, we revealed that the out-of-plane ferromagnetic interaction is fairly strong as compared to the in-plane nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction. Although the crystal structure of this system is composed of two-dimensional van der Waals layers, the magnetic order has a three dimensional character, which would be attributed to long-range magnetic interactions mediated by conduction electrons.

Error evaluation of partial scattering functions obtained from contrast variation small-angle neutron scattering

Contrast variation small-angle neutron scattering (CV-SANS) is a powerful tool to evaluate the structure of multi-component systems by decomposing scattering intensities $I$ measured with different scattering contrasts into partial scattering functions $S$ of self- and cross-correlations between components. The measured $I$ contains a measurement error, $ΔI$, and $ΔI$ results in an uncertainty of partial scattering functions, $ΔS$. However, the error propagation from $ΔI$ to $ΔS$ has not been quantitatively clarified. In this work, we have established deterministic and statistical approaches to determine $ΔS$ from $ΔI$. We have applied the two methods to (i) computational data of a core-shell sphere and experimental CV-SANS data of (ii) clay/polyethylene glycol (PEG) aqueous solutions and (iii) polyrotaxane solutions, and have successfully estimated the errors of \(S\). The quantitative error estimation of \(S\) offers us a strategy to optimize the combination of scattering contrasts to minimize error propagation.

Direct observations of spin fluctuations in spin-hedgehog-anti-hedgehog lattice states in MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ ($x=0.6$ and $0.8$) at zero magnetic field

The helimagnetic compounds MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$ show the three-dimensional multiple-$q$ order as referred to as spin-hedgehog-anti-hedgehog (SHAH) lattice. Two representative forms of SHAH are cubic-3$q$ lattice with $q \| \langle100\rangle$ and tetrahedral-4$q$ lattice with $q \| \langle111\rangle$, which show up typically for $x=1.0-~0.8$ and for $x=0.6$, respectively. Here, we have investigated the spin fluctuations in the MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$ polycrystalline samples with $x=0.6$ and $0.8$ by using the time-of-flight (TOF) neutron inelastic scattering and MIEZE-type neutron spin echo techniques to elucidate the microscopic origin of the unconventional Hall effect in the SHAH lattice states. This research is motivated by the observation of a sign change in the unconventional Hall resistivity as a function of temperature [Y. Fujishiro et al., Nat. Comm. $\textbf{10}$, 1059 (2019)]. The present results reveal the correspondences between the temperature ranges where the positive Hall resistivity and spin fluctuations are observed. These results agree well with the theoretical model of the conduction electrons scattered by the fluctuating spin clusters with a non-zero average of sign-biased scalar spin chirality as a mechanism of the positive Hall resistivity [H. Ishizuka and N. Nagaosa, Sci. Adv. $\textbf{4}$, eaap9962 (2018)].
