Non-Gaussianity in the modulated reheating scenario

We investigate the non-Gaussianity of primordial curvature perturbation in the modulated reheating scenario where the primordial perturbation is generated due to the spacial fluctuation of the inflaton decay rate to radiation. We use the $δN$ formalism to evaluate the trispectrum of curvature perturbation as well as its bispectrum. We give expressions for three non-linear parameters $f_{NL}, τ_{NL}$ and $g_{NL}$ in the modulated reheating scenario. If the intrinsic non-Gaussianity of scalar field fluctuations and third derivative of the decay rate with respect to scalar fields are negligibly small, $g_{NL}$ has at least the same order of magnitude as $f_{NL}$. We also give general inequality between $f_{NL}$ and $τ_{NL}$ which is true for other inflationary scenarios as long as primordial non-Gaussianity comes from super-horizon evolution.

Primordial Non-Gaussianity in Multi-Scalar Slow-Roll Inflation

We analyze the non-Gaussianity for primordial curvature perturbations generated in multi-scalar slow-roll inflation model including the model with non-separable potential by making use of $δN$ formalism. Many authors have investigated the possibility of large non-Gaussianity for the models with separable potential, and they have found that the non-linear parameter, $f_{NL}$, is suppressed by the slow-roll parameters. We show that for the non-separable models $f_{NL}$ is given by the product of a factor which is suppressed by the slow-roll parameters and a possible enhancement factor which is given by exponentials of quantities of O(1).

Generating the primordial curvature perturbations in preheating

We show that the primordial curvature perturbations may originate not from the quantum fluctuations of inflaton during inflation but from isocurvature perturbations which are amplified during preheating after inflation. We consider a simple preheating model, whose potential is given by $V(ϕ, χ)={1/4}λϕ^4+{1/2}g^2 ϕ^2 χ^2$ with $g^2/λ=2$, as a possible realization of generating curvature perturbations during preheating. We make use of the $δN$ formalism which requires only knowledge of the homogeneous background solutions in order to evaluate the evolution of curvature perturbations on super-horizon scales. We solve the background equations numerically and find that the amplitude and the spectral index of curvature perturbations originating from preheating can be tuned to the observed values if the isocurvature perturbations at the end of inflation is not suppressed on super-horizon scales. We also point out that the tensor to scalar ratio in ${1/4}λϕ^4$ inflation model can be significantly lowered, hence letting the ${1/4}λϕ^4$ model, which is ruled out by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data combined with SDSS data, get back into the observationally allowed region.

Black hole production in tachyonic preheating

We present fully non-linear simulations of a self-interacting scalar field in the early universe undergoing tachyonic preheating. We find that density perturbations on sub-horizon scales which are amplified by tachyonic instability maintain long range correlations even during the succeeding parametric resonance, in contrast to the standard models of preheating dominated by parametric resonance. As a result the final spectrum exhibits memory and is not universal in shape. We find that throughout the subsequent era of parametric resonance the equation of state of the universe is almost dust-like, hence the Jeans wavelength is much smaller than the horizon scale. If our 2D simulations are accurate reflections of the situation in 3D, then there are wide regions of parameter space ruled out by over-production of black holes. It is likely however that realistic parameter values, consistent with COBE/WMAP normalisation, are safetly outside this black hole over-production region.

Exact Wave Propagation in a Spacetime with a Cosmic String

We present exact solutions of the massless Klein-Gordon equation in a spacetime in which an infinite straight cosmic string resides. The first solution represents a plane wave entering perpendicular to the string direction. We also present and analyze a solution with a static point-like source. In the short wavelength limit these solutions approach the results obtained by using the geometrical optics approximation: magnification occurs if the observer lies in front of the string within a strip of angular width $8πGμ$, where $μ$ is the string tension. We find that when the distance from the observer to the string is less than $ 10^{-3} {(G μ)}^{-2}λ\sim 150 {\rm Mpc} (λ/{\rm AU}) (Gμ/10^{-8})^{-2}$, where $λ$ is the wave length, the magnification is significantly reduced compared with the estimate based on the geometrical optics due to the diffraction effect. For gravitational waves from neutron star(NS)-NS mergers the several lensing events per year may be detected by DECIGO/BBO.

Scattering of Gravitational Waves by the Weak Gravitational Fields of Lens Objects

We consider the scattering of the gravitational waves by the weak gravitational fields of lens objects. We obtain the scattered gravitational waveform by treating the gravitational potential of the lens to first order, i.e. using the Born approximation. We find that the effect of scattering on the waveform is roughly given by the Schwarzschild radius of the lens divided by the wavelength of gravitational wave for a compact lens object. If the lenses are smoothly distributed, the effect of scattering is of the order of the convergence field $κ$ along the line of sight to the source. In the short wavelength limit, the amplitude is magnified by $1+κ$, which is consistent with the result in weak gravitational lensing.

Wave propagation in a weak gravitational field and the validity of the thin lens approximation

Wave effects can be important for the gravitational lensing of gravitational waves. In such a case, wave optics must be used in stead of geometric optics. We consider a plane wave entering a lens object and solve numerically the wave equation for three lens models: the uniform density sphere, the singular isothermal sphere, and the Hernquist model. By comparing our numerical solutions with the analytical solutions under the thin lens approximation, we evaluate the error of this approximation. The results show that the relative error of the thin lens approximation is small if the geometrical thickness of the lens is much smaller than the distance between the lens and the observer.

Are black holes over-produced during preheating?

We provide a simple but robust argument that primordial black hole (PBH) production generically does {\em not} exceed astrophysical bounds during the resonant preheating phase after inflation. This conclusion is supported by fully nonlinear lattice simulations of various models in two and three dimensions which include rescattering but neglect metric perturbations. We examine the degree to which preheating amplifies density perturbations at the Hubble scale and show that at the end of the parametric resonance, power spectra are universal, with no memory of the power spectrum at the end of inflation. In addition we show how the probability distribution of density perturbations changes from exponential on very small scales to Gaussian when smoothed over the Hubble scale -- the crucial length for studies of primordial black hole formation -- hence justifying the standard assumption of Gaussianity.
