Extraction of Hadron Interactions above Inelastic Threshold in Lattice QCD

We propose a new method to extract hadron interactions above inelastic threshold from the Nambu-Bethe-Salpter amplitude in lattice QCD. We consider the scattering such as $A+B\rightarrow C+D$, where $A,B,C,D$ are names of different 1-particle states. An extension to cases where particle productions occur during scatterings is also discussed.

Higgs Mechanism with Type-II Nambu-Goldstone Bosons at Finite Chemical Potential

When the spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs for systems without Lorentz covariance, there arises possible mismatch, $N_{\rm NG} < N_{\rm BG}$, between numbers of Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons ($N_{\rm NG}$) and the numbers of broken generators ($N_{\rm BG}$. In such a situation, so-called type-II NG bosons emerge. We study how the gauge bosons acquire masses through the Higgs mechanism under this mismatch by employing gauge theories with complex scalar field at finite chemical potential and by enforcing "charge" neutrality. To separate the physical spectra from unphysical ones, the $R_ξ$ gauge is adopted. Not only massless NG bosons but also massive scalar bosons generated by the chemical potential are absorbed into spatial components of the gauge bosons. Although the chemical potential induces a non-trivial mixings among the scalar bosons and temporal components of the gauge bosons, it does not affect the structure of the physical spectra, so that the total number of physical modes is not modified even for $N_{\rm NG} < N_{\rm BG}$.

Nucleon-Nucleon Potential and its Non-locality in Lattice QCD

By the quenched lattice QCD simulation for two nucleons with finite scattering energy, validity of the delivative expansion of the general nucleon-nucleon potential U(r,r') = V(r, {\nabla}_r) δ^3(r-r') is studied. The relative kinetic energy between two nucleons is introduced through the anti-periodic boundary condition in the spatial directions. On a hypercubic lattice with the lattice spacing a ~ 0.137 fm and the spatial extent L_s ~ 4.4 fm with the pion mass m_π ~ 530 MeV, the local potentials for two different energies (E ~ 0 MeV and 45 MeV) are compared and found to be identical within statistical errors, which validates the local approximation of U(r,r') up to E=45 MeV for the central and tensor potentials. Central potentials in the spin-singlet channel for different orbital angular momentums (l=0 and l=2) at E ~ 45 MeV are also found to be the same within the errors, which also supports the local approximation.

Bound H-dibaryon in Flavor SU(3) Limit of Lattice QCD

The flavor-singlet H-dibaryon, which has strangeness -2 and baryon number 2, is studied by the approach recently developed for the baryon-baryon interactions in lattice QCD. The flavor-singlet central potential is derived from the spatial and imaginary-time dependence of the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave function measured in N_f=3 full QCD simulations with the lattice size of L = 2, 3, 4 fm. The potential is found to be insensitive to the volume, and it leads to a bound H-dibaryon with the binding energy of 30 - 40 MeV for the pseudo-scalar meson mass of 673 - 1015 MeV.

Lattice Nuclear Force

We derive an energy-independent and non-local potential for the baryon-baryon interaction from the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter amplitude on the lattice. The method is applied to the nucleon-nucleon interactions with the (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD simulations. The central and tensor potentials are obtained as leading order terms of the velocity expansion of the non-local potential: The central potential has a repulsive core surrounded by an attractive well, while the tensor potential has intermediate and long range attractions. Validity of the velocity expansions tested by the nucleon-nucleon interaction with finite relative momentum. Interactions among octet-baryons in the flavor SU(3) limit are also studied in full QCD simulations to unravel the origin of the repulsive core and the possible existence of $H$-dibaryon.

Non-locality of the nucleon-nucleon potential from Lattice QCD

The Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave function for two nucleons on the lattice has been shown to yield a non-local and energy-independent nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential, U(r,r'). In practice, the derivative expansion of U(r,r') is currently employed to determine the potential at low energies. In this report, we study the magnitude of non-locality to check the convergence of such a derivative expansion. With quenched lattice QCD at m_π= 530MeV, we compare the NN potentials at the center of mass energy E ~ 0 MeV and at E ~ 45 MeV. We also investigate the angular momentum dependence of the spin singlet potential, by comparing the potentials in 1S0 and 1D2 channels. We find that the non-locality and the angular momentum dependence in the above energy range are negligible within statistical errors.

Transport coefficients of causal dissipative relativistic hydrodynamics in quenched lattice simulations

Transport coefficients of causal dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics (CDR) are studied in quenched lattice simulations. CDR describes the behavior of relativistic non-Newtonian fluids in which the relaxation time appears as a new transport coefficient besides the shear and bulk viscosities. It was recently shown that these coefficients can be given by the temporal-correlation functions of the energy-momentum tensors as in the case of the Green-Kubo-Nakano formula. By using the new formula in CDR, we study the transport coefficients with lattice simulations in pure SU(3) gauge theory. After defining the energy-momentum tensor on the lattice, we extract a ratio of the shear viscosity to the relaxation time which is given only in terms of the static correlation functions. The simulations are performed on $24^3 \times 4$--16 lattices with $β_{_{\rm LAT}} = 6.0$, which corresponds to the temperature range of $0.5 \simle T/T_c \simle 1.8$, where $T_c$ is the critical temperature.

Chiral symmetry of graphene and strong coupling lattice gauge theory

We model the electrons on a monolayer graphene in terms of the compact and non-compact U(1) lattice gauge theories. The system is analyzed by the strong coupling expansion and is shown to be an insulator due to dynamical gap formation in/around the strong coupling limit. This is similar to the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in strong coupling gauge theories. The results from the compact and non-compact formulations are compared up to the next-to-leading order of the strong coupling expansion. Excitonic modes and their dispersion relations in the insulating phase are also investigated: it is found that there arises a pseudo-Nambu--Goldstone mode obeying the Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner type formula.

BEC-BCS crossover driven by the axial anomaly in the NJL model

We study the QCD phase structure in the three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, incorporating the chiral-diquark interplay due to the axial anomaly. We demonstrate that for a certain range of model parameters, the low temperature critical point predicted by a Ginzburg-Landau analysis appears in the phase diagram. In addition, we show that the axial anomaly presents a new scenario for a possible BEC-BCS crossover in the color-flavor locked phase of QCD.

Chiral Gap and Collective Excitations in Monolayer Graphene from Strong Coupling Expansion of Lattice Gauge Theory

Using the strong coupling expansion of the compact and non-compact U(1) lattice gauge theory for monolayer graphene, we show analytically that fermion bandgap and pseudo Nambu--Goldstone exciton (pi-exciton) are dynamically generated due to chiral symmetry breaking. The mechanism is similar to the generation of quark mass and pion excitation in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We derive a formula for the pi-exciton analogous to the Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner (GOR) relation in QCD. Experimental confirmation of the GOR relation on a suspended monolayer graphene would be a clear evidence of chiral symmetry breaking.

Baryon-Baryon Interactions in the Flavor SU(3) Limit from Full QCD Simulations on the Lattice

We investigate baryon-baryon (BB) interactions in the 3-flavor full QCD simulations with degenerate quark masses for all flavors. The BB potentials in the orbital S-wave are extracted from the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave functions measured on the lattice. We observe strong flavor-spin dependences of the BB potentials at short distances. In particular, a strong repulsive core exists in the flavor-octet and spin-singlet channel (the 8_s representation), while an attractive core appears in the flavor singlet channel (the 1 representation). We discuss a relation of such flavor-spin dependence with the Pauli exclusion principle in the quark level. Possible existence of an H-dibaryon resonance above the Lambda-Lambda threshold is also discussed.

The NJL model of dense three-flavor matter with axial anomaly: the low temperature critical point and BEC-BCS diquark crossover

We study the QCD phase structure in the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, incorporating the interplay between the chiral and diquark condensates induced by the axial anomaly. We demonstrate that for an appropriate range of parameters of the model, the interplay leads to the low temperature critical point in the phase structure predicted by a previous Ginzburg-Landau analysis. We also show that a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of diquark molecules emerges in the intermediate density region, and as a result, a BEC-BCS crossover is realized with increasing quark chemical potential.

Theoretical Foundation of the Nuclear Force in QCD and its applications to Central and Tensor Forces in Quenched Lattice QCD Simulations

We present full accounts of a method to extract nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials from the Bethe-Salpter amplitude in lattice QCD. The method is applied to two nucleons on the lattice with quenched QCD simulations. By disentangling the mixing between the S-state and the D-state, we obtain central and tensor potentials in the leading order of the velocity expansion of the non-local NN potential. The spatial structure and the quark mass dependence of the potentials are analyzed in detail.

Hadron properties in the nuclear medium

The QCD vacuum shows the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry. In the hot/dense QCD medium, the chiral order parameter such as $ < \bar q q > $ is expected to change as function of temperature $T$ and density $ρ$ of the medium, and its experimental detection is one of the main challenges in modern hadron physics. In this article, we discuss theoretical expectations for the in-medium hadron spectra associated with partial restoration of chiral symmetry and the current status of experiments with an emphasis on the measurements of properties of mesons produced in near-ground-state nuclei.

Quantum Phase Transitions in Dense QCD

Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at finite temperature, $T$, and quark chemical potential, $μ$, has a rich phase structure: at low $T$ and low $μ$, the Nambu-Goldstone (NG) phase with nearly massless pions is realized by the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry through condensation of quark-anti-quark pairs, while, at low $T$ and high $μ$, a Fermi liquid of deconfined quarks is expected to appear as a consequence of asymptotic freedom. Furthermore, in such a cold quark matter, condensation of quark-quark pairs leads to the color superconductivity (CSC). At high $T$ for arbitrary $μ$, all the condensates melt away and a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is realized. The experimental exploration of thermal phase transition from the NG phase to QGP is being actively pursued in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider), and will be continued in the future at LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The quantum phase transition from the NG phase to the CSC at low $T$ is also relevant to heavy-ion collisions at moderate energies, and is of interest in the interiors of neutron stars and possible quark stars. In this Chapter, after a brief introduction to the basic properties of QCD, the current status of the QCD phase structure and associated quantum phase transitions will be summarized with particular emphasis on the symmetry realization of each phase. Possible connection between the physics of QCD and that of ultracold atoms is also discussed.

Langevin + Hydrodynamics Approach to Heavy Quark Propagation and Correlation in QGP

We develop a relativistic Langevin dynamics under the background of strongly interacting quark-gluon fluid described by the (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics. The drag force acting on charm and bottom quarks is parametrized according to the formula obtained from the anti-de-Sitter space/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. In this setup, we calculate the nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm{AA}}$ for the single-electrons from the charm and bottom quarks to extract the magnitude of the drag force from the PHENIX and STAR data. The $R_{\rm{AA}}$ for single-electrons with $p_{T}\geq 3$ GeV indicates that the drag force is close to the AdS/CFT prediction. Effects of the drag force on the elliptic flow of single-electrons are also discussed. Moreover, we predict the electron-muon correlation which is closely related to the heavy-quark pair correlation in hot matter.

Simulating dense QCD matter with ultracold atomic boson-fermion mixtures

We delineate, as an analog of two-flavor dense quark matter, the phase structure of a many-body mixture of atomic bosons and fermions in two internal states with a tunable boson-fermion attraction. The bosons b correspond to diquarks, and the fermions f to unpaired quarks. For weak b-f attraction, the system is a mixture of a Bose-Einstein condensate and degenerate fermions, while for strong attraction composite b-f fermions N, analogs of the nucleon, are formed, which are superfluid due to the N-N attraction in the spin-singlet channel. We determine the symmetry breaking patterns at finite temperature as a function of the b-f coupling strength, and relate the phase diagram to that of dense QCD.
