Re-configurable Intelligent Surface-based VLC Receivers Using Tunable Liquid-crystals: The Concept

Visible light communication (VLC) enables access to huge unlicensed bandwidth, a higher security level, and no radio frequency interference. With these advantages, VLC emerges as a complementary solution to radio frequency communications. VLC systems have primarily been designed for indoor scenarios with typical transmission distances between 2 and 5 m. Different designs would be required for larger distances. This paper proposes for the first time the use of a liquid crystal (LC)-based re-configurable intelligent surface (RIS) on improving the VLC signal detection and transmission range. An LC-based RIS presents multiple advantages, including the tunability of its photo-refractive parameters. Another advantage is its light amplification capabilities when under the influence of an externally applied field. In this paper, we analyze an LC-based RIS structure to amplify the detected light and improve the VLC signal detection and transmission range. Results show that mixing LC with 4 to 8 wt\% concentration of a dye such as the terthiophene (3T-2MB) improves the VLC transmission range of about 0.20 to 1.08 m. This improvement can reach 6.56 m if we combine 8 wt\% concentration of 3T-2MB and 0.1 wt\% concentration of trinitrofluorenone.

Towards the Use of Re-configurable Intelligent Surfaces in VLC Systems: Beam Steering

The emergence of visible light communication (VLC) technology as a solution to solve radio frequency impediments, such as spectrum shortage, is continuously appealing. In addition to its large and unlicensed bandwidth, VLC provides a high level of security in a closed room with zero radio frequency interference. However, loss of the VLC signal is experienced when the receiver rotates or moves. This challenge requires a special solution for integration into portable devices. On the other hand, re-configurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a technology exploited in radio frequency to solve dead zones and loss of signal. RIS elements are characterized by tunable physico-chemical characteristics including physical depth and refractive index. In this paper, we exploit these RIS attributes to steer the incident light beam and offer the VLC receiver a large range of rotation angle while improving its signal detection capabilities. We show that instead of using convex, parabolic, or spherical lenses, adopting a meta-lens with artificial muscles or a thin-film crystal-liquid with embedded Titanium dioxide nano-disk, a VLC receiver can detect light rays at $90^o$ incidence angle with high precision and considerable improvement in the detected light intensity, even with a miniaturized single photodetector.

Bender's Decomposition for Optimization Design Problems in Communication Networks

Various types of communication networks are constantly emerging to improve the connectivity services and facilitate the interconnection of various types of devices. This involves the development of several technologies, such as device-to-device communications, wireless sensor networks and vehicular communications. The various services provided have heterogeneous requirements on the quality metrics such as throughput, end-to-end latency and jitter. Furthermore, different network technologies have inherently heterogeneous restrictions on resources, e.g., power, interference management requirements, computational capabilities, etc. As a result, different network operations such as spectrum management, routing, power control and offloading need to be performed differently. Mathematical optimization techniques have always been at the heart of such design problems to formulate and propose computationally efficient solution algorithms. One of the existing powerful techniques of mathematical optimization is Benders decomposition (BD), which is the focus of this article. Here, we briefly review different BD variants that have been applied in various existing network types and different design problems. These main variants are the classical, the combinatorial, the multi-stage, and the generalized BD. We discuss compelling BD applications for various network types including heterogeneous cellular networks, infrastructure wired wide area networks, smart grids, wireless sensor networks, and wireless local area networks. Mainly, our goal is to assist the readers in refining the motivation, problem formulation, and methodology of this powerful optimization technique in the context of future networks. We also discuss the BD challenges and the prospective ways these can be addressed when applied to communication networks' design problems.

VLC-Based Networking: Feasibility and Challenges

Visible-light communication (VLC) has emerged as a prominent technology to address the radio spectrum shortage. It is characterized by the unlicensed and unexploited high bandwidth, and provides the system with cost-effective advantages because of the dual-use of light bulbs for illumination and communication and the low complexity design. It is considered to be utilized in various telecommunication systems, including 5G, and represents the key technology for light-fidelity. To this end, VLC has to be integrated into the existing telecommunication networks. Therefore, its analysis as a network technology is momentous. In this article, we consider the feasibility of using VLC as a network technology and discuss the challenges related to the implementation of a VLC-based network, as well as the integration of VLC into existing conventional networks and its inclusion in standards.

Time Reversal based MAC for Multi-Hop Underwater Acoustic Networks

Constrained-energy underwater acoustic nodes are typically connected via a multi-hop underwater acoustic network (MHUAN) to cover a broad marine region. Recently, protocols for efficiently connecting such nodes have received considerable attention. In this paper, we show that the time reversal (TR) process plays an important role in the medium access control (MAC) because of its physical capability to exploit the multi-path energy from the richly scattering underwater environment, as well as to focus the signal energy in both spatial and temporal domains. In MHUANs, with severe multi-path propagation at the physical layer, the active TR process spatially focuses the signals to the location of the intended receiver; this significantly diminishes the interference among parallel links. We propose an active TR-based MAC protocol for MHUANs, with the aim of minimizing collision and maximizing channel utilization simultaneously. Furthermore, by considering the impact of the cross-correlation between different links on the TR-based medium access, we derive the threshold of the link cross-correlation to resolve collision caused by the high cross-correlation between realistic links. We perform simulations using the OPNET and BELLHOP environments, and show that the proposed TR-based MAC results in significantly improved throughput, decreased delay, and reduced data drop ratio in MHUANs.

Effects of CSI Knowledge on Secrecy of Threshold-Selection Decode-and-Forward Relaying

This paper considers secrecy of a three node cooperative wireless system in the presence of a passive eavesdropper. The threshold-selection decode-and-forward (DF) relay is considered, which can decode the source message correctly only if a predefined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is achieved. The effects of channel state information (CSI) availability on secrecy outage probability (SOP) and ergodic secrecy rate (ESR) are investigated, and closed-form expressions are derived. Diversity is achieved from the direct and relaying paths both at the destination and at the eavesdropper by combinations of maximal-ratio combining (MRC) and selection combining (SC) schemes. An asymptotic analysis is provided when each hop SNR is the same in the balanced case and when it is different in the unbalanced case. The analysis shows that both hops can be a bottleneck for secure communication; however, they do not affect the secrecy identically. While it is observed that CSI knowledge can improve secrecy, the amount of improvement for SOP is more when the required rate is low and for ESR when the operating SNR is also low. It is also shown that the source to eavesdropper link SNR is more crucial for secure communication.

Simple sampling clock synchronisation scheme for reduced-guard-interval coherent optical OFDM systems

A simple data-aided scheme for sampling clock synchronisation in reduced-guard-interval coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (RGI-CO-OFDM) systems is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the sampling clock offset (SCO) is estimated by using the training symbols reserved for channel estimation, thus avoiding extra training overhead. The SCO is then compensated by resampling, using a time-domain interpolation filter. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by means of numerical simulations in a 32-Gbaud 16-QAM dual-polarisation RGI-CO-OFDM system.

Robust Frame and Frequency Synchronization Based on Alamouti Coding for RGI-CO-OFDM

We propose an algorithm for carrying out joint frame and frequency synchronization in reduced-guard-interval coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (RGI-CO-OFDM) systems. The synchronization is achieved by using the same training symbols (TS) employed for training-aided channel estimation (TA-CE), thereby avoiding additional training overhead. The proposed algorithm is designed for polarization division multiplexing (PDM) RGI-CO-OFDM systems that use the Alamouti-type polarization-time coding for TA-CE. Due to their optimal TA-CE performance, Golay complementary sequences have been used as the TS in the proposed algorithm. The frame synchronization is accomplished by exploiting the cross-correlation between the received TS from the two orthogonal polarizations. The arrangement of the TS is also used to estimate the carrier frequency offset. Simulation results of a PDM RGI-CO-OFDM system operating at 238.1 Gb/s data rate (197.6-Gb/s after coding), with a total overhead of 9.2% (31.6% after coding), show that the proposed scheme has accurate synchronization, and is robust to linear fiber impairments.

Discrete FRFT-Based Frame and Frequency Synchronization for Coherent Optical Systems

A joint frame and carrier frequency synchronization algorithm for coherent optical systems, based on the digital computation of the fractional Fourier transform (FRFT), is proposed. The algorithm utilizes the characteristics of energy centralization of chirp signals in the FRFT domain, together with the time and phase shift properties of the FRFT. Chirp signals are used to construct a training sequence (TS), and fractional cross-correlation is employed to define a detection metric for the TS, from which a set of equations can be obtained. Estimates of both the timing offset and carrier frequency offset (CFO) are obtained by solving these equations. This TS is later employed in a phase-dependent decision-directed least-mean square algorithm for adaptive equalization. Simulation results of a 32-Gbaud coherent polarization division multiplexed Nyquist system show that the proposed scheme has a wide CFO estimation range and accurate synchronization performance even in poor optical signal-to-noise ratio conditions.
