The Conway polynomials and Self Delta-equivalence of pretzel links

In this paper, we study the self delta-equivalence of pretzel links. If the number of components is 2, then we know the complete invariants in terms of the Conway polynomial for classification. We calculate the values. For pretzel links with more than or equal to 3 components, we give a necessary and sufficient condition to be self delta-equivalent.

Alexander polynomials of simple-ribbon knots

In a previous paper, we introduced special types of fusions, so called simple-ribbon fusions on links. A knot obtained from the trivial knot by a finite sequence of simple-ribbon fusions is called a simple-ribbon knot. Every ribbon knot with <10 crossings is a simple-ribbon knot. In this paper, we give a formula for the Alexander polynomials of simple-ribbon knots. Using the formula, we determine if a knot with 10 crossings is a simple-ribbon knot. Every simple-ribbon fusion can be realized by ``elementary" simple-ribbon fusions. We call a knot a p-simple-ribbon knot if the knot is obtained from the trivial knot by a finite sequence of elementary p-simple-ribbon fusions for a fixed positive integer p. We provide a condition for a simple-ribbon knot to be both of an m-simple-ribbon knot and an n-simple-ribbon knot for positive integers m and n.

Homotopy, Delta-equivalence and concordance for knots in the complement of a trivial link

Link-homotopy and self Delta-equivalence are equivalence relations on links. It was shown by J. Milnor (resp. the last author) that Milnor invariants determine whether or not a link is link-homotopic (resp. self Delta-equivalent) to a trivial link. We study link-homotopy and self Delta-equivalence on a certain component of a link with fixing the rest components, in other words, homotopy and Delta-equivalence of knots in the complement of a certain link. We show that Milnor invariants determine whether a knot in the complement of a trivial link is null-homotopic, and give a sufficient condition for such a knot to be Delta-equivalent to the trivial knot. We also give a sufficient condition for knots in the complements of the trivial knot to be equivalent up to Delta-equivalence and concordance.

The almost alternating diagrams of the trivial knot

Bankwitz characterized an alternating diagram representing the trivial knot. A non-alternating diagram is called almost alternating if one crossing change makes the diagram alternating. We characterize an almost alternaing diagram representing the trivial knot. As a corollary we determine an unknotting number one alternating knot with a property that the unknotting operation can be done on its alternating diagram.

A factorization of the Conway polynomial and covering linkage invariants

J.P. Levine showed that the Conway polynomial of a link is a product of two factors: one is the Conway polynomial of a knot which is obtained from the link by banding together the components; and the other is determined by the $\barμ$-invariants of a string link with the link as its closure. We give another description of the latter factor: the determinant of a matrix whose entries are linking pairings in the infinite cyclic covering space of the knot complement, which take values in the quotient field of ${\Bbb Z}[t,t^{-1}]$. In addition, we give a relation between the Taylor expansion of a linking pairing around $t=1$ and derivation on links which is invented by T.D. Cochran. In fact, the coefficients of the powers of $t-1$ will be the linking numbers of certain derived links in $S^3$. Therefore, the first non-vanishing coefficient of the Conway polynomial is determined by the linking numbers in $S^3$. This generalizes a result of J. Hoste.

The fourth skein module and the Montesinos-Nakanishi conjecture for 3-algebraic links

We study the concept of the fourth skein module of 3-manifolds, that is a skein module based on the skein relation b_0L_0 + b_1L_1 + b_2L_2 + b_3L_3 = 0 and a framing relation L^{(1)} = aL, where a, b_0, b_3 are invertible. We introdule the concept of n-algebraic tangles (and links) and analyze the skein module for 3-algebraic links. As a byproduct we prove the Montesinos-Nakanishi 3-move conjecture for 3-algebraic links (including 3-bridge links).

A criterion for almost alternating links to be non-splittable

We give a sufficient condition for an almost alternating link diagram to represent a non-splittable link. The main theorem gives us a way to see if a given almost alternating link diagram represents a splittable link without increasing numbers of crossings of diagrams in the process. Moreover, we show that almost alternating links with more than two components are non-trivial.
