Electronic properties of the three-band Hubbard model

We study the electronic band-structure and transport properties of a CuO2-plane within the three-band Hubbard model. The Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) is used to solve the many particle problem. The calculations show that the optical gap Delta_opt is given by excitations from the lower Hubbard band into the so called Zhang-Rice singlet band. The optical gap Delta_opt turns out to be considerably smaller than the charge transfer energy Delta (Delta=ep-ed) for a typical set of parameters, which is in agreement with experiment. For the two-dimensional CuO2-plane we investigated the dependency of the shape of the Fermi surface on the different hopping parameters t_CuO and t_OO. A value t_OO/t_CuO >0$ leads to a Fermi surface surrounding the M point. An additional different static shift of the oxygen energies is also considered to calculate the electronic response due to a displacement of the oxygen atoms given by a frozen phonon. The density-density correlation for the oxygen orbitals is linear in doping for both hole and electron doping but shows a different temperature dependency in the two regimes. In the first case it is temperature independent and increases upon doping, which leads to an increasing electron-phonon coupling for the B_1g-mode in high-Tc superconductors.

Magnetic properties of the three-band Hubbard model

We present magnetic properties of the three-band Hubbard model in the para- and antiferromagnetic phase on a hypercubic lattice calculated with the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT). To allow for solutions with broken spin-symmetry we extended the approach to lattices with AB-like structure. Above a critical sublattice magnetization m_d=0.5 one can observe rich structures in the spectral-functions similar to the t-J model which can be related to the well known bound states for one hole in the Neel-background. In addition to the one-particle properties we discuss the static spin-susceptiblity in the paramagnetic state at the points q=0 and q=(pi,pi,pi,...) for different dopings delta. The delta-T-phase-diagram exhibits an enhanced stability of the antiferromagnetic state for electron-doped systems in comparison to hole-doped. This asymmetry in the phase diagram is in qualitative agreement with experiments for high-T_c materials.

Numerical Renormalization Group Calculations for the Self-energy of the impurity Anderson model

We present a new method to calculate directly the one-particle self-energy of an impurity Anderson model with Wilson's numerical Renormalization Group method by writing this quantity as the ratio of two correlation functions. This way of calculating Sigma(z) turns out to be considerably more reliable and accurate than via the impurity Green's function alone. We show results for the self-energy for the case of a constant coupling between impurity and conduction band (ImDelta = const) and the effective Delta(z) arising in the Dynamical Mean Field Theory of the Hubbard model. Implications to the problem of the metal-insulator transition in the Hubbard model are also discussed.

Anderson impurity in pseudo-gap Fermi systems

We use the numerical renormalization group method to study an Anderson impurity in a conduction band with the density of states varying as rho(omega) \propto |omega|^r with r>0. We find two different fixed points: a local-moment fixed point with the impurity effectively decoupled from the band and a strong-coupling fixed point with a partially screened impurity spin. The specific heat and the spin-susceptibility show powerlaw behaviour with different exponents in strong-coupling and local-moment regime. We also calculate the impurity spectral function which diverges (vanishes) with |omega|^{-r} (|ω|^r) in the strong-coupling (local moment) regime.

Dynamical Magnetic Susceptibility for the $t$-$J$ Model

We present results for the {\em dynamical}\/ magnetic susceptibility of the $t$-$J$ model, calculated with the dynamical mean field theory. For $J=0$ we find enhanced ferromagnetic correlations but an otherwise relatively $\vec{q}$-independent dynamical magnetic susceptibility. For $J>0$ the explicit antiferromagnetic exchange leads to a dynamic spin structure factor with the expected peak at the antiferromagnetic Bragg point.

Spectral Properties and Bandstructure of Correlated Electron Systems

We present $\vec{k}$-dependent one-particle spectra and corresponding effective bandstructures for the $2d$ Hubbard model calculated within the dynamical molecular field theory (DMFT). This method has proven to yield highly nontrivial results for a variety of quantities but the question remains open to what extent it is applicable to relevant physical situations. To address this problem we compare our results for spectral functions to those obtained by QMC simulations. The good agreement supports our notion that the DMFT is indeed a sensible ansatz for correlated models even in to $d=2$.

Anomalous Normal-State Properties of High-T$_c$ Superconductors -- Intrinsic Properties of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems?

A systematic study of optical and transport properties of the Hubbard model, based on Metzner and Vollhardt's dynamical mean-field approximation, is reviewed. This model shows interesting anomalous properties that are, in our opinion, ubiquitous to single-band strongly correlated systems (for all spatial dimensions greater than one), and also compare qualitatively with many anomalous transport features of the high-T$_c$ cuprates. This anomalous behavior of the normal-state properties is traced to a ``collective single-band Kondo effect,'' in which a quasiparticle resonance forms at the Fermi level as the temperature is lowered, ultimately yielding a strongly renormalized Fermi liquid at zero temperature.

The Hubbard Model at Infinite Dimensions: Thermodynamic and Transport Properties

We present results on thermodynamic quantities, resistivity and optical conductivity for the Hubbard model on a simple hypercubic lattice in infinite dimensions. Our results for the paramagnetic phase display the features expected from an intuitive analysis of the one-particle spectra and substantiate the similarity of the physics of the Hubbard model to those of heavy fermion systems. The calculations were performed using an approximate solution to the single-impurity Anderson model, which is the key quantity entering the solution of the Hubbard model in this limit. To establish the quality of this approximation we compare its results, together with those obtained from two other widely used methods, to essentially exact quantum Monte Carlo results.

Transport Properties of the Infinite Dimensional Hubbard Model

Results for the optical conductivity and resistivity of the Hubbard model in infinite spatial dimensions are presented. At half filling we observe a gradual crossover from a normal Fermi-liquid with a Drude peak at $ω=0$ in the optical conductivity to an insulator as a function of $U$ for temperatures above the antiferromagnetic phase transition. When doped, the ``insulator'' becomes a Fermi-liquid with a corresponding temperature dependence of the optical conductivity and resistivity. We find a $T^2$-coefficient in the low temperature resistivity which suggests that the carriers in the system acquire a considerable mass-enhancement due to the strong local correlations. At high temperatures, a crossover into a semi-metallic regime takes place.
