Cyclotomic skew partial difference sets and partial difference families

Skew partial difference sets (skew PDSs) are recently-introduced combinatorial objects closely related to partial difference sets (PDSs). To date, only one construction approach for non-trivial skew PDSs is known, using bent partitions: this produces examples of Latin square type. In this paper we show that these examples are not an isolated phenomenon; we present new constructions for families of skew PDSs using cyclotomy in finite fields. We provide the first constructions for skew PDSs of Paley type, and new constructions for Latin square type (with different parameters to those from bent partitions). Moreover, we show how skew PDSs relate to disjoint and external partial difference families (DPDFs/EPDFs), and provide new cyclotomic constructions of both standard and relative DPDFs and EPDFs.

On Generalizations of Maiorana-McFarland and $\mathcal{PS}_{ap}$ Functions

We study generalizations of two classical primary constructions of Boolean bent functions, namely the Maiorana-McFarland ($MM$) class and the (Desarguesian) partial spread ($\mathcal{PS}_{ap}$) class. The construction of bent functions lying outside the completed $MM$ class has attracted considerable attention in recent years. In this direction, we construct families of generalized Maiorana--McFarland bent functions that are not equivalent to any function in the classical $MM$ or $\mathcal{PS}_{ap}$ classes, and hence lie outside their completed classes. As a second contribution, we investigate the decomposition of generalized $\mathcal{PS}_{ap}$ functions. We prove that when the degree is sufficiently small relative to the size of the underlying finite field, such functions do not, in general, admit a decomposition into bent or semibent functions. Consequently, they cannot be obtained from known secondary constructions based on concatenation. Finally, we present a secondary construction of Boolean bent functions arising from the concatenation of components of vectorial generalized $\mathcal{PS}_{ap}$ functions. Our constructions and proofs rely on classical results concerning second-order derivatives of bent functions and their duals. In addition, we employ methods from the theory of algebraic curves and their function fields.

Asymptotic performance of double and four circulant codes with small hull dimension

We study the asymptotic behavior of double and four circulant codes, which are quasi-cyclic codes of index two and four respectively. Exact enumeration results are derived for these families of codes with the prescribed hull dimension. These formulas, in turn, are the most used tools to prove the good behavior of double circulant and four circulant codes asymptotically. Computational results on the code families in consideration are provided as well.

On functions of low differential uniformity in characteristic 2: A close look (I)

We introduce a new concept, the APN-defect, which can be thought of as measuring the distance of a given function $G:\mathbb{F}_{2^n} \rightarrow \mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ to the set of almost perfect nonlinear (APN) functions. This concept is motivated by the detailed analysis of the differential behaviour of non-APN functions (of low differential uniformity) $G$ using the so-called difference squares. We describe the relations between the APN-defect and other recent concepts of similar nature. Upper and lower bounds for the values of APN-defect for several classes of functions of interest, including Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials are given. Its exact values in some cases are also calculated. The difference square corresponding to a modification of the inverse function is determined, its APN-defect depending on $n$ is evaluated and the implications are discussed. In the forthcoming second part of this work we further examine modifications of the inverse function. We also study modifications of classes of functions of low uniformity over infinitely many extensions of $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$. We present quantitative results on their differential behaviour, especially in connection with their APN-defects.

On the hull and complementarity of one generator quasi-cyclic codes and four-circulant codes

We study one generator quasi-cyclic codes and four-circulant codes, which are also quasi-cyclic but have two generators. We state the hull dimensions for both classes of codes in terms of the polynomials in their generating elements. We prove results such as the hull dimension of a four-circulant code is even and one-dimensional hull for double-circulant codes, which are special one generator codes, is not possible when the alphabet size $q$ is congruent to 3 mod 4. We also characterize linear complementary pairs among both classes of codes. Computational results on the code families in consideration are provided as well.

A note on the hull and linear complementary pair of cyclic codes

The Euclidean hull of a linear code $C$ is defined as $C\cap C^{\perp}$, where $C^\perp$ denotes the dual of $C$ under the Euclidean inner product. A linear code with zero hull dimension is called a linear complementary dual (LCD) code. A pair $(C, D)$ of linear codes of length $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is called a linear complementary pair (LCP) of codes if $C\oplus D=\mathbb{F}_q^n$. In this paper, we give a characterization of LCD and LCP of cyclic codes of length $q^m-1$, $m \geq 1$, over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ in terms of their basic dual zeros and their trace representations. We also formulate the hull dimension of a cyclic code of arbitrary length over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with respect to its basic dual zero. Moreover, we provide a general formula for the dimension of the intersection of two cyclic codes of arbitrary length over $\mathbb{F}_q$ based on their basic dual zeros.

On functions with the maximal number of bent components

A function $F:\mathbb{F}_2^n\rightarrow \mathbb{F}_2^n$, $n=2m$, can have at most $2^n-2^m$ bent component functions. Trivial examples are obtained as $F(x) = (f_1(x),\ldots,f_m(x),a_1(x),\ldots, a_m(x))$, where $\tilde{F}(x)=(f_1(x),\ldots,f_m(x))$ is a vectorial bent function from $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ to $\mathbb{F}_2^m$, and $a_i$, $1\le i\le m$, are affine Boolean functions. A class of nontrivial examples is given in univariate form with the functions $F(x) = x^{2^r}{\rm Tr^n_m}(Λ(x))$, where $Λ$ is a linearized permutation of $\mathbb{F}_{2^m}$. In the first part of this article it is shown that plateaued functions with $2^n-2^m$ bent components can have nonlinearity at most $2^{n-1}-2^{\lfloor\frac{n+m}{2}\rfloor}$, a bound which is attained by the example $x^{2^r}{\rm Tr^n_m}(x)$, $1\le r<m$ (Pott et al. 2018). This partially solves Question 5 in Pott et al. 2018. We then analyse the functions of the form $x^{2^r}{\rm Tr^n_m}(Λ(x))$. We show that for odd $m$, only $x^{2^r}{\rm Tr^n_m}(x)$, $1\le r<m$, has maximal nonlinearity, whereas there are more of them for even $m$, of which we present one more infinite class explicitly. In detail, we investigate Walsh spectrum, differential spectrum and their relations for the functions $x^{2^r}{\rm Tr^n_m}(Λ(x))$. Our results indicate that this class contains many nontrivial EA-equivalence classes of functions with the maximal number of bent components, if $m$ is even, several with maximal possible nonlinearity.

Determining the Walsh spectra of Taniguchi's and related APN-functions

We introduce a method based on Bezout's theorem on intersection points of two projective plane curves, for determining the nonlinearity of some classes of quadratic functions on $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}}$. Among those are the functions of Taniguchi 2019, Carlet 2011, and Zhou and Pott 2013, all of which are APN under certain conditions. This approach helps to understand why the majority of the functions in those classes have solely bent and semibent components, which in the case of APN functions is called the classical spectrum. More precisely, we show that all Taniguchi functions have the classical spectrum independent from being APN. We determine the nonlinearity of all functions belonging to Carlet's class and to the class of Zhou and Pott, which also confirms with comparatively simple proofs earlier results on the Walsh spectrum of APN-functions in these classes. Using the Hasse-Weil bound, we show that some simple sufficient conditions for the APN-ness of the Zhou-Pott functions, which are given in the original paper, are also necessary.
