MacMahon's sums-of-divisors and allied $q$-series

Here we investigate the $q$-series \begin{align*} \mathcal{U}_a(q)&=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} MO(a;n)q^n&:=\sum_{0< k_1<k_2<\cdots<k_a} \frac{q^{k_1+k_2+\cdots+k_a}}{(1-q^{k_1})^2(1-q^{k_2})^2\cdots(1-q^{k_a})^2},\\ \mathcal{U}_a^{\star}(q)&=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}M(a;n)q^n&:=\sum_{1\leq k_1\leq k_2\leq\cdots\leq k_a} \frac{q^{k_1+k_2+\cdots+k_a}}{(1-q^{k_1})^2(1-q^{k_2})^2\cdots(1-q^{k_a})^2}. \end{align*} MacMahon introduced the $\mathcal{U}_a(q)$ in his seminal work on partitions and divisor functions. Recent works show that these series are sums of quasimodular forms with weights $\leq 2a.$ We make this explicit by describing them in terms of Eisenstein series. We use these formulas to obtain explicit and general congruences for the coefficients $MO(a;n)$ and $M(a;n).$ Notably, we prove the conjecture of Amdeberhan-Andrews-Tauraso as the $m=0$ special case of the infinite family of congruences $$ MO(11m+10; 11n+7)\equiv 0\pmod{11}, $$ and we prove that $$ MO(17m+16; 17n+15)\equiv 0\pmod{17}. $$ We obtain further formulae using the limiting behavior of these series. For $n\leq a+\binom{a+1}2,$ we obtain a ``hook length'' formulae for $MO(a;n)$, and for $n\leq 2a$, we find that $M(a;n)=\binom{a+n-1}{n-a}+\binom{a+n-2}{n-a-1}.$

Yay for Determinants!

In this {\it case study}, we hope to show why Sheldon Axler was not just wrong, but {\em wrong}, when he urged, in 1995: ``Down with Determinants!''. We first recall how determinants are useful in enumerative combinatorics, and then illustrate three versatile tools (Dodgson's condensation, the holonomic ansatz and constant term evaluations) to operate in tandem to prove a certain intriguing determinantal formula conjectured by the first author. We conclude with a postscript describing yet another, much more efficient, method for evaluating determinants: `ask determinant-guru, Christian Krattenthaler', but advise people only to use it as a last resort, since if we would have used this last method right away, we would not have had the fun of doing it all by ourselves.

Collisionless shock region of the KdV equation and an entry in Gradshteyn and Ryzhik

The long-time behavior of solutions to the initial value problem for the Korteweg-de Vries equation on the whole line, with general initial conditions has been described uniformly using five different asymptotic forms. Four of these asymptotic forms were expected: the quiescent behavior (for |x| very large), a soliton region (in which the solution behaves as a collection of isolated solitary waves), a self-similar region (in which the solution is described via a Painlevé transcendent), and a similarity region (where the solution behaves as a simple trigonometric function of the quantities t and x/t). A fifth asymptotic form, lying between the self-similar (Painlevé) and the similarity one, has been described in terms of classical elliptic functions. An integral of elliptic type, giving an explicit representation of the phase, has appeared in this context. The same integral has appeared in the table of integrals by Gradshteyn and Ryzhik. Our goal here is to confirm the validity of this entry.

Extensions of MacMahon's sums of divisors

In 1920, P. A. MacMahon generalized the (classical) notion of divisor sums by relating it to the theory of partitions of integers. In this paper, we extend the idea of MacMahon. In doing so we reveal a wealth of divisibility theorems and unexpected combinatorial identities. Our initial approach is quite different from MacMahon and involves rational function approximation to MacMahon-type generating functions. One such example involves multiple $q$-harmonic sums $$\sum_{k=1}^n\frac{(-1)^{k-1}\genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{n}{k}_{q}(1+q^k)q^{\binom{k}{2}+tk}}{[k]_q^{2t} \genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{n+k}{k}_{q}}=\sum_{1\leq k_1\leq\cdots\leq k_{2t}\leq n}\frac{q^{n+k_1+k_3\cdots+k_{2t-1}}+q^{k_2+k_4+\cdots+k_{2t}}}{[n+k_1]_q[k_2]_q\cdots[k_{2t}]_q}.$$

The MacMahon $q$-Catalan is convex

Let $n\geq2$ be an integer. In this paper, we study the convexity of the so-called MacMahon's $q$-Catalan polynomials $C_n(q)=\frac1{[n+1]_q}\left[ 2n \atop n \right]_q$ as functions of $q$. Along the way, several intermediate results on inequalities are presented including a commentary on the convexity of the generation function for the integer partitions.

Theorems, Problems and Conjectures

These notes are designed to offer some (perhaps new) codicils to related work, a list of problems and conjectures seeking (preferably) combinatorial proofs. The main items are Eulerian polynomials and hook/contents of Young diagram, mostly on the latter. We also have items on Frobenius theorem and multi-core partitions; most recently, some problems on (what we call) colored over-partitions. Formulas analogues to or in the spirit of works by Han, Nekrasov-Okounkov and Stanley are distributed throughout. Concluding remarks are provided at the end in hopes of directing the interested researcher, properly. The newly added problem is on chromatic polynomials

Hook length and symplectic content in partitions

The dimension of an irreducible representation of $GL(n,\mathbb{C})$, $Sp(2n)$, or $SO(n)$ is given by the respective hook-length and content formulas for the corresponding partition. The first author, inspired by the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula, conjectured combinatorial interpretations of analogous expressions involving hook-lengths and symplectic/orthogonal contents. We prove special cases of these conjectures. In the process, we show that partitions of $n$ with all symplectic contents non-zero are equinumerous with partitions of $n$ into distinct even parts. We also present Beck-type companions to this identity. In this context, we give the parity of the number of partitions into distinct parts with odd (respectively, even) rank. We study the connection between the sum of hook-lengths and the sum of inversions in the binary representation of a partition. In addition, we introduce a new partition statistic, the $x$-ray list of a partition, and explore its connection with distinct partitions as well as partitions maximally contained in a given staircase partition.

Refinements of Beck-type partition identities

Franklin's identity generalizes Euler's identity and states that the number of partitions of $n$ with $j$ different parts divisible by $r$ equals the number of partitions of $n$ with $j$ repeated parts. In this article, we give a refinement of Franklin's identity when $j=1$. We prove Franklin's identity when $j=1$, $r=2$ for partitions with fixed perimeter, i.e., fixed largest hook. We also derive a Beck-type identity for partitions with fixed perimeter: the excess in the number of parts in all partitions into odd parts with perimeter $M$ over the number of parts in all partitions into distinct parts with perimeter $M$ equals the number of partitions with perimeter $M$ whose set of even parts is a singleton. We provide analytic and combinatorial proofs of our results.

A Combinatorial Approach for Nonparametric Short-Term Estimation of Queue Lengths using Probe Vehicles

Traffic state estimation plays an important role in facilitating effective traffic management. This study develops a combinatorial approach for nonparametric short-term queue length estimation in terms of cycle-by-cycle partially observed queues from probe vehicles. The method does not assume random arrivals and does not assume any primary parameters or estimation of any parameters but uses simple algebraic expressions that only depend on signal timing. For an approach lane at a traffic intersection, the conditional queue lengths given probe vehicle location, count, time, and analysis interval (e.g., at the end of red signal phase) are represented by a Negative Hypergeometric distribution. The estimators obtained are compared with parametric methods and simple highway capacity manual methods using field test data involving probe vehicles. The analysis indicates that the nonparametric methods presented in this paper match the accuracy of parametric methods used in the field test data for estimating queue lengths.

Filter integrals for orthogonal polynomials

Motivated by an expression by Persson and Strang on an integral involving Legendre polynomials, stating that the square of $P_{2n+1}(x)/x$ integrated over $[-1,1]$ is always $2$, we present analog results for Hermite, Chebyshev, Laguerre and Gegenbauer polynomials as well as the original Legendre polynomial with even index.

Arithmetic properties of the sum of divisors

The divisor function $σ(n)$ denotes the sum of the divisors of the positive integer $n$. For a prime $p$ and $m \in \mathbb{N}$, the $p$-adic valuation of $m$ is the highest power of $p$ which divides $m$. Formulas for $ν_{p}(σ(n))$ are established. For $p=2$, these involve only the odd primes dividing $n$. These expressions are used to establish the bound $ν_{2}(σ(n)) \leq \lceil\log_{2}(n) \rceil$, with equality if and only if $n$ is the product of distinct Mersenne primes, and for an odd prime $p$, the bound is $ν_{p}(σ(n)) \leq \lceil \log_{p}(n) \rceil$, with equality related to solutions of the Ljunggren-Nagell diophantine equation.

A triple integral analog of a multiple zeta value

We establish the triple integral evaluation \[ \int_{1}^{\infty} \int_{0}^{1} \int_{0}^{1} \frac{dz \, dy \, dx}{x(x+y)(x+y+z)} = \frac{5}{24} ζ(3), \] as well as the equivalent polylogarithmic double sum \[ \sum_{k=1}^{\infty} \sum_{j=k}^{\infty} \frac{(-1)^{k-1}}{k^{2}} \, \frac{1}{j \, 2^{j}} = \frac{13}{24} ζ(3). \] This double sum is related to, but less approachable than, similar sums studied by Ramanujan. It is also reminiscent of Euler's formula $ζ(2,1) = ζ(3)$, which is the simplest instance of duality of multiple polylogarithms. We review this duality and apply it to derive a companion identity. We also discuss approaches based on computer algebra. All of our approaches ultimately require the introduction of polylogarithms and nontrivial relations between them. It remains an open challenge to relate the triple integral or the double sum to $ζ(3)$ directly.

Our main results offer generalizations of these identities and demonstrate automated proofs with additional twists, and on occasion we furnish a combinatorial proof.

Two Triple binomial sum supercongruences

In a recent article, Apagodu and Zeilberger (http://arxiv.org/abs/1606.03351)discuss some applications of an algorithm for finding and proving congruence identities (modulo primes) of indefinite sums of many combinatorial sequence. At the end, they propose some supercongruences as conjectures. Here we prove one of them, including a new companion enumerating abelian squares, and we leave some remarks for the others.

Wilf's "Snake Oil" Method Proves an Identity in The Motzkin Triangle

We give yet-another illustration of using Herb Wilf's Snake Oil Method, by proving a certain identity between the entries of the so-called Motzkin Triangle, that arose in a recent study of enumeration of certain classes of integer partitions. We also briefly illustrate how this method can be applied to general `triangles'.
