On homological Real trace methods

We develop homological Real trace methods, an approach to understanding the continuous mod two Bredon homology of Real topological periodic homology and Real topological negative cyclic homology, generalizing prior work of Bruner and Rognes. We use this new approach to do several computations, including the continuous mod two Bredon homology of the Real topological negative cyclic homology of Real bordism.

Topological symmetric and braid homologies

We identify topological symmetric homology as the free $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-algebra on an $\mathbb{E}_1$-algebra and topological braid homology as the free $\mathbb{E}_2$-algebra on an $\mathbb{E}_1$-algebra. In this way, topological symmetric homology and topological braid homology can be regarded as variants of $1$-dimensional representation homology. In order to identify topological braid homology as the free $\mathbb{E}_2$-algebra on an $\mathbb{E}_1$-algebra, we prove that the $\mathbb{E}_2$-monoidal envelope of the associative operad can be identified with the braided crossed simplicial group. Using this, we also compute the topological braid homology of grouplike $\mathbb{E}_1$-spaces. Further, we develop computational tools for topological symmetric and braid homologies. These tools allow us to perform low-degree computations of topological symmetric homology and prove that it is not Morita invariant. We also compute the topological $\Delta \mathbf{G}$-homology of Thom spectra in general and produce explicit formulas in the case of topological symmetric and braid homologies.

Quantum topological Hochschild homology and annular Khovanov spectra

Topological Hochschild homology is a topological analogue of classical Hochschild homology of algebras and bimodules. Beliakova, Putyra, and Wehrli introduced quantum Hochschild homology (qHH) and used it to define a quantization of annular Khovanov homology as qHH of the tangle bimodules of Chen-Khovanov and Stroppel. After introducing quantum topological Hochschild homology (qTHH), we construct a new stable homotopy refinement of quantum annular Khovanov homology and show that it agrees with qTHH of the spectral Chen-Khovanov tangle bimodules of Lawson, Lipshitz, and Sarkar. We also show that this new stable homotopy refinement recovers the construction introduced in earlier work of Krushkal together with the first and third authors.

Trace methods for equivariant algebraic K-theory

In the past decades, one of the most fruitful approaches to the study of algebraic $K$-theory has been trace methods, which construct and study trace maps from algebraic $K$-theory to topological Hochschild homology and related invariants. In recent years, theories of equivariant algebraic $K$-theory have emerged, but thus far few tools are available for the study and computation of these theories. In this paper, we lay the foundations for a trace methods approach to equivariant algebraic $K$-theory. For $G$ a finite group, we construct a Dennis trace map from equivariant algebraic $K$-theory to a $G$-equivariant version of topological Hochschild homology; for $G$ the trivial group this recovers the ordinary Dennis trace map. We show that upon taking fixed points, this recovers the trace map of Adamyk--Gerhardt--Hess--Klang--Kong, and gives a trace map from the fixed points of coarse equivariant $A$-theory to the free loop space. We also establish important properties of equivariant topological Hochschild homology, such as Morita invariance, and explain why it can be considered as a multiplicative norm.

Coalgebraic $K$-theory

We establish comparison maps between the classical algebraic $K$-theory of algebras over a field and its analogue $K^c$, an algebraic $K$-theory for coalgebras over a field. The comparison maps are compatible with the Hattori--Stallings (co)traces. We identify conditions on the algebras or coalgebras under which the comparison maps are equivalences. Notably, the algebraic $K$-theory of the power series ring is equivalent to the $K^c$-theory of the divided power coalgebra. We also establish comparison maps between the $G$-theory of finite dimensional representations of an algebra and its analogue $G^c$ for coalgebras. In particular, we show that the Swan theory of a group is equivalent to the $G^c$-theory of the representative functions coalgebra, reframing the classical character of a group as a trace in coHochschild homology.

Equivariant Witt Complexes and Twisted Topological Hochschild Homology

The topological Hochschild homology of a ring (or ring spectrum) $R$ is an $S^1$-spectrum, and the fixed points of THH($R$) for subgroups $C_n\subset S^1$ have been widely studied due to their use in algebraic K-theory computations. Hesselholt and Madsen proved that the fixed points of topological Hochschild homology are closely related to Witt vectors. Further, they defined the notion of a Witt complex, and showed that it captures the algebraic structure of the homotopy groups of the fixed points of THH. Recent work of Angeltveit, Blumberg, Gerhardt, Hill, Lawson and Mandell defines a theory of twisted topological Hochschild homology for equivariant rings (or ring spectra) that builds upon Hill, Hopkins and Ravenel's work on equivariant norms. In this paper, we study the algebraic structure of the equivariant homotopy groups of twisted THH. In particular, we define an equivariant Witt complex and prove that the equivariant homotopy of twisted THH has this structure. Our definition of equivariant Witt complexes contributes to a growing body of research in the subject of equivariant algebra.

A trace map on higher scissors congruence groups

Cut-and-paste $K$-theory has recently emerged as an important variant of higher algebraic $K$-theory. However, many of the powerful tools used to study classical higher algebraic $K$-theory do not yet have analogues in the cut-and-paste setting. In particular, there does not yet exist a sensible notion of the Dennis trace for cut-and-paste $K$-theory. In this paper we address the particular case of the $K$-theory of polyhedra, also called scissors congruence $K$-theory. We introduce an explicit, computable trace map from the higher scissors congruence groups to group homology, and use this trace to prove the existence of some nonzero classes in the higher scissors congruence groups. We also show that the $K$-theory of polyhedra is a homotopy orbit spectrum. This fits into Thomason's general framework of $K$-theory commuting with homotopy colimits, but we give a self-contained proof. We then use this result to re-interpret the trace map as a partial inverse to the map that commutes homotopy orbits with algebraic $K$-theory.

Topological coHochschild Homology and the Homology of Free Loop Spaces

We study the homology of free loop spaces via techniques arising from the theory of topological coHochschild homology (coTHH). Topological coHochschild homology is a topological analogue of the classical theory of coHochschild homology for coalgebras. We produce new spectrum-level structure on coTHH of suspension spectra as well as new algebraic structure in the coBökstedt spectral sequence for computing coTHH. These new techniques allow us to compute the homology of free loop spaces in several new cases, extending known calculations.

Computational tools for twisted topological Hochschild homology of equivariant spectra

Twisted topological Hochschild homology of $C_n$-equivariant spectra was introduced by Angeltveit, Blumberg, Gerhardt, Hill, Lawson, and Mandell, building on the work of Hill, Hopkins, and Ravenel on norms in equivariant homotopy theory. In this paper we introduce tools for computing twisted THH, which we apply to computations for Thom spectra, Eilenberg-MacLane spectra, and the real bordism spectrum $MU_{\mathbb{R}}$. In particular, we construct an equivariant version of the Bökstedt spectral sequence, the formulation of which requires further development of the Hochschild homology of Green functors, first introduced by Blumberg, Gerhardt, Hill, and Lawson.

Real topological Hochschild homology via the norm and Real Witt vectors

We prove that Real topological Hochschild homology can be characterized as the norm from the cyclic group of order $2$ to the orthogonal group $O(2)$. From this perspective, we then prove a multiplicative double coset formula for the restriction of this norm to dihedral groups of order $2m$. This informs our new definition of Real Hochschild homology of rings with anti-involution, which we show is the algebraic analogue of Real topological Hochschild homology. Using extra structure on Real Hochschild homology, we define a new theory of $p$-typical Witt vectors of rings with anti-involution. We end with an explicit computation of the degree zero $D_{2m}$-Mackey functor homotopy groups of $\operatorname{THR}(\underline{\mathbb{Z}})$ for $m$ odd. This uses a Tambara reciprocity formula for sums for general finite groups, which may be of independent interest.

A shadow perspective on equivariant Hochschild homologies

Shadows for bicategories, defined by Ponto, provide a useful framework that generalizes classical and topological Hochschild homology. In this paper, we define Hochschild-type invariants for monoids in a symmetric monoidal, simplicial model category $\mathsf V$, as well as for small $\mathsf V$-categories. We show that each of these constructions extends to a shadow on an appropriate bicategory, which implies in particular that they are Morita invariant. We also define a generalized theory of Hochschild homology twisted by an automorphism and show that it is Morita invariant. Hochschild homology of Green functors and $C_n$-twisted topological Hochschild homology fit into this framework, which allows us to conclude that these theories are Morita invariant. We also study linearization maps relating the topological and algebraic theories, proving that the linearization map for topological Hochschild homology arises as a lax shadow functor, and constructing a new linearization map relating topological restriction homology and algebraic restriction homology. Finally, we construct a twisted Dennis trace map from the fixed points of equivariant algebraic $K$-theory to twisted topological Hochschild homology.

The Witt vectors for Green functors

We define twisted Hochschild homology for Green functors. This construction is the algebraic analogue of the relative topological Hochschild homology $THH_{C_n}(-)$, and it describes the $E_2$ term of the Künneth spectral sequence for relative $THH$. Applied to ordinary rings, we obtain new algebraic invariants. Extending Hesselholt's construction of the Witt vectors of noncommutative rings, we interpret our construction as providing Witt vectors for Green functors.

Computational Tools for Topological CoHochschild Homology

In recent work, Hess and Shipley defined a theory of topological coHochschild homology (coTHH) for coalgebras. In this paper we develop computational tools to study this new theory. In particular, we prove a Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg type theorem in the cofree case for differential graded coalgebras. We also develop a coB\"okstedt spectral sequence to compute the homology of coTHH for coalgebra spectra. We use a coalgebra structure on this spectral sequence to produce several computations.

On the algebraic K-theory of truncated polynomial algebras in several variables

We consider the algebraic K-theory of a truncated polynomial algebra in several commuting variables, K(k[x_1, ..., x_n]/(x_1^a_1, ..., x_n^a_n)). This naturally leads to a new generalization of the big Witt vectors. If k is a perfect field of positive characteristic we describe the K-theory computation in terms of a cube of these Witt vectors on N^n. If the characteristic of k does not divide any of the a_i we compute the K-groups explicitly. We also compute the K-groups modulo torsion for k=Z. To understand this K-theory spectrum we use the cyclotomic trace map to topological cyclic homology, and write TC(k[x_1, ..., x_n]/(x_1^a_1, ..., x_n^a_n)) as the iterated homotopy cofiber of an n-cube of spectra, each of which is easier to understand. Updated: This is a substantial revision. We corrected several errors in the description of the Witt vectors on a truncation set on N^n and modified the key proofs accordingly. We also replaces several topological statement with purely algebraic ones. Most arguments have been reworked and streamlined.

RO(S^1)-graded TR-groups of F_p, Z and \ell

We give an algorithm for calculating the RO(S^1)-graded TR-groups of F_p, completing the calculation started by the second author. We also calculate the RO(S^1)-graded TR-groups of Z with mod p coefficients and of the Adams summand \ell of connective complex K-theory with V(1)-coefficients. Some of these calculations are used elsewhere to compute the algebraic K-theory of certain Z-algebras.

On the K-theory of truncated polynomial algebras over the integers

We show that the K_{2i}(Z[x]/(x^m),(x)) is finite of order (mi)!(i!)^{m-2} and that K_{2i+1}(Z[x]/(x^m),(x)) is free abelian of rank m-1. This is accomplished by showing that the equivariant homotopy groups of the topological Hochschild spectrum THH(Z) are finite, in odd degrees, and free abelian, in even degrees, and by evaluating their orders and ranks, respectively.
