Transition Dynamics in General Two-Component Reaction-Diffusion Systems

This work provides a comprehensive characterization of the first dynamic transition of a general two-component reaction-diffusion system on a bounded interval in one spatial dimension. By rigorously addressing the difficulties arising from the non-linear interactions between the two components, this study significantly extends the scope of previous studies on dynamic transitions of reaction-diffusion systems, which focused on single-equation cases. The analysis is conducted by employing center manifold reduction within the standard classification of dynamic transition theory. A key contribution of this study is that the nonlinear terms are treated to involve arbitrary powers of the unknowns $u$ and $v$. Furthermore, the theoretical framework is complemented by the analysis of a representative and simplified system. As a result of this generalization, the dynamics of a broad class of fundamental reaction-diffusion systems can be systematically classified.

Variational Nonlinearities and Wave Selection at an $O(2)$-Hopf Bifurcation

At an $O(2)$-equivariant Hopf bifurcation, the real parts $ζ_R$ and $ξ_R$ of the two cubic normal-form coefficients govern selection between traveling and standing waves. In a fourth-order regularized $p$-system, $ξ_R$ was observed to vanish and the cubic nonlinearity to shift only frequencies. We show that both observations are structural: variational nonlinearities enforce them even when the linear part is dissipative and non-Hamiltonian. We consider a class of two-component PDEs on the circle whose quadratic and cubic nonlinearities are generated by reflection-invariant local Hamiltonians of the fields and finitely many of their spatial derivatives, through a common constant-coefficient Poisson operator. Then $ξ_R=0$ for every admissible linear part, while $ζ_R$ depends only on the quadratic nonlinearity. For variational nonlinearities the direct cubic terms are purely imaginary. The mixed cascade term loses its real part because its second harmonic has zero temporal frequency and the resolvent keeps its parity, while the self-cascade at the doubled critical frequency keeps a real part. When $ζ_R\ne0$, the bifurcating traveling waves are saddles, while the standing waves are supercritical and orbitally asymptotically stable for $ζ_R<0$ and subcritical and unstable for $ζ_R>0$. When the nonlinearities are the Poisson operator applied to polynomials in the fields alone, and its symbol does not vanish at the critical and second-harmonic wavenumbers, cancellation for every admissible linear part conversely characterizes variationality. In a dissipatively regularized Boussinesq family, as dissipation tends to zero, $ζ_R$ vanishes linearly off resonance and diverges inversely at the 2:1 resonance. The Hamiltonian limit of the cubic coefficient is therefore singular.

Delay Placement Governs Feasibility and Hopf Bifurcation in a Pollution-Based Tourism Model

We compare eight variants of a three-variable pollution-based tourism model obtained by assigning the same discrete delay to different terms. The delay may enter three slots: the visitor factor in the deterrence term, pollution perception, or visitation-driven growth and reinvestment. We call a placement feasible when every nonnegative initial history produces a solution that exists for all future time and remains nonnegative. For every $τ>0$, feasibility holds exactly when the visitor factor in the deterrence term is current, which occurs in four of the eight placements. In three of these four feasible placements, the positive equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable for every delay. In the fourth -- the perception-lag model, with delayed pollution perception but current visitation -- a conjugate pair of characteristic roots crosses the imaginary axis at a finite critical delay for every set of positive parameters. The equilibrium then loses stability and does not restabilise as the delay increases. A center-manifold reduction and numerical parameter sweep show that both supercritical and subcritical Hopf bifurcations can occur. The visitor-delayed placement, closest to earlier delayed-tourism models, can undergo a local Hopf bifurcation under additional conditions, but it does not preserve nonnegativity for all initial histories.

Wave Selection at an $O(2)$-Hopf Bifurcation in Conservative Two-Component PDE Systems

At an $O(2)$-equivariant Hopf bifurcation a spatially periodic system selects between traveling waves and standing waves, and which branch appears and whether it is stable is decided by two cubic normal form coefficients. Obtaining these coefficients for a given PDE has required a derivation carried out afresh for each model. We remove that step for two-component systems with conservative polynomial differential nonlinearities on a one-dimensional periodic domain, deriving closed form formulas for both coefficients. They are expressed directly in terms of the array of nonlinear PDE coefficients and the spectral data of the linearization, its critical eigenvectors, adjoint eigenvectors, and non-critical resolvents. We give verifiable conditions under which the underlying center manifold reduction is valid: a structural condition on the principal part of the linearization that yields the required resolvent estimate, and a condition on the Fourier symbol that we show is equivalent to the required spectral gap. In contrast to the model specific computations available previously, the resulting formulas apply to any system in the class without further derivation. A companion implementation evaluates the two normal form coefficients from the coefficient array and verifies the assumptions for a given system. We specialize the formulas to two applications: a strain-gradient regularization of the nonlinear $p$-system, whose quadratic case contains a previously studied model as a special case, and a first order conservative bilinear family, not previously analyzed, in which every bifurcation scenario allowed by the general classification is realized.

Transitions of zonal flows in a two-layer quasi-geostrophic ocean model

We consider a 2-layer quasi-geostrophic ocean model where the upper layer is forced by a steady Kolmogorov wind stress in a periodic channel domain, which allows to mathematically study the nonlinear development of the resulting flow. The model supports a steady parallel shear flow as a response to the wind stress. As the maximal velocity of the shear flow (equivalently the maximal amplitude of the wind forcing) exceeds a critical threshold, the zonal jet destabilizes due to baroclinic instability and we numerically demonstrate that a first transition occurs. We obtain reduced equations of the system using the formalism of dynamic transition theory and establish two scenarios which completely describe this first transition. The generic scenario is that two modes become critical and a Hopf bifurcation occurs as a result. Under an appropriate set of parameters describing midlatitude oceanic flows, we show that this first transition is continuous: a supercritical Hopf bifurcation occurs and a stable time periodic solution bifurcates. We also investigate the case of double Hopf bifurcations which occur when four modes of the linear stability problem simultaneously destabilize the zonal jet. In this case we prove that, in the relevant parameter regime, the flow exhibits a continuous transition accompanied by a bifurcated attractor homeomorphic to $S^3$. The topological structure of this attractor is analyzed in detail and is shown to depend on the system parameters. In particular, this attractor contains (stable or unstable) time-periodic solutions and a quasi-periodic solution.

Dynamical Transition Theory of Hexagonal Pattern Formations

The main goal of this paper is to understand the formation of hexagonal patterns from the dynamical transition theory point of view. We consider the transitions from a steady state of an abstract nonlinear dissipative system. To shed light on the formation of mixed mode patterns such as the hexagonal pattern, we consider the case where the linearized operator of the system has two critical real eigenvalues, at a critical value $λ_c$ of a control parameter $λ$ with associated eigenmodes having a roll and rectangular pattern. By using center manifold reduction, we obtain the reduced equations of the system near the critical transition value $λ_c$. By a through analysis of these equations, we fully characterize all possible transition scenarios when the coefficients of the quadratic part of the reduced equations do not vanish. We consider three problems, two variants of the 2D Swift-Hohenberg equation and the 3D surface tension driven convection, to demonstrate that all the main theoretical results we obtain here are indeed realizable.

Dynamic Transitions and Baroclinic Instability for 3D Continuously Stratified Boussinesq Flows

The main objective of this article is to study the nonlinear stability and dynamic transitions of the basic (zonal) shear flows for the three-dimensional continuously stratified rotating Boussinesq model. The model equations are fundamental equations in geophysical fluid dynamics, and dynamics associated with their basic zonal shear flows play a crucial role in understanding many important geophysical fluid dynamical processes, such as the meridional overturning oceanic circulation and the geophysical baroclinic instability. In this paper, first we derive a threshold for the energy stability of the basic shear flow, and obtain a criteria for nonlinear stability in terms of the critical horizontal wavenumbers and the system parameters such as the Froude number, the Rossby number, the Prandtl number and the strength of the shear flow. Next we demonstrate that the system always undergoes a dynamic transition from the basic shear flow to either a spatiotemporal oscillatory pattern or circle of steady states, as the shear strength $Λ$ of the basic flow crosses a critical threshold $Λ_c$. Also we show that the dynamic transition can be either continuous or catastrophic, and is dictated by the sign of a transition parameter $A$, fully characterizing the nonlinear interactions of different modes. A systematic numerical method is carried out to explore transition in different flow parameter regimes. We find that the system admits only critical eigenmodes with horizontal wave indices $(0,m_y)$. Such modes, horizontally have the pattern consisting of $m_y$-rolls aligned with the x-axis. Furthermore, numerically we encountered continuous transitions to multiple steady states, continuous and catastrophic transitions to spatiotemporal oscillations.

Interior Structural Bifurcation of 2D Symmetric Incompressible Flows

The structural bifurcation of a 2D divergence free vector field $\mathbf{u}(\cdot, t)$ when $\mathbf{u}(\cdot, t_0)$ has an interior isolated singular point $\mathbf{x}_0$ of zero index has been studied by Ma and Wang. Although in the class of divergence free fields which undergo a local bifurcation around a singular point, the ones with index zero singular points are generic, this class excludes some important families of symmetric flows. In particular, when $\mathbf{u}(\cdot, t_0)$ is anti-symmetric with respect to $\mathbf{x}_0$, or symmetric with respect to the axis located on $\mathbf{x}_0$ and normal to the unique eigendirection of the Jacobian $D\mathbf{u}(\cdot, t_0)$, the vector field must have index 1 or -1 at the singular point. Thus we study the structural bifurcation when $\mathbf{u}(\cdot, t_0)$ has an interior isolated singular point $\mathbf{x}_0$ with index -1, 1. In particular we show that if such a vector field with its acceleration at $t_0$ both satisfy aforementioned symmetries then generically the flow will undergo a local bifurcation. Under these generic conditions, we rigorously prove the existence of flow patterns such as pairs of co-rotating vortices and double saddle connections. We also present numerical evidence of Stokes flow in a rectangular and cylindrical cavity showing that the bifurcation scenarios we present are indeed realizable.

Transitions of Spherical Thermohaline Circulation to Multiple Equilibria

The main aim of the paper is to investigate the transitions of the thermohaline circulation in a spherical shell in a parameter regime which only allows transitions to multiple equilibria. We find that the first transition is either continuous (Type-I) or drastic (Type-II) depending on the sign of the transition number. The transition number depends on the system parameters and $l_c$, which is the common degree of spherical harmonics of the first critical eigenmodes, and it can be written as a sum of terms describing the nonlinear interactions of various modes with the critical modes. We obtain the exact formulas of this transition number for $l_c=1$ and $l_c=2$ cases. Numerically, we find that the main contribution to the transition number is due to nonlinear interactions with modes having zero wave number and the contribution from the nonlinear interactions with higher frequency modes is negligible. In our numerical experiments we encountered both types of transition for $Le<1$ but only continuous transition for $Le>1$. In the continuous transition scenario, we rigorously prove that an attractor in the phase space bifurcates which is homeomorphic to the 2$l_c$ dimensional sphere and consists entirely of degenerate steady state solutions.

Dynamic Transition for Magnetohydrodynamic Convection

Main objective of this paper is to describe the dynamic transition of the incompressible MHD equations in a rectangular domain in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. Our analysis shows that the system undergoes a first dynamic transition either to multiple equilibria or to periodic solutions. In the case of transition to multiple equilibria, the transition is a type-I (continuous) transition. In the case of transition to periodic solutions, the transition can be either type-I or type-II (jump).
