Stability analysis of Richardson models with delay for confrontation between two countries

This article proposes a non-autonomous mathematical model with delay for confrontation between two countries, and examines the stability of its equilibrium state. Our criteria for stability take into account the influence of the factor of hostility between countries. For the autonomous case, the asymptotic stability is studied in a comprehensive way, and the Hopf bifurcations occurring as the delay crosses some critical values are described. For the non-autonomous model, conditions ensuring the global asymptotic stability for both the linear approximation and the nonlinear system are established. The framework of special solutions for delay differential equations is also applied.

Periodic solutions for a delayed competitive chemostat model with periodic nutrient input and rate

A nonautonomous periodic chemostat model with delays modelling $n$ species in competition is considered. Sufficient conditions on the coefficients and consumption functions for the species are given, for both the extinction of the species and for the existence of $n$ nontrivial and nonnegative periodic solutions. Further criteria guarantee that the system admits at least one strictly positive periodic solution.

Asymptotic behaviour of general nonautonomous Nicholson equations with mixed monotonicities

A general nonautonomous Nicholson equation with multiple pairs of delays in {\it mixed monotone} nonlinear terms is studied. Sufficient conditions for permanence are given, with explicit lower and upper uniform bounds for all positive solutions. Imposing an additional condition on the size of some of the delays, and by using an adequate difference equation of the form $x_{n+1}=h(x_n)$, we show that all positive solutions are globally attractive. In the case of a periodic equation, a criterion for existence of a globally attractive positive solution is provided. The results here constitute a significant improvement of recent literature, in view of the generality of the equation under study and of sharper criteria obtained for situations covered in recent works. Several examples illustrate the results.

Positive periodic solutions for systems of impulsive delay differential equations

A class of periodic differential $n$-dimensional systems with patch structure with (possibly infinite) delay and nonlinear impulses is considered. These systems incorporate very general nonlinearities and impulses whose signs may vary. Criteria for the existence of at least one positive periodic solution are presented, extending and improving previous ones established for the scalar case. Applications to systems inspired in mathematical biology models, such as impulsive hematopoiesis and Nicholson-type systems, are also included.

Global attractivity for a nonautonomous Nicholson's equation with mixed monotonicities

We consider a Nicholson's equation with multiple pairs of time-varying delays and nonlinear terms given by mixed monotone functions. Sufficient conditions for the permanence, local stability and global attractivity of its positive equilibrium are established. Our criteria depend on the size of some delays, improve results in recent literature and provide answers to some open problems.

Permanence for nonautonomous differential systems with delays in the linear and nonlinear terms

In this paper, we obtain sufficient conditions for the permanence of a family of nonautonomous systems of delay differential equations. This family includes structured models from mathematical biology, with either discrete or distributed delays in both the linear and nonlinear terms, and where typically the nonlinear terms are nonmonotone. Applications to generalized Nicholson or Mackey-Glass systems are given.

Stability for nonautonomous linear differential systems with infinite delay

We study the stability of general $n$-dimensional nonautonomous linear differential equations with infinite delays. Delay independent criteria, as well as criteria depending on the size of some finite delays are established. In the first situation, the effect of the delays is dominated by non-delayed diagonal negative feedback terms, and sufficient conditions for both the asymptotic and the exponential asymptotic stability of the system are given. In the second case, the stability depends on the size of some bounded diagonal delays and coefficients, although terms with unbounded delay may co-exist. Our results encompass DDEs with discrete and distributed delays, and enhance some recent achievements in the literature.

Attractivity of Saturated Equilibria for Lotka-Volterra Systems with Infinite Delays and Feedback Controls

In this paper, we apply a Lyapunov functional approach to Lotka-Volterra systems with infinite delays and feedback controls and establish that the feedback controls have no influence on the attractivity properties of a saturated equilibrium. This improves previous results by the authors and others, where, while feedback controls were used mostly to change the position of a unique saturated equilibrium, additional conditions involving the controls had to be assumed in order to preserve its global attractivity. The situation of partial extinction is further analysed, for which the original system is reduced to a lower dimensional one which maintains its global dynamics features.

Asymptotic behaviour for a class of non-monotone delay differential systems with applications

The paper concerns a class of $n$-dimensional non-autonomous delay differential equations obtained by adding a non-monotone delayed perturbation to a linear homogeneous cooperative system of ordinary differential equations. This family covers a wide set of models used in structured population dynamics. By exploiting the stability and the monotone character of the linear ODE, we establish sufficient conditions for both the extinction of all the populations and the permanence of the system. In the case of DDEs with autonomous coefficients (but possible time-varying delays), sharp results are obtained, even in the case of a reducible community matrix. As a sub-product, our results improve some criteria for autonomous systems published in recent literature. As an important illustration, the extinction, persistence and permanence of a non-autonomous Nicholson system with patch structure and multiple time-dependent delays are analysed.

Periodic solutions for a non-monotone family of delayed differential equations with applications to Nicholson systems

For a family of $n$-dimensional periodic delay differential equations which encompasses a broad set of models used in structured population dynamics, the existence of a positive periodic solution is obtained under very mild conditions. The proof uses the Schauder fixed point theorem and relies on the permanence of the system. A general criterion for the existence of a positive periodic solution for Nicholson's blowflies periodic systems (with both distributed and discrete time-varying delays) is derived as a simple application of our main result, generalizing the few existing results concerning multi-dimensional Nicholson models. In the case of a Nicholson system with discrete delays all multiples of the period, the global attractivity of the positive periodic solution is further analyzed, improving results in recent literature.

On Stability for Impulsive Delay Differential Equations and Application to a Periodic Lasota-Wazewska Model

We consider a class of scalar delay differential equations with impulses and satisfying an Yorke-type condition, for which some criteria for the global stability of the zero solution are established. Here, the usual requirements about the impulses are relaxed. The results can be applied to study the stability of other solutions, such as periodic solutions. As an illustration, a very general periodic Lasota-Wazewska model with impulses and multiple time-dependent delays is addressed, and the global attractivity of its positive periodic solution analysed. Our results are discussed within the context of recent literature.

Persistence and permanence for a class of functional differential equations with infinite delay

The paper deals with a class of cooperative functional differential equations (FDEs) with infinite delay, for which sufficient conditions for persistence and permanence are established. Here, the persistence refers to all solutions with initial conditions that are positive, continuous and bounded. The present method applies to a very broad class of abstract systems of FDEs with infinite delay, both autonomous and non-autonomous, which include many important models used in mathematical biology. Moreover, the hypotheses imposed are in general very easy to check. The results are illustrated with some selected examples.

Global Dynamics for Lotka-Volterra Systems with Infinite Delay and Patch Structure

We study some aspects of the global dynamics of an $n$-dimensional Lotka-Volterra system with infinite delay and patch structure, such as extinction, persistence, existence and global attractivity of a positive equilibrium. Both the cases of an irreducible and reducible linear community matrix are considered, and no restriction on the signs of the intra- and inter-specific delayed terms is imposed. Although the system is not cooperative, our approach often uses comparison results applied to an auxiliary cooperative system. Some models in recent literature are generalised, and results improved.

A note on permanence of nonautonomous cooperative scalar population models with delays

For a large family of nonautonomous scalar-delayed differential equations used in population dynamics, some criteria for permanence are given, as well as explicit upper and lower bounds for the asymptotic behavior of solutions. The method described here is based on comparative results with auxiliary monotone systems. In particular, it applies to a nonautonomous scalar model proposed as an alternative to the usual delayed logistic equation.

Persistence, permanence and global stability for an n-dimensional Nicholson system

For a Nicholson's blowflies system with patch structure and multiple discrete delays, we analyze several features of the global asymptotic behavior of its solutions. It is shown that if the spectral bound of the community matrix is non-positive, then the population becomes extinct on each patch, whereas the total population uniformly persists if the spectral bound is positive. Explicit uniform lower and upper bounds for the asymptotic behavior of solutions are also given. When the population uniformly persists, the existence of a unique positive equilibrium is established, as well as a sharp criterion for its absolute global asymptotic stability, improving results in the recent literature. While our system is not cooperative, several sharp threshold-type results about its dynamics are proven, even when the community matrix is reducible, a case usually not treated in the literature.

Global Attractivity and Extinction for Lotka-Volterra systems with infinite delay and feedback controls

The paper deals with a multiple species Lotka-Volterra model with infinite distributed delays and feedback controls, for which we assume a weak form of diagonal dominance of the instantaneous negative intra-specific terms over the infinite delay effect in both the population variables and controls. General sufficient conditions for the existence and attractivity of a saturated equilibrium are established. When the saturated equilibrium is on the boundary of $\R^n_+$, sharper criteria for the extinction of all or part of the populations are given. While the literature usually treats the case of competitive systems only, here no restrictions on the signs of the intra- and inter-specific delayed terms are imposed. Moreover, our technique does not require the construction of Lyapunov functionals.

Positive travelling fronts for reaction-diffusion systems with distributed delay

We give sufficient conditions for the existence of positive travelling wave solutions for multi-dimensional autonomous reaction-diffusion systems with distributed delay. To prove the existence of travelling waves, we give an abstract formulation of the equation for the wave profiles in some suitable Banach spaces, and apply known results about the index of some associated Fredholm operators. After a Liapunov-Schmidt reduction, these waves are obtained via the Banach contraction principle, as perturbations of a positive heteroclinic solution for the associated system without diffusion, whose existence is proven under some requirements. By a careful analysis of the exponential decay of the travelling wave profiles at $-\infty$, their positiveness is deduced. The existence of positive travelling waves is important in terms of applications to biological models. Our method applies to systems of delayed reaction-diffusion equations whose nonlinearities are not required to satisfy a quasi-monotonicity condition. Applications are given, and include the delayed Fisher-KPP equation.

Non-monotone travelling waves in a single species reaction-diffusion equation with delay

We prove the existence of a continuous family of positive and generally non-monotone travelling fronts in delayed reaction-diffusion equations $u_t(t,x) = Δu(t,x)- u(t,x) + g(u(t-h,x)) (*)$, when $g \in C^2(R_+,R_+)$ has exactly two fixed points: $x_1= 0$ and $x_2= a >0$. Recently, non-monotonic waves were observed in numerical simulations by various authors. Here, for a wide range of parameters, we explain why such waves appear naturally as the delay $h$ grows. For the case of $g$ with negative Schwarzian, our conditions are rather optimal; we observe that the well known Mackey-Glass type equations with diffusion fall within this subclass of $(*)$. As an example, we consider the diffusive Nicholson's blowflies equation.
