Supercurrent-induced temperature gradient across a nonequilibrium SNS Josephson junction

Using tunneling spectroscopy, we have measured the local electron energy distribution function in the normal part of a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction containing an extra lead to a normal reservoir. In the presence of simultaneous supercurrent and injected quasiparticle current, the distribution function exhibits a sharp feature at very low energy. The feature is odd in energy, and odd under reversal of either the supercurrent or the quasiparticle current direction. The feature represents an effective temperature gradient across the SNS Josephson junction that is controllable by the supercurrent.

Resonant tunneling through a C60 molecular junction in liquid environment

We present electronic transport measurements through thiolated C$_{60}$ molecules in liquid environment. The molecules were placed within a mechanically controllable break junction using a single anchoring group per molecule. When varying the electrode separation of the C$_{60}$-modified junctions, we observed a peak in the conductance traces. The shape of the curves is strongly influenced by the environment of the junction as shown by measurements in two distinct solvents. In the framework of a simple resonant tunneling model, we can extract the electronic tunneling rates governing the transport properties of the junctions.

Nonlinear shot noise in mesoscopic diffusive normal-superconducting systems

We study differential shot noise in mesoscopic diffusive normal-superconducting (NS) heterostructures at finite voltages where nonlinear effects due to the superconducting proximity effect arise. A numerical scattering-matrix approach is adopted. Through an NS contact, we observe that the shot noise shows a reentrant dependence on voltage due to the superconducting proximity effect but the differential Fano factor stays approximately constant. Furthermore, we consider differential shot noise in the structures where an insulating barrier is formed between normal and superconducting regions and calculate the differential Fano factor as a function of barrier height.

Supercurrent-carrying density of states in diffusive mesoscopic Josephson weak links

Recent experiments have demonstrated the nonequilibrium control of the supercurrent through diffusive phase-coherent normal-metal weak links. The experimental results have been accurately described by the quasiclassical Green's function technique in the Keldysh formalism. Taking into account the geometry of the structure, different energy scales and the nonidealities at the interfaces allows us to obtain a quantitative agreement between the theory and the experimental results in both the amplitude and the phase dependence of the supercurrent, with no or very few fitting parameters. Here we discuss the most important factors involved with such comparisons: the ratio between the superconducting order parameter and the Thouless energy of the junction, the effect of additional wires on the weak link, and the effects due to imperfections, most notably due to the nonideal interfaces.
