Symmetry Breaking in Bose-Einstein Condensates

A gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) offers an ideal testing ground for studying symmetry breaking, because a trapped BEC system is in a mesoscopic regime, and situations exist under which symmetry breaking may or may not occur. Investigating this problem can explain why mean-field theories have been so successful in elucidating gaseous BEC systems and when many-body effects play a significant role. We substantiate these ideas in four distinct situations: namely, soliton formation in attractive BECs, vortex nucleation in rotating BECs, spontaneous magnetization in spinor BECs, and spin texture formation in dipolar BECs.

Nambu-Goldstone Mode in a Rotating Dilute Bose-Einstein Condensate

The Nambu-Goldstone mode, associated with vortex nucleation in a harmonically confined, two-dimensional dilute Bose-Einstein condensate, is identified with the lowest-lying envelope of octupole-mode branches, which are separated from each other by the admixture of quadrupolar excitations. As the vortex approaches the center of the condensate and the system's axisymmetry is restored, the Nambu-Goldstone mode becomes massive due to its coupling to higher rotational bands.

Quantum Monte-Carlo method without negative-sign problem for two-dimensional electron systems under strong magnetic fields

The quantum Monte-Carlo method is applied to two-dimensional electron systems under strong magnetic fields. The negative-sign problem involved by this method can be avoided for certain filling factors by modifying interaction parameters from those of the Coulomb interaction. Our techniques for obtaining sign-problem-free parameters are described in detail. Calculated results on static observables are also reported for Landau level filling $ν= 1/3$.

Formulation and Application of Quantum Monte Carlo Method to Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

Quantum Monte Carlo method is applied to fractional quantum Hall systems. The use of the linear programming method enables us to avoid the negative-sign problem in the Quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The formulation of this method and the technique for avoiding the sign problem are described. Some numerical results on static physical quantities are also reported.

Energy gaps and roton structure above the nu=1/2 Laughlin state of a rotating dilute Bose-Einstein condensate

Exact diagonalization study of a rotating dilute Bose-Einstein condensate reveals that as the first vortex enters the system the degeneracy of the low-energy yrast spectrum is lifted and a large energy gap emerges. As more vortices enter with faster rotation, the energy gap decreases towards zero, but eventually the spectrum exhibits a rotonlike structure above the nu=1/2 Laughlin state without having a phonon branch despite the short-range nature of the interaction.

Excitation spectrum of Bilayer $ν=2$ Quantum Hall Systems

Excitation spectra in bilayer quantum Hall systems at total Landau-level filling $ν=2$ are studied by the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation. The systems have the spin degrees of freedom in addition to the layer degrees of freedom described in terms of pseudospin. On the excitation spectra from spin-unpolarized and pseudospin-polarized ground state, this approximation fully preserves the spin rotational symmetry and thus can give not only spin-triplet but also spin-singlet excitations systematically. It is also found that the ground-state properties are well described by this approximation.

Operator-Algebraic Approach to the Yrast Spectrum of Weakly Interacting Trapped Bosons

We present an operator-algebraic approach to deriving the low-lying quasi-degenerate spectrum of weakly interacting trapped N bosons with total angular momentum \hbar L for the case of small L/N, demonstrating that the lowest-lying excitation spectrum is given by 27 g n_3(n_3-1)/34, where g is the strength of the repulsive contact interaction and n_3 the number of excited octupole quanta. Our method provides constraints for these quasi-degenerate many-body states and gives higher excitation energies that depend linearly on N.

Dynamical Properties in the Bilayer Quantum Hall Ferromagnet

The spectral functions of the pseudospin correlation functions in the bilayer quantum Hall system at ν=1 are investigated numerically, where the pseudospin describes the layer degrees of freedom. In the pseudospin-ferromagnetic phase, the lowest-energy excitation branch is closely connected with the ground state through the fluctuations of pseudospin S_y and S_z, and it plays a significant role on the tunneling properties in this system. For the system with very small tunneling amplitude and layer separation smaller than the critical one, the system-size dependence of calculated spectral function A_{y z} suggests the superfluidity on the tunneling current in the absence of impurities.

Low-Lying Excitations from the Yrast Line of Weakly Interacting Trapped Bosons

Through an extensive numerical study, we find that the low-lying, quasi-degenerate eigenenergies of weakly-interacting trapped N bosons with total angular momentum L are given in case of small L/N and sufficiently small L by E = L hbar omega + g[N(N-L/2-1)+1.59 n(n-1)/2], where omega is the frequency of the trapping potential and g is the strength of the repulsive contact interaction; the last term arises from the pairwise repulsive interaction among n octupole excitations and describes the lowest-lying excitation spectra from the Yrast line. In this case, the quadrupole modes do not interact with themselves and, together with the octupole modes, exhaust the low-lying spectra which are separated from others by N-linear energy gaps.

Interaction-induced localization-delocalization transition in the double-layer quantum Hall system

We report on numerical studies of the energy spectrum and the localization properties in the double-layer quantum Hall system at $ν= 1$. The Coulomb interaction is treated by the Hartree-Fock approximation, and the localization properties in the presence of disorder are studied by evaluating participation ratios for the Hartree-Fock eigenfunctions. We show that the extended states seem to exist only near each center of the two subbands split by the exchange-enhanced energy gap. It is also shown that the self-consistent orbitals whose energies are close to the Fermi energy appear to become extended together with the reduction in the energy gap as the layer separation increases. The collapse of the energy gap expected from our results is consistent with the incompressible-compressible transition observed in recent experiments, and the change of the localization properties near the Fermi energy can explain the disappearance of the quantum Hall effect for large layer separations very well.
