Duals of finite quantum permutation groups

We work out axioms for the duals $G\subset U_N^+$ of the finite quantum permutation groups, $F\subset S_N^+$ with $|F|<\infty$, and we discuss how the basic theory of such quantum permutation groups partly simplifies in the dual setting. We discuss as well some potential extensions to the infinite case, in connection with the well-known question of axiomatizing the discrete quantum group actions on the infinite graphs.

Modelling questions for transitive quantum groups

This is a survey on the transitive quantum groups $G\subset S_N^+$, and on the flat matrix models $π:C(G)\to M_N(C(X))$ for the corresponding Hopf algebras. We review the known results on the subject, with a number of improvements, technical generalizations, and some new results as well, and we discuss the open problems.

Deformed Fourier matrices in bistochastic form

Many interesting examples of complex Hadamard matrices $H\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ can be put, up to the standard equivalence relation for such matrices, in bistochastic form. We discuss here this phenomenon, with a number of computations for some of the most basic such matrices, namely the deformations of the Fourier matrix $F_N\in M_N(\mathbb C)$.

A note on the half-liberation operation

We propose a new approach to the half-liberation question, for the compact groups $T_N\subset G_N\subset U_N$, where $T_N=\mathbb Z_2^N$. Indeed, we can construct a quantum group $T_N^*\subset G_N^*\subset U_N^*$, simply by setting $G_N^*= $. We explain here how this construction fits into the known general theory of half-liberation, and we discuss as well some potential generalizations, with $T_N^*$ being replaced by more complicated objects.

Compact quantum groups generated by their tori

Associated to any closed subgroup $G\subset U_N^+$ is a family of toral subgroups $T_Q\subset G$, indexed by the unitary matrices $Q\in U_N$. The family $\{T_Q|Q\in U_N\}$ is expected to encode the main properties of $G$, and there are several conjectures in this sense. We verify here the generation conjecture, $G= $, for various classes of compact quantum groups. Our results generalize the previously known facts on the subject.

Unitary quantum groups vs quantum reflection groups

We study the intermediate liberation problem for the real and complex unitary and reflection groups, namely $O_N,U_N,H_N,K_N$. For any of these groups $G_N$, the problem is that of understanding the structure of the intermediate quantum groups $G_N\subset G_N^\times\subset G_N^+$, in terms of the recently introduced notions of "soft" and "hard" liberation. We solve here some of these questions, our key ingredient being the generation formula $H_N^{[\infty]}= $, coming via crossed product methods. Also, we conjecture the existence of a "contravariant duality" between the liberations of $H_N$ and of $U_N$, as a solution to the lack of a covariant duality between these liberations.

Super-easy quantum groups with arbitrary parameters

We discuss an extended easy quantum group formalism, with the Schur-Weyl theoretic Kronecker symbols being as general as possible, and allowed to take values in $\{-1,0,1\}$, and more generally in $\mathbb T\cup\{0\}$. Our study includes an axiomatization of the theory, some structure and classification results, and the study of the basic examples of quantum unitary and reflection groups, with both positive and negative results.

Soft and hard liberation of compact Lie groups

We investigate the liberation question for the compact Lie groups, by using various "soft" and "hard" methods, based respectively on joint generation with a free quantum group, and joint generation with a free torus. The soft methods extend the "easy" methods, notably by covering groups like $SO_N,SU_N$, and the hard methods partly extend the soft methods, notably by covering the real and complex tori themselves.

Homogeneous quantum groups and their easiness level

Given a closed subgroup $G\subset U_N^+$ which is homogeneous, in the sense that we have $S_N\subset G\subset U_N^+$, the corresponding Tannakian category $C$ must satisfy $span(\mathcal{NC}_2)\subset C\subset span(P)$. Based on this observation, we construct a certain integer $p\in\mathbb N\cup\{\infty\}$, that we call "easiness level" of $G$. The value $p=1$ corresponds to the case where $G$ is easy, and we explore here, with some theory and examples, the case $p>1$. As a main application, we show that $S_N\subset S_N^+$ and other liberation inclusions, known to be maximal in the easy setting, remain maximal at the easiness level $p=2$ as well.

Quantum groups under very strong axioms

We study the intermediate quantum groups $H_N\subset G\subset U_N^+$. The basic examples are $H_N,K_N,O_N,U_N,H_N^+,K_N^+,O_N^+,U_N^+$, which form a cube. Any other example $G$ sits inside the cube, and by using standard operations, namely intersection $\cap$ and generation $<\,,>$, can be projected on the faces and edges. We prove that under the strongest possible axioms, namely (1) easiness, (2) uniformity, and (3) geometric coherence of the various projection operations, the 8 basic solutions are the only ones.

Quantum invariants of deformed Fourier matrices

We study the deformed tensor products of complex Hadamard matrices, $L_{ia,jb}=Q_{ib}H_{ij}K_{ab}$. One problem is that of reconstructing the quantum group $G_L\subset S_{NM}^+$ out of the quantum groups $G_H\subset S_N^+,G_K\subset S_M^+$ and of the parameter matrix $Q\in M_{N\times M}(\mathbb T)$, and we obtain here several results, including complete results in the Fourier matrix case, $H=F_N,K=F_M$, when the parameter matrix $Q$ is generic.

Algebraic invariants of truncated Fourier matrices

A partial Hadamard matrix $H\in M_{M\times N}(\mathbb C)$ is called of "classical type" if the associated quantum semigroup $G\subset\widetilde{S}_M^+$ is classical. In combinatorial terms, if $H_1,\ldots,H_M\in\mathbb T^N$ are the rows of the matrix, the vectors $H_i/H_j\in\mathbb T^N$ must be pairwise proportional, or orthogonal. We propose here of definition for the algebraic (or quantum) invariants of such matrices. For the truncated Fourier matrices, which are all of classical type, we obtain certain Bernoulli laws, that we compute in the $N>>M$ regime.

The quantum algebra of partial Hadamard matrices

A partial Hadamard matrix is a matrix $H\in M_{M\times N}(\mathbb T)$ whose rows are pairwise orthogonal. We associate to each such $H$ a certain quantum semigroup $G$ of quantum partial permutations of $\{1,...,M\}$ and study the correspondence $H\to G$. We discuss as well the relation between the completion problems for a given partial Hadamard matrix and completion problems for the associated submagic matrix $P\in M_M(M_N(\mathbb C))$, in both cases introducing certain criteria for the existence of the suitable completions.

Counting results for thin Butson matrices

A partial Butson matrix is a matrix $H\in M_{M\times N}(\mathbb Z_q)$ having its rows pairwise orthogonal, where $\mathbb Z_q\subset\mathbb C^\times$ is the group of $q$-th roots of unity. We investigate here the counting problem for these matrices in the "thin" regime, where $M=2,3,\ldots$ is small, and where $N\to\infty$ (subject to the condition $N\in p\mathbb N$ when $q=p^k>2$). The proofs are inspired from the de Launey-Levin and Richmond-Shallit counting results.

Submatrices of Hadamard matrices: complementation results

Two submatrices $A,D$ of a Hadamard matrix $H$ are called complementary if, up to a permutation of rows and columns, $H=[^A_C{\ }^B_D]$. We find here an explicit formula for the polar decomposition of $D$. As an application, we show that under suitable smallness assumptions on the size of $A$, the complementary matrix $D$ is an almost Hadamard sign pattern, i.e. its rescaled polar part is an almost Hadamard matrix.
