Experimentally constrained modeling of the Pockels response of KNbO3 and KTaNbO3

The soft-mode of electro-optic (EO) metal-oxide perovskites plays a critical role in determining their Pockels responses. This is the case of potassium tantalate niobate (KTN), which exhibits an intrinsic Pockels response 2.5 times larger than that of state-of-the-art barium titanate (BTO), highlighting its potential for high-performance EO applications. By combining ab initio calculations at the density-functional theory level and far-IR measurements, we reveal that the harmonic approximation combined with semi-local exchange-correlation functionals fails to accurately capture the soft transverse optical (TO) Slater mode of both potassium niobate and KTN, which dominates the technologically relevant r51 Pockels coefficient. Replacing the calculated mode frequency with its measured value provides an experimentally constrained approach that substantially improves the predicted Pockels response. For that purpose, the previously unreported TO Slater-mode frequency of KTN is extracted from far-IR reflectivity measurements. The results emphasize the potential of KTN-based EO modulators as an alternative to standard lithium niobate and BTO technologies, with a potentially lower energy consumption and device footprint.

Giant photostriction in lead-free ferroelectric stemming from photo-excited thermalized carriers

Ferroelectrics are polar materials whose polarization can be switched by applying electric fields; they offer unique opportunities to develop performant photostrictive materials, i.e., materials that can deform under visible light illumination. Naturally devoid of inversion symmetry, they exhibit original photogalvanic effects such as the Bulk Photovoltaic Effect, which relies on ``hot'' photoexcited carriers. It has long been thought that the electric field generated by this effect may couple to the natural piezoelectric abilities of ferroelectrics to provide large photoinduced deformations. However, due to competing effects, such as thermal dilatation, deformation potential, polarization, or depolarizing-field screening by \textit{thermalized} carriers, it remains unclear which microscopic phenomena govern the photoinduced deformations in classical ferroelectric materials. Here, we demonstrate the largest photoinduced deformation measured in a ferroelectric thin film. Reaching 1 %, this giant photostriction likely originates from the contribution of thermalized photoinduced carriers.

Room temperature surface piezoelectricity in SrTiO3 ceramics via piezoresponse force microscopy

SrTiO3 ceramics are investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy. Piezoelectric contrast is observed on polished surfaces in both vertical and lateral regimes and depends on the grain orientation varying in both sign (polarization direction) and amplitude. The observed contrast is attested to the surface piezoelectricity due to flexoelectric effect (strain gradient-induced polarization) caused by the surface relaxation. The estimated flexoelectric coefficient is approximately one order of magnitude smaller as compared to those recently measured in SrTiO3 single crystals. The observed enhancement of piezoresponse signal at the grain boundaries is explained by the dipole moments associated with inhomogeneous distribution of oxygen vacancies.
