Gated Multimodal Units for Information Fusion

This paper presents a novel model for multimodal learning based on gated neural networks. The Gated Multimodal Unit (GMU) model is intended to be used as an internal unit in a neural network architecture whose purpose is to find an intermediate representation based on a combination of data from different modalities. The GMU learns to decide how modalities influence the activation of the unit using multiplicative gates. It was evaluated on a multilabel scenario for genre classification of movies using the plot and the poster. The GMU improved the macro f-score performance of single-modality approaches and outperformed other fusion strategies, including mixture of experts models. Along with this work, the MM-IMDb dataset is released which, to the best of our knowledge, is the largest publicly available multimodal dataset for genre prediction on movies.

Evaluation of YTEX and MetaMap for clinical concept recognition

We used MetaMap and YTEX as a basis for the construc- tion of two separate systems to participate in the 2013 ShARe/CLEF eHealth Task 1[9], the recognition of clinical concepts. No modifications were directly made to these systems, but output concepts were filtered using stop concepts, stop concept text and UMLS semantic type. Con- cept boundaries were also adjusted using a small collection of rules to increase precision on the strict task. Overall MetaMap had better per- formance than YTEX on the strict task, primarily due to a 20% perfor- mance improvement in precision. In the relaxed task YTEX had better performance in both precision and recall giving it an overall F-Score 4.6% higher than MetaMap on the test data. Our results also indicated a 1.3% higher accuracy for YTEX in UMLS CUI mapping.

Sockpuppet Detection in Wikipedia: A Corpus of Real-World Deceptive Writing for Linking Identities

This paper describes the corpus of sockpuppet cases we gathered from Wikipedia. A sockpuppet is an online user account created with a fake identity for the purpose of covering abusive behavior and/or subverting the editing regulation process. We used a semi-automated method for crawling and curating a dataset of real sockpuppet investigation cases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first corpus available on real-world deceptive writing. We describe the process for crawling the data and some preliminary results that can be used as baseline for benchmarking research. The dataset will be released under a Creative Commons license from our project website: http://docsig.cis.uab.edu.

An Active Instance-based Machine Learning method for Stellar Population Studies

We have developed a method for fast and accurate stellar population parameters determination in order to apply it to high resolution galaxy spectra. The method is based on an optimization technique that combines active learning with an instance-based machine learning algorithm. We tested the method with the retrieval of the star-formation history and dust content in "synthetic" galaxies with a wide range of S/N ratios. The "synthetic" galaxies where constructed using two different grids of high resolution theoretical population synthesis models. The results of our controlled experiment shows that our method can estimate with good speed and accuracy the parameters of the stellar populations that make up the galaxy even for very low S/N input. For a spectrum with S/N=5 the typical average deviation between the input and fitted spectrum is less than 10**{-5}. Additional improvements are achieved using prior knowledge.

Automated Determination of Stellar Population Parameters in Galaxies Using Active Instance-based Learning

In this work we focus on the determination of the relative distributions of young, intermediate-age and old populations of stars in galaxies. Starting from a grid of theoretical population synthesis models we constructed a set of model galaxies with a distribution of ages, metallicities and intrinsic reddening. Using this set we have explored a new fitting method that presents several advantages over conventional methods. We propose an optimization technique that combines active learning with an instance-based machine learning algorithm. Experimental results show that this method can estimate with high speed and accuracy the physical parameters of the stellar populations.
