Sharp estimates for conditionally centred moments and for compact operators on $L^p$ spaces

Let $(\Omega, \mathcal{F}, \mathbf{P})$ be a probability space, $\xi$ be a random variable on $(\Omega, \mathcal{F}, \mathbf{P})$, $\mathcal{G}$ be a sub-$\sigma$-algebra of $\mathcal{F}$, and let $\mathbf{E}^\mathcal{G} = \mathbf{ E}(\cdot | \mathcal{G})$ be the corresponding conditional expectation operator. We obtain sharp estimates for the moments of $\xi - \mathbf{E}^\mathcal{G}\xi$ in terms of the moments of $\xi$. This allows us to find the optimal constant in the bounded compact approximation property of $L^p([0, 1])$, $1 < p < \infty$.

An estimate for narrow operators on $L^p([0, 1])$

We prove a theorem, which generalises C. Franchetti's estimate for the norm of a projection onto a rich subspace of $L^p([0, 1])$ and the authors' related estimate for compact operators on $L^p([0, 1])$, $1 \le p < \infty$.

Asymptotic Behaviour of Truncated Stochastic Approximation Procedures

We study asymptotic behaviour of stochastic approximation procedures with three main characteristics: truncations with random moving bounds, a matrix valued random step-size sequence, and a dynamically changing random regression function. In particular, we show that under quite mild conditions, stochastic approximation procedures are asymptotically linear in the statistical sense, that is, they can be represented as weighted sums of random variables. Therefore, a suitable form of the central limit theorem can be applied to derive asymptotic distribution of the corresponding processes. The theory is illustrated by various examples and special cases.

Rate of Convergence of Truncated Stochastic Approximation Procedures with Moving Bounds

The paper is concerned with stochastic approximation procedures having three main characteristics: truncations with random moving bounds, a matrix valued random step-size sequence, and a dynamically changing random regression function. We study convergence and rate of convergence. Main results are supplemented with corollaries to establish various sets of sufficient conditions, with the main emphases on the parametric statistical estimation. The theory is illustrated by examples and special cases.

Truncated Stochastic Approximation with Moving Bounds: Convergence

In this paper we propose a wide class of truncated stochastic approximation procedures with moving random bounds. While we believe that the proposed class of procedures will find its way to a wider range of applications, the main motivation is to accommodate applications to parametric statistical estimation theory. Our class of stochastic approximation procedures has three main characteristics: truncations with random moving bounds, a matrix valued random step-size sequence, and dynamically changing random regression function. We establish convergence and consider several examples to illustrate the results.

Recursive Parameter Estimation: Convergence

We consider estimation procedures which are recursive in the sense that each successive estimator is obtained from the previous one by a simple adjustment. We propose a wide class of recursive estimation procedures for the general statistical model and study convergence.

Recursive Parameter Estimation: Asymptotic expansion

We consider estimation procedures which are recursive in the sense that each successive estimator is obtained from the previous one by a simple adjustment. The model considered in the paper is very general as we do not impose any preliminary restrictions on the probabilistic nature of the observation process and cover a wide class of nonlinear recursive procedures. In this paper we study asymptotic behaviour of the recursive estimators. The results of the paper can be used to determine the form of a recursive procedure which is expected to have the same asymptotic properties as the corresponding non-recursive one defined as a solution of the corresponding estimating equation.
