Langevin description of gauged scalar fields in a thermal bath

We study the dynamics of the oscillating gauged scalar field in a thermal bath. A Langevin type equation of motion of the scalar field, which contains both dissipation and fluctuation terms, is derived by using the real-time finite temperature effective action approach. The existence of the quantum fluctuation-dissipation relation between the non-local dissipation term and the Gaussian stochastic noise terms is verified. We find the noise variables are anti-correlated at equal-time. The dissipation rate for the each mode is also studied, which turns out to depend on the wavenumber.

Constraining Primordial Magnetic Fields by CMB Photon-Graviton Conversion

We revisit the method of using the photon-graviton conversion mechanism in the presence of the external magnetic field to probe small-scale primordial magnetic fields that may exist between the last scattering surface and present. Specifically, we investigate impacts on the conversion efficiency due to the presence of matter, including the plasma collective effect and the atomic polarizability. In general, these effects tend to reduce the conversion probability. Under this more realistic picture and based on the precision of COBE's measurement of CMB (cosmic microwave background) blackbody spectrum, we find an upper bound for the primordial magnetic field strength, B < 30G, at the time of recombination. Although at present the bound based on the photon-graviton conversion mechanism is not as tight as that obtained by the direct use of CMB temperature anisotropy, it nevertheless provides an important independent constraint on primordial magnetic fields and at epochs in addition to the recombination. The bound can be significantly improved if the CMB blackbody spectrum measurement becomes more precise in future experiments such as PIXIE.

Implications of Planck results for models with local type non-Gaussianity

We discuss implications of Planck results for models with local type non-Gaussianity. In light of the recent results of the Planck satellite, we constrain model parameters of several representative models and give the prediction of trispectrum, in particular, gNL. We also consider interesting possibilities that trispectrum appears as the first signature of the non-Gaussianities of the curvature perturbations, that is, fNL is small while gNL can be significantly large.

Detecting cosmic string passage through the Earth by consequent global earthquake

Effects invoked by the passage of the cosmic string through the Earth are investigated. The cosmic string induces global oscillations of the Earth whose amplitude and acceleration both linearly depend on the string line density. For the line density maximally allowed by the cosmic observations, the oscillations are perceivable even to human beings and may cause serious damages to the environment. Use of the sophisticated accelerograph enables us to detect the string of a line density down to ten orders of magnitude smaller than the cosmologically relevant value.

Statistics of general functions of a Gaussian field -application to non-Gaussianity from preheating-

We provide a general formula for calculating correlators of arbitrary function of a Gaussian field. This work extends the standard leading-order approximation based on the delta N formalism to the case where truncation of the delta N at some low order does not yield the correct answer. As an application of this formula, we investigate 2, 3 and 4-point functions of the primordial curvature perturbation generated in the massless preheating model by approximating the mapping between the curvature perturbation and the Gaussian field as a sum of the many spiky normal distribution functions as suggested by lattice calculations. We also discuss observational consequences of this case and show that trispectrum would be a key observable to search signature of preheating in the CMB map. It is found the forms of the curvature correlation functions for any delta N, at the leading order in the correlator of the Gaussian field, coincide with the standard local type ones. Within this approximation, it is also found that the standard formula for the non-linearity parameters given by the product of the derivatives of the e-folding number still holds after we replace the bare e-folding number appearing in the original delta N expansion with the one smoothed in the field space with a Gaussian window function.

Magneto-reheating constraints from curvature perturbations

As additional perturbative degrees of freedom, it is known that magnetic fields of inflationary origin can source curvature perturbations on super-Hubble scales. By requiring the magnetic generated curvature to remain smaller than its inflationary adiabatic counterpart during inflation and reheating, we derive new constraints on the maximal field value today, the reheating energy scale and its equation of state parameter. These bounds end up being stronger by a few order of magnitude than those associated with a possible backreaction of the magnetic field onto the background. Our results are readily applicable to any slow-roll single field inflationary models and any magnetic field having its energy density scaling as a^gamma during inflation. As an illustrative example, massive inflation is found to remain compatible with a magnetic field today Bo = 5 x 10^(-15) G for some values of gamma only if a matter dominated reheating takes place at energies larger than 10^5 GeV. Conversely, assuming gamma=-1, massive inflation followed by a matter dominated reheating cannot explain large scale magnetic fields larger than 10^(-20) G today.

Primordial Non-Gaussianity in Multi-Scalar Inflation

We give a concise formula for the non-Gaussianity of the primordial curvature perturbation generated on super-horizon scales in multi-scalar inflation model without assuming slow-roll conditions. This is an extension of our previous work. Using this formula, we study the generation of non-Gaussianity for the double inflation models in which the slow-roll conditions are temporarily violated after horizon exit, and we show that the non-linear parameter $f_{NL}$ for such models is suppressed by the slow-roll parameters evaluated at the time of horizon exit.

Ultra Slow-Roll Inflation and the non-Gaussianity Consistency Relation

Ultra slow-roll inflation has recently been used to challenge the non-Gaussianity consistency relation. We show that this inflationary scenario belongs to a one parameter class of models and we study its properties and observational predictions. We demonstrate that the power spectrum remains scale-invariant and that the bi-spectrum is of the local type with fnl=5(3-ns)/4 which, indeed, represents a modification of the consistency relation. However, we also show that the system is unstable and suffers from many physical problems among which is the difficulty to correctly WMAP normalize the model. We conclude that ultra slow-roll inflation remains a very peculiar case, the physical relevance of which is probably not sufficient to call into question the validity of the consistency relation.

Consequences of a stochastic approach to the conformal invariance of inflationary correlators

We provide a general formalism to calculate the infrared correlators of multiple interacting scalar fields in the de Sitter space by means of the stochastic approach. These scalar fields are treated as test fields and hence our result is applicable to the models such as the curvaton scenario where the fields that yield initially isocurvature modes do not contribute to the cosmic energy density during inflationary expansion. The stochastic formalism combined with the argument of conformal invariance of the correlators reflecting the de Sitter isometries allows us to fix the form and amplitude of the three-point functions completely and partially for the four-point functions in terms of calculable quantities. It turns out that naive scaling argument employed in the previous literature does not necessarily hold and we derive the necessary and sufficient condition for the correlator to obey the naive scaling. We also find that correlation functions can in principle exhibit more complicated structure than argued in the literature.

Black hole perturbation in nondynamical and dynamical Chern-Simons gravity

Chern-Simons gravitational theories are extensions of general relativity in which the parity is violated due to the Chern-Simons term. We study linear perturbations on the static and spherically symmetric background spacetime both for nondynamical and dynamical Chern-Simons theories. We do not make an assumption that the background Chern-Simons scalar field vanishes, which has been adopted in the literature. By eliminating nondynamical variables using their constraint equations, we derive the reduced second order action from which a set of closed evolution equations containing only dynamical variables are immediately obtained and therefore the number of propagating degrees of freedom as well. It is found that ghost is present both for the nondynamical case and for the dynamical case unless the background Chern-Simons scalar field vanishes. It is also found that if the background scalar field vanishes, ghost degrees of freedom are killed and all the modes propagate at the speed of light.

Self-accelerating solutions in massive gravity on an isotropic reference metric

Within the framework of the recently proposed ghost-free massive gravity, a cosmological constant-type self-accelerating solution has been obtained for Minkowski and de Sitter reference metrics. We ease the assumption on the reference metric and find the self-accelerating solution for the reference metric respecting only isotropy, thus considerably extending the range of known solutions.

Evolution of FLRW spacetime after the birth of a cosmic string

We consider the evolution of an initially FLRW universe after the formation of a long, straight, cosmic string with arbitrary tension and mass per unit length. The birth of the string sources scalar and tensor-type perturbations in the background metric and both density and velocity perturbations in the background fluid, which compensate for the string mass and maintain energy conservation. The former generate the deficit angle within the light cone of the string and a gravitational shock front at the cosmological horizon, whereas the latter are confined within the sound cone. We study the properties of the metric within each region of the resulting spacetime and give the explicit coordinate transformations which demonstrate non-violation of causality. This paper generalizes the work of previous studies for the Nambu-Goto string.

Metric perturbation from inflationary magnetic field and generic bound on inflation models

There is an observational indication of extragalactic magnetic fields. No known astrophysical process can explain the origin of such large scale magnetic fields, which motivates us to look for their origin in primordial inflation. By solving the linearized Einstein equations, we study metric perturbations sourced by magnetic fields that are produced during inflation. This leads to a simple but robust bound on the inflation models by requiring that the induced metric perturbation should not exceed the observed value 10^-5. In case of the standard single field inflation model, the bound can be converted into a lower bound on the Hubble parameter during inflation.

Fully non-linear equivalence of delta N and covariant formalisms

We explicitly show the fully non-linear equivalence of the $δ$N and the covariant formalisms for the superhorizon curvature perturbations, which enables us to safely evaluate the non-Gaussian quantities of the curvature perturbation in either formalism. We also discuss isocurvature perturbations in the covariant formalism and clarify the relation between the fully non-linear evolution of the curvature covector and that of the curvature perturbation for multiple interacting fluids.

Black hole perturbation in parity violating gravitational theories

We study linear perturbations around the static and spherically symmetric spacetime for the gravitational theories whose Lagrangian depends on Ricci scalar and the parity violating Chern-Simons term. By an explicit construction, we show that Hamiltonian for the perturbation variables is not bounded from below in general, suggesting that such a background spacetime is unstable against perturbations. This gives a strong limit on a phenomenological gravitational model which violates parity. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the theory to belong to a special class in which no such instability occurs. For such theories, the number of propagating modes for $\ell \ge 2$ is three, one from the odd and the other two from the even. Unlike in the case of $f(R)$ theories, those modes are coupled each other, which can be used as a distinctive feature to test the parity violating theories from observations. All the modes propagate at the speed of light. No-ghost condition and no-tachyon condition are the same as those in $f(R)$ theories. For the dipole perturbations, the odd and the even modes completely decouple. The odd mode gives a slowly-rotating BH solution whose metric is linearized in its angular momentum. We provide an integral expression of such a solution. On the other hand, the even mode propagates at the speed of light. For the monopole perturbation, in addition to a mode which just shifts the mass of the background BH, there is also one even mode that propagates at the speed of light.

Curvature perturbation from velocity modulation

We propose a new variant model of the modulated reheating. If particles have large scale fluctuations on their velocities, or equivalently their Lorentz factors, the decay rate also fluctuates and the curvature perturbation is induced via their decay processes in analogy with modulated reheating. For example, if they are produced nonthermally by the decay of another field with its mass fluctuating on large scales, such a situation is realized. We explicitly calculate the resulting curvature perturbation and non-linearity parameters and show that the effect of velocity-modulation is not negligible if the particles are semi-relativistic at the decay.

Temporal enhancement of super-horizon curvature perturbations from decays of two curvatons and its cosmological consequences

If more than one curvaton dominate the Universe at different epochs from each other, curvature perturbations can be temporarily enhanced to a value much larger than the observed one 10^{-5}. The traces of the enhancement may be left as higher order correlation functions, that is, as non-Gaussianity, the stochastic gravitational waves that are sourced by scalar-scalar mode couplings, as well as the primordial black holes that are formed by the gravitational collapse of the enhanced curvature perturbations. We first confirm that such a temporal enhancement indeed occurs by solving the linearized perturbation equations both numerically and analytically. We then derive an analytic expression of the full-order curvature perturbation which does not rely on the frequently used sudden decay approximation and is exact on super-horizon scales. By using this analytic formula, we provide expressions of the non-linearity parameters f_nl, tau_nl and g_nl. If both two curvatons contribute to the final curvature perturbations, the strong non-Gaussianity appears in the trispectrum rather than in the bispectrum. We also find a unique consistency relation between tau_nl and g_nl without f_nl. By using the second-order perturbation theory, we numerically show that the spectrum of the induced gravitational waves has a plateau corresponding to duration of the enhancement and such gravitational waves can be probed by ultimate-DECIGO and space-based atomic interferometers. We finally calculate the abundance of the primordial black holes and put a constraint on the amplitude of the enhanced curvature perturbations.

Extension of local-type inequality for the higher order correlation functions

For the local-type primordial perturbation, it is known that there is an inequality between the bispectrum and the trispectrum. By using the diagrammatic method, we develop a general formalism to systematically construct the similar inequalities up to any order correlation function. As an application, we explicitly derive all the inequalities up to six and eight-point functions.
