Relativistic Hydrodynamics at RHIC and LHC

Recent development of a hydrodynamic model is discussed by putting an emphasis on realistic treatment of the early and late stages in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The model, which incorporates a hydrodynamic description of the quark-gluon plasma with a kinetic approach of hadron cascades, is applied to analysis of elliptic flow data at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider energy. It is predicted that the elliptic flow parameter based on the hybrid model increases with the collision energy up to the Large Hadron Collider energy.

Elliptic Flow from a Hybrid CGC, Full 3D Hydro and Hadronic Cascade Model

We investigate the robustness of the discovery of the perfect fluid through comparison of hydrodynamic calculations with the elliptic flow coefficient v_2 at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV. Employing the Glauber model for initial entropy density distributions, the centrality dependence of v_2 is reasonably reproduced by using an ideal fluid description of the early QGP stage followed by a hadronic cascade in the late hadronic stage. On the other hand, initial conditions based on the Colour Glass Condensate model are found to generate larger elliptic flow due to larger initial eccentricity epsilon. We further predict v_2/epsilon at a fixed impact parameter as a function of collision energy sqrt{s_{NN}} up to the LHC energy.

Perfect Fluidity of the Quark Gluon Plasma Core as Seen through its Dissipative Hadronic Corona

The agreement of hydrodynamic predictions of differential elliptic flow and radial flow patterns with Au+Au data is one of the main lines of evidence suggesting the nearly perfect fluid properties of the strongly coupled Quark Gluon Plasma, sQGP, produced at RHIC. We study the sensitivity of this conclusion to different hydrodynamic assumptions on chemical and thermal freezeout after the sQGP hadronizes. We show that if chemical freezeout occurs at the hadronization time, the differential elliptic flow for pions increase with proper time in the late hadronic phase until thermal freezeout and leads to a discrepancy with the data. In contrast, if both chemical and thermal equilibrium are maintained past the hadronization, then the mean pT per pion increases in a way that accidentally preserves v2(pT) from the sQGP phase in agreement with the data, but at the cost of the agreement with the hadronic yields. In order that all the data on hadronic ratios, radial flow, and differential elliptic flow be reproduced, the sQGP must expand with a minimal viscosity, η_Q, that is however even greater than the viscosity, η_H, of its hadronic corona. However, because of the large entropy density difference of the two phases of QCD matter, the larger viscosity in the sQGP phase leads to nearly perfect fluid flow while the smaller entropy density of the hadronic corona strongly hinders the applicability of Euler hydrodynamics. The ``perfect fluid'' property of the sQGP is thus not due to a sudden reduction of the viscosity at the critical temperature Tc, but to a sudden increase of the entropy density of QCD matter and is therefore an important signature of deconfinement.

Hadronic dissipative effects on elliptic flow in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the elliptic flow coefficient v_2(eta,b) in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)=200 A GeV as a function of pseudorapidity eta and impact parameter b. Using a hybrid approach which combines early ideal fluid dynamical evolution with late hadronic rescattering, we demonstrate strong dissipative effects from the hadronic rescattering stage on the elliptic flow. With Glauber model initial conditions, hadronic dissipation is shown to be sufficient to fully explain the differences between measured v_2 values and ideal hydrodynamic predictions. Initial conditions based on the Color Glass Condensate model generate larger elliptic flow and seem to require additional dissipation during the early quark-gluon plasma stage in order to achieve agreement with experiment.

Perfect fluidity of sQGP core and dissipative hadronic corona

We can establish a new picture, the perfect fluid sQGP core and the dissipative hadronic corona, of the space-time evolution of produced matter in relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC. It is also shown that the picture works well also in the forward rapidity region through an analysis based on a new class of the hydro-kinetic model and is a manifestation of deconfinement.

Hydrodynamic afterburner for the Color Glass Condensate and the parton energy loss

We take hydrodynamic initial conditions in relativistic heavy ion collisions from the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) picture through the kT factorization formula. Gluon distributions produced from the CGC are found to provide good initial conditions for the hydrodynamic simulations in Au + Au collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energies. We reproduce the centrality, rapidity, and energy dependences of multiplicity within this approach. We also investigate the energy loss of high pT partons in the dense thermalized medium created from colliding two CGC's. We find that our results on the centrality dependence of nuclear modification factors for pions and back-to-back correlation for charged hadrons at midrapidity are consistent with the RHIC data up to semicentral events. Whereas, our approach in which jets are calculated from perturbative QCD 2->2 processes predicts less suppression at forward rapidity region compared to the BRAHMS data in Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Hydrodynamic afterburner for the CGC at RHIC

Firstly, we give a short review about the hydrodynamic model and its application to the elliptic flow phenomena in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Secondly, we show the first approach to construct a unified model for the description of the dynamics in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Hydrodynamic models

Recent developments based on relativistic hydrodynamic models in high energy heavy ion collisions are discussed. I focus especially on how hydrodynamics works at RHIC energies and how one can use the most of it in analyses of jet quenching and thermal electromagnetic radiations. I also comment on improvement of initial conditions and viscosity in hydrodynamic models.

CGC, Hydrodynamics, and the Parton Energy Loss

Hadron spectra in Au+Au collisions at RHIC are calculated by hydrodynamics with initial conditions from the Color Glass Condensate (CGC). Minijet components with parton energy loss in medium are also taken into account by using parton density obtained from hydrodynamical simulations. We found that CGC provides a good initial condition for hydrodynamics in Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Interplay between soft and hard hadronic components for identified hadrons in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We investigate the transverse dynamics in Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_NN}=200 GeV by emphasis upon the interplay between soft and hard components through p_T dependences of particle spectra, ratios of yields, suppression factors, and elliptic flow for identified hadrons. From hydrodynamics combined with traversing minijets which go through jet quenching in the hot medium, we calculate interactions of hard jets with the soft hydrodynamic components. It is shown by the explicit dynamical calculations that the hydrodynamic radial flow and the jet quenching of hard jets are the keys to understand the differences among the hadron spectra for pions, kaons, and protons. This leads to the natural interpretation for N_p/N_π~ 1, R_{AA} >~ 1 for protons, and v_2^p > v_2^πrecently observed in the intermediate transverse momentum region at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).

Pseudorapidity dependence of parton energy loss in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We analyze the recent data from the BRAHMS Collaboration on the pseudorapidity dependence of nuclear modification factors in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV by using the full three dimensional hydrodynamic simulations for the density effects on parton energy loss. We first compute the transverse spectra at $η=0$ and 2.2, and next take a ratio $R_η=R_{AA}(η=2.2)/R_{AA}(η=0)$, where $R_{AA}$ is a nuclear modification factor. It is shown that hydrodynamic components account for $R_η\simeq 1$ at low $p_\mathrm{T}$ and that quenched pQCD components lead $R_η < 1$ at high $p_\mathrm{T}$ which are consistent with the data. Strong suppression at $η=2.2$ is compatible with the parton energy loss in the final state.

Back-to-back correlations of high p_T hadrons in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We investigate the suppression factor and the azimuthal correlation function for high $p_T$ hadrons in central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV by using a dynamical model in which hydrodynamics is combined with explicitly traveling jets. We study the effects of parton energy loss in a hot medium, intrinsic $k_T$ of partons in a nucleus, and $p_{\perp}$ broadening of jets on the back-to-back correlations of high $p_T$ hadrons. Parton energy loss is found to be a dominant effect on the reduction of the away-side peaks in the correlation function.

Comparison of space-time evolutions of hot/dense matter in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=17 and 130 GeV relativistic heavy ion collisions based on a hydrodynamical model

Based on a hydrodynamical model, we compare 130 GeV/$A$ Au+Au collisions at RHIC and 17 GeV/$A$ Pb+Pb collisions at SPS. The model well reproduces the single-particle distributions of both RHIC and SPS. The numerical solution indicates that huge amount of collision energy in RHIC is mainly used to produce a large extent of hot fluid rather than to make a high temperature matter; longitudinal extent of the hot fluid in RHIC is much larger than that of SPS and initial energy density of the fluid is only 5% higher than the one in SPS. The solution well describes the HBT radii at SPS energy but shows some deviations from the ones at RHIC.

Energy loss in high energy heavy ion collisions from the Hydro+Jet model

We investigate the effect of energy loss of jets in high energy heavy ion collisions by using a full three-dimensional space-time evolution of a fluid combined with (mini-)jets that are explicitly evolved in space-time. In order to fit the pi^0 data for the Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 130 GeV, the space-time averaged energy loss dE/dx(tau <= 3 fm/c) = 0.36 GeV/fm is extracted within the model. It is found that most energy loss occurs at the very early time less than 2 fm/c in the QGP phase and that energy loss in the mixed phase is negligible within our parameterization for jet energy loss. This is a consequence of strong expansion of the system.

Collective flow and two-pion correlations from a relativistic hydrodynamic model with early chemical freeze out

We investigate the effect of early chemical freeze-out on radial flow, elliptic flow and HBT radii by using a fully three dimensional hydrodynamic model. When we take account of the early chemical freeze-out, the space-time evolution of temperature in the hadron phase is considerably different from the conventional model in which chemical equilibrium is always assumed. As a result, we find that radial and elliptic flows are suppressed and that the lifetime and the spatial size of the fluid are reduced. We analyze the p_t spectrum, the differential elliptic flow, and the HBT radii at the RHIC energy by using hydrodynamics with chemically non-equilibrium equation of state.
