Phase Transitions at Unusual Values of $θ$

We calculate the $θ$ dependence in a cousin of QCD, where the vacuum structure can be analyzed exactly. The theory is $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(2)$ gauge theory with $N_F=0,1,2,3$ flavors of fundamentals, explicitly broken to $\mathcal{N}=1$ via an adjoint superpotential, and coupled to anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB). The hierarchy $m_{AMSB}\ll μ_{\mathcal{N}=1}\ll Λ$ ensures the validity of our IR analysis. As expected from ordinary QCD, the vacuum energy is a function of $θ$ which undergoes 1st order phase transitions between different vacua where the various dyons condense. For $N_F=0$ we find the expected phase transition at $θ=π$, while for $N_F=1,2,3$ we find phase transitions at fractional values of $π$.

Discrete Anomaly Matching for the Pouliot Type Dualities

We compute the 't Hooft anomalies of discrete symmetries in the Pouliot type dual theories and check their anomaly matching conditions. The Pouliot type dual theories we will consider in this paper are two dual pairs; the dual pair of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theories of a $Spin(7)$ gauge theory with spinors and a $SU(N_f-4)$ gauge theory with a symmetric tensor, fundamentals and singlets, and the other dual pair of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theories of a $Spin(10)$ gauge theory with a spinor and vectors and a $SU(N_f-5)$ gauge theory with a symmetric tensor, fundamentals and singlets. We will show that the both pairs satisfy the discrete anomaly matching conditions.

5D SYM on 3D Deformed Spheres

We reconsider the relation of superconformal indices of superconformal field theories of class S with five-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory compactified on the product space of a round three-sphere and a Riemann surface. We formulate the five-dimensional theory in supersymmetric backgrounds preseving N=2 and N=1 supersymmetries and discuss a subtle point in the previous paper concerned with the partial twisting on the Riemann surface. We further compute the partition function by localization of the five-dimensional theory on a squashed three-sphere in N=2 and N=1 supersymmetric backgrounds and on an ellipsoid three-sphere in an N=1 supersymmetric background.

Holographic Interpolation between $a$ and $F$

An interpolating function $\tilde F$ between the $a$-anomaly coefficient in even dimensions and the free energy on an odd-dimensional sphere has been proposed recently and is conjectured to monotonically decrease along any renormalization group flow in continuous dimension $d$. We examine $\tilde F$ in the large-$N$ CFT's in $d$ dimensions holographically described by the Einstein-Hilbert gravity in the AdS$_{d+1}$ space. We show that $\tilde F$ is a smooth function of $d$ and correctly interpolates the $a$ coefficients and the free energies. The monotonicity of $\tilde F$ along an RG flow follows from the analytic continuation of the holographic $c$-theorem to continuous $d$, which completes the proof of the conjecture.

5D SYM and 2D q-Deformed YM

We study the AGT-like conjectured relation of a four-dimensional gauge theory on the direct product of a three-sphere and a circle to two-dimensional q-deformed Yang-Mills theory on a Riemann surface by using a five-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on the direct product of the three-sphere and the Riemann surface, following the conjectured relation of the six-dimensional N=(2,0) theory on the circle to the five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. Our results are in perfect agreement with both of the conjectures.

5D SYM on 3D Sphere and 2D YM

It is shown by using localization that in five-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a three-dimensional sphere, correlation functions in a sector are identical to correlation functions in two-dimensional bosonic Yang-Mills theory.

A Note on Kahler Potential of Charged Matter in F-theory

We study the Kahler potential of charged matter fields, whose profiles have a peak on their matter curve --- on an "intersection" of 7-branes, in an F-theory compactification. It is shown that the Kahler potential is exactly given by the integral over the matter curve, but not by the integral over the whole GUT surface of 7-branes.

Constraints on GUT 7-brane Topology in F-theory

We study the relation between phenomenological requirements and the topology of the surfaces that GUT 7-branes wrap in F-theory compactifications. In addition to the exotic matter free condition in the hypercharge flux scenario of SU(5)_{GUT} breaking, we analyze a new condition that comes from a discrete symmetry aligning the contributions to low-energy Yukawa matrices from a number of codimension-three singularity points. We see that the exotic matter free condition excludes Hirzebruch surfaces (except ${\mathbb F}_0$) as the GUT surface, correcting an existing proof in the literature. We further find that the discrete symmetry for the alignment of the Yukawa matrices excludes del Pezzo surfaces and a rational elliptic surface as the GUT surface. Therefore, some GUT 7-brane surfaces are good for some phenomenological requirements, but sometimes not for others, and this aspect should be kept in mind in geometry search in F-theory compactifications.

a-Maximization in N=1 Supersymmetric Spin(10) Gauge Theories

A summary is reported on our previous publications about four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric Spin(10) gauge theory with chiral superfields in the spinor and vector representations in the non-Abelian Coulomb phase. Carrying out the method of a-maximization, we studied decoupling operators in the infrared and the renormalization flow of the theory. We also give a brief review on the non-Abelian Coulomb phase of the theory after recalling the unitarity bound and the a-maximization procedure in four-dimensional conformal field theory. This is a review article invited to International Journal of Modern Physics A.

More on Dimension-4 Proton Decay Problem in F-theory -- Spectral Surface, Discriminant Locus and Monodromy

Factorized spectral surface scenario has been considered as one of solutions to the dimension-4 proton decay problem in supersymmetric compactifications of F-theory. It has been formulated in language of gauge theory on 7+1 dimensions, but the gauge theories descriptions can capture physics of geometry of F-theory compactification only approximately at best. Given the severe constraint on the renormalizable couplings that lead to proton decay, it is worth studying without an approximation whether or not the proton decay operators are removed completely in this scenario. We clarify how the behavior of spectral surface and discriminant locus are related, study monodromy of 2-cycles in a Calabi--Yau 4-fold geometry, and find that the proton decay operators are likely to be generated in a simple factorization limit of the spectral surface. A list of loopholes in this study, and hence a list of chances to save the factorized spectral surface scenario, is also presented.

Flavor Structure in F-theory Compactifications

F-theory is one of frameworks in string theory where supersymmetric grand unification is accommodated, and all the Yukawa couplings and Majorana masses of right-handed neutrinos are generated. Yukawa couplings of charged fermions are generated at codimension-3 singularities, and a contribution from a given singularity point is known to be approximately rank 1. Thus, the approximate rank of Yukawa matrices in low-energy effective theory of generic F-theory compactifications are minimum of either the number of generations N_gen = 3 or the number of singularity points of certain types. If there is a geometry with only one E_6 type point and one D_6 type point over the entire 7-brane for SU(5) gauge fields, F-theory compactified on such a geometry would reproduce approximately rank-1 Yukawa matrices in the real world. We found, however, that there is no such geometry. Thus, it is a problem how to generate hierarchical Yukawa eigenvalues in F-theory compactifications. A solution in the literature so far is to take an appropriate factorization limit. In this article, we propose an alternative solution to the hierarchical structure problem (which requires to tune some parameters) by studying how zero mode wavefunctions depend on complex structure moduli. In this solution, the N_gen x N_gen CKM matrix is predicted to have only N_gen entries of order unity without an extra tuning of parameters, and the lepton flavor anarchy is predicted for the lepton mixing matrix. We also obtained a precise description of zero mode wavefunctions near the E_6 type singularity points, where the up-type Yukawa couplings are generated.

Codimension-3 Singularities and Yukawa Couplings in F-theory

F-theory is one of the frameworks where all the Yukawa couplings of grand unified theories are generated and their computation is possible. The Yukawa couplings of charged matter multiplets are supposed to be generated around codimension-3 singularity points of a base complex 3-fold, and that has been confirmed for the simplest type of codimension-3 singularities in recent studies. However, the geometry of F-theory compactifications is much more complicated. For a generic F-theory compactification, such issues as flux configuration around the codimension-3 singularities, field-theory formulation of the local geometry and behavior of zero-mode wavefunctions have virtually never been addressed before. We address all these issues in this article, and further discuss nature of Yukawa couplings generated at such singularities. In order to calculate the Yukawa couplings of low-energy effective theory, however, the local descriptions of wavefunctions on complex surfaces and a global characterization of zero-modes over a complex curve have to be combined together. We found the relation between them by re-examining how chiral charged matters are characterized in F-theory compactification. An intrinsic definition of spectral surfaces in F-theory turns out to be the key concept. As a biproduct, we found a new way to understand the Heterotic--F theory duality, which improves the precision of existing duality map associated with codimension-3 singularities.

Reheating in Chaotic D-Term Inflation

A simple model is discussed to give rise to successful reheating in chaotic D-term inflation with a quadratic inflaton potential, introducing a trilinear coupling in the Kähler potential. Leptogenesis through the inflaton decay is also discussed in this model.

Gauge Invariant Overlaps for Classical Solutions in Open String Field Theory

We calculate gauge invariant observables for Schnabl's solution with analytic method and with the level truncation approximation. We also compute them for the numerical solution initially obtained by Sen and Zwiebach in the level truncation approximation to compare with the one for Schnabl's solution. The results are consistent with the expectation that they may be gauge equivalent. We briefly discuss the gauge invariant observables and the action for a marginal solution with a nonsingular current.

Schnabl's Solution and Boundary States in Open String Field Theory

We discuss that Schnabl's solution is an off-shell extension of the boundary state describing a D-brane in the closed string sector. It gives the physical meaning of the gauge invariant overlaps for the solution in our previous paper and supports Ellwood's recent proposal in the operator formalism.

New D-term chaotic inflation in supergravity and leptogenesis

We present a new model of D-term dominated chaotic inflation in supergravity. The F-flat direction present in this model is lifted by the dominant D-term, which leads to chaotic inflation and subsequent reheating. No cosmic string is formed after inflation because the U(1) gauge symmetry is broken during inflation. The leptogenesis scenario via the inflaton decay in our D-term chaotic inflation scenario is also discussed.

Chaotic D-Term Inflation

A simple model for chaotic inflation in supergravity is proposed. The model is N=1 supersymmetric massive U(1) gauge theory via the Stuckelberg superfield and gives rise to D-term inflation with a quadratic term of inflaton in the potential. The Fayet-Iliopoulos field plays a role of the inflaton.
