Multiple operator integrals, pseudodifferential calculus, and asymptotic expansions

We push the definition of multiple operator integrals (MOIs) into the realm of unbounded operators, using the pseudodifferential calculus from the works of Connes and Moscovici, Higson, and Guillemin. This in particular provides a natural language for operator integrals in noncommutative geometry. For this purpose, we develop a functional calculus for these pseudodifferential operators. To illustrate the power of this framework, we provide a pertubative expansion of the spectral action for regular $s$-summable spectral triples $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{H}, D)$, and an asymptotic expansion of $\mathrm{Tr}(P e^{-t(D+V)^2})$ as $t \downarrow 0$, where $P$ and $V$ belong to the algebra generated by $\mathcal{A}$ and $D$, and $V$ is bounded and self-adjoint.

Power counting in the spectral action matrix model

We derive power counting formulas for ribbon graph amplitudes that were recently independently discovered in two contexts, namely as a generalization of the Kontsevich model, and as corresponding to a matrix model approach to the spectral action. The Feynman rules are based on divided difference functions of eigenvalues of an abstract Dirac operator. We obtain formulas for the order of divergence, depending on the spectral dimension $d$, the order of decay of the test function $f$ of the spectral action, and the graph properties. Several consequences are discussed, such as the fact that all graphs with maximal order of divergence (at a given loop order and number of external vertices) are planar. To derive our main results we establish two-sided bounds for divided differences, and in particular generalize Hunter's positivity theorem to a larger class of functions.

Differentiation, Taylor series, and all order spectral shift functions, for relatively bounded perturbations

Given $H$ self-adjoint, $V$ symmetric and relatively $H$-bounded, and $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{C}$ satisfying mild conditions, we show that the Gateaux derivative $$\frac{d^n}{dt^n}f(H+tV)|_{t=0}$$ exists in the operator norm topology, for every natural $n$, give a new explicit formula for this derivative in terms of multiple operator integrals, and establish useful perturbation formulas for multiple operator integrals under relatively bounded perturbations. Moreover, if the $H$-bound of $V$ is less than 1, we obtain sufficient conditions on $f$ which ensure that the Taylor expansion $$f(H+V)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{1}{n!}\frac{d^n}{dt^n} f(H+tV)\big|_{t=0}$$ exists and converges absolutely in operator norm. Finally, assuming that $V(H-i)^{-p}\in\mathcal{S}^{s/p}$ for $p=1,\ldots,s$ for some $s\in\mathbb{N}$ (for instance, when $H$ is an order 1 differential operator on an $s-1$ dimensional space), we show that the Krein--Koplienko spectral shift functions $η_{k,H,V}$, satisfying $${Tr}\left(f(H+V)-\sum_{m=0}^{k-1}\frac{1}{m!}\frac{d^m}{dt^m} f(H+tV)\big|_{t=0}\right)=\int_{\mathbb{R}} f^{(k)}(x)η_{k,H,V}(x)dx,$$ exist for every $k=1,2,3,\ldots$, independently of $s$. The latter result (which is significantly stronger than \cite{vNS22}) is completely new also in the case that $V$ is bounded. The proof is based on \cite{PSS}, combined with a generalisation of the multiple operator integral compatible with \cite{HMvN}. We discuss applications of our results to quantum physics and noncommutative geometry.

Quantization and the Resolvent Algebra

We introduce a novel commutative C*-algebra $C_\mathcal{R}(X)$ of functions on a symplectic vector space $(X,σ)$ admitting a complex structure, along with a strict deformation quantization that maps a dense subalgebra of $C_\mathcal{R}(X)$ to the resolvent algebra introduced by Buchholz and Grundling [JFA, 2008]. The associated quantization map is a field-theoretical Weyl quantization compatible with the work of Binz, Honegger and Rieckers [AHPO, 2004]. We also define a Berezin-type quantization map on all of $C_\mathcal{R}(X)$, which continuously and injectively maps it onto a dense subset of the resolvent algebra. The commutative resolvent algebra $C_\mathcal{R}(X)$, generally defined on a real inner product space $X$, intimately depends on the finite dimensional subspaces of $X$. We thoroughly analyze the structure of this algebra in the finite dimensional case by giving a characterization of its elements and by computing its Gelfand spectrum.

Noncompact uniform universal approximation

The universal approximation theorem is generalised to uniform convergence on the (noncompact) input space $\mathbb{R}^n$. All continuous functions that vanish at infinity can be uniformly approximated by neural networks with one hidden layer, for all activation functions $φ$ that are continuous, nonpolynomial, and asymptotically polynomial at $\pm\infty$. When $φ$ is moreover bounded, we exactly determine which functions can be uniformly approximated by neural networks, with the following unexpected results. Let $\overline{\mathcal{N}_φ^l(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ denote the vector space of functions that are uniformly approximable by neural networks with $l$ hidden layers and $n$ inputs. For all $n$ and all $l\geq2$, $\overline{\mathcal{N}_φ^l(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ turns out to be an algebra under the pointwise product. If the left limit of $φ$ differs from its right limit (for instance, when $φ$ is sigmoidal) the algebra $\overline{\mathcal{N}_φ^l(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ ($l\geq2$) is independent of $φ$ and $l$, and equals the closed span of products of sigmoids composed with one-dimensional projections. If the left limit of $φ$ equals its right limit, $\overline{\mathcal{N}_φ^l(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ ($l\geq1$) equals the (real part of the) commutative resolvent algebra, a C*-algebra which is used in mathematical approaches to quantum theory. In the latter case, the algebra is independent of $l\geq1$, whereas in the former case $\overline{\mathcal{N}_φ^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ is strictly bigger than $\overline{\mathcal{N}_φ^1(\mathbb{R}^n)}$.

The basic resolvents of position and momentum operators form a total set in the resolvent algebra

Let Q and P be the position and momentum operators of a particle in one dimension. It is shown that all compact operators can be approximated in norm by linear combinations of the basic resolvents (aQ + bP - i r)^{-1} for real constants a,b,r=/=0. This implies that the basic resolvents form a total set (norm dense span) in the C*-algebra R generated by the resolvents, termed resolvent algebra. So the basic resolvents share this property with the unitary Weyl operators, which span the Weyl algebra. These results obtain for finite systems of particles in any number of dimensions. The resolvent algebra of infinite systems (quantum fields), being the inductive limit of its finitely generated subalgebras, is likewise spanned by its basic resolvents.

Local invariants of conformally deformed non-commutative tori II: multiple operator integrals

We explicitly compute the local invariants (heat kernel coefficients) of a conformally deformed non-commutative $d$-torus using multiple operator integrals. We derive a recursive formula that easily produces an explicit expression for the local invariants of any order $k$ and in any dimension $d$. Our recursive formula can conveniently produce all formulas related to the modular operator, which before were obtained in incremental steps for $d\in\{2,4\}$ and $k\in\{0,2,4\}$. We exemplify this by writing down some known ($k=2$, $d=2$) and some novel ($k=2$, $d\geq 3$) formulas in the modular operator.

C*-algebraic results in the search for quantum gauge fields

This thesis consists of two parts, both situated in operator theory, and both motivated by the quest for rigorous quantizations of gauge theories. The first part is based on [Skripka,vN - JST 2022], [van Suijlekom,vN - JNCG 2021], and [van Suijlekom,vN - JHEP 2022], and concerns the spectral action of noncommutative geometry and its perturbative expansions. We prove the existence of a higher-order spectral shift function under the relative Schatten class assumption, give a converging series expansion of the spectral action in terms of Chern--Simons and Yang--Mills forms, and show one-loop renormalizability of the spectral action in a generalized sense. The second part is based on [Stienstra,vN 2020] and [vN - LMP 2022] and concerns a non-perturbative approach to quantum gauge theory by means of Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory and strict quantization. We construct C*-algebras of U(1)^n-gauge observables on the lattice, show that they are conserved under the relevant time evolutions, construct continuum limit C*-algebras, and show that the result constitutes a strict deformation quantization.

Higher-order spectral shift function for resolvent comparable perturbations

Given a pair of self-adjoint operators $H$ and $V$ such that $V$ is bounded and $(H+V-i)^{-1}-(H-i)^{-1}$ belongs to the Schatten-von Neumann ideal $\mathcal{S}^n$, $n\ge 2$, of operators on a separable Hilbert space, we establish higher order trace formulas for a broad set of functions $f$ containing several major classes of test functions and also establish existence of the respective locally integrable real-valued spectral shift functions determined uniquely up to a low degree polynomial summand. Our result generalizes the result of \cite{PSS13} for Schatten-von Neumman perturbations $V$ and settles earlier attempts to encompass general perturbations with Schatten-von Neumman difference of resolvents, which led to more complicated trace formulas for more restrictive sets of functions $f$ and to analogs of spectral shift functions lacking real-valuedness and/or expected degree of uniqueness. Our proof builds on a general change of variables method derived in this paper and significantly refining those appearing in \cite{vNS21,PSS15,S17} with respect to several parameters at once.

Cyclic cocycles and one-loop corrections in the spectral action

We present an intelligible review of recent results concerning cyclic cocycles in the spectral action and one-loop quantization. We show that the spectral action, when perturbed by a gauge potential, can be written as a series of Chern-Simons actions and Yang-Mills actions of all orders. In the odd orders, generalized Chern-Simons forms are integrated against an odd $(b,B)$-cocycle, whereas, in the even orders, powers of the curvature are integrated against $(b,B)$-cocycles that are Hochschild cocycles as well. In both cases, the Hochschild cochains are derived from the Taylor series expansion of the spectral action Tr$(f(D+V))$ in powers of $V=π_D(A)$, but unlike the Taylor expansion we expand in increasing order of the forms in $A$. We then analyze the perturbative quantization of the spectral action in noncommutative geometry and establish its one-loop renormalizability as a gauge theory. We show that the one-loop counterterms are of the same Chern-Simons-Yang-Mills form so that they can be safely subtracted from the spectral action. A crucial role will be played by the appropriate Ward identities, allowing for a fully spectral formulation of the quantum theory at one loop.

Cyclic cocycles in the spectral action

We show that the spectral action, when perturbed by a gauge potential, can be written as a series of Chern--Simons actions and Yang--Mills actions of all orders. In the odd orders, generalized Chern--Simons forms are integrated against an odd $(b,B)$-cocycle, whereas, in the even orders, powers of the curvature are integrated against $(b,B)$-cocycles that are Hochschild cocycles as well. In both cases, the Hochschild cochains are derived from the Taylor series expansion of the spectral action Tr$(f(D+V))$ in powers of $V=π_D(A)$, but unlike the Taylor expansion we expand in increasing order of the forms in $A$. This extends [Connes--Chamseddine 2006], which computes only the scale-invariant part of the spectral action, works in dimension at most 4, and assumes the vanishing tadpole hypothesis. In our situation, we obtain a truly infinite odd $(b,B)$-cocycle. The analysis involved draws from recent results in multiple operator integration, which also allows us to give conditions under which this cocycle is entire, and under which our expansion is absolutely convergent. As a consequence of our expansion and of the gauge invariance of the spectral action, we show that the odd $(b,B)$-cocycle pairs trivially with $K_1$.

Spectral shift for relative Schatten class perturbations

We affirmatively settle the question on existence of a real-valued higher order spectral shift function for a pair of self-adjoint operators $H$ and $V$ such that $V$ is bounded and $V(H-iI)^{-1}$ belongs to a Schatten-von Neumann ideal $\mathcal{S}^n$ of compact operators in a separable Hilbert space. We also show that the function satisfies the same trace formula as in the known case of $V\in\mathcal{S}^n$ and that it is unique up to a polynomial summand of order $n-1$. Our result significantly advances earlier partial results where counterparts of the spectral shift function for noncompact perturbations lacked real-valuedness and aforementioned uniqueness as well as appeared in more complicated trace formulas for much more restrictive sets of functions. Our result applies to models arising in noncommutative geometry and mathematical physics.

One-loop corrections to the spectral action

We analyze the perturbative quantization of the spectral action in noncommutative geometry and establish its one-loop renormalizability in a generalized sense, while staying within the spectral framework of noncommutative geometry. Our result is based on the perturbative expansion of the spectral action in terms of higher Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons forms. In the spirit of random noncommutative geometries, we consider the path integral over matrix fluctuations around a fixed noncommutative gauge background and show that the corresponding one-loop counterterms are of the same form so that they can be safely subtracted from the spectral action. A crucial role will be played by the appropriate Ward identities, allowing for a fully spectral formulation of the quantum theory at one loop.
