Coefficient Quantization in Banach Spaces

Let (e_i) be a dictionary for a separable Banach space X. We consider the problem of approximation by linear combinations of dictionary elements with quantized coefficients drawn usually from a `finite alphabet'. We investigate several approximation properties of this type and connect them to the Banach space geometry of X. The existence of a total minimal system with one of these properties, namely the coefficient quantization property, is shown to be equivalent to X containing c_0.

On the structure of asymptotic l_p spaces

We prove that if X is a separable, reflexive space which is asymptotic l_p, then X embeds into a reflexive space Z having an asymptotic l_p finite-dimensional decomposition. This result leads to an intrinsic characterization of subspaces of spaces with an asymptotic l_p FDD. More general results of this type are also obtained.

Partial Unconditionality

J. Elton proved that every normalized weakly null sequence in a Banach space admits a subsequence that is nearly unconditional which is a weak form of unconditionality. The notion of near-unconditionality is quantified by a constant $K(δ)$ depending on a parameter $δ\in (0,1]$. It is unknown if $\sup_{δ>0} K(δ) < \infty$. This problem turns out to be closely related to the question whether every infinite-dimensional Banach space contains a quasi-greedy basic sequence. The notion of a quasi-greedy basic sequence was introduced recently by S. V. Konyagin and V. N. Temlyakov. We present an extension of Elton's result which includes Schreier unconditionality. The proof involves a basic framework which we show can be also employed to prove other partial unconditionality results including that of convex unconditionality due to Argyros, Mercourakis and Tsarpalias. Various constants of partial unconditionality are defined and we investigate the relationships between them. We also explore the combinatorial problem underlying the $\sup_{δ>0} K(δ) < \infty$ problem and show that $\sup_{δ>0} K(δ) > 5/4$.

On norm closed ideals in L(\ell_p\oplus\ell_q)

It is well known that the only proper non-trivial norm-closed ideal in the algebra L(X) for X=\ell_p (1 \le p < \infty) or X=c_0 is the ideal of compact operators. The next natural question is to describe all closed ideals of L(\ell_p\oplus\ell_q) for 1 \le p,q < \infty, p \neq q, or, equivalently, the closed ideals in L(\ell_p,\ell_q) for p < q. This paper shows that for 1 < p < 2 < q < \infty there are at least four distinct proper closed ideals in L(\ell_p,\ell_q), including one that has not been studied before. The proofs use various methods from Banach space theory.

On the structure of the spreading models of a Banach space

We study some questions concerning the structure of the set of spreading models of a separable infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$. In particular we give an example of a reflexive $X$ so that all spreading models of $X$ contain $\ell_1$ but none of them is isomorphic to $\ell_1$. We also prove that for any countable set $C$ of spreading models generated by weakly null sequences there is a spreading model generated by a weakly null sequence which dominates each element of $C$. In certain cases this ensures that $X$ admits, for each $α< ω_1$, a spreading model $(\tilde x_i^α)_i$ such that if $α< β$ then $(\tilde x_i^α)_i$ is dominated by (and not equivalent to) $(\tilde x_i^β)_i$. Some applications of these ideas are used to give sufficient conditions on a Banach space for the existence of a subspace and an operator defined on the subspace, which is not a compact perturbation of a multiple of the inclusion map.

How many operators do there exist on a Banach space?

We present partial results to the following question: Does every infinite dimensional Banach space have an infinite dimensional subspace on which one can define an operator which is not a compact perturbation of a scalar multiplication?
