A note on knot fertility II

A knot $K$ is called $(m,n)$-fertile if for every prime knot $K'$ whose crossing number is less than or equal to $m$, there exists an $n$-crossing diagram of $K$ such that one can get $K'$ from the diagram by changing its over-under information. We give an obstruction for knot to be $(m,n)$-fertile. As application, we prove the finiteness of $(c(K)+f,c(K)+p)$-fertile knots for all $f,p$. We also discuss the nubmer of Seiefrt circle and writhe of minimum crossing diagrams.

Invariants of weakly successively almost positive links

As an extension of positive and almost positive diagrams and links, we study two classes of links we call successively almost positive and weakly successively almost positive links. We prove various properties of polynomial invariants and signatures of such links, extending previous results or answering open questions about positive or almost positive links. We discuss their minimal genus and fibering property and for the latter prove a fibering extension of Scharlemann-Thompson's theorem (valid for general links).

On constraints for knots to admit chirally cosmetic surgeries and their calculations

We discuss various constraints for knots in $S^{3}$ to admit chirally cosmetic surgeries, derived from invariants of 3-manifolds, such as, the quantum $SO(3)$-invariant, the rank of the Heegaard Floer homology, and finite type invariants. We apply them to show that a large portion (roughly 75$\%$) of knots which are neither amphicheiral nor $(2,p)$-torus knots with less than or equal to 10 crossings admits no chirally cosmetic surgeries.

Flat plumbing basket and contact structure

A flat plumbing basket is a Seifert surface consisting of a disk and bands contained in distinct pages of the disk open book decomposition of the 3-sphere. In this paper, we examine close connections between flat plumbing baskets and the contact structure supported by the open book. As an application we give lower bounds for the flat plumbing basket numbers and determine the flat plumbing basket numbers for various knots and links, including the torus links.

Generalized torsion for hyperbolic $3$--manifold groups with arbitrary large rank

Let $G$ be a group and $g$ a non-trivial element in $G$. If some non-empty finite product of conjugates of $g$ equals to the trivial element, then $g$ is called a generalized torsion element. To the best of our knowledge, we have no hyperbolic $3$--manifold groups with generalized torsion elements whose rank is explicitly known to be greater than two. The aim of this short note is to demonstrate that for a given integer $n > 1$ there are infinitely many closed hyperbolic $3$--manifolds $M_n$ which enjoy the property: (i) the Heegaard genus of $M_n$ is $n$, (ii) the rank of the fundamental group of $M_n$ is $n$, and (ii) the fundamental group of $M_n$ has a generalized torsion element. Furthermore, we may choose $M_n$ as homology lens spaces and so that the order of the generalized torsion element is arbitrarily large.

Successively almost positive links

As an extension of positive or almost positive diagrams and links, we introduce a notion of successively almost positive diagrams and links, and good successively almost positive diagrams and links. We review various properties of positive links or almost positive links, and explain how they can be extended to (good) successively almost positive links. Our investigation also leads to an improvement of known results of positive or almost positive links.

An obstruction of Gordian distance one and cosmetic crossings for genus one knots

We give an obstruction for genus one knots $K$, $K'$ to have the Gordian distance one by using the $0$th coefficient of the HOMFLT polynomials. As an application, we give a new constraint for genus one knot to admit a (generalized) cosmetic crossing. Combining known results, we prove the (generalized) cosmetic crossing conjecture for genus one pretzel knots.

A note on HOMFLY polynomial of positive braid links

For a positive braid link, a link represented as a closed positive braids, we determine the first few coefficients of its HOMFLY polynomial in terms of geometric invariants such as, the maximum euler characteristics, the number of split factors, and the number of prime factors. Our results give improvements of known results for Conway and Jones polynomial of positive braid links. In Appendix, we present a simpler proof of theorem of Cromwell, a positive braid diagram represent composite link if and only if the the diagram is composite.

A remark on a finiteness of purely cosmetic surgeries

By estimating the Turaev genus or the dealternation number, which leads to an estimate of knot floer thickness, in terms of the genus and the braid index, we show that a knot $K$ in $S^{3}$ does not admit purely cosmetic surgery whenever $g(K)\geq \frac{3}{2}b(K)$, where $g(K)$ and $b(K)$ denotes the genus and the braid index, respectively. In particular, this establishes a finiteness of purely cosmetic surgeries; for fixed $b$, all but finitely many knots with braid index $b$ satisfies the cosmetic surgery conjecture.

A quantitative Birman-Menasco finiteness theorem and its application to crossing number

Birman-Menasco proved that there are finitely many knots having a given genus and braid index. We give a quantitative version of Birman-Menasco finiteness theorem, an estimate of the crossing number of knots in terms of genus and braid index. This has various applications of crossing numbers, such as, the crossing number of connected sum or satellites.

A note on knot fertility

We show that a knot whose minimum crossing number $c(K)$ is even and greater than $30$ is not fertile; there exists a knot $K'$ with crossing number less than $c$ such that $K'$ is not obtained from a minimum crossing number diagram of $K$ by suitably changing the over-under information.

Generalized torsion and Dehn filling

A generalized torsion element is a non-trivial element such that some non-empty finite product of its conjugates is the identity. We construct a generalized torsion element of the fundamental group of a 3-manifold obtained by Dehn surgery along a knot in the 3-sphere.

On homogeneous quasipositive links

We discuss when homogeneous quasipositive links are positive. In particular, we show that a homogeneous diagram of a quasipositive link whose number of Seifert circles is equal to the braid index is a positive diagram.

A note on chirally cosmetic surgery on cable knots

We show that a $(p,q)$-cable of a non-trivial knot $K$ does not admit chirally cosmetic surgery for $q\neq 2$, or $q=2$ with additional assumptions. In particular, we show that $(p,q)$-cable of non-trivial knot $K$ does not admit chirally cosmetic surgery as long as the JSJ piece of knot exterior does not contain $(2,r)$-torus exterior. We also show that an iterated torus knot other than $(2,p)$-torus knot does not admit chirally cosmetic surgery.
