Identification of gapless phases by a twisting operator

We propose a general necessary condition for a spin chain with SO(3) spin-rotation symmetry to be gapped. Specifically, we prove that the ground state(s) of an SO(3)-symmetric gapped spin chain must be spin singlet(s), and the expectation value of a twisting operator asymptotically approaches unity in the thermodynamic limit, where finite-size corrections are inversely proportional to the system size. This theorem provides (i) supporting evidence for various conjectured gapped phases, and (ii) a sufficient criterion for identifying gapless spin chains. We verify our theorem by numerical simulations for a variety of spin models and show that it offers a novel efficient way to identify gapless phases in spin chains with spin-rotation symmetry.

Infinite-temperature quantum phases and phase transitions

In this study, we reveal nontrivial quantum physics in an infinite-temperature system. By performing an unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we study a hybrid model composed of hard-core bosons, whose hopping amplitude is mediated by the density of another type of soft-core bond bosons that can absorb entropy indefinitely. It is shown that the Bose-Einstein condensate can persist in three dimensions even when the temperature approaches the infinite-temperature limit. In contrast, in two dimensions, the quasi-superfluid is depleted by the fluctuations of the bond bosons, which, on the other hand, enhance the conductivity of the hard-core bosons in the normal phase. A generalization to the fermionic model has also been discussed.

Quantum slush state in Rydberg atom arrays

In this study, we propose an exotic quantum state which does not order at zero temperature in a Rydberg atom array with antiblockade mechanism. By performing an unbiased large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate a minimal model with facilitated excitation in a disorder-free system. At zero temperature, this model exhibits a heterogeneous structure of liquid and glass mixture. This state, dubbed quantum slush state, features a quasi-long-range order with an algebraic decay for its correlation function, and is different from most well-established quantum phases of matter.

Emergent non-Hermitian physics in generalized Lotka-Volterra model

In this paper, we study the non-Hermitian physics emerging from a predator-prey ecological model described by a generalized Lotka-Volterra equation. In the phase space, this nonlinear equation exhibits both chaotic and localized dynamics, which are separated by a critical point. These distinct dynamics originate from the interplay between the periodicity and non-Hermiticity of the effective Hamiltonian in the linearized equation of motion. Moreover, the dynamics at the critical point, such as algebraic divergence, can be understood as an exceptional point in the context of non-Hermitian physics.

Sensitivity of topological edge states in a non-Hermitian dimer chain

Photonic topological edge states in one-dimensional dimer chains have long been thought to be robust to structural perturbations by mapping the topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of a solid-state system. However, the edge states at the two ends of a finite topological dimer chain will interact as a result of near-field coupling. This leads to deviation from topological protection by the chiral symmetry from the exact zero energy, weakening the robustness of the topological edge state. With the aid of non-Hermitian physics, the splitting frequencies of edge states can be degenerated again and topological protection recovered by altering the gain or loss strength of the structure. This point of coalescence is known as the exceptional point (EP). The intriguing physical properties of EPs in topological structures give rise to many fascinating and counterintuitive phenomena. In this work, based on a finite non-Hermitian dimer chain composed of ultra-subwavelength resonators, we propose theoretically and verify experimentally that the sensitivity of topological edge states is greatly affected when the system passes through the EP. Using the EP of a non-Hermitian dimer chain, we realize a new sensor that is sensitive to perturbation at the end of the structure and yet topologically protected from internal perturbation. Our demonstration of a non-Hermitian topological structure with an EP paves the way for the development of novel sensors that are not sensitive to internal manufacturing errors but are highly sensitive to changes in the external environment.
