Ultra-narrow linewidth light generation based on an optoelectronic oscillator

Narrow-linewidth light sources are essential for both fundamental research and various technological applications, yet they are challenging to generate directly due to instabilities in active laser cavities and the misalignment between closely spaced resonator modes and broad gain bandwidth. In this study, we demonstrate the direct generation of low-noise light from an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO). By minimizing the delay in the optoelectronic link and employing a high-quality optical resonator, an OEO can simultaneously generate both a low-phase-noise optical oscillation that is resilient to phase fluctuations of its pump laser, and a radio frequency (RF) oscillation that captures these fluctuations. We leverage these RF-domain fluctuations to implement a high-performance feedback loop, which stabilizes the pump laser and significantly enhances the performance of optical oscillation. This approach achieves an outstanding phase noise level of -100 dBc/Hz at a 1 kHz offset and an integrated linewidth as narrow as 0.23 Hz. The integration of optoelectronic oscillation and feedback loop provides significant broadband noise suppression compared to conventional schemes for generating narrow-linewidth light, paving the way for developments in fields such as coherent optical communications, atomic spectroscopy, metrology, and quantum optics.

Microwave Photonic Ising Machine

Ising machines based on analog systems have the potential of acceleration in solving ubiquitous combinatorial optimization problems. Although some artificial spins to support large-scale Ising machine is reported, e.g. superconducting qubits in quantum annealers and short optical pulses in coherent Ising machines, the spin coherence is fragile due to the ultra-low equivalent temperature or optical phase sensitivity. In this paper, we propose to use short microwave pulses generated from an optoelectronic parametric oscillator as the spins to implement the Ising machine with large scale and also high coherence under room temperature. The proposed machine supports 10,000 spins, and the high coherence leads to accurate computation. Moreover, the Ising machine is highly compatible with high-speed electronic devices for programmability, paving a low-cost, accurate, and easy-to-implement way toward to solve real-world optimization problems.

Discovery of dissipative microwave photonic solitons

Dissipative solitons rely on the double balance between nonlinearity and dispersion as well as gain and loss have attracted a lot of attention in optics, since it gives rise to ultrashort pulses and broadband frequency combs with good stability and smooth spectral envelopes. Here we observe a novel dissipative solitons in microwave photonics that gives rise to wideband tunable frequency hopping microwave signals with fast frequency switching speed. The dissipative microwave photonic solitions are achieved through the double balance between nonlinear gain saturation and linear filtering as well as gain and loss in a microwave photonic resonant cavity. The generation of dissipative solitons with different pulse width, repletion rate and number of solitons per round-trip time are observed, together with the corresponding wideband tunable frequency hopping microwave signals. This work opens new avenues for signal generation, processing and control based on the principle of solitons in microwave photonics, and has great potential in many applications such as modern radars, electronic warfare systems, and telecommunications.
