Spin dynamics of a trapped spin-1 Bose Gas above the Bose-Einstein transition temperature

We study collective spin oscillations in a spin-1 Bose gas above the Bose-Einstein transition temperature. Starting from the Heisenberg equation of motion, we derive a kinetic equation describing the dynamics of a thermal gas with the spin-1 degree of freedom. Applying the moment method to the kinetic equation, we study spin-wave collective modes with dipole symmetry. The dipole modes in the spin-1 system are found to be classified into the three type of modes. The frequency and damping rate are obtained as functions of the peak density. The damping rate is characterized by three relaxation times associated with collisions.

Damping of Condensate Oscillation of a Trapped Bose Gas in a One-Dimensional Optical Lattice at Finite Temperatures

We study damping of a dipole oscillation in a Bose-Condensed gas in a combined cigar-shaped harmonic trap and one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice potential at finite temperatures. In order to include the effect of thermal excitations in the radial direction, we derive a quasi-1D model of the Gross-Pitaeavskii equation and the Bogoliubov equations. We use the Popov approximation to calculate the temperature dependence of the condensate fraction with varying lattice depth. We then calculate the Landau damping rate of a dipole oscillation as a function of the lattice depth and temperature. The damping rate increases with increasing lattice depth, which is consistent with experimental observations. The magnitude of the damping rate is in reasonable agreement with experimental data. We also find that the damping rate has a strong temperature dependence, showing a sharp increase with increasing temperature. Finally, we emphasize the importance of the radial thermal excitations in both equilibrium properties and the Landau damping.

Coarse-Grained Finite-Temperature Theory for the Condensate in Optical Lattices

In this work, we derive a coarse-grained finite-temperature theory for a Bose condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice, in addition to a confining harmonic trap potential. We start from a two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action on the Schwinger-Keldysh closed-time contour path. In principle, this action involves all information of equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of the condensate and noncondensate atoms. By assuming an ansatz for the variational function, i.e., the condensate order parameter in an effective action, we derive a coarse-grained effective action, which describes the dynamics on the length scale much longer than a lattice constant. Using the variational principle, coarse-grained equations of motion for the condensate variables are obtained. These equations include a dissipative term due to collisions between condensate and noncondensate atoms, as well as noncondensate mean-field. To illustrate the usefulness of our formalism, we discuss a Landau instability of the condensate in optical lattices by using the coarse-grained generalized Gross-Pitaevskii hydrodynamics. We found that the collisional damping rate due to collisions between the condensate and noncondensate atoms changes sign when the condensate velocity exceeds a renormalized sound velocity, leading to a Landau instability consistent with the Landau criterion. Our results in this work give an insight into the microscopic origin of the Landau instability.

Landau damping: instability mechanism of superfluid Bose gases moving in optical lattices

We investigate Landau damping of Bogoliubov excitations in a dilute Bose gas moving in an optical lattice at finite temperatures. Using a 1D tight-binding model, we explicitly obtain the Landau damping rate, the sign of which determines the stability of the condensate. We find that the sign changes at a certain condensate velocity, which is exactly the same as the critical velocity determined by the Landau criterion of superfluidity. This coincidence of the critical velocities reveals the microscopic mechanism of the Landau instability. This instability mechanism is also consistent with the recent experiment suggesting that a thermal cloud plays a crucial role in breakdown of superfluids, since the thermal cloud is also vital in the Landau damping process. We also examine the possibility of simultaneous disappearance of all damping processes.

Hydrodynamics of Superfluid Bose Gases in an Optical Lattice at Finite Temperatures

Starting from an effective action for the order parameter field, we derive a coupled set of generalized hydrodynamic equations for a Bose condensate in an optical lattice at finite temperatures. Using the linearized hydrodynamic equations, we study the microscopic mechanism of the Landau instability due to the collisional damping process between condensate and noncondensate atoms. It is shown that the Landau criterion of the superfluidity for the uniform system is modified due to the presence of the periodic optical lattice potential.

Instability of a superfluid Bose gas induced by a locked thermal gas in an optical lattice

We use a dissipative Gross-Petaevskii equation derived from the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian to study the effect of the thermal component on the stability of a current-carrying superfluid state of a Bose gas in an optical lattice potential. We explicitly show that the superfluid state becomes unstable at certain quasi-momentum of the condensate due to a thermal component which is locked by an optical lattice potential. It is shown that this instability coincides with the Landau instability derived from the GP equation.

Frequency and damping of hydrodynamic modes in a trapped Bose-condensed gas

Recently it was shown that the Landau-Khalatnikov two-fluid hydrodynamics describes the collision-dominated region of a trapped Bose condensate interacting with a thermal cloud. We use these equations to discuss the low frequency hydrodynamic collective modes in a trapped Bose gas at finite temperatures. We derive a variational expressions based on these equations for both the frequency and damping of collective modes. A new feature is our use of frequency-dependent transport coefficients, which produce a natural cutoff by eliminating the collisionless low-density tail of the thermal cloud. Above the superfluid transition, our expression for the damping in trapped inhomogeneous gases is analogous to the result first obtained by Landau and Lifshitz for uniform classical fluids. We also use the moment method to discuss the crossover from the collisionless to the hydrodynamic region. Recent data for the monopole-quadrupole mode in the hydrodynamic region of a trapped gas of metastable $^4$He is discussed. We also present calculations for the damping of the analogous $m=0$ monopole-quadrupole condensate mode in the superfluid phase.

Landau-Khalatnikov two-fluid hydrodynamics of a trapped Bose gas

Starting from the quantum kinetic equation for the non-condensate atoms and the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate, we derive the two-fluid hydrodynamic equations of a trapped Bose gas at finite temperatures. We follow the standard Chapman-Enskog procedure, starting from a solution of the kinetic equation corresponding to the complete local equilibrium between the condensate and the non-condensate components. Our hydrodynamic equations are shown to reduce to a form identical to the well-known Landau-Khalatnikov two-fluid equations, with hydrodynamic damping due to the deviation from local equilibrium. The deviation from local equilibrium within the thermal cloud gives rise to dissipation associated with shear viscosity and thermal conduction. In addition, we show that effects due to the deviation from the diffusive local equilibrium between the condensate and the non-condensate (recently considered by Zaremba, Nikuni and Griffin) can be described by four frequency-dependent second viscosity transport coefficients. We also derive explicit formulas for all the transport coefficients. These results are used to introduce two new characteristic relaxation times associated with hydrodynamic damping. These relaxation times give the rate at which local equilibrium is reached and hence determine whether one is in the two-fluid hydrodynamic region.

Two-Fluid Hydrodynamics in Trapped Bose Gases and in Superfluid Helium

A review is given of recent theoretical work on the superfluid dynamics of trapped Bose gases at finite temperatures, where there is a significant fraction of non-condensate atoms. One can now reach large enough densities and collision cross-sections needed to probe the collective modes in the collision-dominated hydrodynamic region where the gas exhibits characteristic superfluid behavior involving the relative motions of the condensate and non-condensate components. The precise analogue of the Landau-Khalatnikov two-fluid hydrodynamic equations was recently derived from trapped Bose gases, starting from a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate macroscopic wavefunction and a kinetic equation for the non-condensate atoms.

Fluctuation-induced phase in CsCuCl3 in transverse magnetic field: Theory

CsCuCl3 is a quantum triangular antiferromagnet, ferromagnetically stacked, with an incommensurate (IC) structure due to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Because of the classical degeneracy caused by the frustration, fluctuations in CsCuCl3 have extraordinarily large effects, such as the phase transition in longitudinal magnetic field (normal to the planes, parallel to the IC wavenumber q) and the plateau in q in transverse field (perpendicular to q). We argue that fluctuations are responsible also for the new IC phase discovered in transverse field near the Neel temperature T_N, by T. Werner et al. [Solid State Commun. 102, p.609 (1997)]. We develop and analyse the corresponding minimal Landau theory; the effects of fluctuations on the frustration are included phenomenologically, by means of a biquadratic term. The Landau theory gives two IC phases, one familiar from previous studies; properties of the new IC phase, which occupies a pocket of the temperature-field phase diagram near T_N, agree qualitatively with those of the new phase found experimentally.

Quantum fluctuations in the incommensurate phase of CsCuCl3 under transverse magnetic field

In low magnetic field, the stacked, triangular antiferromagnet CsCuCl3 has a helical structure incommensurate (IC) in the chain direction. The IC wavenumber (from neutron-diffraction experiments) decreases with increasing field transverse to the chains, as predicted by classical theory, but then it has a plateau almost certainly caused by quantum fluctuations. Linear spin-wave theory fails because fluctuations have particularly large effects in the IC phase. An innovative phenomenological treatment of quantum fluctuations yields a plateau at approximately the observed value and the observed fields; it predicts a transition to the commensurate phase so far not observed. Results depend sensitively on a weak anisotropy.
