sbom-unifier: Integration Framework for Heterogeneous SBOMs

A Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) is a machine-readable inventory of software components, increasingly required for vulnerability management and license compliance. However, existing SBOM generation tools often leave many SPDX-defined fields missing or only partially populated, because different tools produce heterogeneous outputs with uneven field-level coverage. We present sbom-unifier, a framework that improves SBOM completeness through field-level integration and complementation of multiple tool outputs and file-level enrichment. Unlike existing tools that simply concatenate SBOMs without identifying records referring to the same component, sbom-unifier identifies components via Package URL (PURL), complements missing field values by a deterministic priority-based strategy, reconstructs cross-section references, and further enriches file-level fields. Across 90 open-source projects in 9 programming languages, sbom-unifier preserves high completeness for required fields and, over the 39 SPDX 2.3 required and optional fields, raises the fully covered rate by 8 percentage points and reduces the totally missing rate by 11 percentage points over the respective best-performing individual tools. sbom-unifier is available at https://github.com/MoriwakiYusuke/sbom-unifier.

How Do Developers Use Migration Guides? A Case Study of Log4j

Migration guides are a form of software documentation that helps developers address breaking changes introduced in library version updates. Prior studies have examined documents such as release notes, API reference manuals, and patch notes. However, research that focuses specifically on migration guides remains limited. Improving the usability and coverage of migration guides is essential for helping developers resolve breaking changes efficiently. Yet, we still lack a clear understanding of how migration guides are currently provided and how developers use them in practice. To fill this gap, we first investigate whether libraries known to introduce incompatibilities provide migration guides. We then conduct a detailed case study on Log4j, a library that has experienced large-scale breaking updates in the past. We empirically analyze how developers refer to and use the official migration guide in real-world projects. We find that pull request authors most frequently reference the migration guide in the pull request description, and that most references (82.81%) link to the entire guide rather than specific sections. We also find that developers use migration guides not only during major version updates but also during subsequent maintenance tasks, suggesting that the guides serve as a resource throughout the entire migration process.

A Dataset of Software Bill of Materials for Evaluating SBOM Consumption Tools

A Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) is becoming an essential tool for effective software dependency management. An SBOM is a list of components used in software, including details such as component names, versions, and licenses. Using SBOMs, developers can quickly identify software components and assess whether their software depends on vulnerable libraries. Numerous tools support software dependency management through SBOMs, which can be broadly categorized into two types: tools that generate SBOMs and tools that utilize SBOMs. A substantial collection of accurate SBOMs is required to evaluate tools that utilize SBOMs. However, there is no publicly available dataset specifically designed for this purpose, and research on SBOM consumption tools remains limited. In this paper, we present a dataset of SBOMs to address this gap. The dataset we constructed comprises 46 SBOMs generated from real-world Java projects, with plans to expand it to include a broader range of projects across various programming languages. Accurate and well-structured SBOMs enable researchers to evaluate the functionality of SBOM consumption tools and identify potential issues. We collected 3,271 Java projects from GitHub and generated SBOMs for 798 of them using Maven with an open-source SBOM generation tool. These SBOMs were refined through both automatic and manual corrections to ensure accuracy, currently resulting in 46 SBOMs that comply with the SPDX Lite profile, which defines minimal requirements tailored to practical workflows in industries. SBOM Challenges for Developers: From Analysis of Stack Overflow Questions

Current software development takes advantage of many external libraries, but it entails security and copyright risks. While the use of the Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) has been encouraged to cope with this problem, its adoption is still insufficient. In this research, we analyzed the challenges that developers faced in practicing SBOM use by examining questions about SBOM utilization on Stack Overflow, a Q&A site for developers. As a result, we found that (1) the proportion of resolved questions about SBOM use is 15.0% which is extremely low, (2) the number of new questions has increased steadily from 2020 to 2023, and (3) SBOM users have three major challenges on SBOM tools.
